Words BERNARD BALE Emma Stone might be convincing as the villainous Cruella de Vil in the new 101 Dalmatians movie but she s actually dotty about dogs She de Vil I My Golden Retriever was a rescue dog and the love I got back has just been fantastic 6 Dogs Today June 2021 do love dogs very much said Emma They are so hard to resist They are so cute when they are puppies but I am not one of those people who expect them to stay puppies forever To me it doesn t matter what age they are they are all very special and if you give them the chance they are probably the most loyal friend you will ever have Born in Scottsdale Arizona Emma admits that she had a loving childhood with a few complications I was mostly OK but occasionally had confidence crises spending time with dogs was great therapy she said Going to drama school was also pretty good Dogs give you someone else to think about drama school gives you someone else to be for a while I don t think my social skills were great because panic attacks made me quite insular but dogs and drama brought me out of my shell I wanted to do comedy at the start of getting into theatre but then someone said I had a voice that could be good for musicals I had some training and it all began to take shape I was 11 when I made my stage debut in a production of the lovely Wind in the Willows It is still one of my favourite books Emma was already successful and well known before the movie La La Land launched her into global stardom and into the most famous of all spotlights as she picked up an Oscar It was the film of the year It was a fantastic movie she said I m not going to say it was not hard work because it was incredibly hard work but that is what it takes to have a success on your hands Personally I loved it and I am very grateful for the chance to take part in what has become an iconic movie This month another potentially iconic film is released with Emma starring as the villainous Cruella de Vil I think everyone is going to hate me well hopefully hate Cruella said Emma It follows on from 101 Dalmatians but it is set in the 1970s and of course it does indeed involve Dalmatians It is a bit of a departure for me but it was fun to make and working with Dalmatians was not a problem they are great dogs and probably the most famous breed in the world I found their history as coach dogs really fascinating and they were real professionals to work with Of course they have their own trainers around and it is good to see them looking at their owners for instructions but when the cameras roll they know exactly what is wanted and just get on with it I don t think I could ever be a villainess with dogs around they melt even the coldest of hearts Emma is enthusiastic about her work and dogs and lets us into a little secret STAR BAKER My connections with dogs are not just having them as pets or working with them in movies she revealed In my early acting days I was the same as everyone else hopefully going from audition to audition but in the meantime you have to eat I attended more acting and singing classes but I also had a part time job at a bakery What did we make Dog treats I loved it Everything I helped bake was going to make some dog a happy pooch Now I buy those treats for my own dogs As an international star of stage screen and television Emma could be excused for drifting into her own La La Land but she is determined not to go there I ve got a great family and great people around me that would be able to kick me in the shins if I ever for one minute got lost up in the clouds My parents were really supportive but didn t create any illusions I had to convince them to let me go to Hollywood when I was 15 They told me that I would have to work hard that nothing was going to be handed on a plate and that Hollywood wouldn t just throw its welcoming doors open I ve been lucky to have genuine people around me but I have also had dogs around me and they really don t care how successful I am or what contract I have just signed they just want me to be me and that is all Emma is a champion of rescue dogs and urges people to consider giving a home to one People often seem to think that rescue dogs are homeless because they are trouble she said That is very rarely the case They really are rescue dogs they have been taken from owners who did not appreciate them and look after them properly They deserve something better They may not be puppies but they still deserve a better life My Golden Retriever was a rescue dog and the love I got back has just been fantastic They never take their new home for granted and it is just a great feeling to see them sprawled out and totally relaxed CONNECTING THE DOTS It seems that we are in for a few surprises when Cruella hits our screens We get to see other sides to Cruella said Emma She has her comic moments and I have never lost the urge to play comedy perhaps this will help other comedy roles to come along Men get the best comedy roles but there are some great funny women about too Traditionally Cruella has no love of dogs and when you are as crazy about dogs as I am it makes her a tough character to play but this turned out to be OK So does this mean that the new Cruella is actually a dog lover Well we ll have to find see when the film comes out but rest assured that Emma Stone s dogs are in very good hands P Words BEVERLEY CUDDY The Queen s Speech M aybe this crisis we are living through has reminded us all that the way we treat