Dear readers We Love Pets Changed My Life Beverley Cuddy A s we go to press the media is still asking how and why a professional dog walker died Eight dogs are still being held by the police but unlike human murder suspects there s no clock ticking until they must be charged or released I ve reached out to some of the owners to see if I could help but so far all owners including the other injured person are off grid While the facts are few it didn t stop the papers publishing everything from distasteful speculation to bizarre works of fiction by alleged experts Dog whisperers dog botherers electric shock jocks they all had a story to tell I tried to deflect the press to useful experts Kendal Shepherd is a brilliant vet and behaviourist who specialises in fatal dog attacks she believes that it s only by studying these tragedies that we can ever hope to prevent them happening in the future Then there is Jim Crosby an American ex cop who has travelled the world reading gruesome crime scenes involving our best friends His testimony famously saved a dog in India wrongly accused of killing a young boy If I owned one of the dogs now being held I d be sending Jim a plane ticket These experts are never going to feature generically in something like Silent Witness Dog deaths are rare and a coroner wouldn t normally need someone to work out which dog did what Do you remember the story from many years ago of the Poodles wrongly accused of sheep worrying with no evidence or witnesses to link them to the crime It took three months and a lot of pressure to get them released So who are We Love Pets We Love Pets are the UK s largest pet care service provider We Love Pets is familyowned by the husband and wife team of Ryan and Jo White who have always kept people and their pets at the heart of everything they do For many people getting out from behind a desk to spend more time in the fresh air working with animals working flexible hours and being their own boss is a dream come true This can t be truer for Mike and Jayne who have owned their We Love Pets business in South Oxfordshire for almost eight years Illustration by Beverley Cuddy TRUE DETECTIVES Dog care franchise gave me the support and freedom to make my dream of providing welfare first pet care a reality Jayne Walker Debbie Connolly is a proper expert witness in the news She is often called to give evidence when there is an incident involving a dog walker She works with the Professional Dog Walkers Association there are a couple of organisations but there s no compulsion to be a member or to be registered or licensed Perhaps that needs to change WORST NIGHTMARE We have the perfect storm In lockdown everyone bought dogs now they ve gone back to work they all need dog walkers To the non dog expert being paid for walking dogs apologies for the clich looks like a walk in the park Kids no longer get jobs delivering newspapers now they walk people s dogs for cash I support professional dog walkers who do things properly but we all dread encountering a pack of poorly supervised dogs We ve collated some pertinent questions you may want to ask before using a dog walker see pages 8 9 Before I met my husband he regularly used a professional dog walker One day he got a call from a stranger to say they d found his dog He d climbed into their car Graham hadn t known his dog was missing The man was more than half an hour s drive from where the walker said she had intended walking the dog That was traumatic but nowhere near as bad as your dog never coming home from a walk and hearing that he or she may have been involved in killing someone What a nightmare P Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears and Honey a Cocker Spaniel 4 Dogs Today February 2023 Welfare always comes first Mike and Jaynes focus for the business has always been on each individual animal receiving the top level of service They strive to raise the level of professionalism and customer experience and aim to service every pet s exact needs Mike and Jayne make sure all customers trust their company not just an individual and provide consistency for pet owners and their animals When asked about the pets they care for Mike said Jayne knows every single animal in the business by name They are both truly an inspiration and you only need to have one conversation with them to feel their passion and love for not only the business but for every single pet under their branch s care Jayne and Mike have four dogs a cat and an African grey parrot of their own Their latest addition to the family is a customer s pet from last year that they had been caring for since he was a puppy The owner was going to give the dog up to a rescue centre due to no fault of the dog but Jayne stepped in and offered to take the dog in as her own You become attached and love them all I couldn t let him go into a rescue centre said Jayne How do I find the right pet care provider Mike and Jayne are one example of over 90 We Love Pets franchisees over the UK who are all regulated licensed trained DBS checked and have a true passion for the welfare of your pets Since Covid we have seen a huge rise in the demand for pet care which has increased the amount of unlicensed and untrained daycares and walkers Sadly these unlicensed pet care providers are everywhere keep in mind it is a criminal offence to offer boarding or day care without being licensed by the local authority Choosing the right pet care company for your pet can be a very personal thing While some dog owners like to make sure their dog walkers are reliable and have a love for the pets others also want reassurance that their walkers are aware of laws and are trained in pet first aid Whatever you re looking for here are some things to consider before choosing someone to look after your extra family member s Dependent and reliable What happens if your usual pet carer is poorly Does the company have a contingency plan in place How important is time keeping to them We don t want your dog left for hours on end so it s important your walker carer is there when they say they will be Police checked All We Love Pets franchise owners and staff are police checked It s important to us that we know your home and pets are in safe hands You ll be entrusting your dog walker or sitter with a key to your home so don t think twice about asking to see the results of a DBS check Insurance Never be afraid to ask to see documentation and ask them to confirm that they re covered to transport your pet too Dog walks pack walking Ask how many dogs will be walked at the same time This is important because you want your dog to have the right amount of attention and the walker to be able to manage them all Imagine if a walker had six dogs at once How on earth would they control them all What if a testosterone fuelled fight broke out We Love Pets have a strict no pack walk policy and one walker will never walk any more than four dogs at one time Pet first aid trained Check that your walker is trained to deal with any situations where first aid may be required anything from a grass seed stuck in the paw to a choking situation All We Love Pets franchisees and their staff are pet first aid trained and also have a Vet for support at the We Love Pets head office Being part of a bigger team through franchising only improves welfare for all of the dogs being walked as well as the welfare of the staff walking them Illustration by Kevin Brockbank Quick question Do you have a problem you d like answered by an expert Or do you Email your question to enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk want advice from someone with personal experience of the issue EXPERT ADVICE Natalie Turton www pawsitivedogbehaviour co uk O Why is aversive training dangerous and ineffective 6 Dogs Today February 2023 wning a reactive dog is extremely challenging and the situation is made a lot worse when owners are given the wrong advice There are dog trainers out there using outdated and aversive training techniques for a quick fix but these techniques end up making the situation a lot worse and potentially extremely dangerous There are no shortcuts to changing your dog s behaviour and these quick fixes simply don t work Time and time again I am seeing dog owners contact me in a desperate position after paying hundreds of pounds to a trainer who has made the whole situation worse As a result of this owners are abandoning their dogs as they feel that they cannot cope with the reactive behaviour and dog homes are being inundated with reactive dogs that could have been saved if the owners had received the right information in the first place It s simply heart breaking One of the contributing factors to the increase in reactive dogs is the steep rise in foreign rescues over the last couple of years Dogs are being sold as the perfect family pet however in reality some have been taken off the streets and have never lived in a domestic environment This is leading to anxious dogs with in some cases severe aggression issues Another factor is the large number of dogs purchased in lockdown whose owners have now gone back into the workplace Owners are seeking help with their dogs and unknowingly opting for balanced trainers that use aversive techniques and promise a quick solution to the problem However these techniques will eventually lead to more reactive behaviour in the future In order to get the right results with dog training you need to gain an understanding of why your dog is behaving in a certain way You also need to learn how to recognise your dog s cues and use positive reinforcement So called balanced trainers use forceful techniques that ultimately scare the dog into behaving a certain way These types of training methods will not work in the long term and owners will more than likely be faced with a more aggressive dog in the long run I urge anyone who is needing support with their dog to do their research when looking for the right dog trainer Getting the help you need from the beginning will not only save you hundreds of pounds but it will also be the first step to developing a positive and lasting relationship with your dog P TOP TIPS TO FINDING THE RIGHT DOG TRAINER First think about the type of training you need Is it basic skills or are you looking for more specific help with a behaviour issue It s an unregulated industry and there are no guarantees but you are more likely to get good results with modern training and behaviour modification using positive reward based methods be wary of anyone using outdated techniques pain and force If you are looking at group classes always ask if you can watch a session without your dog so you can get a feel for how they work and whether they are a good fit for you and your dog before booking If you need behaviour help especially if it is a serious issue like reactivity and aggression you will require help from someone that understands how dogs learn after all they are going to be helping you rewire your dog s brain Therefore they will need to stand up to more rigorous standards than your local dog trainer A minimum of a level six qualification honours degree in animal behaviour and accreditation in at least one organisation that subscribes to LIMA code of ethics based on the principle of least intrusive minimally aversive and is therefore using positive reward based methods is imperative Can they see you straight away Good behaviourists often have long waiting lists unless like me they reserve space weekly for emergency cases because they work with serious issues otherwise having an empty diary can be a red flag of all never do anything to your dog that makes you feel uncomfortable just because someone asks you to You have to advocate for your dog and you can say no and walk away any time Most February 2023 Dogs Today 7

