Dear readers Beverley Cuddy L R E T R A C TA B L E L E A D S MADE IN GERMANY Illustration by Beverley Cuddy ucy Watts MBE was a remarkable young woman who lived her life under the shadow of a life limiting condition She faced the constant challenge to get well enough to escape from hospital When she could Lucy used her energy to advocate for others in a similar position speaking about the unspeakable planning for a life that would inevitably be very short We not long ago reported that her assistance dog Molly had died now sadly the pair are reunited I have a very fond memory of Lucy and Molly We awarded them a medal in 2016 at the London Pet Show where we had a green room for the winners to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the event I vividly remember how Lucy s face lit up when meeting fellow winner Bob the Street Cat We found ourselves alone with him when Bob s owner James popped outside for a smoke It was like being in the presence of royalty Sadly so many of our remarkable winners are no longer with us We ve said goodbye to lovely Haatchi the huge tripawd who was there that day too And the two gorgeous and gentle rescue dogs Sapphire and Cobalt who changed so many people s minds about the Dangerous Dogs Act The courts had ruled them to be Pit Bulls despite DNA proving them to be Staffies They never hurt a soul but had to live their whole lives limited by being muzzled and on a lead That stupid and ineffective law stubbornly remains on the statute books But we should never give up Another of our ancient campaigns surprised everyone by coming to fruition just before we went to press More than 30 years ago this magazine banned anyone from advertising electric shock collars on our pages and not long after we added in the invisible fence The advertisers were furious but it was so obviously the right choice We d not shock our children so why our pets The Kennel Club banned people selling them at Crufts too But in recent years there s been a very vocal faction of dog trainers that appear to love using these scary gadgets and TikTok especially began to normalise aversive methods It was depressing to see the division and the regression to the bad old days of dominance theory SHOCK SHAKE UP The current government hadn t been able to find time to give the Kept Animals Bill the time it needed to become law so no one was expecting any other reforms But just before we went to press we heard that shock collars would be illegal to use in England from February 2024 onwards It was a shock and for a change a welcome one Back in 2018 almost anything seemed possible as we d had the green light to Lucy s Law The shock collar was the next thing and Michael Gove announced they would be banned but there was a last minute push back from those who profited from selling these instruments and the government appeared to lose its nerve The new version is slightly watered down sadly The shock collar can still be sold in England the armed forces bizarrely are still allowed to shock dogs and the invisible fence has been taken out of the mix But from February 2024 anyone found to be putting a shock collar on a dog or cat and holding the remote control can face unlimited bans from local authorities The news has recharged the batteries of the positive training community some of whom are generously offering to retrain the shockers who love e collars P Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears and Honey a Cocker Spaniel 4 Dogs Today May 2023 YEARS Inventor of the Retractable Lead since 1973 www flexi de en The first usable and mass produced retractable lead was invented and designed by Manfred Bogdahn in 1972 One year later he founded the brand flexi and shipped the flexi lead worldwide

Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI O ver 20 years of experience witnessing the consequences of animal abuse had not prepared Niki Roe for the state Jack was in A lady had rescued him from the gutter where he d been thrown out to die in Egypt I watched the video taken right after his rescue and I was shocked Niki recalls There was not a single hair on his body He was emaciated covered in open sores mouth bound shut barely breathing He was at death s door and then there were his legs We believe Jack was kept with his legs tied behind his back in the same way that they do in meat markets Due to the unnatural position the right leg had broken not the only broken bone in his body by the time he was rescued but the worst thing about it was that it had fused backwards He was unable to use his front legs at all Given the terrible condition Jack was in one could not have blamed the shelter he was taken to if they had decided to put him to sleep on humane grounds recovery seemed a remote chance for this dog who was barely breathing and resources could be scarce particularly with the price of dog food going up But this was not going to happen not in Egypt In animal protection groups on Facebook I had seen the immense suffering that the Egyptians cause to animals either intentionally or through lack of understanding but on the ground I also saw kindness and dedication that went so far that it would probably be considered madness in my home country Elisa Kissa berg a Finnish national recently wrote to Dogs Today following her visit to several animal shelters in Cairo While there is no real animal welfare law to protect animals from abuse and dogs are routinely poisoned in the streets by authorities something stands out about the Egyptian people working tirelessly to help street dogs and cats they never put any animal to sleep because they say There is always hope unless it is rabies 6 Dogs Today May 2023 Jack s giant journey Having been involved in animal welfare for years Niki Roe had seen it all or so she thought until a horribly abused dog made his way to her Helping Jack along his journey took love dedication veterinary care and complementary therapies Now Niki is working to help more dogs like him Alternative treatments can help as long as they work alongside traditional treatment They can complement each other very well One of the reasons for the overcrowding of shelters is that the animals never are euthanased Elisa wrote If the animal is in pain it is given pain medication and a natural end is expected Even angry dogs are not euthanased as I m writing this there s a petition in a Facebook group to place a dog that bit a person in a shelter before it had to be killed It is of course difficult for a Finn to understand this mentality It can be difficult to understand from a British perspective too we often consider it a kindness to put a suffering animal out of its misery if it seems recovery is not possible Whatever stance one may have on the matter one thing is likely Egyptian rescuers belief that there is always hope unless it is rabies saved Jack s life And Jack fought hard for that life slowly stepping back from the brink Through rescue connections he arrived in the UK in 2021 just as travel reopened across the world after Covid restrictions and his journey to recovery sped up dramatically Niki says His left front leg was operated on several times with metal plates inserted He was in Buckinghamshire for three weeks getting a lot of surgeries and then starting on hydrotherapy His right leg remains stuck backwards in a sort of reverse superman position but now that he can put his weight on his left paw instead of his chin he can stand a little more upright a bit like the downward dog yoga position Once he d recovered some more Jack joined Niki in Berkshire and Niki says he s not going anywhere I have fostered dogs before and I find that when they truly need you when you nurse them instead of just looking after them it creates a deeper bond and it s harder to break Plus in the back of your mind there is always this thought that no one will look after them as you would So Jack is staying with me and our little pack of yet more disabled dogs as well as a few ablebodied rescues To be honest I don t believe Jack thinks there is anything whatsoever wrong with him He s not overly fond of the doggie wheelchair but he loves going out in his buggy when it s pulled out he gets excited as any dog would when you pull out the lead He can jump in and out of the buggy and often does He seems to have this look in his eyes this fighting energy he is absolutely determined to get on with everything He defied all odds and is living a good life He will forever bear the scars of what was done to him but his mind and spirit are healed It took a long time to get him there and a lot of therapies ALTERNATIVE MENU Determined to give Jack the best fighting chance Niki turned to complementary therapies alongside the usual veterinary care and routine Along with all the treatment he went through at The Ralph vet specialists in Marlow the hydrotherapy and physiotherapy Jack has also had a menu of alternative therapies Niki says I first turned to complementary therapies for my old Rottweiler when she had cancer we wanted to keep her comfortable and the vet suggested we try acupuncture to help with pain relief She was May 2023 Dogs Today 7