animals has a consequence Perhaps facing such a huge challenge has made politicians re evaluate what really matters On the menu for the next parliament banning electric shock collars an increase in the minimum age for imported pups to stop international puppy farming action on pet theft microchipping reform and bans on cropped and docked dogs being imported There s also the promise of regulation and licensing for rescue organisations improvements for racing Greyhounds and a brief mention of the Dangerous Dogs Act In May the government announced its Action Plan for Animal Welfare This will be achieved by three new bills The Animal Welfare Sentience Bill the Kept Animals Bill and the Animals Abroad Bill During a visit to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home environment secretary George Eustace 8 Dogs Today June 2021 announced the plan saying Our Action Plan for Animal Welfare will in a series of bills tackle puppy smuggling through changes to import rules introduce compulsory microchipping for cats and crack down on pet theft through a new government taskforce There will also be a series of non legislative changes to promote animal welfare over the coming months with a number of regulations due to be brought forward as early as this year AIMING HIGH The coronavirus pandemic has put a spotlight on animal welfare From the overwhelming support and comfort provided by pets to the importance of a secure food supply chain founded upon high welfare farming high welfare standards have never been more important The way we treat animals reflects our values and the kind of people we are We will continue to raise the bar and we intend to take the rest of the world with us A new expert committee on animal sentience will report on government decisions holding ministers accountable for animal welfare in policy making There will be new higher maximum penalties for animal cruelty and we will introduce a new system of penalty fines for people who harm animals We recognise how important pets are to people s lives and will tackle the trade in puppy smuggling crack down on pet theft and take forward other reforms in this area Responsibility for animal welfare is devolved to the devolved administrations and legislatures in Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland However animal welfare transcends boundaries and there are clear benefits from working collaboratively across the UK to achieve shared aims One of our key reforms here is to end the abhorrent cruel practice of puppy smuggling and low welfare pet imports Now the transition period has finished and we have left the EU we can go further than ever We have been working We will crack down on pet theft which is reported to have increased markedly since the start of the pandemic knowing the devastating impact this offence and the fear of it can have on families and pet owners We have worked across government to set up a taskforce to tackle this issue This taskforce will Gather research and commission work to build a clear evidence base of the scale of any issue Consider the issue from end to end including causes prevention reporting enforcement prosecution and sentencing Make clear and timely recommendations on ways to improve the situation around pet theft We will introduce compulsory cat microchipping to ensure lost or stolen cats can be reunited with their owners as quickly as possible In addition we are reviewing the Photo Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Photo posed by models There was no stammering in this blockbuster In the next parliament we are promised a brave new world for animal welfare Now we ve left Europe could our pets be better off closely with our colleagues across the devolved administrations and non governmental organisations NGOs to provide protection for those animals brought in by these unscrupulous traders and to prevent the trade as much as we can We will legislate to reduce the number of pet dogs cats and ferrets that can be moved under the pet travel rules that apply to noncommercial movements This will prevent unscrupulous traders from exploiting our pet travel rules We will also bring in powers that enable us to go further to Increase the minimum age that dogs can be non commercially moved or commercially imported into Great Britain Restrict the ability of unscrupulous traders to move heavily pregnant dogs into Great Britain both commercially and noncommercially Prioritise the health and welfare of dogs by prohibiting the importation and non commercial movement of dogs into Great Britain that have been subject to low welfare practices such as ear cropping or tail docking in line with our domestic legislation on these practices One of our key reforms here is to end the abhorrent cruel practice of puppy smuggling and low welfare pet imports Now the transition period has finished and we have left the EU we can go further than ever operation of the current microchip database systems which also apply to dogs with a view to introducing improvements We are also considering reforms to provide greater assurance that microchip database information is checked appropriately for example in cases where healthy dogs are presented to vets for euthanasia as campaigned for via the Tuk s Law movement In addition he announced the intention to Continue our initiatives to educate the public on how to source dogs and cats responsibly Launched in March 2020 our National Petfished Communications