Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI With two important petitions on dog welfare to be debated at Westminster Hall we knew Monday 7 June had the potential to be an important day for British pets but all our expectations were surpassed A month to remember O n the afternoon of Monday 7 June parliament debated three animal welfare e petitions The first concerned a ban on the import of shark fins to the UK the other two were all about dogs and while we do love sharks here at Dogs Today they were the ones we were most eager to see discussed Both petitions related to the import of dogs to the UK one called for a ban on the exploitative import of young puppies for sale the many puppies smuggled in the UK after being bred on puppy farms and the other for a ban on the import of dogs with cropped ears Our readers will know that Dogs Today has supported both from the start hence our particular eagerness to see them discussed in parliament It was heartening to see that all petitions had broad support across party lines but we have learned the hard way that generic support means very little without a concrete plan to take action against the issues raised In what has become a British version of Groundhog Day year after year we see MPs discussing yet another petition calling for limits to be placed on the sale of fireworks to the public At each debate we are told by multiple MPs that they too have dogs they love very much and that they understand their plight but no action is ultimately taken to make fireworks season more bearable for our pets However this time was different When Sir David Amess Conservative MP for Southend West began his speech our ears pricked up although not necessarily for the right reasons at first We heard in the opening speech about a puppy that was just four months old and died after being transported from the Soviet Union to the United Kingdom Sir David Amess said making us briefly wonder what year we were in However this geo political slip was quickly forgotten when he made a brief mention of further bills the government is planning to introduce including the Kept Animals Bill AMBITIOUS BILL Its name did not ring a bell and we were left guessing what this bill may entail but not for long The Animal Welfare Kept Animals Bill was announced the next day and we were pleasantly surprised to see that this bill is indeed aiming to set a high bar It follows the government s decision to recognise animals as sentient beings in law through the Animal Welfare Sentience Bill The Animal Welfare Kept Animals Bill aims to Petitions discussed on 7 June Flop Not Crop Ban Puppy Imports While ear cropping is illegal in the UK as well as in most of Europe importing cropped dogs is not This means that the procedure can still be carried out in countries that allow it or illegally in the UK behind the smokescreen of legal imports The petition called for a ban on the import of cropped dogs in the UK in order to close this loophole Owners and breeders can send their puppies abroad to be cropped and then return them to the UK only to claim that the dog is a legal import the petition reads This not only involves transporting a puppy that is too young for travel but it also means that if the cropping is done in a country where cropping is also illegal the enforcement agencies in that country are not able to bring any prosecutions as the evidence the cropped puppy has left their jurisdiction The second issue is that the ability to import cropped dogs has also been relied upon by procroppers to hide a very dark back street practice where breeders or owners are undertaking illegal DIY cropping quite frequently with no medical knowledge or training rudimentary equipment no anaesthetic and no post operative pain relief for the dogs With just over 128 000 signatures the petition against the cruel puppy trade reads Transporting young pups long distances is often stressful before being sold for ridiculous prices to unsuspecting dog lovers Government must adjust current laws ban this unethical activity on welfare grounds and protect these poor animals as soon as possible The campaign called for the minimum age for puppies imported into the UK to be raised to six months The current minimum age 15 weeks is designed so that pups can come in three weeks after receiving their rabies shot Charity Dogs Trust has argued for years that an extension of that waiting time as well as visual checks at the border would strike at the heart of the puppy trade Not only is it far easier to spot the difference between an underage puppy and a six month old one thus increasing the likelihood of illegal pups being seized at the border but it would also make smuggling far less lucrative the demand for older puppies is non existent compared to that of younger ones 14 Dogs Today July 2021 July 2021 Dogs Today 15

