Dear readers Beverley Cuddy Vet strength parasite protection Illustration by Beverley Cuddy I m just getting over Covid Well that s my excuse for listening to eight episodes of a new podcast back to back I thought I knew this story Long ago before the pandemic Crufts was on every front page for all the wrong reasons The media called it murder at Crufts This podcast set out to discover what really happened to Jagger the young Irish Setter who had died Spoiler alert it was a fastacting poison Crufts was not the murder scene Jagger was back home in Belgium when he died I often help researchers and try to point them in the right direction I thought when they found out the facts they d make a podcast about something else But no they carried on and found out some other disturbing stories along the way Comedian Kerry Godliman took the lead and tried and failed to find a motive for Jagger to have been killed by a show rival But she did discover another dog that had died shortly after Crufts also in Belgium Mac the Rhodesian Ridgeback was shot I vaguely remembered it and had thought it probably an accidental shooting But the podcast revealed that Mac was shot four times with a semi automatic weapon an illegal gun for hunters The first shot had been to the leg And I d thought it had been rat poison that had killed poor Jagger probably ingested in error No it was an illegal substance quite like the deadly Novichok of Salisbury fame This nerve agent had been carefully sewn into beef The podcast told of how this illegal two step poison was sometimes used to kill raptors to protect very valuable racing pigeons The poison would normally be smeared on a carcass or a tethered bird as raptors hunt by sight not smell It s known as two step because that s normally how far you can walk before falling down dead How did Jagger ingest an illegal nerve agent And why did Mac get gunned down I was gripped I was astonished that a national newspaper had paid pet detective Colin Butcher to investigate the case Annoyingly they stopped paying when it became obvious that Crufts was in the clear And I didn t know that a Pekingese was poisoned at Crufts in 1913 did you Another fact I learned from this podcast is that Belgium isn t just famous for chocolate They have 200 000 pigeon fanciers and auctions for the best birds one sold to a man in China for 1 6 million euros Protecting these valuable birds from predators was put forward as a possible motive Apparently gamekeepers in the UK are also tempted to use illegal poisons and there was a story of lots of gundogs dying at a shoot and people being given 40k each as hush money Back to Belgium someone even had their parrot shot UK again alpaca nobbling Another jaw dropping reveal came from commentator Jessica Holm who had to be shadowed by a bodyguard at one Crufts There had been a credible kidnap threat made against her The investigation into the Brighton cat serial killings was also excellent and even though one attack was caught on CCTV the killer was given a pathetic sentence as it was regarded by the courts as only criminal damage Which brings me back to the present and what I wish for the new year better protection for our pets in the law Will the Kept Animal Bill finally get passed P You ll find the Dead Competitive podcast on BBC Sounds Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears and Honey a Cocker Spaniel 4 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 Easy to apply Fast acting Long lasting No brand works faster or lasts longer bobmartinUK Bob Martin and Bob Martin Clear Plus are registered trade marks of Martin Martin Holdings Based on AVM GSL Spot Ons containing Fipronil and S Methoprene for dogs Use biocides safely Always read the label and product information before use Active substances permethrin tetramethrin S methoprene ES T 1 8 9 2

Words BERNARD BALE Someone like wowooo Photos Instagram adele Adele has travelled the world many both on tour and on television but she is at home cuddling up with her I can t help myself I just love dogs she said I can t help myself they are all so fantastic large or small long haired or short haired I have a love of all animals but maybe you cannot get so cuddled up on the settee with a giraffe or a hippo like you can a dog Adele obviously has a vivid imagination too Although the idea of cuddling up on the settee with a hippo does have its positive side nobody is going to ask you to move or pass the biscuits I do cuddle with my dogs a lot she explained They are always great to go home to and sometimes they also come with me when I am appearing somewhere or even if we are recording They like parties too and are always very well behaved They like cocktail sausages so are always on their best behaviour in the hope of getting more than their fair share Adele has had quite a career already and there is plenty more to come Her recordings have sold by the millions and tickets for her concerts sell out as soon as they are put on sale Yet she did not set out to become a music superstar and for a while was more interested in the management and promotional side of the industry SPICE GIRL HEROES I liked singing from an early age she revealed I used to sing for fun and getting a little older I used to take a guitar into the local park and entertain a few friends I was also a huge fan of the Spice Girls and used to sing their songs at parties and so on I think they made such an impact on girls like myself because they were out there filling the arenas and selling loads of records It showed us all that there is a place for girls not to just be a special guest but to be top of the bill and tour in their own right I know that there have been many female stars through the years but the Spice Girls