Dear readers Beverley Cuddy Illustration by Beverley Cuddy I watched Crufts from the sofa and the gundog winner and eventual Best in Show was Orca who was just having the best time She was like a little fluffy Freddie Mercury strutting around the main arena I ve never seen a dog look quite so thrilled to be in Birmingham Someone flicking through the channels could have been forgiven for presuming a Cockapoo had just won Crufts Of course Orca s a Lagotto Romagnolo from Croatia And as Lagottos are a lot of dog there was a real fear they d become as popular as Doodles overnight We ve asked an existing owner to tell us what they re really like to live with see page 6 The UK dogs struggled against all the overseas talent The groupwinning Old English had been chauffeured all the way from Greece I admit my heart skipped a beat when I saw the British Cavalier win the Toy group He was stunning In the post win interview it was revealed this young dog was the result of a mating in America Talk about going the extra yard for genetic diversity But my smile turned to a frown when I heard all the Cavalier health people complaining that this very handsome young dog had already been used at stud an eye popping number of times but all the essential health tests didn t seem to be in place I was soon country hopping myself to attend Purina s Unleashed Pet Tech Meet Up in Linz Austria I was hoping to network with other pet tech entrepreneurs and find some possible investors to give the Bark Angel the runway it needs to take off The Bark Angel aims to change the way the public buys dogs it will create a meritocracy so pet owners only find the good breeders rescues trainers and groomers I ve always secretly thought that Unleashed organiser Kim Bill sounded like a Quentin Tarantino character so it did make me giggle that we were meeting up at a restaurant called Glorious Bastards The evening was like Dragons Den crossed with Crufts with some speed dating thrown in All the start ups had blue name badges and all the investors wore red I will be writing more soon but there was a very mediafriendly vet from Australia who had invented a microchip that can monitor all your dog s vital signs plus give you accurate location via a satellite And then there was the Mexican biologist with a simple swab test that will map every health issue and give a predicted lifespan too if desired And when she has collected enough dogs data she will be able to suggest the healthiest possible sires to mate your dog with I have put Honey s name down for this test and I hope to amplify her work in the future Her own Chihuahua was her inspiration I also met a couple of academics one wanting to bring a new treat to market that really helps dogs with arthritis and the other looking at a public access test that would enable wellbehaved dogs to access more shops restaurants and travel And I met a scientist who was developing a properly vegan protein for dogs out of a new fungus Honestly everyone I met was out of this world One of the investors had previously designed the first satellite to go to Mars this really was a room full of geniuses that love dogs Will one or two of them invest in the Bark Angel Watch this space P Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears and Honey a Cocker Spaniel 4 Dogs Today April 2023 Skechers co uk

When photos of the Crufts Best in Show winner circulated on social media there were many comments from people thinking that Orca was a Cockapoo The Lagotto Romagnolo is a rare sight in the average UK dog park so we asked one owner what they are really like to live with Jen Smith is an IMDT qualified dog trainer who runs Be Brilliant Dogs Jen is based in Knighton Wales and shares her life and sofa with her three dogs Basil the Lagotto Etta the Pyrenean Sheepdog and East the Border Collie www BeBrilliantDogs co uk Lagotto what I f you watched beautiful Orca the Lagotto Romagnolo winning Best in Show at Crufts and now you want to know more about the breed then grab a cuppa and read through what my life is like with Basil my seven year old Lagotto Basil s best bits are also his most challenging so let s go through them FIRSTLY THAT COAT Photo Tim Rose www timrosephotography co uk Crufts Best in Show 2023 Orca and Javier Photo Beat Media The Kennel Club Jen Smith with her Lagotto Romagnolo Basil Photo Allan Brown Words JEN SMITH It never sheds When I ve met people who have suffered with allergies they don t seem to be that bothered by Basil The coat is rustic so there s no blow drying or excessive styling It mats easily so it does felt under a harness or a coat This means you need to brush through with a comb that gets down to the skin It s hard work to do this on a regular basis The coat also needs clipping I clip Basil myself every eight weeks and it s back breaking work He doesn t shed from the hair in his paws either so they get easily filled with mud from digging so I do have to do a fair amount of paw maintenance which means a lot of training to make sure he is OK with me touching his paws 6 Dogs Today April 2023 HE S VERY CLEVER HE LOVES WATER Basil is smart Dead smart We ve completed successfully in scentwork heelwork to music and breed showing He learns new things very quickly and loves his training We ve travelled up and down the country going to workshops and competitions He absolutely loves these days and he is at his best on these days too He learns stuff I don t want him to learn very very very quickly He remembers where the foxes poo on our walks and even if we don t walk that route for weeks he still remembers it the next time He knows when I don t have the good treats on me he knows when I m getting ready to go out without him versus with him He knows me better than I know myself and honestly that can be challenging to live with He needs training and to use his brain I cannot stress this enough these dogs need a job to be happy He loves a beach a river or a lake He can swim well and loves to water retrieve Say goodbye to the smart interior of your car that s going to be a swamp of towels and vet bed in the winter If I make a mistake in my training perhaps I click on the wrong place a few times he doesn t forgive me easily if I try to adjust my criteria This makes me a better trainer If I make a mistake in my training he doesn t forgive and forget easily I have to find a new way to train it which can be hard He also gets frustrated quickly and occasionally that emotion has been trained in when I ve taught something that hasn t gone as smoothly as I wanted HE IS MASSIVELY FOOD MOTIVATED HE BARKS ALL THE TIME He is trainable I can use food as a reward in all environments and I always have something he likes He will steal food at any given opportunity See the point above Yeah he once managed to unzip a backpack to get into my sandwiches at a workshop No one would get into my house undetected He barks when he is happy when he is frustrated when he sees something that shouldn t be there he barks in play he barks to guard Put it this way one of my other dogs is a Pyreanean Sheepdog and they are known for excessive barking in comparison she is a quiet dog beside Basil HE IS SELECTIVE IN WHO HE LIKES He won t leave me to go and say hi to someone in the park he d rather be with me than hang out with other dogs or people He can be suspicious of new dogs and sometimes actively dislike some This means I have to be aware of the interactions he has and manage them appropriately Lagottos do not have a Golden Retriever personality they do not assume that everyone in their world is the best thing ever If you want a dog like that a Lagotto is not a good bet for you HE IS UNFORGIVING Finally the Lagotto is an ancient breed They have been around for a long long time and form the foundations of many other breeds This means that somewhere in them there is a deep wildness a feralness to them that will never be fully tamed If all that sounds like things you can live with then a Lagotto could be for you They are incredible little dogs P April 2023 Dogs Today 7