Campaign aims to raise awareness of issues associated with low welfare and the illegal supply of pets Pursue the licensing of animal sanctuaries rescue and rehoming centres including for cats dogs and horses Ban remote controlled electronic training collars e collars given their scope to harm cats and dogs Consider further protections for racing Greyhounds including further steps to raise welfare standards at trainers kennels Ensure that dangerous dogs legislation continues to provide effective public safety controls P Peter Laurie chief executive of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home said Battersea very much welcomes the new Action Plan for Animal Welfare Every dog and cat deserves to be safe from harm and this means clamping down on those trading animals illegally and in poor welfare conditions being proactive to protect owners from the devastation of having their pet lost or stolen and doing everything we can to reunite them Our pets are not only sentient beings but much loved family members and we support any measures that will protect them from unnecessary suffering and reassure dog and cat owners both now and in the future Chris Sherwood chief executive of the RSPCA said These announcements will make a real and lasting difference to animal welfare so we re pleased the government is committed to improving animals lives in the UK and abroad We can no longer ignore the inextricable link that exists between the way we treat animals our own health and that of the planet but to really achieve a step change it will take courage from right across government We urge the government to put animal welfare at the heart of policy making and make these announcements just the beginning of an evolving holistic animal health and welfare strategy June 2021 Dogs Today 9

very much welcomes the new Action Plan for Animal Welfare Every dog and cat deserves to be safe from harm and this means clamping down on those trading animals illegally and in poor welfare conditions being proactive to protect owners from the devastation of having their pet lost or stolen and doing everything we can to reunite them Our pets are not only sentient beings but much loved family members and we support any measures that will protect them from unnecessary suffering and reassure dog and cat owners both now and in the future Chris Sherwood chief executive of the RSPCA said These announcements will make a real and lasting difference to animal welfare so we re pleased the government is committed to improving animals lives in the UK and abroad We can no longer ignore the inextricable link that exists between the way we treat animals our own health and that of the planet but to really achieve a step change it will take courage from right across government We urge the government to put animal welfare at the heart of policy making and make these announcements just the beginning of an evolving holistic animal health and welfare strategy June 2021 Dogs Today 9

programme team at blooddonor rvc ac uk Stuart Rose with Brooke Barnaby 18 Dogs Today June 2021 had a very high temperature racing heart and was in a lot of pain He was examined had blood tests and with the advice of the duty vet and Simon Hayes I decided to let him go The loss was as sudden as it was devastating Sharon is not new to heartbreak Great Danes often die much too early leaving behind a void It is a void in every sense of the word Sharon says Of course the loss of any dog is painful but with The UK s No 1 vitamins available now for those with 4 legs BARNABY S LEGACY DEADLY RELAPSE Barnaby suffered from GDV in February 2021 but it was quickly treated and he was able to recover On 27 March he was well enough to run off lead in a field We had a lovely time Sharon says as she shares a video of Barnaby galloping across the field There seemed to be nothing wrong with him I had no idea what was about to happen when I took this video it is now one of my favourite memories of Barnaby On the night of 9 April Barnaby suffered a relapse and was rushed to the emergency vet They think he had complications from his last surgery and we made the decision that he wasn t strong enough to undergo more surgery or tests Sharon wrote the next day The whole journey from our house to the practice he was crying and it broke my heart When he arrived he G such a large dog the empty space in your home is so tangible a constant feeling of absence My husband and I love this breed due to the temperament but they don t live long we have been unlucky Brooke is now seven years old and the oldest Great Dane we ve ever had But there truly is no other breed for me I would change them for no other As with all other blood donors who have passed away Barnaby now has a copper leaf with his name on it on the RVC s memorial tree Sharon is keen to visit as soon as the pandemic allows She has also donated Barnaby s body for tissue donation and veterinary science Once the dog is gone the body is only a shell Sharon adds I do hope he could help others in death as he did in life Blood donations One way Sharon is looking to keep Barnaby s legacy alive is by raising awareness of the danger posed by GDV The condition is more common in large or deep chested breeds such as Great Danes Newfoundlands Weimaraners Basset Hounds St Bernards and Irish Setters but it can affect dogs of any size which makes it even more insidious as many pet owners consider it a large breed disease I had no