seemed to make it available to anyone When I thought about a profession it was really 10 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 the A R side of things I went to the Brit School for Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon and that played a huge part in my career because I learned so much about how it all works but they also encouraged me to be a singer rather than just concentrate on the behind the scenes work It would be easy to say that the rest is history but the fact is that the rest is the result of a lot of hard work I ve never been afraid to roll up my sleeves and put in the effort and that s not just with my career but with just about everything she said I am hands on with the dogs too We have a lot of fun together and as much as possible I take care of their feeding and walks and fun I wouldn t miss that for anything I also do my own times performed in front of millions she is never happier than when canine friends dog training It probably sounds as if I make hard work for myself but I have always worked hard and when it involves the dogs it is always very rewarding At the moment Adele has two dogs GOLDEN BOYS I ve got two Goldendoodles who are brothers and the best of friends both a little crazy and full of humour she revealed They are Bob and Freddy and really bubbly You can t help wanting to cuddle them all the time because they are really so very well cuddly They are Golden Retriever and Poodle crosses and have the best bits of both breeds never a dull moment I have had other dogs in the past and cats too and I have never forgotten any of them It is such a terrible wrench when they pass away and I m not sure you ever get over it even when you have new dogs in your family Every dog has his own character and makes such an impact on your life that their imprint stays for ever Adele loves dogs so much that even in concert she has been known to spot a dog in crowds of thousands of people and even invited one and his owner up on stage once I couldn t resist it he was such a lovely little dog and totally not bothered by being in such a large crowd I wanted everyone to see him When I see a dog while I am out somewhere I find it hard to resist speaking to them They always seem up for a chat but I don t like to draw attention to myself too much so I often just look at them and give them a smile HAPPY RETURNS Judging by the permanent grins on the faces of Bob and Freddy Adele s dogs do indeed have a happy home life and in return they give her a lot of love and an escape They are just great to come home to said Adele I think any dog owner will tell you the same thing It doesn t matter if you have just done a concert in front of 20 000 people or more been watched on TV by millions it means nothing to Bob and Freddy They just go crazy when I arrive home and having run around the house and over the furniture they then get down to the real business what are we having for dinner That s the time when Adele becomes a real star she opens the door of the fridge the light comes on and she has the full attention of her audience of dogs That s show business P December 2022 January 2023 Dogs Today 11

by strange dogs outside With pain being such a major factor in many behaviour problems your vet should be an important port of call I d be in a bad mood too if I felt nauseous or had a sore paw Moreover your vet may recommend additional medication to support your dog s journey such as anti anxiety medication for nervous dogs which should always be used in conjunction with behaviour modification through a suitably qualified behaviour practitioner If you want to find one in your area visit the CAPBT the Coape Association of Pet Behaviourist and Trainers at www capbt org Once your dog s overall mood is in a happy place we move on to the next step his emotional state around the trigger How does your dog feel when he sees other dogs Is he fearful Excited Frustrated This emotion is what drives your dog s reactive behaviour and if you can address that emotion then you are much more likely to succeed in preventing the problem behaviour from occurring in the first place Consider a dog who is fearful of other dogs whether due to lack of experience What s that It looks scary or bad experiences Last time I saw a dog I got attacked When a fearful dog barks at triggers he aims to increase the distance between himself and the trigger by scaring the trigger away That is your dog s signal to say I am feeling very unhappy with this situation and I want to get away from here It is your cue to pay attention to help your dog to resolve this conflict Don t be fooled into thinking that removing your dog from the scary situation is the wrong thing to do If you were to force your dog to remain near his scary triggers all he may likely learn is that other dogs still really suck in addition to learning that he can t trust you or rely on you to help him because you were the one that kept him trapped in that situation Rather treat the event as a learning experience for yourself what led up to the scary situation and how can you reduce the chance of it happening in the future while you work on building your dog s confidence For example if the frightening event was dogs charging their garden fences then instead try to avoid that street on future walks If it was an off leash dog wandering up to you in a dogfriendly park avoid that park for now You want to minimise negative experiences as much as possible as this will give your dog a chance to learn that other dogs can be neutral or even positive experiences not scary ones FIGHT OR FLIGHT If you re wondering why a scared dog wouldn t just run away there are a few things to consider about the fight or flight response and which