Quick question in sharp contrast to the brown of your dog s poop Suppose your dog s poop is slimy or mucousy Don t panic It s the normal lining of your dog s intestines meaning a little bit may just come out as part of the natural process of pooping However if you see a lot of it coating your dog s poo it may be due to inflammation in your dog s intestines or be due to an infection What does poo say about your dog s health EXPERT ADVICE TV vet Dr Scott Miller has revealed his top three considerations for poop investigation Colour Have you ever asked why your dog s poop isn t brown Here is a range of colours that Dr Scott has encountered in his veterinary experience from black through to white Black poo can be very shocking to see and may be due to digested blood in your dog s digestive tract This could be a result of parasites infections or injuries Grey poo could be an indication that your dog isn t breaking down fats properly This may be one of two reasons The first that your dog is ingesting too much fat for them to break down for example your pup broke into your bin and stole high fat leftovers If this isn t the case it could indicate a possible pancreatic issue which would be worth checking with your vet Green poo can be pretty harmless in most instances it can be a sign of your dog eating too much grass However in certain cases it may be a sign of more serious problems like gallbladder issues or parasites 10 Dogs Today February 2023 If you discover a sunny shade of yellow this might be a sign of food intolerances Have you recently changed your pet s diet Check the ingredients and deduce what may be causing an intolerance However if your pet s diet has had no changes this colour can sometimes suggest bile or liver issues Just like black white poo can be slightly shocking to see when cleaning up after your pup However most of the time this might be caused from high calcium intake The lack of pigmentation can sometimes be a result of a raw food diet So when you pick up your pup s poop take note of the colour as this is the first indicator that something in your dog s tummy may not be right Consistency Consistency is key when it comes to dog poop The ideal is soft but solid perfect for picking up A hard and broken up consistency could suggest that your dog needs to drink more water an easy fix One tip is adding a touch of water to their food which tricks them into drinking more Conversely a stool that s soft but broken up could indicate too much water or a recent change in diet for example switching to a different pet food It s worth monitoring to see if this changes Just like us our four legged friends can get upset tummies which may lead to watery poop more commonly known as diarrhoea This can be caused by dietary changes or food allergies think lactose intolerance in humans It may also be caused by infection but gastrointestinal infections would normally present with other symptoms of ill health such as vomiting Size If you know your dog only does small poos and they start doing larger ones it may be a sign that they aren t absorbing the food they ve eaten properly This works in the reverse too abnormally small poos could mean there is a delay somewhere in the digestive system or difficulty in passing stools Just remember what goes in must come out so the ideal amount of poo for your dog should relate to how much they eat Shape A change in shape could also help your vet along with other considerations to understand your dog s digestive health For example if your dog usually has soft curled poos and it s suddenly a solid straight poo Frequency The frequency of their toilet behaviours may be something quick to forget but it can be another indicator For example a change in how often your dog needs to go may suggest infection irritation or inflammation or that your dog isn t absorbing their food correctly resulting in more frequent toileting This could indicate it s time to rethink your dog s diet always in consultation with your Vvet Different smell This is definitely the last resort for most pet owners sniffing poo is a job only meant for dogs but still an important factor to note If dog poo seems to smell sweet this could be another sign of infection Or if it smells metallic this may be a sign of blood in the digestive tract commonly aligned with black or red streaks I recommend keeping a doggie doo doo diary where you can jot down key characteristics of your dog s poo how it feels looks and smells to monitor changes over time This way if you notice any of the above happening consistently over a few days you have all the information to share with your vet It s best to address issues sooner so your beloved pup can continue living a happy healthy life At the very least it gives you peace of mind Us humans can feel a little shy about visiting the GP regarding an embarrassing issue but our pets don t have the same sensibilities Just remember that poo ch happens P Content The final consideration for your dog s doo doo investigation is unusual content within the deposit Fresh bright red streaks could be blood which may be caused by bleeding in the lower digestive tract and warrants a vet trip White spots in your dog s stool may signify worms such as tapeworm segments They should show up February 2023 Dogs Today 11

Photos posed by models Quick question PROFESSOR DANIEL MILLS TOP TIPS TO KEEP DOGS RELAXED ON CAR JOURNEYS For your safety when travelling in the car your dog should be restrained There are different types of restraining methods available such as carriers or leashes and comfortable harnesses that attach to car seat belts All of them allow the dog to sit or lie down Are electric cars better for dogs For some dogs restriction of vision can reduce excitement Restraining them below the window level can help impede their vision of traffic lights people dogs or simply the blur of objects being passed Owners should take their dog to a range of different places so the outcome of the car journey is not predictable For example if you take them on the same route for a regular walk they can become over excited about the prospect of the walk which may boil over to create problematic behaviour that distracts the driver Ignore boisterous behaviours that occur for no good reason Don t punish your dog when they are playing up it is only likely to make matters worse and increase any stress If your dog is stressed or fearful don t try to reassure them as this can actually make things worse Rather ask them to settle then reward the calm behaviour It is better to provide a dog with some form of distraction like a chew toy in advance Reward appropriate behaviour in the car with treats or soothing calm praise Medication for car sickness or stress anxiety when travelling may be helpful in some cases but should only be used under veterinary supervision Use I n a first of its kind study University of Lincoln and CarGurus have revealed that dogs are more relaxed in electric vehicles EVs than diesel cars The two day study was carried out using 20 dogs Each dog was taken on two 10 minute journeys one in an EV followed by the same route in a diesel before a range of scientific measures were used to analyse the dog s behaviour Led by Daniel Mills professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine at University of Lincoln the study not only found that dogs were less settled in diesel cars compared with EVs but that those dogs appearing to show some signs of car sickness had notably reduced symptoms in an EV The study concluded there was no evidence to suggest EVs have a detrimental effect on dog welfare This resolves anecdotal concerns that the 12 Dogs Today February 2023 differences in vibration and or noise experienced in an EV may cause dogs to be unsettled or have increased car sickness In fact findings showed the transition from internal combustion engine ICE to EVs for dogs was a smooth one While the dogs in the study lay for around a third of the journey s duration regardless of powertrain in diesel cars dogs broke their laying position on average 50 more than when in an EV Prof Mills states this is likely the result of differences in noise and or vibration in the two types of cars Another notable finding from the study was that a small number of dogs appeared to feel markedly less nauseous in an EV compared to a diesel car This was demonstrated by changes in behaviour and the fact that their heart rates reduced by up to 30 per cent when travelling in an EV The study also uncovered that many dogs seemed to enjoy the motion of cars With a higher heart rate linked to motion sickness data revealed that heart rates in two thirds of the dogs went down as a result of travel in both diesel cars and EVs SICK OF HEART Professor Mills said We know most dogs will travel in a car at some point in their life if not on a daily basis Yet as EVs become more prevalent with motorists until now there were no studies of their effect on dogs Our results clearly show that dogs seem to be more relaxed in EVs particularly when looking at behavioural traits such as restlessness Additionally an interesting and somewhat unintended revelation from the study came from the dogs that we identified as having potential symptoms associated a calming pheromone such as Adaptil to help settle the dog with travel sickness During their journeys in the EVs biometric recordings of these dogs revealed their heart rates slowed markedly more than when they were in diesel cars This was of particular interest to us given an increase in heart rate is commonly associated with motion sickness It s an intriguing result which raised additional questions for exploration within this field Chris Knapman editor at CarGurus UK said We know from previous studies that the sharp increase in dog ownership in the past three years has caused many motorists to rethink what car best suits their needs To date our advice has focused on safety and practicality and these remain the primary considerations However for those who regard the switch to an electric car as a good fit this study will provide reassurance that it ll suit their dog as well P February 2023 Dogs Today 13