supposed to have weeks to months but she lived a year I wouldn t suggest replacing medicine with alternative therapies never that I am an advanced yoga teacher and I believe in healing the mind body and spirit Alternative treatments can help as long as they work alongside traditional treatment They can complement each other very well As well as Reiki acupuncture laser therapy and light therapy Jack received Thought Field Therapy TFT by quite a big name Paul McKenna the famous hypnotist behavioural scientist self help books author and broadcaster While his patients are usually the two legged kind Paul a personal friend of Niki was willing to lend his services to Jack Developed by psychologist Roger Callahan in the 1980s TFT is a type of alternative therapy that aims to treat psychological and emotional problems by tapping on specific points on the body s energy meridian system Jack absolutely melted into my arms immediately as he received this technique from Paul Niki recalls All of his body s muscles just let go and he completely trusted and relaxed into the practice I have known Paul for many years and experienced a brief session myself years ago He mainly works with humans but when he heard of Jack he told me to bring him over to give it a try it was lovely of him Niki also gave Jack sound therapy listening to the vibrations of singing bowls In humans it brings about a deep meditative state and over the 8 Dogs Today May 2023 years Niki has found that the effect on dogs is very similar In sessions with humans and dogs humans lie down and relax completely sometimes they fall asleep Without fail and in a matter of minutes the dogs relax too at the sound with each of them resting with their owner It brings about a state of healing Since Covid happened I think we have all become much more aware of the fact that our mind and spirit need to heal as much as our bodies do this is very much the same for our dogs Jack is well now and we re working on maintaining his health and quality of life ALWAYS HOPE No stone was left unturned in this journey to bring Jack healing both physical and mental Now Niki has founded Jack s Giant Journey to help more abused disabled dogs recover too I never chose to have my first disabled dogs years ago it just happened Niki recalls She was with me as a rescue then glaucoma took her sight and as she aged she began having trouble walking so I did all the adjustments needed I kind of fell into it and it was the same with starting Jack s Giant Journey really At first Niki had started a Facebook page about Jack to put him forward for an award There was no intention to go any further than that but then she says things changed Jack won the award Best Rescue of the Year and meanwhile the people we worked with in Egypt reached out to get help for another dog I said yes and people were asking how they could contribute where they could donate in the end I just had to do it Niki says We have now started up a rescue and sanctuary a rescue for dogs who can be eventually rehomed and a sanctuary for those who cannot We have a girl coming in soon who had a chain on her neck so tight her flesh grew around it Whatever needs to be done for her to be well it will be done Jack s journey was the first of its kind but not the last From lying in a gutter in Egypt to being the first recovery of what s hopefully going to be a long series Jack s life is very different from anything he s known up to the point he was left at death s door Deciding when to press on and when it s time to give up is one of the hardest calls an animal owner and rescuer can make The answer is not always clear cut outcomes cannot always be predicted People do the best they can with the information they have according to their beliefs But perhaps there is at least some truth to the words Elisa Kissa berg heard in a Cairo shelter There is always hope unless it is rabies P Pet Friendly Pay Per Seat Private Jet Charter C M Y CM MY CY CMY K Changing the question to enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk How can I turn my garden into a safe doggie play area EXPERT ADVICE Dr Anna Foreman in house vet at Everypaw Pet Insurance shares her tips to create a safe canine play space in the garden D og play areas in the garden are a great idea to provide your dog with a safe space to exercise and have fun Dogs should ideally be walked at least once daily but there are many reasons why dogs or their owners may not be able to get out and about so often for example due to reactivity or physical disabilities A safe play area can act as a great alternative to a walk in such dogs or as an add on for mental and physical stimulation in most A play area should be enclosed so that a dog can run around freely within it This means that borders should be well fenced and secured larger dogs need fences of at least six feet to prevent them from jumping over be well bedded into the ground to prevent a dog from squeezing under or digging a hole and boundaries should be regularly maintained to check for faults The area should be equipped with dog safe toys and equipment if a dog tends to chew or scavenge things this should be taken into consideration when building the area especially if not on a lead Dogs should always be watched and monitored when in a play area particularly if with other dogs as accidents can always occur 10 Dogs Today May 2023 THINGS THAT CAN BE INCLUDED IN A PLAY AREA Rest area Shaded sheltered area of fresh drinking water Agility equipment tunnels jumps platforms etc for an owner to train the dog to use Toys interactive toys such as tug ropes are great for owners to play with their dogs or for two dogs to play supervised together Puzzle games if a dog is not living with another dog or if they simply prefer their own company then puzzle games are a great alternative to physical play and help keep the brain mentally stimulated Puzzle foods puzzle or activity feeders dispense food as they are moved or chewed by an animal and are great active ways of feeding a dog a meal instead of using a bowl Plenty dogs as it can cause an obstruction in the stomach or intestines If it doesn t cause a blockage in these locations there is the risk of it causing constipation in the large intestines colon especially if an animal is dehydrated Bark consumption may also lead to damage to the inside of a dog s mouth a gastrointestinal upset or even an obstruction of their guts and so is not suitable to use in a play area if a dog likes to chew bark not all dogs do however POOLS AND PONDS IS SAND DANGEROUS FOR DOGS Providing a sand pit will be appreciated by keen diggers keep it covered when not in use to discourage cats from using it as a litter tray and keep clean and dry Replace regularly and when soiled as with a child s sand pit Sand is dangerous if ingested by Dogs should always be monitored around ponds and pools Unlike with human pools chlorine should not be used in water that dogs swim in as consumption can lead to toxicity and skin contact will cause irritation Dogs may urinate or defecate in the water without an owner knowing and then drink from the same water leaving them open to bacterial and parasitic conditions this water would also put human health at risk if accidently ingested too Water should be changed regularly to prevent contaminant build up and basins kept clean regularly with a dog safe disinfectant Water should be relatively shallow to prevent the risk of drowning particularly with small young or disabled dogs It is important to have ramps leading into and out of the water to allow dogs to enter and exit without a struggle particularly if dogs have reduced mobility Ramps also allow wildlife to enter and exit without an issue too Covers should be used with caution many animals can drown in swimming pools or other flexible water covers as they become enclosed and suffocated by the material due to its lack of rigidity P There are two main safety considerations when creating a play area The first is physical dangers the risk of injury cuts burns wounds from playing with other dogs etc in a play area is high as dogs tend to become excited in an enclosed space with many toys and activities It is essential dogs are watched closely when in a play area The second risk is the danger of over using a play area instead of taking a dog for a walk Although daily walks are not suitable for all dogs there is the risk of a play area being used as an easy option instead of taking an able non reactive dog for a walk There are many benefits of a dog going for a walk over using a play area which are vital for developing adult and senior dogs walking running for physical stimulation and the mental stimulation of smells and new experiences A young dog needs to encounter new places and things while they are developing to prevent behavioural issues later in life due to a lack of exposure if they are not exposed to other dogs humans and phenomena such as traffic when out and about then it will be much harder for them to learn positively when experiencing these things later in life They are much more likely to react badly to such experiences with these behaviours hard to combat once started Adult dogs need plenty of exercise to maintain muscle mass stop obesity from developing and to keep their brains active many dogs develop behavioural issues from a lack of mental and physical stimulation particularly working breeds Senior dogs still need to maintain muscle mass and it is particularly at this age that they benefit from using brains sniffing and encountering new things when out and about It is vital not to substitute walking a dog for letting them out into the play area to exercise themselves however tempting it might be It should be used as an add on to daily walks and only in extreme cases of behavioural or physical issues should it be used as a substitute if walking is not appropriate Play areas should not be used to leave a dog in while an owner is out of the house there are too many dangers to leaving a dog outside for long periods of time with the risk of theft escape or injury high Dogs can also suffer with separation anxiety and be a nuisance to neighbours if left barking in the garden for a long period of time leading to behavioural problems and complaints May 2023 Dogs Today 11