strategy a dog may choose to use in a particular situation Firstly some dogs may have tried running away in the past but found that this strategy failed because the other dog chased them Secondly if your dog is on a leash he is likely aware that flight isn t an option because he may have tried to get away unsuccessfully in the past Thirdly different dogs are more prone to choosing fight make yourself look big and scary over flight based Don t be fooled into thinking that removing your dog from the scary situation is the wrong thing to do If you were to force your dog to remain near his scary triggers all he may likely learn is that other dogs still really suck in addition to learning that he can t trust you or rely on you to help him because you were the one that kept him trapped in that situation 22 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 Coape International s Karin Pienaar takes the baton from longtime contributor Peter Neville to present training and behaviour or sell other dangerous types the Mirror says with no indication whatsoever of what breeds or types a dangerously vague word those would be The definition of a dangerous dog seems to change through the decades Many of you will still remember the time when it was Dobermanns and German Shepherds that were deemed dangerous and even now particularly aggressive people are easily referred to as a Rottweiler Without the proper socialisation and training any dog can be potentially dangerous to people so should the law ban every type of dog large enough to potentially cause life threatening damage in case of an attack That would be a very long list DOG CONTROL COALITION Passed in 1991 as a knee jerk reaction to a spate of dog attacks Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act DDA 1991 prohibits the ownership of four types of dogs and their crosses Pit Bull Terrier Fila Brasileiro Dogo Argentino and Japanese Tosa This was done on the assumption that these breeds or rather dogs who look a certain way the law bans types of dog by their looks even if their DNA contains no part of a banned breed were more dangerous than others uncomfortable stimuli breed is almost uninformative Passed in 1991 as a knee jerk reaction to a spate of dog attacks Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act DDA 1991 prohibits the ownership of four types of dogs and their crosses Pit Bull Terrier Fila Brasileiro Dogo Argentino and Japanese Tosa This was done on the assumption that these breeds or rather dogs who look a certain way the law bans types of dog by their looks even if their DNA contains no part 28 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 of a banned breed were more dangerous than others With a premise this flawed it is no surprise that the law quite simply does not work and yet the Mirror has launched a campaign to ban even more breeds as though slapping the dangerous label on yet more breeds in this nonfunctional piece of legislation is going to suddenly start working after three decades of failure Widen the list of banned breeds to make it illegal to own breed The Dog Control Coalition which includes Battersea Blue Cross British Veterinary Association Dogs Trust the Kennel Club RSPCA and Scottish SPCA soon responded with an open letter voicing their concern for the proposed changes The letter read We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events this year and agree that urgent action is necessary to effectively protect public safety We strongly believe that the current approach for protecting public safety is not fit for purpose and has a number of unintended negative consequences for both humans and dogs Changes are absolutely necessary but to be effective they must be informed by scientific and other robust evidence We cannot support what the Mirror is calling for and we are deeply concerned about the proposed changes Aggression in dogs is a complicated behaviour It is not simply a product of breed and breed is not a reliable predictor of aggressive behaviour Analysis of 256 fatalities in the USA spanning a 10 year period highlighted the impact of ownership and husbandry factors on dogs and the complex genetic factors and lifetime experiences along with husbandry that influence a dog s behaviour and how they respond to different stimuli eg people dogs and other animals These factors include
Quite simply any dog can bite and can be considered dangerous In fact continuing to focus on breed will continue to fail the public and harm the many dogs who live harmoniously with us mismanagement of dogs by owners abuse or neglect of dogs by their owners and dogs left unsupervised with a child or vulnerable adult Adding additional dogs to the current list of prohibited types or measures which seek to manage certain types of dog because they are believed to be more dangerous than others will not effectively protect the public This is not just our view but was concluded by the Efra select committee following their inquiry into dangerous dogs in 2018 Quite simply any dog can bite and can be considered dangerous In fact continuing to focus on breed will continue to fail the public and harm the many dogs who live harmoniously with us There are undoubtedly people who are attracted to certain types of dog and intend to use them for illegal purposes The coalition agrees that it is essential that measures are available to deter and punish owners of dogs whose behaviour is deemed dangerous however this cannot be breed specific in approach We have long called for a different approach and for the UK government to learn lessons from those taken by other countries which shifts the focus from breed to encouraging responsible dog ownership and education We want to see interventions that focus