Words REBECCA WALTERS Discover Pupstart s dog breeding courses at www pupstartsbreeders com Babies breeding babies HOW S THE DADDY And what about the boys Well the same applies regarding health and conformation and although males do not usually play an active role in raising the puppies breeding a male dog before he is mentally developed can affect him in other ways Juveniles that have been used at stud can become highly sexualised in their behaviours towards other dogs and it can affect how they interact and play with them These issues are difficult to retrain and owners often report that they are unable to socialise with their dog in the way they did before In the myriad of breeding decisions the parents physical and mental maturity is a vital consideration B ecoming a mother is as life changing for a dog as it is for a human If you have decided to breed a litter ensuring that your female is ready for the responsibility is crucial A common question I am asked by novice breeders is whether the mating should occur on the female s first second or perhaps even their third season The answer is at least the third season and here is why On average a dog will mature at around two years of age both physically and mentally Making parents of juvenile dogs can lead to many complications and long term implications for the dogs themselves and the resulting puppies We must allow our dogs to fully develop prior to breeding to ensure a balanced experience all round Regarding health we need to have undertaken the relevant testing for all the diseases that affect our chosen breed Some of these cannot be done prior 16 Dogs Today February 2023 to a certain age and there are several hereditary diseases that cannot be tested for until they are present for example allergies eye disorders heart disorders and Addison s disease If your breed suffers from these conditions then you should wait and ensure that your dog is clear before breeding puppies that may inherit these issues Mentally the pregnancy birth and raising the litter are taxing for a bitch If the female in question is not fully developed mentally she can shut down unable to cope and process what is happening to her This can lead to anxiety and stress for the mum and in some cases problematic whelping experiences a low mothering instinct and a lack of desire to clean feed and interact with the puppies This will affect the puppies growth and development significantly and could even threaten their lives Conformation is another vital element Is your dog is a good FOUR SEASONS So the question remains should it be on the first second or third season My answer is that the seasons are only part of the answer On average bitches come into season every six to nine months and that can start from as early as six months of age Maturity does not occur until after the age of two so it may ultimately be her third or fourth season before she should be bred from If you want to breed then the dogs in question need to be Over the age of two Fully health screened Conformationally assessed Balanced and developed mentally example of its breed The dog s frame and structure continue to grow and develop until they are around the age of two years Breeding before this time can mean that a conformation fault that could affect the puppies could be missed Breeders need to wait until physical maturity occurs and then evaluate the fully grown dog Mentally the pregnancy birth and raising the litter are taxing for a bitch If the female in question is not fully developed mentally she can shut down unable to cope and process what is happening to her This can lead to anxiety and stress for the mum and in some cases problematic whelping experiences and a low mothering instinct These factors will more than likely take you to at least her third season possibly beyond Remember babies breeding babies rarely goes well Allow them time to develop and blossom into dog parents that can breed and raise a litter of puppies who start out with good health conformation balanced behaviour and a mother who has the life skills in place to rear them well P February 2023 Dogs Today 17

did not believe her guide dog to be real A t first everything was normal Angharad Paget Jones a registered blind person checked into a Premier Inn in Enfield London along with her partner and Tudor her guide dog for the past four years It was Bonfire Night and with bangs and flashes going off enough to upset even the best trained guide dog being tucked safely in their hotel room was a relief Sadly that sense of safety was not to last I had gone to sleep and my partner took out Tudor for one last walk before retiring for the night Angharad recalls Tudor was wearing his flashing lead and as they returned to the hotel a member of staff approached them They said that no dogs were allowed and wanted proof that Tudor was indeed a guide dog The request itself will ring alarm bells for any reader familiar with the Equality Act 2010 which does not place any burden of proof on the owners of an assistance dog The Equality and Human Rights Commission explains Most assistance dogs are instantly recognisable by the harness or identifying coat they wear However the law does not require the dog to wear a harness or jacket to identify it as an assistance dog Some but not all assistance dog users will carry an ID book giving information about the assistance dog and training organisation together with other useful information Again this is not a legal requirement and assistance dog users should not be refused a service simply because they do not possess an ID book Assistance dogs can also be owner trained and the owner selects their own dog to fit their own requirements BURDEN OF PROOF Sadly it is not unusual for owner trained assistance dogs to be discriminated against far too many businesses are unaware of the fact anybody can train their own assistance dog to help with a vast array of disabilities with no need of certification It is not uncommon for the owners of these dogs to be asked to provide proof that their dog was trained by a recognised organisation for example under the ADUK umbrella and to be refused service when they do not provide documentation they are under no obligation to possess or carry It is an unfortunate situation born out of ignorance of the current legislation but at least in Tudor s case it seemed that any misunderstanding could be quickly cleared up Tudor was a guide dog the most recognisable kind of assistance dog that there is and Angharad did 18 Dogs Today February 2023 seemed the staff couldn t wait until morning Some 30 minutes later a knock on the door woke me up It was the hotel staff but that is something that Angharad had no way of knowing at the time They didn t tell me who they were they just kept demanding proof that my dog was a guide dog she recalls I am registered blind and moreover I was in a state of undress only wearing a shirt and my underwear I felt extremely vulnerable and kept the door closed saying that I would show them the documentation in the morning And this is when they barged in using a master key The door stayed open the entire time while I stood there half naked it was a frightening experience Shaken Angharad showed the hotel staff Tudor s Guide Dogs ID booklet in the hope of settling the matter The scene that followed would not have been out of place in a Kafka tale When I showed them Tudor s documents they said it was no proof that Tudor was a real guide dog she recalls They claimed anyone could buy the booklet on the internet One of them said that if I really had a guide dog I would have known I should bring documentation It made no sense not only is it incorrect as we are not obliged to but once I showed them the documentation they wanted they turned around and said it was fake I couldn t win They had made up their mind and said we had to leave LET DOWN BY THE MET One of them said that if I really had a guide dog I would have known I should bring documentation It made no sense not only is it incorrect as we are not obliged to but once I showed them the documentation they wanted they turned around and said it was fake I couldn t win have Tudor s Guide Dogs ID booklet in her room My partner did not have it on him when he took Tudor out Angharad explains We had no obligation to show it in the first place nor did they have a right to demand to see it but he did tell the staff that he would show them Tudor s ID in the morning as I had it and was already asleep He then returned to the room but it Angharad s partner attempted to get the Met Police involved only to be told by phone that this was a civil matter and there was nothing they could do At this point it was about 10 30pm on Bonfire Night and there were bangs everywhere outside Angharad recalls I had to get dressed in front of those people who would not leave and we were escorted out Through all this Tudor behaved wonderfully He sat with me and helped keep me calm He was stressed I could tell but he didn t really react He was more concerned about me especially when I had a panic attack in the car and he cuddled with me After spending the night at her partner s parents Angharad who is also a disability rights campaigner took to Twitter to share her story Soon enough Premier Inn was in touch with an apology and promised to investigate Still she says the problem is wider than just one hotel chain When something like this happens it really hurts your confidence she explains It makes you question yourself wherever you go makes you hesitate to go out in the first place The fact they barged in my room like that it was terrifying No matter what I said to them they had already made up their mind We have gone backwards we really have Ever since the lockdown we have gone backwards I had issues before of course everyone with an assistance dog will have those stories but not as many and never anything quite as bad as what happened on Bonfire Night P ACCESS REFUSAL While particularly harrowing Angharad s story is one of many Recent research conducted by Guide Dogs found that 81 per cent of guide dog owners have been refused access to a restaurant shop or taxi at some point because they were with their guide dog Of those people almost three in four 73 per cent reported having experienced an access refusal at least once in the past 12 months Blanche Shackleton head of policy public affairs and campaigns at Guide Dogs said Guide dog owners deserve to be able to live their lives the way they want and feel confident independent and supported in the world The law is clear and yet guide dog owners continue to experience access refusals which are almost always illegal Our research shows that 81 per cent of guide dog owners have been refused access to a business or service at some point and around half of respondents said they changed or restricted their plans because they were concerned they would be refused access because of their guide dog Businesses and services need to do more to ensure they have open doors to guide dog owners We have listened to the concerns of guide dog owners and in response we have launched the Open Doors campaign The first element of this is the launch of our game changing new app that makes it quick and easy for guide dog owners to report access refusals to us get support or educate businesses on access rights We re coupling this with our ask of the government to strengthen the law in relation to access refusals to end them once and for all POLICE INTERVENTION Sharon Lawrence an assistance dog user and disability advocate has seen many cases of access refusal to people with assistance dogs and