4 Ask a close friend or family member to pet sit on moving day On the day of the move arrange for your dog to stay with a trusted friend or family member while the house is being loaded and unloaded This will reduce the risk of your dog straying or getting scared by unfamiliar people such as removal company employees It will also allow you to complete the move as quickly and efficiently as possible without the added worry of your pet getting in the way or upset on the day What should I do when moving house with my dog Beagle Photo posed by models Cockerpoo Photo posed by models Quick question 5 Get any noisy DIY out the way Depending on how long your pet can stay away aim to get any noisy DIY jobs such as drilling and hammering done before they join you in the house You don t want their first impression of their new home to be a scary or overwhelming one 6 Try to maintain their typical routine Keeping your pet especially dogs to their usual routine will help with the settling in process For example try to maintain the same feeding procedures as you did at your old address as this will create less disruption If your pet is used to being fed in the kitchen try to do the same in your new home When it comes to their walking or sleep routine aim to mimic this too While your pet can be flexible and the odd hour or day won t make a drastic difference it s important to remember that too much change at once could have a negative effect and they may start to show signs of this in their behaviour EXPERT ADVICE Dog behaviour and training specialist Sue Ketland shares 10 tips for making the transition safe and stress free 1 Gradually prepare your pet for the move Moving house is an unsettling time for a human let alone an animal who isn t involved in the decisionmaking process or aware of what s happening next For this reason it s a good idea to start by slowly preparing your pet for the house move over time The earlier you start the more time they will have to adjust With dogs moving house can be an easier experience compared to cats as dogs tend to form stronger bonds with their owners rather than being attached to a specific place However the disruption of a move can still be stressful for dogs as they thrive on routine There are a few things you can do to prepare your pet for the move For example try to acclimatise them to the sight and sound of boxes or items being packed and moved in your current home while maintaining a consistent routine as much as possible Depending on how far away your new home is walk them around the neighbourhood or to the local 12 Dogs Today May 2023 park Not only will this introduce them to the new sights sounds and smells but it will get you both excited for your future routine together Also it s a great way to get to know other dog walkers in the area and make friends ahead of the move 2 Make sure your new garden is pet proof Before your four legged friend officially moves into your new house make sure the garden is secure To prevent your dog from running away or any fall outs with the new neighbours carefully inspect how secure the boundary is If there are holes in the fence or big gaps in the hedge then it won t be long before your dog sniffs an escape route 3 Register with a local vet If you re moving further afield don t forget to register with a vet in your new area Have this on your to do list ahead of the move to ensure that you have medical support nearby In the unfortunate event that something does happen to your pet shortly after you move in at least you are prepared for it 7 Plan how to safely transport your pet When your house is prepped and ready for the arrival of your pet make sure you have a plan for transporting them there especially if it s a significant journey to your new address In line with The Highway Code you will need a doggie seatbelt or a vet approved pet carrier to transport your furry friend by car Also consider appropriate stop off points en route especially if they are nervous travellers or the journey will take more than two hours Have a bowl some of their favourite treats and spare water packed in the car ready for any rest breaks 8 Keep something familiar in their new home Bring some things to their new home that will remind your dog of their old environment For instance avoid washing your pet s bedding ahead of the move or buying a new bed as their scent will help them to settle in faster 9 Take time off work It s also recommended that you take a few days off work while both you and your pet settle into your new home Try to avoid going straight back to the office and leaving them alone in an unfamiliar place for an extended period of time 10 Get professional support if your pet is acting out of character If your pet is showing signs of being distressed or depressed it s important to seek professional help sooner rather than later Pacing whinging shaking hiding damaging the home and not wanting to eat are all signs that your pet might be struggling with the move There are a wide range of support services available to help both you and your furry companion For instance Woodgreen Pet Charity have experts and behaviourists on hand to offer free advice and support at all times from managing behavioural issues to financial concerns Try not to panic and remember to be patient with your pet Like you they will need time to adjust to their new environment With the right support and guidance your pet will soon settle into their new home and be back to their happy playful selves P May 2023 Dogs Today 13

2023 element of Where have you been and What time do you call this You are not a star in the canine world you are just a pal who should have been home an hour ago GOOD SPORT The Chris Pratt story is one of a man who has a spirit of fun and has often needed it At school he was a wrestling champion and a top shotputter Teachers asked him what he proposed to do with his life thinking that he might be a professional sportsman I just told them that I didn t really have any plans but I knew I would be famous one day and make a load of money he said I don t think any of them actually believed that I would but at least they had some Maybe I could have been a fulltime dog walker I was fit enough and had a great love and admiration for dogs Perhaps I have missed my true vocation Oh well I guess I shall just have to keep acting and be a dog s manservant part time The trouble is that dogs don t pay and they actually expect you to pay for all their food their leads and all that kind of stuff They expect a decent bed too Since I know what it is like to be homeless and sleep on a beach I can understand where they are coming from I am joking of course dogs do pay Every time they look at you with those great expressive eyes grin at you when they are pleased and look so incredibly ashamed when they are being told off they pay you a lot more than money They are also better actors than me Chris has had a number of dogs during his life but at the moment he is besotted with Maverick My wife Katherine and her sister rescued seven puppies and found homes for them all well nearly all he explained Maverick was the last to need a home so Katherine adopted him herself and they just became the best of friends straight away When it came to the point of Maverick was the last to need a home so Katherine adopted him herself and they became the best of friends When it came to the point of introducing us he looked to her for guidance and based his decisions on her opinions As it happens she kind of liked me and he understood that and adopted me as a rescue human We became pals pretty well straight away introducing us Maverick took one look at me and then looked at Katherine with a whole batch of questions like Is this guy for real or Do you really like this guy He looked to her for guidance and based his decisions on her opinions As it happens she kind of liked me and he understood that and adopted me as a rescue human We became pals pretty well straight away I have lots of different pets from goldfish to lizards kune pigs and all sorts of things I just love all kinds of animals and wildlife and plants I even have a Venus flytrap plant which is great but you can t take a Venus flytrap for a walk Maverick and I go for walks and out in the car He s a great pal Maverick is a kind of brindle mix and is already very famous MAVERICK MUSE Katherine calls him her co writer because she has written books about dogs and other subjects and Maverick sits with her all the time Chris revealed So she has often called him her co author and he even receives fan mail probably more than me I think that it is great to provide a home for a dog that needs it Once they feel part of the family and that this is their home they are not going to be shunted from one place to another and meeting with different people they settle and you can see their confidence rising They start to trust you and have some fun with you You are their family they have a family at last They have finally found happiness and they love you for it Knowing that you have contributed towards the happiness of a dog is such a great feeling and more rewarding than any Oscar Chris has not won an Oscar yet although he has had countless other acting awards It would be nice but not essential and let s face it every time a dog gives you that special welcome home greeting it is reward enough P May 2023 Dogs Today 19

Six of the best When someone commits to bringing a dog or cat to a sterilisation clinic they make a much greater commitment than one would imagine Attending a sterilisation clinic requires a full day A full day for someone who is supporting a family is a huge sacrifice Once the pets are registered there is surprisingly little barking Occasionally a new dog who feels the need to announce his arrival may shout at anyone who might listen but it s too hot to bark for long Cats wrapped in just a towel sit on laps next to large panting dogs People cuddle their pets console their worried children and wait for their dog or cat s first sedative Soon after they watch their pet being carried away by a veterinary surgeon or volunteer into a sea of tables where a three day surgery marathon is underway PET ASSEMBLY LINE The children have the chance to attend educational workshops The adults however silently observe the results of the compassion and hard work that has gone into making an event like this operate smoothly Volunteers chat with some individuals or families to let them know in hushed tones that their pet did well in surgery and is now in recovery Everyone looks up when they arrive hoping it s news about their cat or dog Many of those waiting have been sitting in the hot sun for several hours In recovery more volunteers spend the day with an assembly line of unconscious dogs and cats gently soothing them back to consciousness 22 Dogs Today May 2023 Training A Different Dog As a force free qualified knowledgeable trainer based in St Albans serving the better We visited the small community that sprung up