Words BEVERLEY CUDDY Photos BRIDGET DAVEY www bridgetdavey com Hearts and Crufts It s just four days long but the show squeezes in so much and there s always some drama too T he Kennel Club is 150 years old which isn t that long when you think of it in dog generations Crufts is younger but it has changed so much even in my lifetime Just as Wimbledon is rarely won by a Brit these days Crufts could be waiting a long time for the canine equivalent of an Andy Murray The public were back in the same numbers as they were for the 2020 show which was on the cusp of lockdown and one of the last public events not to be cancelled for Covid But for those who still stayed at home there was more TV to watch than ever and a constant live stream on YouTube There was a meaty discussion on the sofa about French Bulldogs and their problems Lots of charities had launched a campaign called Save Our Breath to highlight breathing issues Noel the Supervet bravely talked of the growing corporatisation of his profession and how no one else would operate on a dog injured in a car crash as the owner was in a coma It is so true that without a credit card very few emergency vets will even look at your dog There was a wonderful moment caught on camera when a young girl battling stage four kidney cancer won a second prize to rapturous applause from the crowd She had battled to be well enough 8 Dogs Today April 2023 Her dog will have deserved that placing in my experience judges never give in to emotion The Bulldog that won Best of Breed last year missed the group as the vet check was failed We never do hear what it was they are marked down on Hero dog was won by a rescued Staffie who had been a serving police dog I wish more forces would consider employing these lovely dogs ENGAGEMENT RING I noticed that Bearded Collies had a huge entry and while I didn t recognise the names of the winners the dogs did look rather familiar It turns out even though they came from Sweden and Holland both top dogs had my first Beardie in their pedigrees admittedly a very long way back The Dutch dog touched my heart particularly He had Christopher Robin as an ancestor the beautiful brother of Sally who left at 12 weeks to live with friends just outside Amsterdam New readers may not know but Sally was the dog by my side when I first edited Dogs Today I ve never thought of Crufts being a particularly romantic destination but this year a brave young man dressed as a dog to propose to his girlfriend who is a top winner in agility She said yes Who could resist puppy dog eyes P April 2023 Dogs Today 9

What are some tips to care for an older dog Dr Tammie King pet behaviour scientist from Waltham Petcare Science Institute shares some tips as part of The Adoption Mission by Mars Petcare in partnership with Woodgreen Pets Charity E Old dog new tricks Older dogs can definitely learn new tricks and should still be given the opportunity to stimulate their brains through training and play if they re keen to participate Take it slowly and work on things that are gentle on joints avoiding too many repetitive movements that could be difficult for dogs who may be less mobile than their younger counterparts 14 Dogs Today April 2023 Doggie diet It s really common for a dog s appetite to change as they get older If your elderly dog is fit and healthy you might notice food becoming more important to them as they age However just like us humans as a dog grows older they tend to require slightly fewer calories as they are generally less active than in their younger years Most dog foods are based on the different stages of their life Food specifically made for older dogs is often lower in calories and many have added joint supplements too Scatter feeding Sprinkling treats in a garden or other grassy area can encourage sniffing and searching Dogs will do this at their own pace and it s an enjoyable exercise for them Get thrifty and use empty cardboard boxes flower pots plastic bottles and egg cartons to increase the challenge to keep them mentally stimulated this will help keep them on their paws Staying active Older dogs don t need as much intense exercise and can be very happy with slightly shorter slower walks If your golden oldie isn t up to walking the distances they used to then some quality time doing whatever they enjoy is important If they like the car you can still drive to their favourite places and enable them to explore and mooch around before driving home again Allowing them time to sniff on their daily meanderings is incredibly enriching for them so DE I Veg an N TH very dog s quality of life is extremely important regardless of age As our pets are considered to be members of the family owners often strive to seek out advice on how they are able to help their dogs live healthier and longer lives so it is important to consider this preventative approach to pet care Meaty Bubbles MA EXPERT ADVICE E UK Cocker Spaniel Photo posed by models Quick question Vegan Gluten free non toxic bubbles for cats and dogs Follow us on Instagram TIkTOK meatybubbles Shop our full range of flavours meatybubbles com Help keep your pet healthy and happy with our flavoured bubbles Use the included bubble wand to blow bubbles and watch your pet jump with joy Suitable for cats too We want to make millions of pets happy healthy all around the world with our Meaty Bubbles Apex Pet Products

Quick question be sure to slow down and allow them to smell the roses Teething troubles Just as with humans years of wear and tear means your dog may have more dental issues from missing teeth to tartar build up To keep your dog s teeth and gums healthy you need to brush them every day and if your dog isn t a fan start giving them dental treats As your dog gets older their teeth may become more sensitive which can make chewing kibble more difficult and even uncomfortable It is estimated that one in four older dogs have a tooth fracture many of which are the result of chewing objects that are too hard Switching to a soft food can help to alleviate your pet s oral discomfort when eating It s also important to get your dog s teeth checked regularly as they age to prevent and treat any dental concerns Don t skip vet visits Regular check ups are a vital part of health care at every stage of a dog s life and they become even more important as dogs get older As your dog ages their immune system becomes weaker which makes them more prone to all sorts of ailments Most vets recommend taking an older dog for regular check ups every six months helping them provide the best possible treatment for your dog P Calmness starts in the gut trillions of bacteria manufacture happy chemicals which continually send signals to the brain Some bacteria are better at producing happy chemicals whilst others make chemicals linked to anxiety stress inflammation and aggression Labrador Photo posed by models How do you keep clean with a female in season The scientists at Petbiome use a genomic sequencing test to identify the gut bacteria associated with imbalances plus highlight any dietary changes needed to increase happy chemical production The test also links biome imbalances to many common diseases including allergies arthritis and colitis Learn more www petbiome org SAVE 20 WITH CODE TODAY20 IN APRIL AND MAY The Lumina isn t just any tool it s a tool every dog sporting and pet family NEEDS JOE LAMONT Captain and Trainer Tails We Win Flyball Teams READERS ADVISE We asked our followers Becky Weetman Baby gates and covers on anything you don t want marked It s not for long I never encourage nappies pants because bitches generally keep themselves clean and putting pants on stops this and increases the risk of infection 16 Dogs Today April 2023 Patti Westmore This is what we did During the night I placed a fleece on our bed on top of where she usually settled and an old bed sheet underneath for when she joined us inside the bed This was her second season she s getting spayed soon and she kept herself clean My house is cream There were a couple of spots on the carpet and on the cream bedding but they came out with stain remover I swear by Rug Doctor s Oxy Power Stain Remover Recommended and used by The College of Animal Physiotherapy Official sponsors of Tails We Win Flyball Teams finalists CRUFTS 2023 help your dog maintain an active lifestyle Lumina red infrared and blue light phototherapy therapeutic treatment for injuries wounds and skin conditions complementary non invasive and drug free relieves pain and relaxes muscles tension from overuse injuries add to your weekly routine to keep your dog living life to the max Discover more at optimustherapytech com

Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Status anxiety American Bulldog English Bulldog and Olde English Bulldogge TV Vet Marc Abraham said in an interview that these dogs can be nightmares in the wrong hands and that very few people have the right hands However he added the issue is responsible ownership blaming the dog and banning the breed as we have already banned the Pit Bull would do absolutely no good Dog behaviourist Hannah Molloy of Amplified Behaviour agrees with this view ORGANISED CRIME Throughout 2022 and the beginning of 2023 there have been several high profile tragic deaths caused by dog attacks as well as numerous injuries Some have suggested adding more dogs to the list of breeds to the banned list of the Dangerous Dogs Act but is this truly the right approach T he UK has a status dog problem The Society for Companion Animals Studies defines status dogs as those that are encouraged by their owners to learn adopt aggressive behaviour and are used as weapons in fights or as tough looking status symbols In short they are large strong dogs who have been acquired by the absolute worst people to handle them those who want a tough dog to use more for clout than anything else They don t want a pet they don t want a companion they want to train potential weapons The portrait of your average status dog has changed throughout the decades German Shepherds were the go to tough dogs for a time then there were Dobermanns and Rottweilers all big strong dogs at risk of winding up