she is particularly incensed at the police s refusal to intervene in Angharad s case Police absolutely should have intervened The public sector equality duty Section 149 PSED requires public bodies to intervene to foster good relations and make due regard They were called to a scene where a disabled person was being subjected to a type of harassment that is outlined in the Equality Act 2010 Section 26 creating an unwanted conduct that has the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating hostile degrading humiliating or offensive environment for the complainant or violating the complainant s dignity as well as Section 15 discrimination arising from disability and Section 29 Provisions of Service The treatment she was subjected to absolutely qualifies as such the fact police refused to attend essentially claiming it was not their problem is unacceptable Time and time again the Equality Act 2010 is ignored However Sharon says big changes are coming so watch this space February 2023 Words CAROLE MASON www carolemason co uk D Dogs on deck Is there anything more perfect than sailing into the sunset with your best friend by your side uring lockdown I had time to remember my dreams the exciting ones where I roam distant lands with my best friend at my side I imagined cruising through Europe exploring new cities and indulging in exciting food experiences with my well travelled and well behaved dog at my feet I thought it would be a simple dream to fulfil I thought I would select from a number of options and book online but that was not to be Simply finding a cruise that allowed dogs on board was a challenge and I almost gave up hope until I found a company in Germany that runs cruises especially designed for dogs twice a year Not only are dogs welcome they are embraced with open arms and everything on the cruise is designed around them and for them It is more accurate to say that humans are welcome on this dog cruise So there it was the dream trip for me but I was horrified to discover that there were so many obstacles in the way of travelling to the continent with my dog by my side It transpires that I could fly out of the UK and then all over Europe with my dog in my hand luggage but I had to check her in the hold to return to Britain I looked at the train route but Eurostar only permit service dogs on board and I couldn t find a ferry that would allow me to take a dog on as a foot passenger Reluctantly and with some trepidation I finally opted to hop in the car and do a 1 000 mile road trip to make my dream come true The journey The journey sounds daunting I know but it actually turned out to be one of the major delights of the holiday The boat trip starts in Cologne which is only a four to five hour drive from the Calais Eurotunnel terminal The great thing about using the tunnel is that your dog stays with you throughout the crossing and you hit the road immediately Once you are en route you have a myriad of possibilities of how to break up the journey My top suggestions are Dunkirk 40 minutes with a dazzling array of seafood restaurants for lunch or romantic Bruges for an overnight stop 90 minutes with its extensive canals and gingerbread houses Alternatively you can put your foot down and in less than three hours you can reach the hot springs at the city of Aachen to pamper yourself in a luxury spa hotel The great thing about this option is that you wake up less than an hour from the car park to meet the cruise The cruise A good sense of humour was key to the start of this holiday Picture the scene as 120 dog mad folks arrive with 60 hounds in tow to scramble up the jetty find their rooms and settle down to the first evening of dining with the boat underway and Cologne slipping into the distance The trip was for five days and the route was from Germany into Holland via Cologne Mook Heusden Willemstad Dordrecht 20 Dogs Today February 2023 Nijmegen Wesel Krefeld and returning to Cologne On the first evening a welcome drink is served in the bar and the hospitality staff dog training experts musician chef and barmaids make their introductions accompanied by music parading and cheering all in German naturally I sat befuddled and assumed that the welcome style had set the tone and the trip was going to play out like a 1950s holiday camp experience I was wrong as the holiday camp vibe quickly dissipated to be replaced by a sedate and calming cruise with attentive staff comfortable accommodation and beautiful well timed visits to fairytale towns It became obvious too that all the staff and guests were well known to each other and had been coming back for many years it was almost like a family gathering Wee hours Everything was designed around the dogs There was a grassy area on the rooftop for emergency toilet trips but early morning stops were planned at around 7am allowing you time to get off and walk the dog Within an hour the boat was underway again for a couple of hours during which time dog trainer Dana Weinmann gave obedience classes on the top deck Dana travels Europe training dogs and although her lessons were in German they were entertaining and it was easy to learn techniques from watching She speaks English too and was always willing to assist with a chat after the classes Whining and dining Typically lunch was served before arriving in another town where you could join Dana for the organised dog walk or go it alone before meeting back at the boat for an early dinner and another relaxing cruise along the canals of Holland The holiday is all inclusive of beer and wine throughout the day both at dinner and in the bar If you want to treat yourself you have the option to skip dinner onboard and sample the local food ashore every night if your wallet can stand it After dinner there was always some relaxing live music in the lounge and dancing if the mood took you The boat generally left the dock again about 3am but it never woke me travelling overnight was soothing steady and silent Dogs access all areas Some literature tried to discourage people from bringing the dogs into the dining room but this was met with widespread disregard and no one minded The verdict OK so I admit it I have joined the club and booked again Sure it makes me feel a bit old as it s a little sedate but to have my dog with me and feel safe and sound is just great I ve chosen another route which the musician said has the best scenery and as an obsessive foodie I am going to book a different restaurant every night and really push the boat out excuse the pun The small print It should be noted that although the announcements and menus are in German all the staff speak English and so do many of the fellow cruise guests I never found it to be a problem communicating with the company during the booking process either For disclosure I paid for this trip and have not received any payment from 1Avista Reisen to write this article Trips cost from 829 euros for five nights all inclusive For bookings visit https www 1avista de P February 2023 Dogs Today 21

Photos posed by models Introducing Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions the stress free way to live in harmony with your dog Answering my puppy prayers A s a recent new puppy owner I ve been voraciously reading books and articles for help with the crucial early months of chewing socialisation chewing training peeing chewing and did I mention chewing It s been 15 years since I last had a pup and although much of it is like getting back on a bike the dog training world has changed considerably and there have been many times when I ve been scouring the internet and my huge doggie library for help There s so much fabulous information out there but sadly also a lot of very dodgy even dangerous advice One resource I kept returning to and have recommended to others is Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions the stress free way to live in harmony with your dog It covers everything a new puppy owner needs to know in short concise but entertaining articles Who has time to wade through pages and pages when you re sleepdeprived and on your toes 24 7 There s one chapter of articles on puppies but the other 11 deal Words CLAIRE HORTON BUSSEY with all other aspects of dog life and any problems that may arise The group has content from a dozen contributors One author and also the book s illustrator Emma Judson says All the content has been created gathered tweaked and perfected over the last 10 years of running the Facebook Group Dog Training Advice and Support which currently has over 300k members We began the group because that s where people were looking for advice and at the time much of the advice being shared was horrific outdated and dangerous Our group and now our book bring science based force free and fear free methods to people in an easy to read jargon free engaging format You can find the book on Amazon for 9 97 and we re very lucky to be giving you some excerpts over the coming months starting with these two articles about the first night Words SALLY BRADBURY Puppy s first night It doesn t matter where puppy sleeps at night as long as it s with you Y For the best possible night s sleep all round take puppy to bed with you once he has eaten supper been out to the toilet and is ready to fall asleep 26 Dogs Today February 2023 our new puppy has left his mum and siblings and everything he has ever known in his short life so far He s never been alone before and you need to provide comfort and security until puppy is confident enough to be alone if this is your goal Well meaning friends and family and maybe even the breeder will tell you to put puppy in the crate and leave him alone to cry There is simply no need to cause a puppy to get upset in order to teach him to be OK alone It will have the opposite effect to the one you are looking for Leaving a puppy to cry it out will result in an anxious less healthy fearful dog CO SLEEPING WITH PUP Studies have shown that infants of any social species who have their needs met are far more likely to become confident and independent and that crying it out can lead to dependence and ultimately an adult dog with full blown separation anxiety Be prepared for this to take several weeks or even months with some puppies Do not rush it as a puppy will have several false starts in confidence For the best possible night s sleep all round take puppy to bed with you once he has eaten supper been out to the toilet and is ready to fall asleep For those first few nights sleep while puppy sleeps You may choose to cuddle puppy to sleep and then place him in a crate once asleep This can be on the bed against the wall or next February 2023 Dogs Today 27