on safe behaviour around dogs effective legislation and enforcement with measures that allow early 30 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 intervention are preventative evidence based and proportionate a better understanding of why a dog bites to help understand better how bites can be avoided More effective science based legislation is something both experts and dog owners have long been calling for One such owner is Anita Mehdi whose dog Lola an American Bulldog cross was seized and deemed a banned type in 2019 Luckily thanks to Lola s sweet nature she passed her assessment with flying colours and was allowed to go home as an exempted dog however she now must be muzzled and on lead at all times in public which she struggled with as a young active dog REPEAL REPLACE Anita was stunned to find out the legislation applied to her dog despite no part of her being a banned breed and even more stunned to find out how common that is I spoke with a dog legislation officer who told me that the most common dogs to be typed are Staffie Labrador crosses Anita told Dogs Today in August 2021 I found out there were litters where some puppies were typed and killed while their siblings were spared It was absurd How could any of this keep the public safe Now Anita has started a new petition calling on the government to repeal the current Dangerous Dogs Act and replace it with a new framework The government commissioned a steering group to provide advice on policies aimed at reducing dog attacks and promoting responsible ownership of dogs However their report is not due until next year the petition reads In view of shocking and tragic events that continue to result from the current legislation urgent action is required now in the interest of public safety and the welfare of dogs Organisations involved in the government s steering group oppose breed specific legislation and agree breed is not a prediction of aggressive behaviour We believe the current legislation is enabling more fatalities and failing to prevent the dog attack trend It needs to be repealed immediately As this goes to print the petition stands at 62k signatures not yet enough to be considered for debate but enough to trigger a response from the government Of course it is nothing we have not read already Repealing breed specific controls with no other changes may increase risks to public safety Any reforms would require careful consideration so that public safety remains at the heart of the regime the response says which is about what they have responded to the previous petition on the matter or the one before that or the one even before that Last time they were waiting for the Middlesex University report to make decisions now that the report is out and casts serious doubts over the effectiveness of current legislation they are waiting for the Responsible Dog Ownership working group s report on the report Whatever they may decide once that report to hopefully end all reports finally arrives change doesn t seem to be forthcoming any time soon Meanwhile innocent pets as well as people are still losing their lives to ineffective legislation that protects no one P You can sign the petition to repeal and replace the current Dangerous Dogs Act on https petition parliament uk petitions 624876 Six of the best For top dogs their owners Lonjevitee Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Autism Dogs Charity trains specialist assistance dogs for autistic children Acting CEO Caroline Preston explains what makes them unique and adults in mainland England Scotland and Wales Breaking barriers Training a dog to assist an autistic person whether a child or an adult presents its own unique challenges While a guide dog or a hearing dog can get a rather standardised training for their tasks dogs meant to help autistic people need a different approach Caroline who is autistic herself says While there can be differences in personal circumstances most blind people for example will broadly face similar challenges such as having to cross busy roads or having to walk around obstacles In these cases once the dog has mastered the skills to help they will be ready to help anybody with sight loss navigate the world COMPLEX SKILLS F rom assisting people with sight loss to sniffing out dangerous drops in blood sugar there seems to be very little that dogs cannot be trained to do A charity based in Congleton Cheshire is training dogs to assist autistic children and adults in everyday life and it is the only assistance dog programme to hold Autism Accreditation from the National Autistic Society NAS Caroline Preston acting CEO of Autism Dogs Charity says that the charity s start was as simple as it 32 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 gets a farm an idea and a family with a very particular set of skills to make it reality It was very much a family thing really Caroline says My husband Andrew is a dog trainer and our daughter Tate is a veterinary surgeon We started the charity in 2016 with help from friends and acquaintances who had experience working with mental health not a huge network and to this day we still work mostly out of our farm where most of the dogs are trained It s been a very busy few years for sure However when it comes to autism assistance dogs things are more complicated There are many different ways in which autism can manifest itself varying greatly from person to person therefore an autism assistance dog requires a more complex range of skills and we must put greater focus on the unique needs of the person the dog is going to be paired with This has caused issues before because well meaning people have tried to train dogs to assist autistic children but they trained them for just