some years ago with the original homes simple lean tos with pallets tarps and bits of tin Now houses are gradually being built and there are signs that life has improved for many This neighbourhood benefits most from local sterilisation clinics There is now status in being considered a responsible pet owner Our guide was a local volunteer show us their already sterilised pets Healthy looking dogs frolicked in the dirt road One young woman broke down in tears and explained how grateful she had been to have her pet spayed at a previous Words DR ANITA DOWE Changing pace For all training a dog s focus is key But what can you do when your dog struggles to engage because they are super aroused and can t concentrate W DR ANITA DOWE BVSc approach to behaviour struggles focusing on both physical and emotional health while ensuring behaviour modification plans are both fun and achievable for the dog and owner www themindfulpetowner com 24 Dogs Today May 2023 hen you are faced with a situation where you understand what you are trying to achieve with the training you know how to execute the strategies or the games with your dog but they can t engage with you because their brain is going a mile a minute and they simply can t focus what are you meant to do You can feel really defeated The situation can feel hopeless because let s face it if your dog can t engage with you or take food rewards how are you meant to do the training The good news is all is not lost Every behaviour struggle can be broken down into a list of skills we need to build For some dogs focusing on their mental arousal levels is the key that unlocks success in all other areas For other dogs it is the very first piece in the puzzle that is required before we can start to work on the other skills required for them to be able to make better choices So let s take a few minutes and really break down what I mean by mental arousal levels In essence I am talking about how excited their brains are At a low level of mental arousal they will be quite calm and relaxed They will move slowly and quite fluidly As their mental arousal increases you will notice their responses to stimuli will intensify For example they may slowly walk up for some fuss at low level mental arousal As their arousal increases they may get a bit of a bounce in their step and their tail starts wagging As their arousal increases further they may bound up making excited noises or barking and they may jump up at you for a pat When their mental arousal is really high some dogs may paw at you and scratch your legs jump around uncontrollably or pull at your clothes etc You can see similar changes in humans as their mental arousal increases Imagine the difference in how a child may act whether at home at school with friends or at Disneyland As mental arousal level increases their movements change but more importantly as their arousal level increases so does the intensity of emotions they are experiencing whether they are positive or negative emotions and their ability to make great choices Just like meditation in people pace changes and the resulting developed arousal levels take time to build However the results really transform behaviour struggles AROUSAL SPECTRUM Not all dogs can think with high arousal levels just like people We all have people in our lives who live at different ends of the spectrum when it comes to stressful situations There are the ones who can continue to think clearly and make great choices and others who might have a meltdown and end up yelling at people for no apparent reason Our dogs can have similar spectrums of skill when faced with high arousal Some dogs just like people will have more of a light switch regarding their arousal levels They are either on or off slow or go they move from 0 to 100 quickly and there doesn t appear to be much between these two extremes What this leaves us with is a dog that not only lives in a state of extreme arousal but also lives a life of emotional extremes because remember as arousal increases or decreases so does the intensity of the emotions they are feeling This essentially leaves us with a dog either in a low arousal state or a dog in a high arousal state experiencing the best thing ever or worst thing ever In real life this results in a dog that has high intensity reactions positive or negative to low level stimuli such as a leaf blowing past surprising them and resulting in them panicking and running or high level stimuli such as a car backfiring as it drives past resulting in the dog panicking and running In comparison the dog with a well developed range of responses to arousal will have appropriate responses to the level of the stimuli he encounters For example a leaf blowing past may result in the dog looking in that direction if there is any response at all GO SLOW So how do we develop an arousal regulation system with more levels than 0 and 100 There are several different activities that you can do with your dog to develop more levels At their core we are focusing on changing what your dog is physically doing to change what they are mentally doing In humans it is more straightforward because we can give someone verbal instructions on how to calm their mind For example the advice often involves focusing on your breathing if you have ever suffered from nervousness anxiety or stress You are specifically slowing down your breathing By slowing down your breathing you are telling your nervous system that it is safe it can calm down and so your heart rate reduces and the stress chemicals stop being released into your body You start to feel much calmer This is obviously a very simplified explanation of this process but the overall effect of you changing your physical output slowing down your breathing changes your mental output Of course it isn t that simple with our dogs because we can t just tell them to take deep breaths and calm their thoughts So we need to do this another way While there are multiple ways to achieve this the technique I find most helpful is pace changes May 2023 Dogs Today match my owner s pace So we end up with a dog who can very efficiently match your pace as it changes but their arousal level is not responding But never fear being able to match your pace as it changes is an important first step Step two is getting the arousal change The good thing about your dog s arousal level is that they can t fake it The pattern and quality of their movement gives you all the information you need about their arousal level Higher arousal results in faster sharper and more jerky movements As the arousal level lowers the movements become smooth and flowing You ll also see changes in head position tail position and movement ear position and movement their ability to engage with you and their ability to follow cues and take food When you notice these physical changes you can be confident that an arousal shift has occurred and you can reduce your pace again Once you have grown this skill MY TOP TIPS FOR SETTING YOU AND YOUR DOG UP FOR SUCCESS If you are new to this start in a low level distraction environment in the house back garden or a quiet car park for example Use your regular walking equipment harness lead collar etc Have your lead relatively short and loose so your dog stays with you this is not a sniffari they can do that before or after this activity it s a focused exercise When you first try pace changes I highly recommend doing separate 30 to 60 second sessions trying out the different patterns turning left and right and with your dog on the outside and the inside Some dogs find specific patterns easier we want to grow the easiest option for them Once you ve identified the pattern for them your first goal should be building up to five minutes at a brisk pace without slowing down Film your sessions in a comfortable environment for example in the house or garden you can start taking this out to environments with increasing distractions The result is a dog with a well developed arousal regulation system and more appropriate reactions to stimuli as well as an amazing tool in your training toolkit that you can use to bring their arousal levels back down when you need to P Caring and compassionate pet euthanasia in your own home Cloud 9 Vets is your trusted UK nationwide provider of gentle at home pet euthanasia If you are considering whether the time is right to put my dog to sleep or put my cat to sleep you can talk to our understanding specially trained Care Coordinators who will help you through this dif cult decision Please call us to arrange a Cloud 9 Vet home visit or to ask any questions you might have Calls from landlines are free via an 08000 number and lines are manned 7am 8pm on weekdays and 8am 6pm at weekends You will be treated with the utmost compassion and care To arrange an at home visit or for personal help and support please call us 08000 354 999 www cloud9vets co uk 28 Dogs Today May 2023