in the worst possible hands Around the time a list of banned breeds was introduced with the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act DDA Pit Bull Terrier Fila Brasileiro Dogo Argentino and Japanese Tosa There was however a crystallisation of this portrait With most attention on the Pit Bull this dog or rather this type of dog was set to become and remain the ultimate status dog They were feared enough to be banned and that was precisely the kind of dog someone looking for tough status would want to own and train to become aggressive Even dogs who resembled the banned breeds are included in the DDA breed specific legislation targets any dog who looks a certain way regardless of what 20 Dogs Today April 2023 DNA is in the mix As a result dogs classed as banned types can easily be someone s beloved pet a lot of people do not realise their dog may fall into a banned type until their dog is seized as well as an animal bred and trained for aggression The law treats them and their owners precisely the same Over 30 years later despite thousands of family pets killed for no reason other than their looks the failure of this legislation couldn t be more glaringly obvious The breeding of these dogs has become a lucrative market and there is no shortage of Pit Bull types in the UK whether through unfortunate crossing or by design Remember a cross between a Staffie and a Labrador can very easily come out looking like a type and be persecuted for it and proving they have no Pit Bull DNA would not be considered proof enough to spare them it is all based solely on the dog s measurements That is how unscientific BSL is Since the list of banned breeds was introduced biting incidents have gone up According to NHS data there has been a 32 8 per cent growth in hospital admissions between 2011 and 2022 Between 2021 and 2022 there was a total of 8 819 admissions for dog bites Even taking into account the fact that the UK s dog population has grown by 9 7 per cent between 2017 and 2022 data shows that bite cases are growing at a faster rate than the dog population As cases grew so did concern and it didn t take long for authorities and the public to realise there is a new status dog similar to the Pit Bull but larger stronger and entirely legal to keep the American XL Bully More and more people looking for a status dog are turning to these dogs who are often bred for strength and trained to be aggressive AMERICAN SPIN OFF The American Bully breed developed as a natural extension of the American Pit Bull Terrier says the United Kennel Club The APBT has maintained a characteristic appearance and temperament for over 100 years As with any long standing breed several types evolved from the parent breed with one in particular taking on a specific build and structure that is so unique it was wise to recognise it as a different breed altogether That being the American Bully breed The American Bully breed was subtly influenced by the infusion of several other breeds which include the I feel that if the legislation didn t work for Pit Bulls I don t think it s going to work for XL Bullies she says It would simply push their breeding even further underground making it increasingly difficult to keep an eye on it and putting up a barrier between breeders and professional trainers Banning breeds was the wrong approach in 1991 and it is the wrong approach now People looking for a status dog can ignore the law or turn to other non banned breeds with the same features as we are already seeing with the shift to XL Bullies As canine behaviour consultant for the All party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group Apdawg Hannah has been gathering information and statistics for the Apdawg event The dog bite problem part 2 is it the dogs in Parliament on 21 March What she found reinforced her belief that breed bans will not solve the issue We have been working on gathering evidence about the entire dog bite problem to get a full picture she says This can be difficult due to different record keeping among various hospitals but we can tell that bites have tripled in the past 20 years across all breeds All dogs can bite it is interesting to note that the data between 2001 and 2021 shows no increase in deaths to match the increase in injuries I don t think DDA is the answer But with the upcoming event we re looking to understand the law the application and whether it has been misused This is a multifaceted issue Should we go for a dog licence for certain breeds It would be good but we would need to regulate dog trainers and behaviourists and regulate breeding there would be a lot to do Clearly with organised criminals involved in the breeding of status dogs police need to hit them in their wallets Currently any fine they may incur for breeding without a licence for example is too low they will simply factor it in as an expense in their business plan so to speak Higher fines proportional to the money these criminals make would also lead to more funds for further prosecutions The dogs are victims too The research also notes that the issue of dog biting is not a national or even regional issue it is a community issue with over a third of bites occurring in the 20 per cent most deprived communities in the country Also the vast majority of bites take place at home this adds up to 80 per cent of bites on adults and 91 per cent of bites on children A recent tragic case was that of Alice Stones a four year old girl killed by Banning breeds was the wrong approach in 1991 and it is the wrong approach now People looking for a status dog can ignore the law or turn to other non banned breeds with the same features as we are already seeing with the shift to XL Bullies The dog who was later put to sleep was described as not a banned breed Only 15 per cent of adults and 6 per cent of children are bitten in the streets Overall bite rates in children have shown no growth between 1998 and 2018 The bite rates have however tripled in adults with middle aged women as the fastest growing group Dog bite victims are more likely to be white than any other ethnic group There is more that can be done in specific geographical regions where this is happening most often Hannah says We need local solutions Plus the vast majority of bites happen at home any intervention or policy should keep that in mind There is another aspect to the issue of dogs trained specifically for aggression and intimidation Up to now we have spoken of the individuals who choose powerful dogs and train them to be aggressive for status however with so many bites occurring at home in deprived areas there is a chance some are acquiring these dogs for personal protection ATTACK MODE The subject of protection dogs is steeped in controversy for several reasons Firstly the industry is severely unregulated there is no body overseeing the kind of training these dogs receive in order to be marketed for personal protection Secondly there is reason for concern when dogs who have been quite literally trained to attack on command are left in the hands of members of the public again there is nothing in place to regulate their use When owners of these dogs lose control consequences can be dire In August 2021 a child was severely injured in a dog attack at a park in Pontypridd Wales The dog who attacked named Chief was a German Shepherd Dog who had been previously trained as a protection dog in Germany he had then been rehomed to a member of the public despite the fact the man had no experience with such dogs and did not know the German commands the dog had been trained to respond to 22 Dogs Today April 2023 And then there are the people who rather than turning to someone else to train their dog try to do everything by themselves teaching their dog to turn aggressive on cue and react to perceived threats in a misguided attempt to keep themselves and their loved ones safe Unfortunately this is likely to backfire DEADLY DIY Even when it does work the dog will be killed Hannah says It s something a lot of people seem to ignore when they make the decision to turn their pet into a DIY protection dog It s not like protection dogs get a different treatment by the law as a normal pet would If they bite someone even in your own home if they do the job they have been trained to do they will be put to sleep Intervention in the deprived areas highlighted in the research can be a starting point not only to tackle the problem of status dogs but also to make sure people no longer feel the need to turn to protection dogs in order to feel safe All this is set to be discussed at the Apdawg event in Parliament on 21 March Among those present will be Wayne David Labour MP for Caerphilly It was in his constituency that 10 year old Jack Lis was killed in a XL Bully dog attack on 8 November 2021 The incident resulted in two convictions that of the owner of the dog called Beast and that of the person in whose house the dog was staying They were sentenced to four and a half years in a young offender institution and three years imprisonment respectively Beast was killed by officers at the scene Commenting on the outcome of the court case Wayne David said The mother of Jack is understandably of the view that the sentences received by the two individuals were far too lenient I intend to voice her concerns and reinforce them and I will be demanding that the UK Government brings forward legislation to change and strengthen the law in this area I am of the view that a fundamental rethink of legislation regarding dangerous dogs is needed so there are no further tragedies P