idea it was so prevalent but I was told any breed can have it a vet nurse told me she saw a Yorkshire Terrier who had it Sharon says There is a bit more awareness among owners of giant breeds but I fear there is not as much knowledge about smaller breeds Their owners just don t think it s a danger to their dog and may not be aware of the signs You think of bloat and you think of their stomach swelling but Barnaby s stomach did not swell There are experienced dog owners who may not know what to look out for my own husband did not know the signs which drove the point home to me that there needs to be more awareness about GDV It hurts to talk about Barnaby now but if it saves even just one dog s life it will have been worth it P TM SuperDog takes our 50 years of awardwinning nutritional expertise even further all the innovation and careful effective formulation you d expect from make amazing pets for therapy it is something I want to explore They are so large someone in bed or on a wheelchair can easily reach for them and stroke them Brooke was amazing with my mother who had Alzheimer s she would stroke his head and smile There were still so many things for Barnaby to do Unfortunately Barnaby s life was cut short not long before his fourth birthday by gastric dilatation volvulus GDV a condition commonly known as bloat GDV occurs when an abnormal amount of gas builds up in the stomach and the stomach twists round on itself Once the stomach twists the gas can t escape and pressure builds up which can restrict blood flow affect breathing and lead to shock If not treated quickly the stomach wall can become damaged causing it to bruise start to die away or rupture Barnaby suffered from GDV in February 2021 but it was quickly treated and he was able to recover On 27 March he was well enough to run off lead in a field We had a lovely time Sharon says as she shares a video of Barnaby galloping across the field There seemed to be nothing wrong with him I had no idea what was about to happen when I took this video it is now one of my favourite memories of Barnaby On the night of 9 April Barnaby suffered a relapse and was rushed to the emergency vet They think he had complications from his last surgery and we made the decision that he wasn t strong enough to undergo more surgery or tests Sharon wrote the next day The whole journey from our house to the practice he was crying and it broke my heart When he arrived he G such a large dog the empty space in your home is so tangible a constant feeling of absence My husband and I love this breed due to the temperament but they don t live long we have been unlucky Brooke is now seven years old and the oldest Great Dane we ve ever had But there truly is no other breed for me I would change them for no other As with all other blood donors who have passed away Barnaby now has a copper leaf with his name on it on the RVC s memorial tree Sharon is keen to visit as soon as the pandemic allows She has also donated Barnaby s body for tissue donation and veterinary science Once the dog is gone the body is only a shell Sharon adds I do hope he could help others in death as he did in life Blood donations One way Sharon is looking to keep Barnaby s legacy alive is by raising awareness of the danger posed by GDV The condition is more common in large or deep chested breeds such as Great Danes Newfoundlands Weimaraners Basset Hounds St Bernards and Irish Setters but it can affect dogs of any size which makes it even more insidious as many pet owners consider it a large breed disease I had no idea it was so prevalent but I was told any breed can have it a vet nurse told me she saw a Yorkshire Terrier who had it Sharon says There is a bit more awareness among owners of giant breeds but I fear there is not as much knowledge about smaller breeds Their owners just don t think it s a danger to their dog and may not be aware of the signs You think of bloat and you think of their stomach swelling but Barnaby s stomach did not swell There are experienced dog owners who may not know what to look out for my own husband did not know the signs which drove the point home to me that there needs to be more awareness about GDV It hurts to talk about Barnaby now but if it saves even just one dog s life it will have been worth it P TM SuperDog takes our 50 years of awardwinning nutritional expertise even further all the innovation and careful effective formulation you d expect from supporter of Battersea caring for dogs since 1860 From UK s No 1 Vitamin Company 2021 04 21_ADSPDCONP known as the Blue Boys Barnaby was also a canine blood donor for the Royal Veterinary College RVC blood transfusion service Sharon says He achieved so much in his short life and he could have done so much more I was thinking of making him an assistance dog Great Danes are so soft and gentle they make amazing pets for therapy it is something I want to explore They are so large someone in bed or on a wheelchair can easily reach for them and stroke them Brooke was amazing with my mother who had Alzheimer s she would stroke his head and smile There were still so many things for Barnaby to do Unfortunately Barnaby s life was cut short not long before his fourth birthday by gastric dilatation volvulus GDV a condition commonly known as bloat GDV occurs when an abnormal amount of gas builds up in the stomach and the stomach twists round on itself Once the stomach twists the gas can t escape and pressure builds