Dear readers Beverley Cuddy 4 Dogs Today July 2022 Illustration by Beverley Cuddy A s I am lucky to be alive I have the urge to make the most of every day What shall we sort out first In microchipping month I saw a press release that said one in three chipped dogs don t have any owner s details on any of the databases What a mess When mandatory chipping was first debated the MPs worried about the cost of getting a dog chipped so the big charities offered to do it for free I don t think anyone predicted that a far greater expense was keeping those records up to date I ve heard of homeless dog owners being charged 15 a time to update their phone number Some companies try to make things more affordable with an annual or lifetime fee but very many owners long ago lost the bit of paper telling which database has their records The four original databases became 19 including one that isn t Defra approved Is the government keeping a good enough eye on all these databases Is our data safe Are some allowing people to overwrite records without checking to see if the dog is missing or stolen Well this doesn t seem to have been a priority The bar was set very low for new databases Some are sole traders some aren t ICO registered And now we have GDPR should databases even be allowed to profit from updating our data It was originally the intention that breeders details would also be recorded that all pups would be chipped to the breeder before they left home But the recent government review revealed that 77 of pups were not chipped before they left their breeder Did we really need yet another pet database I was surprised The latest one is refreshingly different It is a free service forever And they aren t even selling anyone chips You can register free with any ISOcompliant chip If you like what they offer they will transfer your records free of charge This new database has partnered with the wonderful DogLost which is a genius move Should anyone anywhere input your dog s microchip number you ll instantly get an email telling you It sounded too good to be true so I decided to try it out I dug out Betty and Honey s chip numbers and it was so easy The checking software revealed they were with two different databases and both were automatically emailed when I ticked the box I got a blind copy so I knew what had been said It didn t cost a penny to transfer And now I can log in and change a phone number or address whenever I need to and I spotted you could register free of charge for loads of perks too offering chunky discounts on things we do use I got a message from DoodleAid saying delays dealing with chip companies has caused its rescue huge problems I suggested they try out this new one They thought they already had they all have such similar names But their Trust Pilot Review revealed what a very different thankfully positive experience they had This made me decide to roll up my sleeves and get more involved DogLost co uk will have more on their website soon in the meantime it s PetDatabase com if you want to try them out too P Betty is very honoured to be included in Nikki Attree s new book Dog Endz A Collection of Wooftastic Cartoons Check out Amazon to get hold of your copy