Yasmine Tinkerbelle Words photos CLARE ANDRUSYK Cocker two morning I collected some puppy colostrum and started to bottle feed her twice a day alongside feeds from Lady It was clear that Tinkerbell would struggle to survive alongside 10 other puppies that were triple her size with only nine nipples to go around For the next week every hour was spent ensuring she was fed and gaining weight In eight days she increased from 70g to 148g her sister 121g to 282g Miraculously they both survived and thrived even though the odds were against them Yasmine and Tinkerbell are both black sable both with white markings on their face and paws As well as being very similar in looks they also share the same courageous confident personality We intend to get them DNA tested to see if they are genetically identical and would love them to be documented in history P Identical twins from one egg cell are very rare in dog litters but one lucky breeder captured the entire birth on camera M y show Cocker Spaniel Lady was due her first litter We had scanned for six puppies She wasn t huge and was bounding about full of energy on the day she whelped You would never know that she was actually carrying 11 puppies I have had quite a few experiences in my 22 years of breeding but never one like this The first two puppies were born as normal The next delivery was a double birth both male they came out together but were not attached at the umbilical cord During the whelp I recorded videos of the whole experience for a course I am writing I had my camera set up perfectly just as the perineal bulge started to show Lady was aiming straight towards the camera perfectly angled so I waited in anticipation as she contracted with ease The puppy was breech presentation but she was not struggling and I didn t need to assist Suddenly with an almighty push not one but two puppies appeared again It quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary birth The puppies were attached closely at the umbilical cord giving only around three inches of separation between them I detached them from each other as any knowledgeable breeder would not allowing Lady to struggle and risk one of them getting injured 20 Dogs Today July 2021 Twins attached at the placenta are due to one egg splitting and forming two embryos The egg was fertilised by one sperm cell This is an incredibly rare occurrence in the canine world The first of the female twins born was painfully thin you could see her skeleton My heart dropped into my stomach it s every breeder s fear She weighed only 70g and her sister was 121g Both small compared to the others previously born and to the next five puppies that were delivered after them FAITH TRUST AND PIXIE DUST I stared at the tiny skinny puppy in my palm and gave her some puppy stim drops for an energy boost She was the size of a gerbil and I feared she wouldn t survive She wasn t quite formed in the way the others were and had a rather large head We named the little girl Tinkerbell as she was like a tiny fairy and her sister we called Yasmine I quickly latched the girls on to Lady watching to make sure she didn t reject them and that they weren t being thrown off by the bigger pups The rest of Lady s whelping went excellently I slept next to them and set my alarm for every 90 minutes getting little Tinkerbell on the biggest nipple The next Clare Andrusyk is owner of the Puppy Master Canine Training and Behaviour School and a licensed home breeder July 2021 Dogs Today 21

always take my puppy home at 12 weeks it makes such a difference to the puppy s future Should puppies stay with their mum and littermates longer than eight weeks Jessica Griffiths If mum s lost interest and you have a litter of puppies where one is getting the brunt of a pushier dog s behaviour then I don t think it s fair or ethical to leave the more sensitive pup in this situation I would expect the breeder s understanding of behaviour and socialising as well as the pups environment and breed would all play a part in the decision Most of our pups came to us at eight weeks and they were well adjusted one we had from a breeder at five months and he definitely wasn t well adjusted We had one at 11 weeks and really didn t see a lot of benefit Patsy Hopewell Yes it makes for a more stable dog It gives them confidence and teaches them to behave To me homing a puppy too early is like weaning a one week old human baby Just plain wrong Sonia Penny One of the reasons to have your puppy early is that at seven weeks they look to form a bond with another person If the puppies form a bond in a pack then moving later is much harder for the pup as it has lost its pack So seven eight weeks is the ideal time However the person having the pup must be experienced at home and have the patience to teach the pup and be a companion for several weeks Chelle Owen It really depends on what work the breeder is putting in Some schools of thought say seven weeks What about the mum in all this Worn out bitches probably want a rest In this climate of indiscriminate breeding and feckless owners handover is the least of priorities Julie Moakes Yes so the mum can teach them how to play and be confident Christine Walter Eight weeks is good mum needs a break by then 22 Dogs Today July 2021 email enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk 100 words Annette Courtney I think they should be out bonding learning and with their families at eight weeks If socialisation is done by the breeder correctly and the owners are taught properly to care for these puppies then they will benefit from going out at eight weeks The charities have done heaps of research on this and take their puppies at eight weeks Sophie Agrell My mum didn t let her Pug puppies go to their new homes until 10 12 weeks The pups had had their first inoculations at least and were