SOFA SO GOOD If you do not want puppy in the bedroom because you co sleep with children or perhaps it is the cat s territory then one of you can sleep on the sofa with puppy or with puppy in a crate or pen next to the sofa You will be right there for him when he wakes to take him out to the toilet and to cuddle him back to sleep again if it s still dark outside If the sun is up then you may decide along with the puppy that the day needs to start Pla You will wake up if he wakes needing the toilet but the more contented and soundly puppy sleeps the less likely he is to wake o r w To G n r a ge e t y L r he to the bed either raised to your bed height or on the floor beside you You will then be able to reach the crate to dangle a reassuring finger in it You may find it preferable to cuddle puppy on the bed if he needs the close contact He ll be safe between two people or against the wall with one person Words EMMA JUDSON Cry it out Why what we learnt from children applies to puppies S Young mammals left to cry it out do not self soothe In fact what they learn is that after going through a cycle of protestation then despair they reach a third phase of detachment 28 Dogs Today February 2023 ince at least 1913 there has been a school of thought that suggests leaving tiny babies to cry it out that is cry until they give up crying with the parent no longer responding to cries for attention comfort or contact is beneficial or indeed necessary in raising children At some point this also became the advice applied to puppies with warnings that if you respond to a pup s cries for attention you would as with the child oriented version of this advice create a needy individual who was insecure and lacking in confidence We now know the opposite is true Unfortunately from the perspective of canine behaviour very few studies are done on dogs crying it out This is simply because there isn t money in carrying them out So we are left to extrapolate from studies done on children That s actually OK because a dog s brain is comparable to the brain of a child under two years of age They have similar needs for comfort Our expertly designed Coachi range was developed by Dr Roger Mugford and his team of training behaviour specialists at the Company of Animals The range is focused on training through positive learning experiences helping to create a loving bond between you and your dog Recall Manners Play Reward Tricks Retrieval Find us To explore our collection visit www companyofanimals com

communicating orally and they both lack impulse control and fine motor skills So here s the grim truth Young mammals left to cry it out do not self soothe In fact what they learn is that after going through a cycle of protestation then despair they reach a third phase of detachment Bowlby J 1960s In effect they give up trying to get a response get comfort or contact and become apathetic Their distress is still present they have simply learnt it will not be alleviated as a result of their behaviour They have shut down The theory ran that if you provided attention constantly or responded promptly to their cries so that the young mammal in question did not need to cry they would cry even more and seek more attention In fact the opposite is true COMFORT CALM A study in 1986 showed that the more the mother holds and carries her baby the less that baby will cry and fuss Other studies cross cultural but still human not dog showed that those parents who responded quicker to crying babies also had babies who cried far less often Going back to puppies we have taken them from their mothers 30 Dogs Today February 2023 their littermates and their familiar environment If we compare our domestic dog to feral and wild dog populations we see that our domestic puppies generally experience this separation from their primary caregiver and littermates at between six and 12 weeks of age LONG TERM DAMAGE Their wild feral counterparts are in the constant company of littermates and the near constant company of their parents until weaning Beyond weaning they are still in the constant company of littermates parents and other relatives unless they choose to be alone This is unlikely to happen before adolescence and the related hormonal changes It is true that domestic dogs and wild or feral canids are not the same but the difference is that domestic dogs actively want to be with humans rather than with other canids That being so they are in no way equipped to be isolated and alone any more than the feral or wild dogs would be So what are the risks of subjecting a puppy to isolation from a social group or new primary caregiver and ignoring cries for company comfort or contact The increased cortisol levels can actually damage or kill off neurons and the neuronal Travel Outdoor Accessories interconnections This can affect how well your dog copes with stress anxiety and fear in the future predisposing them to be more reactive and fearful Stress hormones go up faster than they come back down So that stressful experience is affecting the dog for much longer than you might think Possibly days Repeatedly increasing stress hormones will inhibit learning affect sleep affect bonding and attachment Repeated stressful experiences that the subject cannot escape from lead to PTSD in humans We have no evidence to suggest that this does not also happen in dogs Given the similarities between the human and canine brain it is reasonable to assume dogs can also experience something similar to PTSD The short version of all this is there is no benefit to leaving a dog to cry it out Separation anxiety is normal for puppies they need to be with someone most of the time Separation anxiety is an abnormal behavioural issue that comes about because of an insecure dog who has not been taught how to cope by themselves not as a result of creating a secure Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Concern says We don t think anything short of an outright ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public would work As for organised displays we think the minimum we would aim for is going for lownoise or silent fireworks as other countries have already done or the light shows with drones there can be dazzling displays without the danger to animal welfare posed by all these bangs Firework victims YEAR LONG DEBATE With all we know about the impact of fireworks and with so many alternatives for celebration there really isn t much of an argument for them to continue People who are not affected may shrug it off but this is a real issue for animals both pets and wildlife as well as vulnerable people It can be a hard conversation to have without coming across as killjoys especially as people were so eager to get together and celebrate after the end of lockdowns but it s a T he first victims of the 2022 fireworks season made the headlines early on 1 November a man and his dog drowned in Aberdeen Scotland The man had reportedly gone into the sea to try to rescue his dog whom witnesses say had jumped in the rough waters after being spooked by fireworks Neither the dog nor the owner survived and there were still days left until the official beginning of fireworks season on Bonfire Night Around the same time youths throwing fireworks at emergency services across Scotland made headlines Graeme Corbett from animal welfare organisation Animal Concern says the incidents make something clear Scotland s newly introduced ban on the sale of 32 Dogs Today February 2023 fireworks to minors did not work as it should have The Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles Scotland Bill passed through the Scottish Parliament earlier in 2022 It introduces a fireworks licensing system with mandatory safety training for people wishing to purchase and use fireworks however most of the proposed restrictions have yet to come into force The ban on the sale of fireworks for minors was the only major part of the legislation to be in effect as the 2022 firework season began along with new legislation creating an aggravated offence for the use of a firework or pyrotechnic article against emergency workers It is difficult to be specific over what is working and what is not particularly as so much of the Illustration by Kevin Brockbank In what s become a grim tradition at the beginning of each year we look back at those who didn t make it through firework season and wonder how many more victims it will take before there s meaningful change across the UK legislation has yet to come into effect and without data we only have anecdotes so far Graeme adds However the fact that so many youths were able to get their hands on fireworks and use them in the Dundee riots was very concerning they were not supposed to be able to purchase them at all This makes us sceptical that the rest of the legislation is going to be any more effective NOT FAR ENOUGH As the bill was passed the British Veterinary Association BVA considered it a very welcome step in the right direction but expressed concern that the measures simply did not go far enough Animal Concern shares that view Elena Edwards from Animal We don t think anything short of an outright ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public would work As for organised displays we think the minimum we would aim for is going for low noise or silent fireworks as other countries have already done conversation we need to have It s a steep hill to climb but there are MPs in Westminster who are receptive to this message And Graeme adds it is a message that needs to go out all year long A lot of the campaigning organisations ourselves included have made the mistake of talking about fireworks only as the end of the year approached he says It s radio silence for almost a year then a flurry of activity We need to talk about this all year round We are very hopeful we are going to see some significant movement this year As well as campaigning in Scotland where they await to see what results the new fireworks legislation may bring Animal Concern is set to campaign across the UK NATIONAL BAN We plan to campaign UK wide Graeme says The legislation in Scotland so far seems easy to circumvent as is it seems likely that the youths who got their hands on fireworks for the Dundee riots were able to do so locally and it becomes entirely useless if it can be dodged by just buying fireworks over a short trip to the north of England We need something much more comprehensive with UK wide restrictions if not a downright ban so we ll be turning a lot of attention to Westminster this year P A LIFE CUT SHORT A reader who resides in England and asked not to be named reached out to tell us how she made the decision of putting her elderly dog a Labrador cross to sleep rather than forcing him to endure more weeks of fright I had Br l e since he was a puppy and he has always been terrified of fireworks she says We tried everything you name it we tried it but there was no calming him down So every year throughout November and December and sometimes for the entire first week of January we had to watch him suffer Last year Br l e aged 12 became so frightened during a fireworks display not far from his home that his owner feared his heart would simply give in At one point I thought his heart had just stopped she recalls He d had a few health problems in the year just past and watching him tremble drool and cry the entire night was heartbreaking At one point he went still and I remember thinking that was it he had just died of fright right there and then Br l e did not die then and went on to enjoy the next year of his life but as the end of October drew close his owner could not bear to put him through that terror again At this point he was 