the standard scenarios as you would with guide dogs only to later realise this did not even begin to cover the range of issues the dogs would have to face once paired up with a handler It is absolutely vital to understand the people we are working to help their challenges and their needs A lot of those who work with the charity including myself are autistic It helps us better connect hope to meet So how do they choose what cases to take on We are often approached by parents therapists or specialist schools usually when the autistic person needs a new coping strategy and they think a dog may be it Caroline says We probably get something like 12k enquiries a year they then turn into about 600 proper requests which are looked at by our specialists If we think that we have the right resources and skills to help and that the candidate would indeed benefit from a dog we take on the people we feel we can help the most MATCHMAKING We deal with a lot of people in their late teens or early adulthood Teen years can be particularly difficult for autistic people whether or not they can access proper help is a postcode lottery and as they grow older their families may find themselves unable to cope And so too many people shut doors and sit inside too embarrassed to even leave the house with them and we also get to learn more about ourselves we re very motivated to do our absolute best Autism Dogs Charity works with very vulnerable children as well as adults and Caroline says supporting their families is also crucial As the dog is trained in specific techniques tailored to the needs of the person they will go on to assist the families are also taught how to work with the dog Dog welfare is paramount as well Caroline explains They are living breathing beings We need to ensure that the dog s needs are also met so that they can have a happy life while also providing a benefit to their new family We are not handing these people a tool we re giving them a partner and both sides need training and support to thrive together LUCKY PICKS It is estimated that around 700k people in the UK have a diagnosis of autism This leaves Autism Dogs Charity in the same position as many other charities who train assistance dogs an overwhelming demand that they cannot possibly Once they are enrolled we do more detailed profiling as it gives us a better perspective on what the right dog would be We work with the information we have and then we bring in dogs to assess and put together the candidates Each of them will have been through behavioural assessment already by that point so that we know they can cope with things and are happy with the job they are given They go through some very basic training first once we see they are ready for further training they meet the candidate After being matched having done the basics they do another three months of more specialised training and then the client comes to the farm and starts working along with the dog and the trainers During the time of basic training the future handler s family also goes through assessments and mental health support As well as preparing them to work with the dog we work with all immediate family members and carers and give them coping December 2022 January 2023 Dogs Today 33
with oppositional behaviours when the autistic person cannot tolerate the touch from a person or anyone in their personal space because even then they will let the dog in Dogs can get through so many barriers it is amazing to see Caroline third from left with some of Autism Dogs clients Once everyone is stable we start to have the dog learn more about the specific tasks they may have to do or learn to cope with what is likely to happen We prepare them through play and gameplay so that they can recognise the signs of something about to happen such as anxiety attacks or a meltdown and they can intervene before things get out of hand defusing the situation Our dogs are extremely effective at interrupting self injury and self harm They can calm people and motivate them to get up in the morning and look after themselves They can work wonders Unlike other assistance dogs charities Autism Dogs asks the families to make a sizable contribution towards the training of the dog something they are looking to change Caroline says Currently our clients are asked to contribute 14 990 to their programme which is a percentage of the true costs involved thanks to the volunteer work contributed Of course this may include the training of multiple dogs if the first match doesn t work out We changed our Community Interest Company CIC model to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation CIO model to enable us to raise donations and access grants to reduce this cost further so that we can offer our service to people on lower means or unable to fundraise Grow To n r a ge e t y L r he WORKING WONDERS Funding model Pla strategies as well as tools to deal with some things differently if we feel that is needed explains Caroline Other family members may need help like distressed siblings We try to give them all the best help all around and that is before we even add in the dog Autism Dogs Charity trains dogs to help autistic people of all ages but Caroline says there is a demographic they see a lot of teenagers We deal with a lot of people in their late teens or early adulthood Teen years can be particularly difficult for autistic people whether or not they can access proper help is a postcode lottery and as they grow older their families may find themselves unable to cope And so too many people shut doors and sit inside too embarrassed to even leave the house GREATEST STRENGTH We probably get something like 12k enquiries a year they then turn into about 600 proper requests which