far more confident and ready to make a new start than they were at eight weeks They were further on with housetraining and were ready to start basic lead training in the garden too Coll Ferguson What about the socialisation window that stops at 16 weeks The longer they stay with the mother the fewer chances to see the real world and they could become more fearful No way do we need any more reactive dogs there are already too many around now Pam Dee We ve always had pups from the breeder at eight weeks though I know most will make inexperienced owners wait until 10 or 12 weeks However with our first Newfoundland pup we had to leave her with the breeder until she was 14 weeks because we had a flood at home and builders everywhere Of the four Newfies we ve had this one was the easiest to train easiest to socialise and really good at occupying herself with a toy when required I have no idea how much of this was down to being with mum and some of the other pups for longer but I d be happy to wait if it s for the good of the pups Shelley Tomsett I used to let pups go at eight weeks but now do the Nobivac 10 week protocol for vaccinations so my pups are often nearer 11 weeks before they leave They are more confident and easily housetrained used to the outdoors and to weather changes so it is not such a shock to their systems These are Miniature Wire haired Dachshunds but I used to breed Bullmastiffs and gundogs and they were easily happy to leave at eight weeks Jo Allen It depends on where they are going and who they will be living with If you already have a dog who is a relative to the pup then it may be easier for them If you are a first time dog owner then maybe you should give the puppy a bit longer with mum Jenna Newell We had litters of puppies the one I kept did amazing as it stayed with mum longer to learn all of the basics Fay McCormick It depends on the puppy some can leave at eight weeks and some need to stay a little longer Either way never before eight weeks Melissa Chesney For me 10 weeks is ideal as my youngest dog was that age when I got him His breeder owned both the dam and the sire and felt it was best for the puppies to leave at 10 weeks instead of eight My dog is the most well rounded of all the dogs I ve owned he definitely benefited from staying with his parents longer I would always get a puppy at 10 weeks instead of eight now Rachel Cooper In my breed eight weeks is ideal In a litter especially a big one the pups are crying out for personal attention and new homes from seven weeks which gives the maximum chance in that important stage for socialisation In the breed we had before 10 12 weeks would be better as the puppies were slower to develop We do lots of stimulation and socialisation with our litters but Spanish Water Dogs are ready for one to one work tummy issues but we soon got that sorted with the right diet You aged like a country gentleman but an MRI found out you had a mass in your liver and also degenerative disc disease which made you slightly incontinent The prospect of spinal surgery for so many disc issues wasn t an option due to your advanced years aged 13 We kept you comfortable and happy with a good quality of life In August 2020 you collapsed at home and we rushed you to the vet hospital with a bowel bleed They said you were in intensive care and were not likely to make it A week later you came home my brave fighter You were not ready to go In February 2021 you started to lose weight After a scan they were 95 per cent sure it was a tumour Palliative care and painkillers were the only option Your belly started to swell with fluid and you were finding things more difficult but you continued with your daily schedule not letting up typical stubborn Weim We were advised by the vet that although you were still eating and walking we had to let you go with dignity and respect before things got where you couldn t enjoy your life We went for a family walk you had a chicken dinner played with your stuffed Kong and laid with your sister Maisie and whilst at home in my arms and held close to my heart you left peacefully for the rainbow bridge Our last gift of love to you was to let you go with peace and chocolate Labrador called Monty We thought he would be pleased to have a companion but he didn t take to the bouncy noisy and playful puppy Who was this intruder that had invaded his space biting his ears and trying to play with him all the time She was so noisy you could positively see him putting his paws over his ears Eventually they became great friends and it was sweet to watch how they looked out for each other Our other family pet Sooty a black and white cat was also a little wary of the newcomer Initially Sooty kept his distance but another firm friendship was struck up Sooty even allowed Annie to wash her with her long pink tongue holding on to one of her ears and tugging on it if Annie got too enthusiastic Sooty would often accompany us on dog walks playfully tormenting Annie by climbing trees a skill Annie found she didn t possess As a youngster Annie found she could jump up put her paws on door handles and open doors We had to make sure we kept our back door locked or she would take herself off for a walk terrorising the neighbourhood cats Annie loved going for walks but as she got older she developed problems with her joints particularly