come to me with concerns about their dog humping other dogs the cat furniture toys or human arms and legs which they find uncomfortable understandably so Unfortunately I also often hear complaints of these humping dogs being dominant to people or animals or trying to be the alpha in a relationship by engaging in this behaviour Sadly a quick Google search will typically offer dominance as the main reason for humping behaviours While the feelings and motivations for the behaviour will differ from dog to dog it is certainly not because your dog is trying to dominate you A second reason listed on Google for this behaviour is often the absence of sterilisation so most guardians rush to neuter their dogs when this happens and then are disappointed to find that it made no difference to their pet s behaviour which carries on unabated The reality is that humping is a very misunderstood behaviour by guardians and they may feel embarrassed when in the company of others who witness their dog engaging in this weirdly sexual behaviour As the behaviour is misunderstood the dog is sometimes reprimanded punished interrupted or laughed at which can make them feel worried and stressed for engaging in natural behaviour FIXED ACTION PATTERN So if it is not a sexual or dominant behaviour then what is it Humping can be what ethologists scientists and behaviour professionals call a fixed action pattern FAP which are innate behaviours These are behaviours that are common to all members of a species and require no learning An example is when a human baby yawns or sneezes no one taught the baby how to yawn or sneeze Yawning or sneezing among other instinctive behaviours are innate to humans and other species A fixed action pattern is a predictable series and stereotypical sequences of complex actions triggered by a cue and must be completed once started Humping is a normal behaviour FAP in dogs and other species and does not solely have to do with dominance or sex MYTH BUSTING There are various perceptions about this natural dog behaviour So let s explore what humping is not Humping is not Dogs wanting to dominate another dog cat your legs arms cushions or furniture imagine trying to dominate a cushion on the couch or a toy car Your dog wanting to be an alpha in the home and show you other dogs the cat or the family who is boss We control our dogs reproduction opportunities eating times food choices sleeping places and many other things It s not very likely that by one simple natural act they are signalling their intent of being dominant I doubt the resident cat will see it as an attempt to be dominated but rather as the dog just being rude and inconsiderate while she is trying to nap Be careful of your dog humping random dogs in a park that he does not know The unknown dog could become aggressive or scared If you see this happening call your dog leash him and redirect him to walk in another direction with you A behaviour only seen in unneutered dogs both entire and unneutered dogs can exhibit mounting behaviour A behaviour only seen in male dogs both male and female dogs can engage in this behaviour A behaviour only seen in younger dogs dogs of all ages from puppies to seniors can hump A behaviour to cause you embarrassment A behaviour to get back at you in any way HUMP FOR JOY Humping by male or female dogs of any age can be due to the following reasons among other things Happiness and excitement dogs may mount people when they are happy or excited and unsure how to express these heightened emotions Need for affiliation wanting the attention of their human another dog or the family cat Sexual rehearsal where humping is involved as a part of the sequence involved in reproductive behaviour The body language of the dog will indicate whether the act is sexual or affiliative in nature Burning off pent up energy Usually this happens when a dog is not receiving enough mental and physical stimulation and becomes over aroused or reactive He may attempt to reduce the intensity of those feelings of frustration or nervous energy This is similar to doing the zoomies which is an attempt to burn excess energy General stimulation Yippee something s happening Stress unease anxiety or a displacement behaviour fidget or fool response within the five F systems the humping behaviour reduces these negative feelings Playing dogs intermittently mount each other while playing A medical issue is present and the action brings relief Boredom frustration and or tiredness Ambivalence about a situation or a person another dog or the cat Bullying humping can also happen when one dog is trying to bully another IF YOU RE WORRIED If you are concerned about your dog s frequent humping behaviours consider the following Make a note of how many times a day this is happening and what happened just before and after the humping Take your dog for a medical check up Make sure all their emotional needs are met as it is possible that your dog is not receiving breed type and age appropriate daily mental and physical stimulation April 2023 Dogs Today 25

is unable to read the body language of the other dog cat or person being humped and hence does not know when to stop Instead redirect that energy to a toy that is thrown or tugged on a licky mat or chew instead of shouting at him to get off or stop it Do not reprimand your dog under any circumstances as it may further heighten his emotions Give him something mentally stimulating to do instead like a puzzle toy to harness that excess energy If the dogs are having turns and alternating this behaviour with other behaviours such as chasing tumbling and play bows then leave them be as both dogs may be enjoying a play session Just ensure that both dogs are having fun and one is not exhibiting any stress signals If your dog persists in this behaviour despite the other dog the cat or human giving him signals to stop you can use baby gates and other barriers to separate him for a while until he has calmed down Remember to give him a mental activity involving chewing licking or sniffing Words BERNARD BALE Photos Instagram chrisevans Call him Captain America if you wish or Ransom Drysdale from Knives Out Chris Evans is too easygoing to care what you call him but if you want to talk about rescue dogs you will have his undivided attention The Captain s Dog T hey say that dogs are man s best friend said Chris Evans Well my best friend is Dodger I don t know what I would do without him he is just the best friend anyone could ever ask for I have had other dogs all brilliant but Dodger is something else They all say that don t they But they don t all get the name of their dog tattooed on their bodies Next time you see Chris Evans ask him to show you and he will proudly reveal Dodger emblazoned on his chest That s how much he means to me Chris admitted I have a number of friends but I m not sure I would have their names tattooed on any part of me Dodger is different and even if we are apart he is still with me So where did they first meet At a rescue centre Chris revealed I had never been before and like I said I have had dogs almost all my life I was worried that I would go in there and want to give them all a 30 Dogs Today April 2023 home one look at those appealing eyes and I just melt I knew I wouldn t make a difference to any of them if I didn t go inside so I did Sure enough I melted and melted several times but then I saw Dodger and he saw me and well I was just amazed that he was there He was such a character and not too big or too small I felt we were just waiting to meet each other I am just so grateful that I took the plunge I am very keen on the whole rescue dog thing it is so terrible that dogs need to be rescued but they do and I would urge anyone thinking of getting a dog to at least think about giving a rescue dog a home Not everyone can and that s understood but if there is any chance at all go and take a look you won t regret it I haven t not for a minute Chris is of course one of our busiest actors I have been acting since I was 11 he revealed My sister started appearing in school plays and it seemed like fun to me so I did the same and I was bitten by the bug I have done stage as well as screen and things just fell into place for me I worked hard of course you don t achieve without effort HEROES VILLAINS Captain America has been good to me but I have enjoyed playing in all sorts of other movies and shows and I don t like to be the good guy all the time In Knives Out I was a bad guy and loved it I like a variety of work one time a superhero and the next minute the guy everyone hates Whatever I have been filming during