Words EMMA JUDSON Great crate training Step by step guide to a distress free force free crate trained dog or pup P Step 1 CRATE TREATS Sit beside the open doorway of the crate The door should be wide open as far as it will go Ideally you should sit at the side of the crate where the door would latch shut Have your pot of treats with you and of course your dog or puppy Show your dog the treats if necessary and then toss one treat into the crate Your dog should follow the treat into the crate to eat it A dog who has never seen a 30 Dogs Today May 2023 crate before or who has and is generally OK with the idea will go straight in A dog who has already been terrified of a crate or is generally nervous may not go straight in If this is the case put the treat right by the door and start with rewarding them for just approaching the crate It is really important to note that your dog or pup can come straight out of the crate once they have eaten the treat It is entirely their choice This article is from the fabulous Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions book which is now available as an audiobook available from Kobo and Audiobooks at 9 99 and coming soon to Amazon and Google Play The print and e books are available on Amazon Photo posed by a model lease read this guide thoroughly before making a start as it is important that every single step of this is carried out and nothing is skipped It is also important to understand before you start why it is vital to crate train your dog Crates are often seen as a place to lock a naughty dog or a place where dogs are left shut away for long hours It is true that they can be misused just like any other item of dog related equipment However once properly trained your dog can find being crated reassuring and a visual cue to relax and go to sleep Crates can be used to aid in toilet training dealing with fear or reactivity introducing new dogs and in rehabilitation from illness or injury Crates are commonly used when transporting dogs at the groomer s and of course in a veterinary surgery or hospital Unless you can guarantee that your dog is never going to travel be groomed go to the vet s or require confined rest something you can only do if you can see the future then your dog needs to know how to handle being crated Note crate training will never involve your dog being shut in against his will There will be no crying or whining or scrabbling or barking in an attempt to get out of the crate If there are any of the above signs you are not following the instructions correctly You will need one wire crate appropriately sized for your dog with a bed or blanket inside If you have a large breed puppy who is currently tiny a small crate which is big enough for your dog right now is OK for training purposes You ll also need one pot of very highvalue treats cheese hot dog or chicken whatever your dog likes best and a food dispensing toy such as a Kong hang around inside the crate hoping for more treats If he does that he has chosen to be in there of his own free will so reward that Keep tossing in treats and praising your dog but don t be tempted to shut that door yet The rule is super simple going into the crate earns a treat Not going into the crate or coming out of the crate doesn t earn a treat Even the daftest of dogs can work out the very simple maths here In crate goodies Out of crate 0 goodies Play the treats are in the crate game for a few minutes If you only get a pup zooming in and out of the crate happily for treats that is fine at this stage If you get a pup or adult dog who goes into the crate then hovers to see if more treats will happen without them having to come out and go in again reward that Put more treats in before your dog comes out again Ideally we want the dog to Step 2 CRATE MORE TREATS By the end of the first session or two your dog is hopefully starting to think that hanging around in the crate might be an easy way to earn more treats If he isn t continue with step one For step two sit slightly to the side of the crate and when he goes in for his first treat start popping a treat or two through the bars This is why we are using a wire crate and not a fabric one Your dog is probably still going in the crate and remaining standing so now I would put two or three treats further back into the crate and see if he lies down to eat them If he does reward that with a small handful through the bars ideally delivered so that he doesn t have to get up to reach them Give lots of praise for this When he is going in and lying down and clearly expecting treats to be delivered you can begin to pause for just a fraction of a second before doing so This is the how you begin to build up the time he stays in the crate Again remember to keep away from that crate door forget it even exists for the time being Step 3 MOVING AROUND YOU NOT HIM By now your dog should be zooming into the crate and lying down He probably won t need to be bribed in there with a treat but he will still need treats for going in and staying in there Vary the length of time he waits for his treat So lots of times he gets the treats almost straight away and sometimes he waits for a few seconds or even up to one minute May 2023 Dogs Today 31

When you are at that level you can begin to shift your position while he is inside the crate This means you can shuffle further away or to the side to begin with then shuffle back and reward him for having done nothing The reality is of course that he has done a wonderful thing he s chosen to stay in the crate despite you moving Remember to move only a tiny bit and move in whichever direction or fashion is least likely to encourage him to move hence shuffling rather than standing up at this stage It s also important to remember to keep the time you spend away very brief so you may even need to just lean your body away then back and then reward before shuffling away Then you can slowly work on edging away Step 4 FIND YOUR FEET You are ready for this stage if you can lean shuffle or edge away from your dog in the crate in a variety of directions This should be for a minimum of 30 seconds and ideally a maximum of around two minutes before you return and reward him Watch your dog carefully now Does he look relaxed and comfortable Or does he look like he s ready to spring up and out of the crate You want relaxed and comfortable If he is looking anxious and ready to spring up and out go back a bit Reduce the frequency the distance or the time you are away Possibly all three Increase the value of the reward too so that it s more fun for him It is really important not to skip this stage or rush it because now you are going to be standing up instead of sitting by the crate Initially you want to start out sitting and stand up while he is in there Wait until he is relaxed in the crate Stand up slowly and drop in a few treats by bending over Then squat or kneel back down You can sit if it s easy for you to jump up and down from sitting For this stage you are just going to be working on kneeling squatting near the cage and then standing up and rewarding and back down again Do not step away from the crate at this point Mix it up with work from the earlier steps So sometimes sit and reward for him staying sometimes sit and lean away or sit and bumshuffle away and back and reward It is important that going in the crate does not become an accurate predictor or visual cue that tells your dog you will be leaving because if your dog has an issue with being left this will be a big problem Mix up the work so that sometimes the reward is for something your dog finds easy to cope with and sometimes it s for something he finds harder Resist the trap of making his task harder and harder every single time because that leads to dogs predicting and becoming sour to the lesson you are teaching 32 Dogs Today May 2023 Step 5 STEPPING AWAY Now you should have a dog who really couldn t give a damn if you are sat close sat a foot away bumshuffling around leaning in and out standing up or squatting down All he knows is he s in the crate and he gets treats for stopping in there and that s good If your crate is located where it is available for your dog to go into at any time you should find that he will choose to go in there even outside of a training session If that is the case randomly reward him for that Just walk by and drop a tasty morsel in to him You could also offer him his meals or treat filled Kongs in there now The next step is to ask him to go in the crate and then you stand up and step away Just one step and then step back and reward Build that up over the course of several sessions until you can take several steps away pause return and reward and he doesn t bat an eyelid Really resist the urge to shut him in there now There s a good chance you d get away with it at this stage but you could easily cause a problem if he panics The last thing we want is him learning that he can t get out That would make him fear the crate Step 6 GOING AWAY Photo posed by a model Watch your dog carefully now Does he look relaxed and comfortable Or does he look like he s ready to spring up and out of the crate You should not be starting this step until your dog or pup is belting into the crate lying down falling asleep in there happy to eat meals or treats in there offering you I m in my crate behaviours and is actually sometimes found in the crate when you have been out of the room So for this session start with your dog in the crate Reward him step away step back reward him walk around the crate reward him and step outside the door ideally an internal door or otherwise pop out of sight for just a split second then back without much in the way of fuss and reward him Repeat this and mix it up again as we did before so that going in the crate does not necessarily mean you will be leaving the room or going out of sight