her front legs so this made walks much shorter and coffee breaks much longer She loved attention and fuss We would often have our coffee at Basil and Blue in Chobham Annie adored going there and the staff were always kind enough to give her biscuits Even at Basil and Blue she liked to be the centre of attention On arrival we would position her close by our seats but she would always move into the middle of the area making sure people would notice her and give her some love a terrible trip hazard You could certainly win her over with a treat a typical Labrador I should mention her favourite food was sausages for which she couldn t contain her excitement As family members left home and continued with their own lives Annie had many doggie cousins First there was Summer a black Labrador which Annie probably had the same attitude to as Monty had to her arrival But Summer persisted and gently gently they became great buddies This paved the way for the arrival of Cockapoo Selkie Labrador Margot and little Gustav a Corgi Towards the end of her days a walk to a destination was often enough and she would just sit down We decided to invest in a pull along trolley the sort that you might take to festivals This meant we could take her on longer walks and we even managed to get her to a lake a few times where she could have a swim another favourite pastime We adored our legend Annie and our family and friends are all so sad that she passed away on Tuesday 18 May She died at home surrounded with love Sue Arnett July 2021 Dogs Today 33

Dogs Train Your Dog Positively and It s Me or the Dog 48 Dogs Today July 2021 I t is such a joy to see dogs in the White House again Champ and Major joined President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in their new home about a week after they moved in Overnight the two German Shepherds became the most famous and most photographed dogs in the world As I watched the dogs walk into their new home for the first time I tried to ignore the little voice in my head that told me all would not be well This wasn t because Major was a rescue dog or that both dogs were German Shepherds I just knew that the attention they would receive in this new environment would be overwhelming for any dog It wasn t long before news broke that an incident had occurred between Major and a new member of the president s Secret Service team Major had been startled and lunged towards the man as a result making contact with him but not inflicting serious injury The details were patchy to say the least but the incident was serious enough that both dogs were quickly relocated back to the Bidens home in Delaware until more effective measures could be put in place I do not know what kind of training Major has received since the Bidens adopted him or who their trainer is but after the incident occurred I got many calls from people encouraging me to contact the White House and offer my services People were worried about the type of trainer the Bidens might employ to deal with the situation Everyone and their brother seemed to be offering to train the First Dogs This high profile incident shines a light on the importance of a good transition protocol A protocol might sound restrictive and laborious but tackling every potential avenue and preventing incidents from happening right from the start sets dogs up for success Moving home or transitioning dogs into new environments does not have to be difficult or time consuming as long as everything is put in place before the transition begins The more seamless the change the better the result But back to Major and Champ I have never been in the White House but as I understand it the dogs were housed in the residence and allowed to wander around the offices in the West Wing under supervision including the Oval Office There had been reports from White House staff that Major had charged and barked at them on a number of occasions but quickly calmed down and made friends with them once he realised they were no threat to him MOVING PAINS This behaviour though seemingly meaningless to many rang alarm bells in the dog training community If Major s specific needs were taken into account and his behaviour had been taken seriously from the start he would never have been in a position where he felt the need to charge towards anyone and the biting incident would likely never have happened I regularly advise clients on how to reduce the impact of a home move or other change of situation on their dogs beginning each consultation by taking a full behavioural and medical history Having got a better idea of each dog s personality and background I then look at the layout of the new environment taking into account what it might look like from each dog s point of view Where will the dogs spend most of their time and where will they be housed when unsupervised What time of the day will they be exercised what kind of exercise will they get and Jill Biden with Major left and Champ Victoria Stilwell is a world renowned dog trainer best known as the creator and host of the international hit TV series It s Me or the Dog as well as Greatest knowledge with each dog s individual needs helps them acclimatise faster to their new space Having got a clearer picture of where the dogs will be housed I can then create a daily schedule that includes what happens