up which can restrict blood flow affect breathing and lead to shock If not treated quickly the stomach wall can become damaged causing it to bruise start to die away or rupture about their various concerns that there was looming a threat from the deadly germs of disease that had been taking their toll on humanity since the beginning of things Adapted from the first and last paragraphs of the 1897 book War of the Worlds by HG Wells W e humans have always been fascinated by apocalyptic science fiction stories and Hollywood has made fortunes out of them But we never expected it would ever happen to us And then it did Economies closed down schools shut and families were told to stay at home and put their lives on hold The pandemic has had a devastating effect on our mental health and children have been hit particularly hard Young kids have forgotten basic social skills such as toilet training and eating with a knife and fork Older kids have lost their confidence and are anxious about going back to 38 Dogs Today June 2021 The forgotten victims of this pandemic at least as far as the mainstream media is concerned are the 10 million dogs that have been living in lockdown with us school and having to re establish their sometimes complicated social relationships with their peers An NHS England survey reported recently that 20 per cent of 11 to 16 year olds are experiencing clinically significant mental health problems The forgotten victims of this pandemic at least as far as the mainstream media is concerned are the 10 million dogs that have been living in lockdown with us Many of them will be OK with their owners doing what they can to maintain some sense of routine and stability for them For other families through no fault of their own it has not been so easy Many families don t have gardens or green spaces near enough to allow their dogs the freedom to run and sniff and perhaps even socialise with their doggie friends Then there s been the problem of space or lack of it With the kids not being in school boredom frustration and even anger soon sets in when they can t go and play with their friends For the adults too patience and tolerance is worn thin as they worry about their jobs and their futures For some dogs this has led to punishment by their frustrated owners which has only served to make matters worse All this negative energy reflects back on to the dogs in the household For many dogs being at home with their families all day is a really bad thing because it means they rarely get the opportunity to just curl up somewhere quiet to relax and take a nap All of these factors have devastating effects on dogs mental health and emotional wellbeing which can have long lasting consequences just as in humans Then there s the canine Covid19 generation these are the millions of puppies who were born in the pandemic and never got the chance to experience anything like a normal socialisation period They never got the opportunity to go about the important business of learning how to be well adjusted and happy family dogs One source suggests that 60 of these dogs have never been beyond the boundaries of the family home and nearly half of them have never met another dog The canine Covid 19 generation are now teenagers and for many of them things have not turned out too well Some have been handed in to rescue shelters while others have been sold on to other families A number of these dogs have also developed serious behaviour problems and been euthanased as a result STARTING OVER However it s not all bad news We humans are a resilient species and so are our dogs We all know and love the dog domestication story but what is less well known is that it s actually a two way street Dogs have domesticated us too In many ways we are alike and this is especially the case in how our social brains are wired up We bounce off each other emotionally all the time both through the good times and the bad Now here we all are in the spring of 2021 with the real prospect of a way out of this Covid 19 nightmare Like the children mentioned above the transition from a life of lockdown back into normal life is not going to be straightforward for many dogs Charities and canine behaviourists are already warning of a tsunami of behaviour problems and the advice is that owners need to start preparing their dogs and themselves for this now BACK TO SCHOOL This is why the International School for Canine Psychology and Behaviour https theiscp com product helping your dog inthe post covid emotional cognitive science pioneered by the late Jaak Panksepp in the 1990s Panksepp demonstrated that all mammals are endowed with at least seven fundamental emotional systems through which they enjoy complicated and rich emotional lives More recently many cognitive scientists studying dogs have shown just how much emotional symmetry there is between dogs and their humans the domestication legs twitch as if she s running after something Is she dreaming And if she is what is she dreaming about Is she chasing bunnies in a field or tracking prey in the woods Our Chihuahua Jasmine is a dreamer at least we think she is What else could these sleep vocalisations and movements be Most of the time her slumber is peaceful and still but then these little noises and small physical movements happen and it looks like she s responding to something in her dreams If dogs dream do they remember their dreams when they wake up Last night I dreamt I was back in