Photo posed by a model In the long term your dog won t care if the door is open or closed because being in the crate has always been rewarding Coming out has never been an issue and isn t rewarding Keep working on this stage until you can leave the room for a few minutes You could leave and go to another floor of your house Or you could leave the room and leave the house All for just a few minutes On your return your dog should still be in the crate You may need to set up your crate in another room or use a phone or webcam to record him If possible practise some of the earlier stages in other rooms of your home This isn t always possible because not every home has several rooms with space for a crate and for you to work around it If you can it will really help your dog generalise that the crate is cool no matter where it is When changing location the golden rule is to step back down a level or two so that the work is a little easier This is to compensate for the new location which makes things a little harder At this point if you come back and your dog is not in the crate I would say nothing It s likely you have gone too fast You ve probably 34 Dogs Today May 2023 tried to be out too long or too far away The important thing here is to make a note of that go back a step or two and spend a bit more time working on an earlier level It is not the end of the world if this happens No one died so don t get upset and certainly don t get angry Step 7 CLOSING THE DOOR OMG yes really So now you should have a dog who loves his crate wants to be in his crate and stays in his crate hoping for his reward while you move around the home Now you will go all the way back down to step one but you will push the crate door closed gently You will be sat by the crate again as you were at the beginning putting treats through the bars of the crate Here s the really important part the split second your dog approaches the door reaches out to nudge it or paw it or push it you fling that door open fast You do that You do not at any stage ever wait for your dog to try to get the door open themselves So let s say your dog approached the crate door and you flung it wide open for him He has probably come out and looked at you like What Say nothing just give your dog a second or two and see if he offers going in the crate If he does reward him If he doesn t within a second or two then toss a treat in the crate and start again What your dog is learning here is that he is never ever trapped in the crate even if it looks like he is You are opening the door and releasing him before he feels trapped but there is no reward for coming out In the long term your dog won t care if the door is open or closed because being in the crate has always been rewarding Coming out has never been an issue and isn t rewarding If a dog is ever trapped in a crate two things happen Firstly they feel fear and they distrust the crate Secondly when they get out coming out has then been extremely rewarding The relief from feeling trapped in there is massively reinforcing By never allowing your dog to feel trapped you never allow him to feel that relief Gradually rework your way through all the steps with the door pushed closed but really importantly at this point not latched shut You will need to stay near enough to the crate that you can flip the door open fast Work steadily enough that you are sure your dog won t try to get out before you are ready to release him Step 8 LOCKING THE DOOR So to recap by now you should have a dog who will stay in the crate with the door open or the door pushed closed whether you are in the room or you have popped in and out or stepped out for a few minutes He should be really relaxed in there and want to remain in there for the rewards you will still be giving him He should also be used to some period of waiting before those rewards happen He should never have tried to get out of the crate by pushing nudging or pawing at the door Enjoy Lake District Luxury With Your Dog at Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel The perfect destination for pet owners to enjoy a luxurious stay in the heart of the Lake District Set amidst stunning scenery with plenty of nearby walks and attractions to explore plus spacious and comfortable rooms our friendly staff are always on hand to ensure that your dog feels as welcome as you do Special promotion Dogs stay free when you mention Dogs Today Terms One dog per double room Dog friendly rooms bookable via phone only 01539 432375 www holbeckghyll com

Step 9 INCREASING THE TIME CRATED By now you should have a dog who is totally happy to go in his crate have the door pushed shut randomly earn rewards in there have the door locked while you move around the room step outside the room and even the house for up to around four or five minutes Now you build duration for real sometimes leaving him for slightly longer Again try not to do this as a neat linear progression Do not leave him for five minutes on day one 10 minutes on day two and 15 minutes on day three as the chances are he s going to predict that the crate now means being left and that s not fun for him Instead mix things up Maybe he s in there for five minutes on day one but on day two you just potter around in the same room as the crate Maybe on day three he s in there for 10 minutes but you are in and out of the house unloading shopping perhaps and on day four you only do five minutes but you are sitting reading a magazine and mostly ignoring him The point is it s gradual but it s no big deal for him It s not a predictor for something awful 36 Dogs Today May 2023 Photo posed by a model If your dog has done that don t panic Go back a few stages and re do the foundations again and go a little slower If you are keeping a diary of your progress you may be able to pinpoint where you rushed something or where something went a bit wrong So to introduce the door being locked go back a few steps probably to stepping away and stepping in and out of the room This time after a few goes with the door pushed shut lock it wait a few seconds without moving then unlock it and continue the session I would not end a session immediately after opening the crate door Instead throughout the session mix up closing and locking the door with leaving the door open This means your dog is not predicting the door being unlocked and opened as either a release cue or cue for his reward and end of session Never use your crate as a place to shut a dog as punishment It must stay a safe and rewarding place and he must like being in there Because he has never felt trapped because he s never felt any reinforcing relief at being released from the crate being in the crate is not a big deal The fact that he can t come out at this point is totally irrelevant to him because he does not want to come out in the first place BEYOND STEP NINE If you have a crate and will use it regularly it s a good idea to keep rewarding your dog for being in there even after he seems totally comfy about it It s also a good idea to pop him in there for a minute or two when you answer the door or when a guest comes in or to give him a tasty bone just so that he feels it s a wonderful place to be and it doesn t mean you are going out If you don t have a crate set up all the time do get your crate out from time to time and practise with it That way it is not a shock to him when a non doggie visitor comes to stay and you need to use it or when he has to stay at the vet s or you are going to take him on holiday and need to use it there Never use your crate as a place to shut a dog as punishment It must stay a safe and rewarding place and he must like being in there It should go without saying that you should not abuse your dog s good nature and shut him in there for more than four hours at a time It will take you some time probably months with a puppy to work up to that length of time anyway Do not allow anyone to tease or torment your dog when he is in the crate We want to avoid him feeling trapped and a sure fire way to create problems is to allow someone or another animal to tease your dog while crated This may seem a very longwinded way of crating your dog It s likely you are thinking But I could just shut him in there and he might cry but eventually he will get used to it Some dogs will get over it and some just suffer in distress quietly their stress showing up in seemingly unrelated behaviours Some dogs very obviously don t get over it They will wreck crates or physically hurt themselves or yell their heads off A lot of people appear to think a dog screaming and scrabbling to get out of a crate is a dog acting out or a dog who needs to get over himself That really couldn t be further from the truth Trapping an animal in a small space is incredibly stressful if not outright terrifying Even if your dog never associates that fear with you it will have a knock on effect on his ability to learn settle and generally be a happy relaxed dog I disagree that this crate training process is actually all that longwinded If you are starting out with a puppy you can get through the first five or six stages in under a week The later stages would only take longer because a puppy physically can t be left all that long Frankly if you don t have a couple of weeks to train a puppy should you really have taken one on It may well take a little longer with an adult dog but we are talking about five to 10 minute sessions to start with a couple of times a day It isn t anywhere near the huge undertaking it may seem while reading this through P Six of the best Outdoor Fun Muck Boot Exercising your dog should be fun so making sure you are Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK Deadly rage Recently we got word that a young Cocker Spaniel had been put to sleep after a diagnosis of Cocker rage never getting a chance to be seen by a qualified behaviourist Was this pup killed by a persistent myth F or some the words Cocker rage syndrome may feel like an undesirable blast from the past It is not a recognised medical or veterinary diagnosis and is considered by many experts to be a myth yet it was if you ll excuse the pun all the rage in the late 90s As much as we d often like to pretend otherwise it s been well over two decades since the turn of the millennium so why are we here in 2023 to talk about a syndrome whose very existence has been widely discredited The answer is as simple as it s disheartening because even now outdated myths and terminology are costing dogs their lives In February we received a heartbreaking message about a young Cocker Spaniel only 17 months 38 Dogs Today May 2023 old whose owner had contacted a behaviourist for help with what sounded like a fairly straightforward case of resource guarding and body handling issues In the couple of days it took the behaviourist to get back in touch however the dog was put to sleep due to a vet diagnosis of Cocker rage a now discredited condition that was once believed to affect Cocker Spaniels in particular There is likely a kernel of truth at the heart of this myth some of the dogs observed showing sudden unexplainable aggression did suffer from a neurological issue However this issue was present in different breeds It may have been overrepresented among Cocker Spaniels due to how common they were as pets or due to poor breeding practices Either way one thing is clear this poorly named condition refers to a vanishingly rare occurrence when compared to the many different reasons why a dog may show signs of aggression and other behavioural problems Nicki Glencross trustee of UK charity Spaniel Aid says What was once referred to