at night Where will the dogs sleep and what time do they normally wake up Are they used to being disturbed at night and how can their sleep environment be set up for maximum comfort Lack of sleep can make dogs irritable and moody so measuring the quality and quantity of sleep is important Once I have a good picture of the dogs environment I can develop a schedule that incorporates meals exercise enrichment naps and other discharging activities such as chew time which helps relieve stress These activities are then woven into a predictable schedule that should be followed daily Dogs that are nervous and overwhelmed usually do not like surprises and thrive in predictable environments something that is particularly valuable for dogs like Major MAJOR CONFLICT The hardest part about creating a protocol is encouraging families to follow it Environmental management is only protective as long as the human end of the leash follows the rules Again as laborious as it might seem this protocol should integrate easily into daily life It incorporates important factors such as where the dogs can go and what spaces are off limits who they can greet and who they should avoid Most of all management gives dogs a sense of safety and provides more confidence that no sudden surprises will occur Having addressed all the different components I turn my attention to the dogs themselves Major s behaviour suggests that he s experiencing some conflict but this information only comes from what has been reported and what the Bidens have said in interviews To stop any further incidents from happening it s important to understand Major s emotional experience and give him the skills he needs to cope with the changing environment Rather than putting more pressure on him by overwhelming him with too much new information the focus has to be on building his confidence by understanding and fulfilling his particular needs UNFORTUNATE RELAPSE Helping dogs like Major to be successful in new environments depends on understanding why dogs react in certain circumstances and giving them and their caretakers the tools and skills they need to feel more comfortable Environmental management thinking ahead and ensuring that caregivers are compliant will help that success Failure to give dogs a sense of safety will lead to more negative behaviour in the future As I write this article Major and Champ have returned to the White House after receiving some muchneeded training Unfortunately a week after they returned Major nipped another person while he was being walked My heart sank as I heard the news because even though I know there are many effective solutions to this problem I do not have faith that the Bidens will be given the right kind of information The weight of Major s success does indeed fall firmly on the shoulders of his caregivers but also with the people they employ Time will tell P July 2021 Dogs Today 49

Safari adventures by Andrew Rae Rae Safaris Johannesburg Foxes are commonplace in the UK in town and country but they are rarely seen in Africa However like their European canid cousins the enigmatic bat eared fox is able to survive and thrive in even the most inhospitable environment T be found here as well and a few canids the most notable of which is the black backed jackal I recall my first visit to what was then referred to as the Kalahari I was a child and my sister and I together with my parents were on a holiday of wildlife viewing in this unbelievable wilderness I d never seen such beauty I vividly recall bronze infused red sand dunes glowing in the filtered dawn light dusty and ethereal herds of desert antelope the dry riverbeds and clouds of desert dwelling birds including the sandgrouse and redheaded finch WHAT BIG EARS YOU HAVE I will not easily forget my first Kalahari lion Blonde maned and simply magnificent he seemed to float across a dune a ship of rippling muscle oozing defiance There were the amazing meerkats too with their upright sentinels and some odd looking rodents such as Brant s whistling rat and there were foxes Now you will have to excuse us Africans here foxes are not prominent components of our natural landscapes the way they seem to be in the northern Photo Pierre Duval 52 Dogs Today July 2021 hemisphere Foxes are unusual and rarely seen and we get quite excited when we lay eyes on them Southern Africa has two quite diminutive fox species the cape fox and the enigmatic bat eared fox I will always remember that day in the Kgalagadi We had stopped at a waterhole to watch the desert wildlife comings and goings There was a lone oryx bull languidly brushing the flies away with his horse like tail squadrons of sandgrouse angling in on pinioned wings looking for water and several springbok dozing in the shade of a single camelthorn tree And then suddenly four small round hunchbacked grey grizzled big eared apparitions trotted daintily out of the shimmering desert mirage foraging as they stepped I picked up the binoculars and beheld my very first bat eared fox I was absolutely elated A tiny canid of grey and buff fur darker legs and paws a slightly pointed face and stunning dark eyes The huge ears specially adapted to assist with thermoregulation and finding food were out of all proportion to the face like twin satellite dishes and resembling those of a slit faced or long eared bat