the day when I go home I am always the good guy and get a lot of fuss from Dodger We were parted for 10 weeks once and when we met up again Dodger just went crazy and wouldn t stop giving me kisses He is like that he wears his heart on his sleeve Sure enough I melted and melted several times but then I saw Dodger and he saw me and well I was just amazed that he was there He was such a character and not too big or too small I felt we were just waiting to meet each other I am just so grateful that I took the plunge Chris always makes sure that Dodger has the best of everything He takes him to work as often as he can but if he can t Dodger has companions and never wants for anything He is not a fussy eater but I make sure he has the best I can give him Chris explained He lets you know what he wants I bought a gadget that I thought he might like It has buttons on it and they can learn to press one button for something to eat another for play and so on nothing too complicated Dodger quite took to it but I think he likes fooling me because sometimes when he has just eaten he will go and press the button for food His favourite button though is for play and that is just typical of him He is a very playful dog He is of mixed breeds so I just call him a dog I decided to groom him once including a haircut He wasn t too sure that it was a good idea and neither was I but I rarely turn down a challenge He was suspicious of me throughout the whole experience and I made sure he kept away from mirrors afterwards I took him to a professional groomer next time It wasn t that I did a terrible job but I didn t do a very good job either and I didn t want to hurt his feelings so I told him how great he looked I don t think he was convinced Dodger is not only popular at home he has quite a fan following I can t resist showing him off on social media said Chris He loves it and receives loads of fan tweets which of course I read to him well not all of them in case he gets ideas that he is really the star of the show SCENE STEALER He loves being the centre of attention and meeting new people and captivates everyone who gets to know him You never really know what he is going to do next He is well behaved but he has a crazy sense of fun I bought him a cuddly toy lion once that sang The Lion Sleeps Tonight I thought it would be fun to see his reaction When it began to sing he stopped trying to rip its head off and just stared at it for a moment Then he began to kind of howl but not in fear he was trying to join in Crazy dog Clearly Dodger is Chris s very best friend and they work together to highlight the plight of rescue dogs so perhaps we shall see Dodger in an acting role one day You never know he is unpredictable I wouldn t be at all surprised to find scripts dropping on the mat for him said Chris I hope he lets me tag along P April 2023 Dogs Today 31

Shhhhhhhh T F or alert barking or any barking that is a reaction to a trigger be that the dog next door neighbours in the garden cats chickens an animal on the TV someone walking past the window birds flying overhead in the garden or traffic on your walk you can play Click the Trigger You ll need a clicker or you can use a verbal marker such as Yes a pot of treats and your dog on a lead You are going to need him to want to eat so have something delicious and smelly such as cooked liver or hot dog sausage You may want to do a couple of sessions of simple clicker training first so he knows the game He ll need to be under threshold so position yourselves close enough to the trigger so that he can see or hear it but far enough away so that he is unlikely to react Using traffic as an example trigger the ideal training spot would be on a footpath or a very quiet road that leads to a minor road at 32 Dogs Today April 2023 Reasons for excessive barking and how to fix it Photo by Tim Rose www timrosephotography co uk Posed by models his month we look at barking All dogs do it apart from yodeling Basenjis it s an essential part of canine communication but sometimes it can be excessive and unwanted upsetting the neighbours your eardrums and your sanity These articles from the fabulous Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions book will teach you how to understand what your dog is communicating to you and how best to manage it Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions is now available as an audiobook available from Kobo and Audiobooks at 9 99 and coming soon to Amazon and Google Play The print and e books are available on Amazon Words SALLY BRADBURY Dogs bark for many reasons they might be scared surprised alerted happy excited sad lonely or may be communicating another emotional state a T Junction or a quiet corner of a supermarket car park The traffic needs to be going across your view from left to right or right to left not coming towards you Ideally it should be just one vehicle at a time with at least a few seconds between them but preferably more If your dog is barking or lunging and trying to chase vehicles you need to stay away from roads for now and walk him in traffic free places This may mean driving somewhere for exercise but will ensure that he isn t practising the behaviour Find the distance where he can see a car and not react other than noticing it You need him on a lead some small yummy treats and your clicker STAGE ONE Watch your dog s body language you are looking for the slightest ear prick When he notices a car you are going to click If you have put in the groundwork with the clicker if he knows there are yummy treats on offer and if you are far enough away from the traffic then he will turn back to you for the treat Step back if that makes it easier for him to turn to you and then step forward for the next one Repeat repeat repeat He notices the car you click he gets a treat STAGE TWO At some point you are going to be slow with the click and he is going to see a car turn back to you and say Oi You forgot to click Click and treat that Now you know he has got it and we can move to stage two See a car turn back to you and get a click and a treat You will need lots of sessions in lots of locations Always ensure that he remains below his threshold but gradually increase criteria Get closer to the road and practise in various locations until he can walk along the road and get the occasional reinforcement for not wanting to chase or bark at the traffic TV TRIGGER Barking at the TV is another good example and this is one of the easiest triggers to control Sit with him on lead as far away from the TV as you can get If necessary move the television opposite a doorway and sit outside the room looking in towards it Turn the volume down to zero and use a recorded programme so you know when to expect to see the animals or whatever will usually trigger the barking If he is triggered by the sound of a particular advert or theme tune then just lower the volume rather than muting it completely Give him one or two treats before turning on the TV to increase his motivation to work with you Then as soon as he sees an animal on the TV click or say your marker word and treat If he won t take his eyes from the screen hit the pause button and see what happens Your aim is for him to see something on the TV that he would normally bark at but instead to turn to you for a treat You ll need to experiment a bit If you click and he still barks he still gets the treat A click is always a promise of a reward Once you can sit far away from the TV and he can see an animal and immediately turn to you and say I saw that dog cat meerkat treat please then you very gradually up the ante Add some volume move closer If it goes wrong at any time go back two stages and get that stage perfect again Meanwhile you ll need to avoid all instances of letting him practise the behaviour you are trying to eliminate Otherwise it will take a long time to make any progress You may have to make sacrifices and read instead of watching TV or watch when he isn t in the room DOG NEXT DOOR You can use the same method for anything that triggers barking If it s a dog on the other side of the fence then sit away from the fence with him Watch him closely click and treat when his ears prick at hearing Teaching a dog to bark on cue so you can teach a quiet is often suggested but not something we would recommend Rewarding a dog for stopping an unwanted behaviour sounds fine in theory but in practice the dog must do the behaviour first in order to stop It s always best to reward the absence of the barking something You may have to start indoors with the door open or as far from the fence as you can be in the garden Don t let him spend time in the garden alone take him out on lead unless you have an arrangement with the neighbours and your dogs on a rota As you progress you can lengthen the lead so he has to return to you for the treat after hearing seeing the trigger Eventually he can be off lead and play training games with you instead of barking at the dog next door THE WORLD OUTSIDE For people dogs wildlife or anything passing the house when your dog is indoors you can work in a