as Cocker rage a term we never use is a neurological seizure like issue that causes an aggressive burst followed by a trance like state It is extremely rare and far from exclusive to spaniels In my role as behaviour team coordinator for Spaniel Aid I work closely with all our behaviourists While I am not one myself I see and hear firsthand the advice they give to fosterers adopters and people approaching to ask for our help DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION We had plenty of people contact us to relinquish their dogs and they said it was due to Cocker rage either they had read about it online or a vet had made the diagnosis in some cases the diagnosis had come from trainers too And it should go without saying that without at least a brain scan no neurological condition can be diagnosed with any degree of certainty Nearly every time they describe the behaviour and the circumstances in which the dog showed aggression our behaviourists can see a variety of far more likely reasons for it from resource guarding to an unsuitable environment We had cases when a neurological condition was likely involved but they were few and far in between While aggression stemming from a neurological condition can happen it s a rare occurrence In most cases behaviourists can identify external causes and triggers and work on them in order to manage and correct the dog s behaviour Not all dogs can be helped but when a discredited condition such as Cocker rage is simply assumed before any behaviourist can help as was the case for the pup whose story prompted this article then the dog simply doesn t have a chance Once a myth is out there it s hard to get rid of it Nicki says There are still vets out there that will diagnose a behavioural issue as Cocker rage as well as outdated information that remains online to be found by dog owners searching for answers about their dog s behaviour I couldn t give the number of dogs who come to us because they are suspected of having Cocker rage but it was many and they were saved from just being put to sleep If a dog comes to us with behavioural issues and the foster carer needs support from one of our behaviourists they work together to create a plan to make adjustments and training to help the dog if it starts to work we re confident it is a behaviour issue rather than a neurological condition In the vast majority of cases behavioural support is enough to manage the behaviour to the point the dog can be rehomed ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Quite often no support is needed at all and everything wrong with the dog s behaviour comes down to being in the wrong environment For example the Springer Spaniel cross I adopted Luna was described as being unable to settle and very excitable However with her previous owner she was living in a small home along with two young children Since she came to a bigger home with an older child I have not seen any of those issues She just needed a different environment Unfortunately some myths are hard to put to rest There are still a lot of people out there and vets going with the dominance theory too which has long since been disproven Nicki says Yet I still see posts on spaniel groups with people saying their dog is dominant or that their vet is saying the dog is dominant And this causes dogs to be mishandled and misunderstood it only makes behavioural problems worse If the behaviour is not addressed correctly it can cost lives Part of the problem though is that behaviourists across the country are incredibly busy Lockdown played a massive part in the increase of dog ownership and qualified behaviourists have waiting lists of months while people are at the end of their tether dealing with their dogs behavioural issues Dogs bred poorly to meet lockdown demand and sold to owners who were not prepared that s a recipe for disasters Working Cocker Spaniels are not generally ideal for first time dog owners A lot of people surrendering their dogs to us are first time dog owners and we can tell they got their dogs during lockdown because the age of the dog fits Dogs are losing their lives because their owners don t know how to handle them and cannot access a behaviourist due to the high demand from others in their same situation All rescues in the UK will tell you they re at a breaking point ourselves included There are a lot of dogs being put to sleep whether or not their vet misdiagnoses them with Cocker rage That said I would advise anyone whose vet diagnosed their dog with Cocker rage to immediately change vets and urgently seek support from a qualified canine behaviourist P May 2023 Dogs Today 39

Words FRAN BARNBROOK most adorable amazing patient and how everyone loved him He kept me updated twice daily on Drew s progress and was so happy when he started to respond and get better I ve dedicated my life to caring for any animal that needed me but my love for these wonderful gentle giants has never waned Now I need a little extra help myself Drew steadies me if I need to lean on him He gives me confidence and strength to go to places I wouldn t have dreamed of going on my own and he lies by my feet in restaurants or out shopping when I stop He loves children and we patiently wait till they are confident enough to pet him CANINE COURAGE Little angel Think assistance dog and you re likely to conjure an image of a yellow Lab or keen energetic spaniel Whatever image appears an Irish Wolfhound is probably not one of them D rew is my assistance dog He s not like your average assistance dog though Drew is a huge Irish Wolfhound He stands 36 inches at the shoulder and at a year old weighs 60 kilos He is so laidback and calm afraid of nothing curious but very gentle My rock We have had Wolfhounds for over 40 years We had to help him so offered to take him in A friend brought him to us and we couldn t believe the sorry mess he was in Drew was bred by a novice breeder and sold to a professional man Nell our puppy at 12 weeks old weighed almost the same as Drew at five 48 Dogs Today May 2023 months He was malnourished and full of allergies He hadn t been vaccinated and was travelling around in the boot of his owner s car He was loved but his previous owner didn t have the knowledge on how to care for a very fastgrowing puppy We gently fed him till his ribs no longer stood out and sorted out his allergies He was doing well and we qualified him for Crufts at his first and only show Drew then developed pneumonia and we almost lost him He was in hospital for a week It was a wrench to all of us We have an unbreakable bond and I wasn t allowed to see him The vet specialist said he was the Drew has given me the confidence to go out on my own after many years of depending on others People told me to get out so many times They just didn t understand I needed that courage I love taking Drew out It s so nice seeing people smile and ask if they can talk to him Unlike most assistance dogs I am more than happy to take the time to share my angel The times I have heard Thank you that made my day Times like these outweigh the nasty comments and people reporting to shop owners about the massive dog on their premises who then have to apologise to me when they see his identity as an assistance dog Bill my husband and I ran dog obedience classes for years so training Drew was easy for us Drew is a young puppy at home He dives about with our younger Wolfhound Nell As soon as he has his harness on and I say working he is a different hound He follows me everywhere and will even step in the shower with me His favourite game is hide and seek Bill will sneak off somewhere in the house and hide then I say Find Daddy Drew will search till he finds him If I m shopping and we get separated I just ask Drew to Find Daddy and he will take me to him I m so lucky to have been given the opportunity to have this amazing creature help me as we have helped him A true gift from heaven P

Postbag Your news views PEACEFUL GOODBYE I ve had dogs all my life but Titch was the one I loved her from the moment I saw her and she was my constant companion at my bedside through chronic illness She put a smile on the face of everyone who met her and we shared a very special bond In 2022 she was diagnosed with a tumour and my vet broke the devastating news that Titch was terminally ill I was so grateful to be able to have a few special weeks with her after her diagnosis but when I started to see her struggle I knew that the time had come I chose to use Cloud 9 Vet at home euthanasia service From my first phone call with one of the care coordinators through to the kind compassionate vet who came to my house I can t praise them enough The vet was so gentle to Titch and so caring to me and she even said the team could help me with support in the coming weeks if I needed someone to talk to The care that they had for a customer that they will only see once was tremendous My vet is wonderful but having a dog put to sleep in a busy vet practice is an entirely different experience to the gentle touch and peace of a familiar environment Being able to be myself and cry all the tears I needed to was much easier in the privacy of my own home My husband and I both agreed that our decision for at home care made Titch s final hours a far better experience for us all and I m so glad that this option was there for me Laurie Ann Kearnes DEBATE RESPONSE In Dogs Today s recent Great Debate feature Jan 2023 Should there be an enquiry into the corporate takeover of the veterinary profession in the UK it was interesting to read the varying perspectives and experiences of pet owners access to veterinary care in the UK The British Veterinary Association takes an evidenceled approach to our policy development advocacy for animal welfare and support for vets backed by robust 52 Dogs Today May 2023 Get in touch We love to hear your news and views and see photos of your dogs Email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk Write to us at Dogs Today The Old Print House 62 High Street Chobham Surrey GU24 8AA Join the debate Voice your opinions on news stories and other topics on our Dogs Today Magazine Facebook page or through our website www dogstoday magazine co uk governance and decision making We are completely independent We represent all our members wherever they work from large corporates through to small independent practices We want to see a strong diverse and resilient vet profession that is able to provide animal owners with access to high quality medical care Therefore we support healthy competition through a diverse range of vet business models to provide clients with choice and to help keep prices competitive As vets we understand that the cost of specialist medical care can sometimes come as a shock particularly when it coincides with anxiety over the health of a much loved family pet However it s important to remember that vet practices have overheads and costs to cover just like any other business In addition medicines and specialist equipment are costly just as with private medical care there are no government subsidies for veterinary care as with the NHS If cost is a concern we would encourage owners to speak to their vet who will always prioritise their dog s welfare and find the most appropriate treatment plan that meets their situation Dr Malcolm Morley President British Veterinary Association