13 years old and frailer than the year before she says I realised that this time fireworks might actually kill him The thought he could die of fright kept me awake at night it would have been a horrible way to go So I made an appointment and spoke with the vet who had looked after him since he was a puppy He told me that he understood my worries and that with Br l e s age and health in mind he would support me in my decision and put him to sleep He passed away peacefully before the end of October The bangs began just about a week later and heartbreaking as it was I knew I had made the right decision I only wish I didn t have to because I know Br l e could have had a few more good months in him if not for fireworks February 2023 Dogs Postbag Your news views HUSH PLEASE Many dogs and other animals are scared of fireworks If the decibel level were to be reduced people could enjoy the sight of the explosions in the sky without distress being caused to animals and susceptible people such as PTSD sufferers and those who are autistic For the past five or six years there has been a regular debate in Parliament about fireworks The most recent one in November 2021 was triggered by over 300 000 people signing a petition The petition asked that the sale of fireworks be limited to organisers of licensed displays only Sadly the debate was not voted on as it was held in the wrong chamber in Parliament for that to happen There is a limit of 120 decibels dB on domestic fireworks but there is no upper limit on commercial displays I live near Abingdon in Oxfordshire Regular displays are now held at least twice each year at Dalton Barracks which used to be Abingdon Airfield I believe the excessive noise of the explosions is in the region of 170dB The effects are felt 15 miles away depending on wind direction It is known that noise above 85dB can be harmful I have started a petition to try to have the decibel level of fireworks reduced to 85dB I would be grateful if you could kindly publish this letter so that the petition is more widely circulated It can be found at https petition parliament uk petitions 622900 Monica Littleboy Get in touch We love to hear your news and views and see photos of your Healthy Skin and Coat Care Complete range to support your pet dogs Email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk Write to us at Dogs Today Omnicutis for healthy skin and glossy coats The Old Print House 62 High Street Chobham Surrey GU24 8AA Omniotic for total ear health Omnimatrix for day to day skin healing support Join the debate Voice your opinions on news stories and other topics on our Dogs Today Magazine Facebook page or through our website www dogstoday magazine co uk Use discount code DT10 for 10 off your order www vitaanimalhealth com info vitaanimalhealth com 44 0 1256 591032 Offer valid until 1st June 2023 190x133 VITA Ad SkinJ an 23 indd 1 DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS 36 Dogs Today February 2023 BORN TO WIN Gorgeous Coco won a Fun with Fundraising Dog Show in October snatching the first prize for proud owner Sarah Jane Comert a subscription to Dogs Today Photo posed by models There is a lot of talk about educating dog owners to avoid tragic accidents with out of control dogs but I find a lot more education needs to go to the general public who do not own or understand dogs People coming up and trying to pet my dog without asking is such a common occurrence while we re out on walks it s ridiculous They seem to assume every dog is friendly and can be touched by total strangers Growing up I was always taught to assume the opposite My girl is a nervous dog She has a yellow collar and lead that reads nervous dog but it hardly seems to stop anyone Last month I politely told a child at the park not to pet her and the child s parent called me a rather rude name to indicate a part of female anatomy yes in front of the child I had a grown man ignore my request to back off and step around me to try to touch my clearly nervous dog all while telling me that he knew what he was doing My dog almost nipped him and if she d actually caught his hand I could have been prosecuted and she could have been put to sleep It s horrifying how flippant people get Someone even told me I should not worry so much because She s not a Pit Bull or anything I think it speaks volumes of the damage breed specific legislation has done essentially telling people that only some dogs can be dangerous Paula Coates 3 steps to total skin ear and coat health 12 01 2023 09 32

Great Debate If you have an opinion on this subject that is not already covered here putting Great Debate in the subject line Please limit your response to email enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk 100 words This month s result 14 Jeanette Moyer My answer is yes There is a law like that in Washington State the biggest issue with it is getting law enforcement to enforce it Many service dog partners resort to restraining orders when it involves individuals who repeatedly disregard this law I came pretty close to it at one point I know I and others have plenty of stories around this subject Thankfully in a couple of incidents someone I didn t know stepped in These were people who realised that it can be life threatening for a dog to be distracted from their job I think there needs to be a lot more education about the subject Most problems I encountered were with adults children were much more respectful of the dog and me Should there be fines for people who distract service dogs in public Teresa Fletcher We had an autism assistance dog It said all over his jacket Do not distract he s working but people would ignore it and still pet him even when I would say Do you mind not doing that he s working We get ignored and they carry on and in some cases get verbally abused Karen Boll Fine for this fine for that fine to breathe Just explain to people it s not hard Education teaches more than fines Sarah Beazant Only if it is done with malice 40 Dogs Today February 2023 Tracey Burton Why does anyone think it is OK to touch any dog without first asking the owner if it is OK If people had manners and respect enough to ask and respect the response then there should not be an issue Junellen Clausheide Of course not People just want to express affection and service dogs need to be OK under any circumstance Asking the owner if it is OK might be the simple answer and if the owner would prefer for the public not to interact with their dog just say so Does everything have to be so complex Bonnie Smith No fines just more education Abrea Hensley If people actually took no for an answer that would be one thing I cannot tell you the number of times I have said no and people petted my service animal anyway or talked to her to distract her from me or even grabbed her face And that s not counting the people who have become violent and struck her because I said no I educate until I m blue in the face I have literally explained to a man why you should never distract a service animal including by talking to it only to have him get down in my service animal s face and talk to her This wasn t a one off situation this sort of thing happens regularly More education isn t going to fix the problem The problem is that people are entitled and think the rules don t apply to them If fines are what it takes to get through to these entitled people I m all for it Paul Wilson You can t fine people when they don t understand the concept Once more advertising has been done to make the general public aware what an assistance dog is and what their duties are then fines could be issued but years down the line Also lots of people allow others to stroke their dogs so it would have to be one process for all Faith Keskitalo Simple answer yes Brittany Karboski Yes that s like distracting a doctor when they re working with a patient Kate Cook I think the sort of people who deliberately distract service dogs aren t the sort of people who take much heed of the law so educating them wouldn t work You can t deal with stupid so I don t know what the cure is Or maybe I do know but would not post on here for fear of getting in trouble with the aforementioned law myself Helen Pollard Yes I often see a blind lady with her dog I always cross over when I see them and say to my dog that he is working Danny Thomas How would that be enforced Call the cops Officer that lady just petted my dog How about just saying Please don t pet my dog he s working Kathy Biederstadt I know more than one handler who has had extreme experiences with public harassment I had a man try to bribe my service dog from under a table with a hamburger Several people asked him to stop and he would not until it got ugly Hannah Maria Ester Ward When a service dog is working yes I hate people coming over to me when I am training my dogs I want them to be neutral encouraging the dogs to be overexcited and jump up is a big no Ali Orchard I understand how distressing it would be for someone with a service dog as they have the dog for a reason and that is to help keep them safe but I don t think fines would work as they would not be enforceable Education is the best route maybe getting people with all different types of service dogs into schools to teach the children about why people need the dogs how they help them and the dangers of petting them This would also a lot cheaper than an advertising campaign 50 36 Melissa Davies They are working and they don t need a stranger s love Keep it moving weirdo Vicky Beedham No Education not fines Su Carlson Not all service dogs wear harnesses No dog should be petted without consent of the owner anyway I ve been stern with children when educating them after they try to cuddle my very gentle dog without consent as who knows what may happen Not all people are as well trained as some dogs No Yes Maybe Jay Curran Service dogs are considered medical equipment Is it illegal to mess with someone s wheelchair or oxygen tank Yes The same should apply Pam Shaw This is all about manners Diane Craven Yes but it s difficult to police They should also wear harnesses or coats saying I am working do not distract Peter Muller No you can t fix stupid by changing the law Simon Brown Great idea in principle but who would enforce this The powers that be can t enforce far simpler things so I m not sure how it would work P Next month s topic is A family divided opinion after turning their dead Golden Retriever into a rug for their living Origins T he original Cavalier was developed from the Toy Spaniels pictured in the work of such artists as Titian in the 16th century and Gainsborough in the 18th century A popular ladies pet the little spaniels were used to warm laps and became closely associated with King Charles II who was said to be so fond of his spaniels that he could not be parted from them By 1800 the snubnose variety had taken over in popularity and the original spaniel was nearly lost The Duke of Marlborough kept a line alive breeding them at Blenheim castle and the Duke of Norfolk also maintained a breeding programme In 1926 an American Roswell Eldridge tried to recreate the original Cavalier spaniel as opposed to the flatter faced