are looked at by our specialists If we think that we have the right resources and skills to help and that the candidate would indeed benefit from a dog we take on the people we feel we can help the most 34 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 I think the fact our programme is run in most part by autistic people is one of our greatest strengths We know this shame this lack of understanding Being autistic does not mean you re stupid and not capable even though it can feel like it you can be hugely capable but express yourself differently in a way most people don t understand It s always good to see the difference we can make and the trust between the dogs and their handlers The dogs become so important to them it changes the entire household s pecking order with the dog at the very top but we have yet to hear a complaint about that P For more information on Autism Dogs Charity visit www autismdogs co uk Our expertly designed Coachi range was developed by Dr Roger Mugford and his team of training behaviour specialists at the Company of Animals The range is focused on training through positive learning experiences helping to create a loving bond between you and your dog Recall Manners Play Reward Tricks Retrieval Find us To explore our collection visit www companyofanimals com

travelling up my arm They wanted to admit me and I told them I had six dogs at home to finish the bag of IV antibiotics and write me a prescription for more because I was going home COST OF LOVING I have seen a lot of articles and blog posts on how the cost of living crisis is affecting animals and I have also seen and heard people commenting disparagingly saying that we should worry about people first What part of helping struggling pet owners care for their pets does not qualify as helping people Are pet owners not people Having to give up one s pet is the kind of pain I wouldn t wish on anyone There is so much guilt and so many what ifs so much blaming yourself because ultimately you were supposed to provide for them and were unable to do it I m not even going to get into the mental health angle of it What a blow for someone who has lost financial security to also lose their pet I grew up rather poor and our parents sometimes would go the entire day on just one meal but they knew how much losing our dog would have hurt us kids much more than having to wear ill fitting hand me downs They went to great lengths so we didn t have to give him up That dog made my childhood so much brighter and I know my parents still think it was well worth the sacrifice Jo Kelly Kimberly Craig I don t have time for someone to freestyle some stitches on a wound that s probably already stopped bleeding But if I don t feed my cats on time one bloody gash will be the least of my problems Kim R Cooper I have removed my own IV and walked out to go home and care for my fur babies Something always comes up to delay a discharge But an IV definitely won t hold me hostage Hannah Weiss I was involved in a car accident and was taken to the emergency room I could stand and walk so nothing serious but they wanted to check me out Unfortunately I was low priority and there were a few emergencies taking precedence all while my dogs were home alone and no one could go walk feed them In the end I had to get up and walk out I was so frazzled I didn t tell anybody I was discharging myself so I caused some confusion when it was finally my turn and I was gone from the stretcher Mike words Kara Williams Personally I have not had any problems since my vet practice has been acquired by a corporation However I would welcome an enquiry no harm can come from an assessment of the situation Trace Brown Yes 100 there should be an enquiry Corporately owned veterinary businesses are unregulated and can charge what they like to the detriment of patient care the instances of economic euthanasia for example must have rocketed The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has zero jurisdiction over these businesses as they only deal with serious professional misconduct whatever that is taken to mean of named veterinary surgeons and nurses on their register They have no powers to act if a client or employee has a complaint about a corporately owned business and no powers to cap fees Despite this many of the RCVS council now work for corporate vets so corporate interests are very much represented by the RCVS despite them having no jurisdiction over them The large scale buyout by the corporates was done predominantly by stealth with the client having no idea the practice they had been going to for years in many instances was now no longer owned by the vets themselves and seemed to be done quite deliberately under the radar of the Competition and Markets Authority Many corporates also have monopolies in some areas not only the day vet but also outof hours In East Lothian where I live for example there are no independently owned veterinary Should there be an enquiry into the corporate takeover of the veterinary profession in the UK Maria Ruiz Rosado Definitely I ve had to change vets several times as prices doubled just after being bought by a big company It would be great if there was some sort of control Jo Marshall Yes absolutely Liz Underwood Yes 40 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 Jacob Green Yes why not I feel like a bit of an outlier as I don t have strong feelings one way or the other but surely an enquiry cannot hurt If it finds that the situation needs changing then it s a step towards change if it finds things are fine as they are it should put the matter to rest I see no downsides to a fair enquiry Julie Butler Definitely I wonder what s the view of the Competition and Markets Authority Carole