similar way If it s noises then sit on the far side of the front room If it s visual then be in a position where he can see out but you can retreat if needed Meanwhile use blinds or window film or close the door to that room when you are not in there Barking at birds in flight or squirrels in the garden can also April 2023 It s all in the timing Find a way to throw the ball before he barks be dealt with by playing click the trigger Work with your dog outdoors but near the door so you can retreat indoors if necessary ME ME ME Attention seeking barking is best resolved by giving the dog attention before he has to ask for it Contrary to popular belief ignoring a dog that has a genuine need just makes them try harder It s very frustrating and stressful for a dog that is trying to communicate with you Make sure his needs are met If he isn t hungry has water doesn t need to go out for a pee has had a walk then he may simply need your attention just as a toddler would If he s persistently barking for attention it may be necessary to assess your dog s routine Does he have enough enrichment in his daily routine Is he able to relax when everyone else is If your dog barks when you re trying to eat when you sit down to eat have a bowl of treats available for him and a strategically placed bed by your feet under the table or across the room Before he barks toss a treat on to his bed for him and continue to do this at a pace that keeps him on his bed and not barking If there are two of you then it would be a good idea to eat in shifts so that one person can concentrate on teaching him to stay on his bed while you eat This will only be necessary in the beginning TWO SECOND TIME OUT This is the only time out that we recommend Anything longer and learning doesn t happen it s just punishment Let s use playing ball as a popular example The dog barks in excitement as he wants the ball thrown If you throw the ball he s learning to bark If you don t throw the ball he s getting frustrated Eventually you either throw the ball or he just tries harder and harder because barking always works It s all in the timing Find a way to throw the ball before he barks You could drop the ball on the floor while his lead is still on then remove the lead and move the ball with your toe His head is down and he doesn t bark You could then drop some food on the floor As he finishes the food throw the ball If he brings the ball back throw it again immediately before he barks Not possible Throw a second ball while the first one is still in his mouth Continue in this fashion getting the ball to him so quickly that he just doesn t bark To teach him not to bark at all start to pause slightly before throwing the ball just a nanosecond If he doesn t bark throw the ball If he barks step away turn around and reset for two seconds max Throw the ball if the barking has stopped This delays the reward and says to the dog You got it wrong try again Note we don t recommend lots of ball throwing but it s an easy example to use for attentionseeking barking P Words EMMA JUDSON Prevention of unwanted barking Dogs bark for a reason Probably several reasons Until you find that reason and eliminate it it will continue U sing punishment may have a slight short term effect It won t work long term because punishment merely suppresses a behaviour It does not actually 34 Dogs Today April 2023 address the root cause so the behaviour will come back This is a bit like sticking a big plaster on a festering wound Sure you can t see the wound any more but it s still there It isn t going to get better just because the plaster is hiding it It is only going to get worse Dogs bark to communicate They may want to tell you they heard something or to tell the thing

Page 19

they heard to go away They may bark because barking is inherently enjoyable to do because they are overexcited or stressed or because they are fearful They may possibly bark for several of these reasons combined Boredom Barking is fun Make sure your dogs are getting the physical and mental exercise they need If they have no issues with going for walks on a lead then take them for a couple of walks a day They can also play games solve puzzles eat food from toys such as Kongs search for their scattered food and of course do training sessions with you Make sure that the activities you do are not all very high energy whizzy things Limit activities like going for walks where they yell at everything they see chasing a ball endlessly or hurtling around with other dogs A little bit of those things is fine but a lot of it is just going to create considerable stress Like kids at a fairground dogs get wound up and can t unwind Try to organise your daily routine so that any high energy stuff is followed by calming stuff For 36 Dogs Today April 2023 example a clicker training session can be quite an exciting activity so follow it up with a calming activity like sniffing outdoors for scattered kibble Barking at sounds This is best addressed by counterconditioning Put simply click or mark and treat any sound you hear Do not wait for the dogs to bark do not tell them to be quiet just pair the sound with a highvalue reward such as a little cube of cheese or sausage You will need to walk around for a week or two with a full treat pouch whenever you are home Alternatively you could keep treats in pots or dishes in every room out of your dog s reach so that when you hear a sound you can say Yes and grab them all a goodie Over time this teaches them that sounds sights treats and any fearful or reactive desire to bark fades away Excited barking Excited barking includes barking at the postal delivery or the doorbell and can be dealt with systematically Start by disconnecting the doorbell and putting a note with your phone number on the door asking folk to phone you rather than knock If your dog is reacting to post coming through the letterbox replace it with an external box Then you have the space you need to reteach your dogs that for example the sound of the doorbell means you will get a treat if you sit or go to your bed for a treat You can get a new doorbell so that it has a brand new sound There are wireless options with a remote bell push which means that you will be able to activate the doorbell yourself from indoors Effectively the sound is taught as a cue to do something just as the word sit means park your butt It takes a while particularly with multiple dogs but it can be done If you find the sound of the postal delivery or a visitor coming through a gate sets your dog off you can counter condition this in the same way as scary sounds Pair the sound with the reward until their automatic reaction is not to bark but to look at you for their reward Doing the things outlined above should really help to reduce the barking It s important to avoid shouting at them it just sounds as if you are joining in It s also really important to note that when you are counterconditioning the dogs get a treat when you hear the sound The reward is not dependent on them behaving well or keeping quiet They will start to keep quiet as their need to bark reduces Very often people tell me that counter conditioning doesn t work What I then see is people hearing a sound and then waiting for the dog to make a mistake to bark and then telling the dog to be quiet That isn t counterconditioning Even if you hear a sound and your dogs bark before you can give them a treat you still need to treat them You will not be rewarding bad behaviour by doing so Frankly even if they did then learn to bark to get a treat that is far more easily resolved than barking out of fear or anxiety P Join our exclusive Sub Club With newsagents and supermarkets Please limit your response to 100 words Ashley Kemp Yes in theory as I feel it would keep many pets from being put to sleep But in practice there would need to be changes first such as price caps and better coverage options for pre existing conditions Lisa Wright Pet insurance can also make your pet an RGU revenuegenerating unit for veterinary practices There are numerous procedures that are prescribed purely to generate income from unscrupulous vets The horse world is rampant with owners pushing the limits on their policies as vets recommend further and further investigations and treatments that are wholly unnecessary and sometimes morally wrong Becky Walton I have seen too many sick dogs put to sleep or surrendered because the owners couldn t afford vet care In my experience it was mostly people who assumed they would have no problem covering vet bills until they found themselves looking at eye watering ones they could not cover With this price crisis for everything it can only get worse Insurance is far from perfect but it seems the lesser evil Caroline Bebbington Pet insurance has become ruinously expensive but so has veterinary treatment because most practices appear to be owned by huge private equity companies that expect huge profits and we are now stuck in a perpetual circle of insurance covering huge vet bills so premiums go up and more exclusions are added to your policy the vet practices