which is probably why they are named as such The bat eared fox is the only member of the genus Otocyon and its full scientific name is Otocyon megalotis Otocyon is derived from the Greek words otus for ear and cyon for dog while the specific species name megalotis comes from the Greek words mega for large and otus for ear There are currently two recognised sub species O megalotis megalotis in southern Africa and O megalotis virgatus in east Africa They are considered the only truly insectivorous canids on earth Eighty per cent of their diet often consists of just one species of harvester termite Photo Leon Marais here is a great swathe of desiccated country that dominates the central part of southern Africa It is further separated into various regions based on the geology and botany that prevails there It is all desert or semi desert and the specific portions are all evocatively named the Karoo Namaqualand the Kgalagadi among others The Kgalagadi is an enormous surreal dune scape a vast thirst land spread across three countries South Africa Namibia and Botswana It is impossibly arid and yet supports an unlikely and impressive diversity of nichespecialised inhabitants There are the large and obvious denizens the ungainly giraffe the imposing oryx also called gemsbok the brindled gnu or wildebeest the desert gazelle known as the springbok and the normally ponderous red hartebeest which is very fast indeed when required to run There are the large greater kudu and massive eland too in areas where surface water is available and the apex carnivores the lion brown hyena leopard and cheetah Smaller felids like the African wildcat and caracal are to Hodotermes mossambicus Interestingly the snouted harvester termite is avoided as the fox does not have a tolerance for this termite s chemical defences perhaps it is still evolving a counter counter measure They also consume other arthropods such scorpions spiders beetles ants grasshoppers moths and millipedes as well as fungi seeds and wild berries Small mammals reptiles and birds are only rarely taken The bat eared fox has unique dentition which has adapted to a largely insectivorous diet The teeth are a lot smaller than other canids and the tooth surfaces used for shearing are greatly reduced It also exhibits an unusual protrusion on the lower jaw known as a subangular process which anchors the large digastric muscle allowing for rapid chewing A bat eared fox can open and close its jaws five times per second which is helpful if you are trying to subdue and ingest wriggling scorpions and the like These foxes are small canids weighing between 3 5 5kg and measuring a mere 30 40cm at the shoulder They are primarily nocturnal in east Africa but prefer to be diurnal in winter in southern Africa and nocturnal only in summer They are monogamous and highly social mixing freely with other groups particularly at sites where there is a high concentration of food Gestation is between 60 and 70 days and the young are born between September and November in the Kgalagadi region Litter sizes range from one to six kits INSECT CONTROL The adult male takes over as the main care giver after primary lactation is over around 15 weeks allowing the female to forage again thus keeping up her condition and ability to lactate The male actively defends grooms and chaperones the kits and moves them between den sites during this period both for protection and to challenge them as they develop their muscular coordination in moving around and negotiating more complex terrain The young foxes disperse five to six months after birth and are sexually mature at about nine months of age Bat eared foxes are not threatened in terms of conservation status Population numbers are strong and unlike other wild African canids they are not considered a threat to livestock by farmers and herders In fact they are valued as they control termite numbers which are considered a pest by farming communities I have seen these fantastic little foxes on many occasions since that first auspicious day in the desert all those years ago I have seen them in the sandstone strewn landscapes of Tuli in north eastern Botswana and in the psychedelic neon orange flower garlands of Namaqualand in early spring when the desert blooms and in the arid hill country and grasslands of the Great Karoo They are as much a part of the great dusty thirsty interior of the African subcontinent as the springbok and the quiver tree the Pentzia bush or the stark camelthorn I last saw bat eared foxes while sitting on a rocky ridge overlooking the Fish River in the Karoo heartland July 2021 Dogs Today 53