my grandmother s house My grandmother and my parents were there even though my father and grandmother died a long time ago and the house was sold in the late 1990s In the dream my mother told me that she had bought the house back from the new owners so we could keep it in the family I cried with happiness because I love that house I was overjoyed to be with my family and back in the place that meant so much to me when growing up I woke up and immediately felt sad when I realised that I had been dreaming It felt so real What was odd about my dream was that I hadn t thought about my grandmother s house for months Nothing had happened to me the day before that would have invoked those images dreaming of my grandmother s house seemed to have come out of the blue Even though research has found more disoriented when performing normal tasks Because sleep deprivation can cause a build up of stress hormones dogs with sleep disorders may also become more aggressive or develop other behaviour problems In addition a lack of sleep can weaken a dog s immune system increasing the risk of infection Now we know the importance of sleep how much should our dogs be getting Puppies need about 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day while adult dogs need about 12 to 14 hours Larger dogs tend to sleep a bit more than smaller breeds but quantity of sleep depends on a number of factors including breed age health and the amount of exercise dogs receive during the day that some human dreams are associated with what happens to us during the day much of what we dream comes from a collection of stored memories that elicit emotional responses Like dogs we also respond physically and vocally to what we dream This ranges from slight twitching to active sleep walking for some but when we fall asleep and our eyes start to move behind our eyelids our sleep behaviour looks very like that of dogs It takes about 15 minutes after falling asleep before Jasmine s legs start twitching and her eyes move behind her eyelids This eye movement happens in the REM or rapid eye movement phase of sleep when dogs and humans are actively dreaming because we look at dream images as if they are in the real world CHASING DREAMS DREAMLAND In both dogs and humans part of the brain stem called the pons is responsible for paralysing our larger muscles during sleep which keeps most of us from acting out our dreams The pons is underdeveloped in puppies and may not work as efficiently in elderly dogs Like humans some dogs can sleep walk becoming physically active during sleep They may attack an inanimate object or physically get up and run into things but fortunately this REM behaviour disorder is very rare In 1997 researchers Lucas Powell and Murphee recorded the electrical activity of the brains of six Pointer dogs for 24 hours They found that the dogs spent 44 per cent of their time alert 21 per cent in a state of drowsiness 23 per cent in the deepest stage of non REM or slow wave sleep and 12 per cent in REM sleep People tend to dream in REM and non REM sleep but the former produces much more intense and bizarre dreams that often occur before a person wakes That is why we sometimes remember our dreams for a period of time after we wake In my last article I wrote about memory and how we can help dogs retain the information they learn In 2019 scientists discovered what they called forgetting neurons These neurons are most active at night because sleep is the time when the brain reorganises itself and prepares for the next day of information That is why getting a good night s sleep is so important because during sleep the body consolidates and transfers short term memories into long term ones This transfer can be inhibited by lack of sleep LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE Because we know that sleep reorganises the brain it s very important that dogs get enough of it Dogs with sleep disorders might whine cry or frequently wake up during the night become more sluggish during the day or seem Working dogs tend to get less sleep because of the jobs they are required to do while companion dogs that are less active might sleep more during the day Senior dogs tend to revert back to puppy hours and take more naps during the day becoming more wakeful at night It s important to ensure that dogs of all ages get the appropriate amount of enrichment during the day so they have more quality sleep at night Jasmine is sleeping next to me as I write this She has been very still while I ve been typing but now her body has started twitching and her mouth and nose are quivering I stop typing to watch her and notice that her eyes are slightly open Her body starts to quiver and it appears she has come to a particularly active part of her dream She is an elderly dog now and has the beginnings of arthritis in her knees so her days of chasing squirrels are pretty much over but as I watch her I hope that at least in her dreams she is running fast and chasing all the squirrels she wants P June Safari adventures by Andrew Rae Rae Safaris Johannesburg Of all the creatures you might look for on safari few would list the golden wolf but it is one of the continent s great gems I outskirts of urban areas and the side striped jackal Canis adustus a less common denizen of certain parts of the neotropical east and south east of southern Africa Here was a canid I had only seen in books The largest of Africa s jackals they were stunningly