spaniel now known as the King Charles by offering a prize for a dog that most closely resembled the breed in historical portraits The 25 prize was given out at Crufts a breed club was established and the Cavalier was recognised as its own separate breed by the Kennel Club in 1945 44 Dogs Today February 2023 Loving Friendly Devoted Kind Gentle Sweet Happy Owner s view M any wring their hands and despair at the prospect of losing the Cavalier to irreparable health issues but one man has decided to be proactive and do his bit to save the breed The Companion Spaniel Project is Ray Woolmer s attempt to recreate the breed that has enchanted dog lovers since the last time it was recreated a century ago He and wife Wendy had tried breeding and health testing out of the breed crisis but it quickly became evident that a different strategy was needed One of the geneticists at the Royal Veterinary College has said Just don t breed Cavaliers and that played on my mind a long time Were we just adding to the problem But giving up seemed defeatist said Ray Rather than continuing to breed pedigree Cavaliers which wasn t working Ray and Wendy decided that recreating the breed by outcrossing was the best solution After all they figured that s how the Cavalier and other breeds came about in the first place OUTCROSS PROGRAMME Ray started four years of research in 2013 contacting Dr Clare Rusbridge professor of veterinary neurology at the University of Surrey and dog breeding welfare campaigner Carol Fowler among others He also spent the day with RVC geneticist Dan O Neill Ray says We first started breeding in 2001 and had five litters in nine years We learnt about CM SM Chiari malformation and syringomyelia and started seeing it in our lines even after testing and doing the best we could We knew we had to do something different Ray decided on a working Cocker Spaniel and a Cavalier as his first dam and sire and the litter was born in October 2016 Breeding for improvement is a lengthy business There s a wait of around two and a half years before the litter can be scanned and assessed plus co ordinating the timing of bitches in season and suitable available stud dogs One breeder who was using the Brittany in her Cavalier breeding was lined up to provide a bitch but sold up and stopped breeding just before the match with Ray s stud dog The second generation litter was born in January 2020 The parents were Ray s first outcross bitch CM1 SM0 to a pedigree Cavalier CM1 SM0 So the litter of six pups are 75 per cent Cavalier and 25 per cent working Cocker Spaniel One boy was scanned as CM1 SM0 with clear heart and eyes and looked very much like a moderate Cavalier but the rest were CM2 This demonstrates the challenge associated with reducing the Chiari like malformation Ray explains I don t think it is worth breeding on to the next generation using a Cavalier unless we can find a good CM0 dog although perhaps a large Cavalier with CM1 only may be worth trying to compare the results although that carries obvious risks OSLO BREEDING BAN The Woolmers regularly go to Crufts and other shows because Wendy is involved in agility and they have spoken to breeders and tried to get them on board but none have been in contact since But more people are needed if the Cavalier is to survive If anyone has any suitable dogs they think could contribute to the project do get in touch with Ray via Facebook the Companion Spaniel Project page There s positive news beyond the UK though At the time of going to press the Norwegian Cavalier Club will be meeting Ray to discuss outcross breeding due to the Oslo district ban on Words photos NANCY PAYNE Check out last month s issue for our article on understanding the emotions that can drive reactivity Back issues can be ordered via www dogstodaymagazine co uk or by calling 01276 403599 NANCY PAYNE Nancy is involved in lecturing and tutoring for Coape as one of the Diploma Team Members and she works closely with Karin Pienaar on research and development to make sure the Coape courses are kept up to date with the latest research in animal behaviour Nancy s education in animal behaviour began with a trial by fire when she adopted Roxy the shelter dog who kindly provided an opportunity for Nancy to experience most unwanted dog behaviours firsthand including reactivity and aggression towards people and other dogs After a great deal of trial error and eventually a formal education with Coape International www coape org Nancy could help Roxy with her challenges and she now offers private consultations and group classes to address reactivity in dogs in Stellenbosch South Africa Nancy s passions lie in rehabilitation of fearful and aggressive animals helping owners understand and empathise with the animal behind the behaviour As a physicist by trade Nancy also has a keen interest in the science of behaviour and how a better understanding of what s going on in the brain can contribute to applied behaviour modification 48 Dogs Today February 2023 In pursuit of calm Changing your dog s reactive behaviour the subtle world of desensitisation and counter conditioning R eactivity is a common problem for many dogs today Here reactivity refers to unwanted behaviours such as barking or lunging at other dogs people cyclists or anything else that your dog might be considered interesting or scary Before diving in a disclaimer there is no one size fits all solution for changing reactive behaviour and different approaches will be more appropriate depending on the individual dog and their circumstances Importantly several commonly recommended methods to combat reactive behaviour have a high risk of making the behaviour worse rather than better leaving both you and your dog confused and frustrated Prepare to learn about the good the bad and the ugly of tackling reactivity in a reward based and dog friendly way First let s consider a technique that seems straightforward desensitisation Desensitisation is gradually exposing your dog to his trigger at a low intensity so that your dog can get used to the trigger without feeling the need to react bark or lunge For example if your dog barks at other dogs at a distance of 10 metres start your training with another dog around 20 metres away Similarly if your dog lunges when other dogs run then you start with getting your dog used to being around another dog who is walking or sitting still Other ways you can make things easier for your own dog is by first training around calm dogs who ignore your dog and don t make eye contact which can be perceived as threatening or by putting visual barriers between the dogs to break up the tension such as a line of bushes or cars TRIGGERING FEELINGS Sounds easy right Well it depends Although desensitisation can help in many cases it can sometimes be hard to apply in real life and it may only get you so far Consider someone who is really scared of spiders Hanging out with spiders every now and again might help you not panic when you spot a spider across the room but you d likely never get to the point where you actually like spiders or feel comfortable handling them and you d probably still scream if one fell on your head Moreover if you have a bad spider encounter one day you might go right back to being terrified of spiders again It s the same for dogs being exposed to other dogs at a distance is a good start but it s unlikely to help your dog cope if an off leash dog suddenly charges up close to say hi and any bad experiences may erase much of your progress Overall desensitisation alone can be a slow and discouraging way to work on reactivity However before dismissing desensitisation entirely allow me to make a subtle but crucial change Desensitisation is gradually exposing your dog to his trigger at a low intensity so that your dog can get used to the trigger without feeling the need to react bark or lunge For example if your dog lunges when other dogs run then you start with getting your dog used to being around another dog who is walking or sitting still to the approach above Rather than the mark of success being whether your dog reacts or not let success be judged by whether the trigger elicits an emotional response or not In other words it s more important how a trigger makes your dog feel rather than how it makes your dog behave Of course the two are related a scared dog is more likely to react but a mildly anxious dog may be controlled enough to behave well while still experiencing the unpleasant emotion of anxiety Such a dog may indeed gradually cope with getting closer and closer to their triggers but eventually those emotions will bubble to the surface and burst out in an explosion of barking and lunging and you may be left wondering what went wrong Always remember it s the emotion that is most important to address since the emotion is what ultimately drives the behaviour OK great so let s rock on with desensitisation while keeping our dog s emotions in mind But how can we tell what our dog is feeling Well we ask them Finding a way to ask your dog how they re feeling removes the need for us to guess Start with observing your dog s body language from their nose to the tip of their tail Where does your dog express their emotions most clearly READING THE BODY It may be in the ears floppy and relaxed versus erect and alert Depending on the dog tail wags can mean a range of different emotions from happy to stressed to scared A dog s movement speaks volumes are their steps loose and relaxed or controlled and tense Even the muscles around a dog s eyes speak volumes if your dog looks worried they probably are You can also look for any behaviours that hint at anxiety such as increased sniffing lick lipping or even sitting down for a scratch If you re unsure take some videos of your dog when they re relaxed at home or on a calm peaceful walk and compare these to videos of your dog when they re exposed even if very far away to their triggers and note what changes in their body language Learning to understand what your dog s body can tell you is invaluable However we can go one step further we can ask our dogs how they re feeling directly You may have noticed that when your dog is around their triggers they ll no longer accept tasty treats from you This makes sense since appetite is one of the first things to go when you feel like you re in danger or you re getting excited By asking the dog Would you like this treat we re also asking Do you feel calm and safe enough at this moment to want this treat Of course there are other reasons a dog might say no to a treat February 2023 Dogs Today 49