Obituaries Your tributes If you want to pay tribute to a departed pet or have a suggestion for a lost star dog write to us at the address on page 3 or email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk and put Tribute in the subject line 2006 10 December 2022 End of an era Iska then called Pretty came prancing into my life on 25 September 2011 Her journey started in Ireland Galway where she was relinquished to the SPCA It was Erin Hounds who enabled her to travel to the UK to foster with Alex Meakes She has fostered many sighthounds over the years and I m truly grateful she felt I was a worthy guardian for Iska I was first introduced to her at a fundraiser for Erin Hounds held at the Greyhound Pub in Cheshire At the time I had Pepsi Piglet a pudding Jack Russell Piglet s owner had died leaving her homeless I was struck by Iska s calmness and outward appearance She was a Deerhound Greyhound cross I had rescued a Deerhound as well as a Wolfhound in the past so I knew my sighthounds I was asked if I always went for pretty dogs Ugh no I d say pointing towards Piglet a rotund pudding on legs lying in a toy box I met Alex and we discussed Pretty and that evening I received a call to ask if I would like to adopt her The rest is history She was the most loyal regal gentle knowing laid back non reactive dog She was my constant through the 12 years I had her She lived in harmony with many rescue dogs and cats some visiting She was there to see so many come and go over the rainbow I thought she would always be here she was the matriarch She loved to gallop setting quite a pace That s why I named her Iska which meant the wind in Hausa an African language She was remarkably healthy apart from arthritis in later years affecting her limbs and paws The last couple of years she slowed down due to the discomfort Had she been younger I would have tried stem cell treatment In November 2022 she started with ataxia and was very unstable The medication made it worse Her paws were sore and the weather was against us She had lost muscle mass and was weak I supported her standing in the garden it was heartbreaking Oh to turn back time My heart sank I was losing my precious sweetheart She gave me that look saying I ve had enough now So sadly missed never forgotten never enough time Run free of pain my love till we are reunited sweet Iska Una Clarke 9 February 2017 6 December 2022 Sharon came into our lives on 28 March 2022 a beautiful black Greyhound girl So sweet was her nature that she had settled into the pack within just a few days with Tobi Sophie Layla Teddy Gracie it was like she was meant to be here She was a little shy at first but her cheeky side soon appeared I liken Sharon to a rose bud that came into bloom Doing zoomies in the garden and then running through the home still doing zoomies undoing toys and dog beds everywhere then she d stop and look at me tail wagging fast and furious ears erect and with the biggest smile ever Sharon loved to play peek a boo when I got Teddy and Gracie ready for their walk Sharon would peep into the kitchen and I d pretend to chase her She would scamper in the living room and then only seconds later that cheeky face would come back again This would go on until I was tired out As soon as I retired home Sharon would be there with that trademark smile of hers Sharon was off her food for a couple of days thinking it may be a tummy upset I booked her in for a simple check up But on the day of the vet appointment her breath became laboured all of a sudden It resulted in an emergency dash to the vet s where the vet took her temperature and did X rays It turned out that she had a collapsed lung but the vet couldn t tell me how or why it had happened It was all happening so quickly all I knew was that Sharon s life was ebbing away right in front of me while her eyes pleaded for her struggle to breathe to be eased She was gently put to sleep as I held her in my arms Not once did Sharon cry So brave and beautiful her little face wet with my tears she left silently as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge I could not and still cannot wrap my head around how such a gentle healthy fiveyear old can leave this Earth in such a way Sharon was so cruelly snatched from us far too early I can only hope she was happy for those eight and a half months that we had together Sharon is sorely missed by us all Family friends neighbours Sharon touched the lives of many simply by being herself I m sure the many Campbell canines await her at the Rainbow Bridge to take Sharon into their heavenly pack and hearts and will look after her until we meet again Night night my angel run free do your zoomies in heaven You are such a beautiful soul never to be forgotten All my love always Mummy Lots of love waggy tails licky kisses Global 100 2020 WINNER Confessions of a dogaholic B eing the boss was constantly challenging I couldn t keep doing everything everywhere all at once unless I expanded the team or time itself But if we were to have more people we d need a bigger office I d been lucky A very kind Labrador owning gentleman had offered the magazine a lovely new home We would become West End girls the name of the next village to Chobham just up the road from our Sunningdale shoebox Dick owned Pankhurst Farm which was already populated with a potter an artist a carpenter a blacksmith and even a resident dog groomer Around this time I was made Cosmopolitan Woman of Achievement for saving the magazine from closure Sally and I had a trip to London for the swanky shoot and I stubbornly wore my old red black and blue jacket instead of the designer clothes they d picked out Sally looked gorgeous though Our photo was tucked away near the back in the latest edition of Cosmo but I didn t exactly mix with typical readers so it had largely gone unnoticed Until that is I pulled into the drive of the new offices at Pankhurst Farm I was driving quite slowly luckily so I managed to swerve to avoid the young man in my path He was carrying a copy of Cosmopolitan and gestured for me to wind down my window I ve seen you in the magazine he said excitedly I hear you re moving in MERRY MAN 66 Dogs Today May 2023 Winners 2013 2023 For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST I think I might have blushed Especially when I realised that I hadn t stopped and the poor chap was having to run alongside the car I wasn t used to men running after me He claimed the mag belonged to his mum and he had been excited to hear that a magazine was moving into the farm as he had previously provided some illustrations to Punch Would I like to see his etchings Well long story short yes I did The Guardian had been where I originally saw my role advertised so I turned to them to find more people like me REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR Stops dogs pulling on the lead and gives you back control Life Changing products for you and your dog PRODUCT I CAN T LIVE WITHOUT DO NOT PASS GO Claire Horton Bussey stood out She was just perfect and had overachievement written all over her She even passed her driving test on first attempt on the day before she started Plus she had memorised every single back issue My earlier acquisition I ll call her Xena to protect her identity soon complained that Claire made her look bad To be brutally honest this was one of the few things that Xena didn t need any assistance with I feel mean telling you this story but it still makes me giggle During her lunch break Xena had driven to the petrol station and bought a token for the automatic car wash She was fuming when she returned to the office I put the token in and then a green light with Go came on so I reversed and came back How irritating I ve wasted my money I may have thought the same when writing her salary cheque but I was still learning how to be the boss I assumed she was just a slow learner I should have shown her the go sign much sooner but we d have missed out on many more funny stories if I had P NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT Matching accessories in a selection of colours with high quality workmanship and ttings Also available Collars Non Slip Leads and Gripper Training Leads o ering added security and con dence throughout the winter months Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK I noticed he was rather attractive He looked a bit like Michael Praed who had been Robin of Sherwood on TV I wasn t the only one who saw the resemblance I later discovered that my new friend s nickname had been Kevin of Windlesham the village he came from West End girl Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 UK Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk Endorsed by Dr David Sands BSc PhD CFBA Fellow of the Canine Feline Behaviour Association AWARDED Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 21 UK and Most Innovative Dog Collar Manufacturers 2019