Morton Vet treatment is becoming unaffordable which will lead either to animals being put to sleep or left to suffer Annette Lockhart At this moment I think we as a country and pet owners have much more pressing problems to be concerned about to be honest In the future though no reason not to hold an enquiry It can go either way so no real reason to be against it unless it s to hide something in my view practices left All practices are private equity owned by two companies who both run their own out of hours services My dog s case featured in a Daily Mail article in January 2022 She had a botched surgery in January 2019 at my local practice which led to her having to have 42cm of intestine a ureter and kidney removed From the original surgery she had a further three life saving surgeries and an 11 night stay at the out of hours hospital they use which cost almost 7 000 I had no idea at the time that both practices had been sold to the same company So in essence one practice made mistakes which another practice fixed but either way the same company gained financially to fix these mistakes After this horrific experience I obviously moved vets I am now with another corporate chain as there is no other choice where I live If something were ever to go wrong with this practice there is literally no other veterinary practice in my county I sadly lost one of my dogs in April this year and my practice wanted me to use a pet crematorium that happens to be owned by them but they didn t tell me this I knew this was the case and chose to use an independently owned crematorium nearby but I thought this showed a lack of transparency There is no realistic consumer protection for veterinary clients This month s result 8 92 No Yes Maybe other than the civil court which is another issue that needs to be resolved it is practically impossible for a client to hold a vet accountable The vets and therefore the businesses they work for are protected by indemnity insurers but the client has no such protection If the client has pet insurance then they will cover the cost of treatment etc but if negligence mistakes have occurred then the vet practice is still being paid and isn t losing out financially Many of the corporates also pay for membership for their employees to the British Veterinary Association which again gives them much influence in this organisation The BVA would be unlikely to want to make any decisions that might upset their corporate founders by way of large scale paid memberships P Next month s topic is Should there be a penalty for distracting an assistance dog Email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk with your thoughts putting Great Debate in the genetics research manager at the Kennel Club EXPERT ADVICE Dr Tammie King pet behaviourist at Mars Petcare s Waltham Petcare Science Institute MYTH 1 Pets that need to be rehomed are broken Be patient No pet comes as a ready made perfect companion regardless of whether you buy or adopt Adopted animals have often experienced more changes in their lives so can be quite sensitive to disruption But it s important that you take time to build a relationship of trust MYTH 2 Pets are only in a shelter as they weren t good pets for someone else Behaviour can be modified Pets are given up for many reasons from their owners losing jobs cost of living unwanted behaviour families splitting up moving abroad downsizing As with any new relationship your adoptive pet may not show their true personality until two or three weeks after you ve brought them home as it takes them time to settle Be mindful of this and work with your new adopted pet to bring out their best side MYTH 3 You don t know the medical history of pets that need rehoming Often adopted animals from shelters come with part 48 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 or full behavioural and medical history Also it s worth carefully considering their diet It may seem like a little thing but it can make a big difference to the settling in process Ask the shelter what the dog has been fed previously and if they have any specific dietary requirements MYTH 4 Pets in shelters are always badly behaved Be mindful of individuality Cats and dogs have species specific needs and their own individual personalities Be sure that you give your new pet the opportunity to express their natural behaviour Ways to do this might include giving them mental stimulation through food dispensing toys training and also physical exercise Shelters are terrific sources of advice on pets individual traits MYTH 5 You don t know what you are getting with an adopted pet Establish a routine and ensure they have lots of positive experiences Where do they eat sleep go to the toilet Be clear and consistent as this helps to set the pet up for success It s important to encourage desirable behaviours for example toileting in the right place chewing appropriate items and how to interact with people DNA tests can check a dog s genetic status for known simple inherited conditions helping owners to better understand their dog s genes These services can have a huge impact on dog health by providing vital information for those who are thinking of breeding and want to avoid passing on inherited conditions to puppies as well as owners to know what conditions their dog may develop as they get older DNA tests for health are different to DNA breed identification tests which match a dog to the most likely breed s The DNA tests for health such as the Kennel Club s new DNA Testing Services allow owners and breeders to find out if their dog is likely to be affected by specific conditions and whether they may pass on the genes associated with these conditions if they re bred from The conditions tested for