beautiful A magnificent emulsion of grizzled grey and yellow golden fur and oozing with canine character There was a pair foraging in the damp savannah grass for rodents and ground birds such as the ever darting francolin and button quail Golden wolf Photo Pierre Duval remember the day I first laid eyes on Canis lupaster I was in East Africa northern Tanzania to be more specific and we were on what is arguably Africa s most quintessentially iconic safari Tanzania s Northern Circuit features the country s magnificent lakes rift valley escarpment the endless plains of the Serengeti replete with famous wildebeest migration and the astonishing diabolical lost world of the Ngorongoro crater We were nearing the end of the safari and had descended into the sunken volcano caldera of Ngorongoro a breathtaking savanna ecosystem trapped by geological upheaval It was here among the legions of wildebeest and zebra the herds of elephant living alongside grazing Maasai cattle the plethora of carnivores including lion spotted hyena and a rather nervous serval that I first saw an African golden wolf Back then they were still regarded by science as the African race of the golden jackal As a native son of South Africa my jackal experience at that stage was limited to two species the ubiquitous black backed jackal Canis mesomelas widespread across the sub continent and often seen on farmland and the WOLF MIX In 2015 thanks to a battery of mitochondrial DNA and nuclear genome analyses this fantastic African canid was reclassified What was once believed to be an African race of the Asiatic golden jackal Canis aureus is in fact a descendant of the genetic admixture of grey wolf Canis lupus and the Ethiopian wolf Canis simensis They are still however similar enough to the Asiatic golden jackal that hybrid offspring can also occur as discovered through genetic tests on jackals in Israel The golden wolf is widespread Golden wolf Photo Peter Neville 52 Dogs Today June 2021 across North and West Africa the Sahel region the Horn of Africa and the northern part of East Africa in Kenya and northern Tanzania primarily It has been found as high as 1800m above sea level in the Atlas Mountains and along the coast in Eritrea The golden wolf is primarily a carnivore and consumes both invertebrate and vertebrate prey from rodents and birds to the offspring of gazelle and even larger ungulates They will also readily feed on carrion and sometimes eat certain fruits and berries when in season They tend to be more diurnal than Africa s other jackals and they favour more open grassland country The theory here is that diurnal activity helps the species avoid conflict with larger apex carnivores such as the more crepuscular dawn and dusk or nocturnal big cats and spotted hyena Cheetah employ a similar strategy The basic social unit is a mating pair who are actively territorial Territory size varies from two to four square kilometres on the Serengeti to much larger in more arid landscapes like the Sahel or the Danakil Depression Territory size is directly proportional to the availability of resources There is less aggression between the territorial pair and its adult offspring than in black backed jackal for example FAMILY TIES While the golden wolf will suppress any sexual and territorial behaviour it will not actively drive away its newly independent offspring as they enter adulthood This comparative tolerance allows for a pack social structure to develop in regions with abundant resources such as on some outskirts of human habitation Courtship rituals are comparatively lengthy with the breeding pair remaining almost constantly together Prior to mating the pair will patrol and mark territory and copulation is preceded by the female holding her tail out and to the side in such a way that her genitalia are exposed The two then approach each other whimpering lifting their tails and bristling their fur displaying varying levels of apparently offensive and defensive behaviour The female sniffs and licks the male s genitals while the male nuzzles the female s fur They may circle each other and even fight briefly The copulatory tie lasts around four to five minutes Towards the end of oestrus the pair drifts apart with the female often approaching the male in a more submissive manner In anticipation of the part he will play in raising the pups the male regurgitates or surrenders any food he has to the female In the Serengeti pups are born in December and January and begin eating solid food after about a month Pups are completely weaned at four months of age At this stage the pups are semiindependent venturing up to 50 metres from the den even sleeping in the open Their play behaviour becomes increasingly more aggressive as they establish themselves within the litter The female feeds the pups more frequently than the male The African golden wolf s life centres around a home burrow which usually consists of an abandoned and modified aardvark or warthog excavation The interior structure of this burrow is poorly understood though it is thought to consist of a single central chamber with two or three escape routes The burrow can be found in secluded areas or surprisingly near the dens of other carnivores such as hyenas This incredible canid plays a large role in African human history and folklore Although not commonly found in cave art the African golden wolf is believed to form the template for many of the Ancient Egyptian deities