hike prices because the insurance pays out and basic care for your pet becomes out of reach for most I cancelled the insurance as even though I had never even claimed on one policy every year it was increased above and beyond what was expected Should basic pet insurance be mandatory for dog owners Kirsty Simms Absolutely not We had it until they doubled it and added a bit more after four years and no claims They wanted 180 per month I think introducing public liability insurance for dogs may be a better option but insurance companies will price out the large breeds 38 Dogs Today April 2023 Wyatt Jones Only if unreasonable price hikes are forbidden first after that happens then yes Julia Carr All mine are insured from start to finish but everyone s needs are different Jacqui Glover Ours aren t insured We have savings for them and it gives us more freedom with decisions I also have a personal issue with funding corporations as less of your money goes to those individuals who provide the service the veterinary team That said I do feel liability insurance should be mandatory and feel that would if enforced address a wider scope of issues with animal cruelty neglect dog attacks etc And yes all mine have this insurance Tracey Burton Third party insurance should be mandatory If an owner has a way to cover an unexpected bill credit card or savings then all well and good If there is absolutely no way an owner would be able to afford a vet bill and they have no insurance then how will the pet get the treatment it needs Being able to provide for your pet is part of being a responsible owner Jo Marshall Absolutely not Insurance companies have far too many clauses and exclusions to get out of paying particularly if you have an older dog so that could discourage people from taking on older rescues Sometimes the policy on offer for the cost just isn t worth the paper it s written on If they were to make pet insurance mandatory the whole industry would need a shake up to make it more like car insurance so they are obliged to pay out for virtually anything The other issue is the popularity of pet insurance is allowing the greedy corporate suits who take over vet practices to massively inflate prices for everybody because for most people the insurance will pay This hikes the cost of the insurance and the cycle starts again There was also an article in a national newspaper some years ago saying pet insurance companies were considering limiting which specialists their clients could go to because of the cost Sarah Jane Bird Being able to provide for your pet in an emergency is essential to owning a pet but insurance shouldn t be mandatory because sometimes it s more cost effective to pay when needed As long as you can and will provide that s what matters Emma Lee There s a reason insurance companies are some of the richest businesses in the world Pearl Jolliffe Our renewal for our 14 yearold Daxi this year is 983 pounds We also have a 12 year old Daxi so the yearly insurance comes to almost 2 000 pounds We are retired and shocked by this For the first time since we ve had them we cannot afford to renew We are worried about it and we will put money into an account for vet fees but it may not cover them If insurance became compulsory what would we do Charlotte Stafford Yes and no If yes then it needs to be capped We insured my GSD until he was nine Then they wanted 321 per month plus added a bunch of excesses etc Why Because he had X rays once a year for his arthritis and we claimed 60 every three months for his medication Every other company wanted large sums had a huge excess and wanted to exclude his hips paws spine legs and even stomach due to having one nasty bug He s now 12 what would we be paying now If people were told they d have to pay a compulsory few hundred per month I can see many dogs being rehomed or put down We are fortunate to have the ability to find funds if necessary for a one off cost and because my dog is very old now and hates the vet if he s at the stage of life where there s a decrease in his quality of life such as huge injury cancer that would bring about the ultimate question It d be scarier if he was much younger and more prone to accidents from being energetic We began his insurance at three years old and paid 30 odd We got to eight and then we were paying 220 per month and barely claimed The further increase was just too far So it s all very personal and individual I d rather have him insured though and would be happy for it to be compulsory if they didn t see fit to charge the cost of a small mortgage April 2023 Dogs Today 39

Six of the best Great Debate Angharad Richards Insurance is so expensive and there are lots of loopholes so insurers don t have to pay out I have accident only insurance for my dog as I can t afford procedure and our dog is doing well now Without it we simply could not have afforded the surgery needed to give her an even acceptable quality of life and would have had to put her to sleep at just five years of age Simon Hutchinson I don t think it should be mandatory to have insurance but I do think that the costs for vet treatment in the UK are so high because they know that most people depending on the issue would use their insurance if they had it We ve lived in eastern Europe for six years now There isn t any pet insurance here and whenever my wife goes back to the UK she takes Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI In our August 2019 issue we reported on the Dutch government s decision on the breeding of brachycephalic dogs Now they re looking to go one banning their ownership altogether to enforce a ban step further The message must be clear purchasing these animals is irresponsible results in serious harm to welfare and will soon no longer be allowed Doubling down Dutch S ome could say that this ban has been almost a decade in the making It was 2014 when the Netherlands first passed legislation banning the breeding of dogs whose extreme features put their health and quality of life at risk however for the five years that followed this ban was on paper only It was only in 2019 that the Dutch government decided to actually enforce the law and crack down on the breeding of brachycephalic dogs The new criteria on which the breeding ban would be enforced was based on a traffic light system going from red to green Any dog with a snout shorter than a third of the skull could not be bred from unsurprisingly this encompassed the vast majority of flat faced dogs Following the announcement the Dutch Kennel Club Raad van Beheer suggested an alternative breeding supervision plan When Dutch government officials responded that the plan would not be accepted and that the criteria would not change the Raad van Beheer ended registrations for 12 breeds including Pugs Boston Terriers Shih Tzus Bulldogs French Bulldogs Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Affenpinschers Animal welfare groups across Europe as well as in the UK welcomed the decision However some had doubts over whether the choice to ban the breeding of brachycephalic dogs would have the desired effect We don t agree that a simple ban on brachycephalic breeds is 50 Dogs Today April 2023 the solution to this complex issue Bill Lambert head of health and welfare at the Kennel Club said at the time We re concerned that this absolute approach could further fuel the ongoing crisis of irresponsible breeders illegal puppy smuggling and uninformed puppy buyers While the Dutch model has inspired action elsewhere in Norway for example the Oslo District Court ruled in 2022 that the breeding of the Bulldog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a violation of the Norwegian Animal Welfare Act due to the severe health issues that affect the breeds the concern expressed by Bill Lambert was not a baseless one As is the case in Britain with earcropped dogs a simple ban doesn t guarantee that those who are set to have a dog who looks a certain way will not resort to loopholes such as legally importing a cropped dog from outside the UK or cropping it in secret to then claim the operation was performed abroad CLOSING LOOPHOLES However there are ways to close these loopholes For the issue of cropped dogs in the UK there is a planned ban on the import of earcropped dogs among the provisions of the Kept Animals Bill which is at the time of writing still stuck in parliament awaiting its third reading in the House of Commons For the issue of brachycephalic dogs being imported to the Netherlands the Dutch government has now announced its plan a complete ban on the ownership of these dogs The deformed nose abnormal skull shape and often stocky physique cause serious health problems for life It has long been forbidden to breed animals that suffer from their appearance but buying and importing these animals was still possible The announced ban on keeping animals puts an end to that At the end of January 2023 Piet Adema Dutch minister of agriculture nature and food quality announced that two bans are being considered one on the keeping of pets with harmful external characteristics