through these DNA health testing services are caused by a mutation in just one gene and as a result the inheritance of these conditions in puppies can be easily predicted if the parents have been tested With this knowledge breeders can make informed decisions to lower the risk of producing puppies affected by known health conditions and DNA testing offers a real opportunity to remove such disease causing genes from the breed s gene pool in a responsible manner Research has shown that the number of dogs at risk of inherited diseases can be dramatically reduced by responsible breeding thanks to the use of DNA tests Researchers from the Kennel Club have found that around 10 years after a DNA test becomes available the frequency of gene mutations that caused the disease in some breeds can decrease by a staggering 90 per cent or more By using DNA tests caring and responsible breeders can have a genuine and positive impact on the health of future generations of dogs in an easy accessible and costeffective way Specifically with the Kennel Club DNA Testing Services those who use the service can also contribute to driving further understanding of canine genetics and disease and the development of dog health initiatives with all data and profits reinvested into research as part of our mission of making a difference for dogs For owners understanding their dog s genetics and knowing which testable hereditary conditions they may be affected by allows preparation for the future Some dogs affected by hereditary conditions can go undiagnosed during the early stages of disease and missing the early signs of disease can leave dogs in unnecessary pain or discomfort Knowing in advance and being able to spot the early signs allows owners to take preventative steps to support their dog s health avoid conditions going undiagnosed and untreated and potentially avert costly vet bills to cover diagnostic tests and treatments later on DNA tests are increasingly based on a simple cheek swab that can be easily used at home by a dog s owner to collect their DNA sample This swab is then returned to a laboratory where the DNA is extracted from the cheek cells and analysed to determine whether the dog has any copies of the mutation s being tested for This type of DNA testing can take the guesswork out of looking after a dog s health and future for owners and more broadly can be used to reduce and ultimately eradicate significant inherited genetic disorders in dogs through responsible breeding The Kennel Club launched its DNA Testing Services in November developed to improve and protect dog health via genetic research and to promote responsible dog breeding Available for 80 breeds it checks a dog s DNA via a single cheek swab for a number of different inherited disorders and provides condition and or breed specific advice for breeders and owners A special Crufts discount will be available in March To access the service visit thekennelclub org uk TheKennelClubDNAtesting More information about the impact of DNA testing on dog health and the benefits for owners and breeders Jack Russell Terrier Photo posed by models Quick question Five cleaning hacks to remove pet hair from your sofa EXPERT ADVICE Ray Jones sofa expert at interiors retailer ScS has shared six simple cleaning hacks that will banish pet hair and have your sofa back to normal in no time much water as this will result in soaking the sofa and could take a while to dry while also leaving water marks 1 Vacuuming Use a vacuum cleaner that is specifically designed for picking up pet hair and work it in multiple directions to loosen any stubborn hairs Don t forget to take off the base cushions arms and sides to really give your sofa the clean it needs to remove fur 3 Wipe it with tumble dryer sheets Running a tumble dryer sheet over your sofa can help trap pet hair thanks to the static absorbing quality of the sheets What s great about this hack is that as well as removing the hair and any dust build up you re also leaving a lightly scented trail behind so your sofa feels extra fresh 2 Rub it with a rubber glove Pop on a rubber glove slightly dampen it with water and then rub it over the surface of your sofa It may not be as thorough as a vacuum cleaner but you ll be amazed at how much fur you do pick up This also works with a rubber squeegee or a damp sponge just make sure you rub in different directions to pick up all the hairs Be careful not to use too 4 Go over it with a lint roller Lint rollers particularly come in handy when trying to remove unwanted pet hair Run it over your sofa and rip off the sections that get clogged with hair just as you would with your clothes Lint rollers tend to be more effective at getting rid of fur on larger surfaces eg your seat cushions and the back of your sofa because of their chunky design If you don t have a lint roller 50 Dogs Today December 2022 January 2023 to hand you can also do this with some sticky tape for a similar effect We recommend using parcel or duct tape for maximum efficiency just be careful not to be too aggressive or you risk damaging the fabric of the sofa 5 Run a sports sock over it Slightly dampen a sports sock turn it inside out put it over your hand and then you can pick animal hair off unwanted surfaces Sports socks work better than normal socks because they re thicker Again go easy on the water you don t want to end up with a soggy sofa Removing pet hair from sofas can be an unpleasant job but it s quick and easy with the right knowhow If you want to completely avoid getting hair on your sofa it s best to cover the areas your pet likes best with a blanket as a preventive measure That way all you need to do is bundle the blanket up and give it a wash to remove any unwanted hair