oozing defiance There were the amazing meerkats too with their upright sentinels and some odd looking rodents such as Brant s whistling rat and there were foxes Now you will have to excuse us Africans here foxes are not prominent components of our natural landscapes the way they seem to be in the northern Photo Pierre Duval 52 Dogs Today July 2021 hemisphere Foxes are unusual and rarely seen and we get quite excited when we lay eyes on them Southern Africa has two quite diminutive fox species the cape fox and the enigmatic bat eared fox I will always remember that day in the Kgalagadi We had stopped at a waterhole to watch the desert wildlife comings and goings There was a lone oryx bull languidly brushing the flies away with his horse like tail squadrons of sandgrouse angling in on pinioned wings looking for water and several springbok dozing in the shade of a single camelthorn tree And then suddenly four small round hunchbacked grey grizzled big eared apparitions trotted daintily out of the shimmering desert mirage foraging as they stepped I picked up the binoculars and beheld my very first bat eared fox I was absolutely elated A tiny canid of grey and buff fur darker legs and paws a slightly pointed face and stunning dark eyes The huge ears specially adapted to assist with thermoregulation and finding food were out of all proportion to the face like twin satellite dishes and resembling those of a slit faced or long eared bat which is probably why they are named as such The bat eared fox is the only member of the genus Otocyon and its full scientific name is Otocyon megalotis Otocyon is derived from the Greek words otus for ear and cyon for dog while the specific species name megalotis comes from the Greek words mega for large and otus for ear There are currently two recognised sub species O megalotis megalotis in southern Africa and O megalotis virgatus in east Africa They are considered the only truly insectivorous canids on earth Eighty per cent of their diet often consists of just one species of harvester termite Photo Leon Marais here is a great swathe of desiccated country that dominates the central part of southern Africa It is further separated into various regions based on the geology and botany that prevails there It is all desert or semi desert and the specific portions are all evocatively named the Karoo Namaqualand the Kgalagadi among others The Kgalagadi is an enormous surreal dune scape a vast thirst land spread across three countries South Africa Namibia and Botswana It is impossibly arid and yet supports an unlikely and impressive diversity of nichespecialised inhabitants There are the large and obvious denizens the ungainly giraffe the imposing oryx also called gemsbok the brindled gnu or wildebeest the desert gazelle known as the springbok and the normally ponderous red hartebeest which is very fast indeed when required to run There are the large greater kudu and massive eland too in areas where surface water is available and the apex carnivores the lion brown hyena leopard and cheetah Smaller felids like the African wildcat and caracal are to Hodotermes mossambicus Interestingly the snouted harvester termite is avoided as the fox does not have a tolerance for this termite s chemical defences perhaps it is still evolving a counter counter measure They also consume other arthropods such scorpions spiders beetles ants grasshoppers moths and millipedes as well as fungi seeds and wild berries Small mammals reptiles and birds are only rarely taken The bat eared fox has unique dentition which has adapted to a largely insectivorous diet The teeth are a lot smaller than other canids and the tooth surfaces used for shearing are greatly reduced It also exhibits an unusual protrusion on the lower jaw known as a subangular process which anchors the large digastric muscle allowing for rapid chewing A bat eared fox can open and close its jaws five times per second which is helpful if you are trying to subdue and ingest wriggling scorpions and the like These foxes are small canids weighing between 3 5 5kg and measuring a mere 30 40cm at the shoulder They are primarily nocturnal in east Africa but prefer to be diurnal in winter in southern Africa and nocturnal only in summer They are monogamous and highly social mixing freely with other groups particularly at sites where there is a high concentration of food Gestation is between 60 and 70 days and the young are born between September and November in the Kgalagadi region Litter sizes range from one to six kits INSECT CONTROL The adult male takes over as the main care giver after primary lactation is over around 15 weeks allowing the female to forage again thus keeping up her condition and ability to lactate The male actively defends grooms and chaperones the kits and moves them between den sites during this period both for protection and to challenge them as they develop their muscular coordination in moving around and negotiating more complex terrain The young foxes disperse five to six months after birth and are sexually mature at about nine months of age Bat eared foxes are not threatened in terms of conservation status Population numbers are strong and unlike other wild African canids they are not considered a threat to livestock by farmers and herders In fact they are valued as they control termite numbers which are considered a pest by farming communities I have seen these fantastic little foxes on many occasions since that first auspicious day in the desert all those years ago I have seen them in the sandstone strewn landscapes of Tuli in north eastern Botswana and in the psychedelic neon orange flower garlands of Namaqualand in early spring when the desert blooms and in the arid hill country and grasslands of the Great Karoo They are as much a part of the great dusty thirsty interior of the African subcontinent as the springbok and the quiver tree the Pentzia bush or the stark camelthorn I last saw bat eared foxes while sitting on a rocky ridge overlooking the Fish River in the Karoo heartland July 2021 Dogs Today 53