they might be full they might have caught a scent that is even more interesting and so on the context is important However if your dog happily accepts treats 20 metres away from a nearby dog but stops taking treats as you try to get nearer even if your dog isn t reacting and body language looks relaxed that s a sign that some emotions are starting to get stirred up and that you need to slow down with your desensitisation By offering your dog a treat or something else that they like when they spot a trigger we re using a technique called counterconditioning which means changing your dog s emotional response to a trigger by pairing the trigger with something positive For counter conditioning to be successful the treat should be unconditional your dog gets a treat every time he spots another dog regardless of what he does There are two more important things to keep in mind here One is that your dog gets these treats for free he doesn t need to sit look at you or do anything specific If he spots another dog he gets a treat every single time This makes the pairing between the trigger and the So we return to our golden rule reactivity training should occur when your dog is able to tell you I feel safe and calm enough now to accept a treat 50 Dogs Today February 2023 treat very reliable and predictable which helps your dog learn new positive associations much faster Furthermore this method makes it clear why it s important to work under the threshold when your dog is relaxed and not yet barking or lunging you don t want to accidentally reinforce or reward any barking or lunging behaviour If your dog barks at the other dog and then you give him a treat he might learn that barking at other dogs is great he gets fed for it Coape International s Karin Pienaar takes the baton from longtime contributor Peter Neville to present training and behaviour features on all aspects of living with dogs WORKS A TREAT So we return to our golden rule reactivity training should occur when your dog is able to tell you I feel safe and calm enough now to accept a treat If he s too distracted to eat or barking and lunging you need to make it easier for him If he s behaving beautifully calmly watching the other dogs sniffing around or watching you reward that behaviour with plenty of fabulous treats Your dog has earned them While we re at it why stick to just handing out treats In fact there are lots of questions you can ask your dog Another good question to ask your dog is Are you able to look at me right now I often ask my dog Roxy this by simply chatting to her Hey Roxy how s it going over there She s used to me carrying treats on walks so often glances my way when I speak to her I can reward those glances by tossing her a treat On quiet streets it s easy for her to glance my way and earn a treat with very little effort However let s say we turn a corner and spot another dog in the distance If I ask Roxy You still doing OK she might still be able to look my way Yup I m doing fine or she might be too concerned about the other dog to take her eyes off them and that s OK In these situations you re not ordering your dog to look at you but rather you re asking them if they re able to However they respond is useful information If they start showing hesitancy listen to them and give them a little more space until they start telling you they re coping better Once you find a distance or intensity where your dog can cope KARIN PIENAAR Coape International Partner DipCABT Coape OCN CertCAB CAPBT Practitioner ICAN Member CAB Karin has worked in animal behaviour therapy since 1997 After more than 20 years of consulting with dog and cat owners Karin now focuses mainly on managing Coape International www coape org presenting the Coape Diploma and mentoring students Karin is also responsible for course advancement and developed the industrychanging MHERA concept Her book MHERA Mood Matters will be available in both paperback and e book format from DogWise Publishers soon and is a must read for anyone working in the industry Karin is the behaviour consultant to numerous pet companies such as Eukanuba and Ascendis Animal Health and is a regular contributor to several local and international magazines as well as appearing on television and radio when time allows She is often a guest speaker at behaviour related events and conferences When she has time to spare she consults on particularly challenging cases and as an expert witness in legal cases involving animal behaviour

Err on the side of caution making training sessions too easy and relaxed will never do any harm and will rather help your dog realise that other dogs are a signal of easy treats instead of stress You should also keep training sessions short five to 15 minutes is ideal with lots of short breaks where you move much further from the trigger so your dog can fully relax Be mindful of the treats you re using too and don t hesitate to pull out the big guns cheese chicken steak If I got paid 100 every time I saw a spider that would help change my feelings about them much faster than if I only got paid 10p If you re struggling to find the sweet spot to start training because your dog is so sensitive to their triggers here is some additional 52 Dogs Today February 2023 sees another dog can they predict what s going to happen next If your dog learns that every time he sees another dog they stay a comfortable distance away and he gets a treat then other dogs become a predictable source of good things and not bad things However if every now and again the other dog rushes up for a greeting and gives your dog a fright then other dogs become very unpredictable and your dog has to remain vigilant just in case So when working on your dog s reactivity avoid places where you can t control these unpredictable events from occurring for now If you re finding it difficult to set up scenarios for training or your dog isn t responding to the methods above consider reaching out to a qualified behaviourist for additional guidance You can find a Coapequalified CAPBT behaviourist in your area by visiting www coape org or www capbt org under the Find a behaviourist tabs on both sites P 15 22 C M Y CM MY CY CMY FURTHER HELP 17 01 2023 K Nellie SAFETY CONTROL advice to consider Science tells us that control and predictability are two crucial factors in managing stress The more control you have or feel like you have and the more predictable a situation is the less stressed you will feel And the less stressed you feel the less likely you are to overreact if you are triggered The same thinking applies equally well to our dogs thus keeping control and predictability in mind can help us troubleshoot or adapt our training if things don t feel like they re getting any better For example working with your dog on a loose leash or even a long line at a far distance from their triggers for safety can help your dog feel much more in control of their own movement in comparison to being on a short tight leash Any way to help your dog feel like they have more control can be key to helping them relax As above this requires your dog to be relaxed so they re able to make good choices When factoring in predictability ask yourself this when your dog my Lotty well and accept treats build up gradually and check in with your dog on a regular basis Keep asking Are you still coping OK and if your dog starts hesitating or saying no listen to him and make things easier 1 Maisie GH Dogs ad DT 2023 output pdf Dog Pawtraits Why not treat yourself to a unique special portrait of your favourite pooch or as a gift for a friend Cost depends on size and complexity A4 size painted or pencil from just 195 p p For more details just get in touch I m friendly PET portraits by Graham Henderson GAvA Graham Henderson GAvA Aviation grahamhe hotmail co uk tel 07747 529880 www grahamhendersongava co uk

For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST Confessions of a dogaholic I think it was Liverpool manager Bill Shankly who said Some people believe football is a matter of life and death I am very disappointed with that attitude I can assure you it is much much more important than that You could swap football for dogs most of us would agree It was certainly true for our founder Lord Rothermere I knew he loved dogs when I first met him It was his dream to have a magazine that gave the dog a voice But I was soon to discover his dog commitment was unlimited For a start there was what happened when he had a terrible car crash in France He was driving an old Porsche and had his two Japanese Akitas in the back Tragically one was killed outright in the accident and Vere was badly injured and taken to hospital The precious Ryu Ma had bolted from the scene FRENCH DIRECTIVE 66 Dogs Today February 2023 100 2020 WINNER Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 UK REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR realised but each month we were making Vere more and more angry No not with us luckily He decided to invite the Home Secretary around for dinner I had no idea Vere had become so radicalised but he refused to let the poor chap leave until he d read all our back copies Sadly it still didn t get the draconian law repealed but thankfully Vere wasn t arrested for kidnap The Passport for Pets movement was getting nowhere with the Tory PM John Major He wouldn t even meet the boss Lady Fretwell for a cup of Earl Grey It was time to be radical again Lord Rothermere looked at the eager young puppy of a Labour leader Tony Blair Would he be more likely to play Stops dogs pulling on the lead and gives you back control Life Changing products for you and your dog 9 TIMES WINNER OF Product I can t live without PASSPORT TO NO 10 He would Behind closed doors a plan was hatched that even to this day makes me want to pinch myself Lord R said the Mail would back Tony for PM against the Tories as long as he promised to get rid of quarantine and bring in pet passports if elected Vere said he d even throw in taking up his seat in the House of Lords to support it if necessary I am reliably told that the air in the editorial offices of the Daily Mail was blue when they were told to immediately throw everything behind Labour to win the next election The civil servants were pretty annoyed too when Tony got the keys to number 10 and told them pet passports were coming in no matter what they thought When I read an autobiography of Lord R I realised Vere was exceptional in other ways He was the only man with a title to opt to be a private and not an officer when he was called up to serve during the war I ve not known many viscounts but dogs could count on Lord Rothermere P NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT AWARgDCoEllDar Best Do r 2020 21 UK re tu c fa u n a M tive Dog Most Innova cturers Collar Manufa 2019 Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK From his hospital bed Vere sent an order to everyone at the Mail Anyone who could speak French had to leave immediately to search for Ryu Ma Well wouldn t you do the same Who cares about missing deadlines when your dog is lost The clever person who found him was reputedly given the very plush Hollywood job a position that hadn t previously existed But it wasn t just his own dog he went the extra mile for We had been writing about the atrocities caused by the Dangerous Dogs Act I hadn t Lord among dogs Global Also available Collars Non Slip Leads and Gripper Training Leads offering added security and confidence throughout the winter months Endorsed by Dr David Sands BSc PhD CFBA Fellow of the Canine Feline Behaviour Association Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk Winners 2013 2022 Dogmatic UK Ltd is on Facebook Matching accessories in a selection of colours with high quality workmanship and ttings