and one on their display The first ban that on keeping animals would automatically mean an end to their trade and import as well IRONING OUT DETAILS CRUELTY FREE This subject affects me not only as a minister but also as a person Piet Adema said We make life miserable for innocent animals purely because we think they are beautiful and cute That is why today we are taking a big step towards a Netherlands where no pet has to suffer from his or her appearance The keeping and display bans with which I want to achieve this will require a lot of time to be carefully worked out They are a complex pursuit but also a right pursuit This ban would not only affect brachycephalic dog breeds it would include any animal with characteristics that can be objectively determined to cause permanent suffering such as Scottish Fold cats The Scottish Fold s distinctive ears are the result of a gene that affects the animal s cartilage weakening it This is what causes the ears to fold forward under their own weight but it also affects all joints making these cats likely to develop painful arthritis early in life and greatly impacting their quality of life The Dutch government is now considering a list of banned characteristics that would cause permanent suffering and would therefore be banned in pets at the moment they are focusing on dogs and cats as they are the most commonly kept pets That list will start small but will be further expanded on the basis of further research into harmful characteristics that can be objectively determined in the individual animal a statement reads Seeing a certain type of pet frequently or prominently increases demand for it To reduce the demand for pets with harmful external features LNV Ministry of Agriculture Nature and Food Quality is working on a display ban This is a ban on showing pets with harmful external characteristics for example in commercials advertisements and on social media The role of celebrities and influencers is also to be considered Both a keeping ban and a display ban are complex and raise many questions How do we objectively demonstrate when an animal suffers from its appearance How do we handle the freedoms of social media with care How do we ensure proper enforcement These issues will take time to work out carefully But we want to inform people that this is coming right away especially people who are considering bringing a new pet in their home OWNERSHIP BAN Dutch animal welfare organisation Dier Recht has welcomed the announcement as fantastic news For years we have been campaigning for strict legislation to end the severe suffering of overbred pets said Kelly Kessen a vet and member of Dier Recht Short muzzled dogs are not cute but pitiful These animals have been deliberately bred for their extreme external characteristics How the Netherlands will enact these bans is yet to be seen A ban on sharing your pet s photo on social media seems somewhat far fetched with the Dutch government readily admitting that this aspect will need careful consideration As for the ban on ownership which is probably the most significant of the two it will not result in nightmare scenarios in which pets are forcibly taken away from their homes people who already own dogs or cats with banned features are to be allowed to keep them until the end of their lives In the case of someone caught with an illegally acquired pet after the ban is enacted the Dutch government has yet to elaborate what consequences there may be for the owner hopefully no one in their right mind will think to punish the pet for it It also remains to be seen whether rescue dogs for example those abandoned by the previous legal owner and in need of a new home will make an exception The message must be clear purchasing these animals is irresponsible results in serious harm to welfare and will soon no longer be allowed a statement by the Dutch government reads We also hope that this will further fuel the social debate what do we as a country consider normal in terms of animal welfare P Postbag Your news views CAPPING PRICES I have only just read the article debating the capping of a price to issue a health certificate to take your pet abroad The charge of anything between 99 300 is outrageous as it takes a vet less than 10 minutes to produce one I have been in the presence of a vet completing the required form Vets do not charge this amount for a 30 minute consultation in their practice so why are they allowed to charge this ridiculously high price My own vet thinks the pricing and the whole need for a health certificate is unnecessary as the pet passport was perfectly adequate and contained the same information as what is on the health certificate anyway Why change a perfectly good system just because the UK decided to leave the EU The key thing here is to ensure that all dogs have been rabies vaccinated microchipped and worm treated which can be shown easily on a piece of paper with a vet signatory rubber stamp Why the need for two or three A4 sheets I was at my own vet recently when the vet spent over 20 minutes pounding away on their computer writing up the notes of what we were discussing along with diagnosis etc My consultation was booked for 10 minutes and yet I was there for nearly 40 minutes I wasn t charged for this additional 20 minutes of their time to complete their notes so why are they charging us extortionate amounts for producing a health certificate in less than 10 minutes Although I still find it perplexing that we couldn t just continue to use pet passports if we really need a health certificate surely for 10 minutes of a vet s time we should be looking at a maximum of 30 for one dog and then an additional 5 for each dog on top of that as the only information needed to add an additional dog is the microchip number rabies vaccination date and deworming date all of which takes but a few minutes Gina Field Get in touch We love to hear your news and views and see photos of your 52 Dogs Today April 2023 Award winning 5 star park Spa lodges include private hot tubs w Onsite restaurant and take away w w dogs Email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk Write to us at Dogs Today The Old Print House 62 High Street Chobham Surrey GU24 8AA Indoor pool spa and gym Cycle hire mini golf tennis and woodland walks w Huge indoor soft play centre and outdoor adventure playground w w Perfect for couples and families w Set in a stunning woodland location near Chatsworth House w Join the debate Voice your opinions on news stories and other topics on our Dogs Today Magazine Facebook page or through our website www dogstoday magazine co uk SHOCKING DISCRIMINATION I was absolutely stunned to read about the treatment that Angharad Paget Jones and her guide dog had to endure at a Premier Inn February 2023 issue It takes a special kind of callousness to throw out a blind woman and her guide dog and on Bonfire Night too with fireworks going off everywhere I have heard of many appalling cases of service providers refusing to recognise assistance dogs as such but in most instances I could assume it was out of sheer ignorance because many are not aware of the incredible array of conditions dogs can be trained to help us with I found this case egregious because as you pointed out a guide dog is the most recognisable kind of assistance dog that there is and she had his Guide Dogs booklet too If even that is not enough to protect someone from discrimination what is Police absolutely should have intervened Pet Friendly Lodges in the Derbyshire Peak District Shocking behaviour I hope Ms Paget Jones gets a big settlement out of this Linda Appleton To find out more and to book online visit www darwinforest co uk

For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST Confessions of a dogaholic T here was a time when I dreamed big I imagined Dogs Today could maybe one day have an American edition So when Dr Ian Dunbar mentioned that the US Association of Pet Dog Trainers was having its first ever convention in Florida I figured we had to attend The logistics of getting a chunk of magazines over there was interesting but we did it Beardie Sally was packed off to stay with my parents and I took off for a very brief transatlantic jaunt Ian knew everyone of course and he was really kind introducing me to everyone Meeting the man who invented the Kong was amazing and hearing his story first hand priceless He said his young Bull Terrier was a chewing machine and had even tried gnawing at the tyres of his owner s precious motorbike It was a lightbulb moment I think it was Ian who suggested you could stuff these distinctive toys to make them even more irresistible The rest is doggie history MARGINAL EFFECT 66 Dogs Today April 2023 100 2020 WINNER Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 UK REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR the organisers had everything they needed and when he sat behind me he just couldn t believe what he saw on my notepad It turned out he owned the hotel complex and the local radio station and pretty much everything else But more importantly he had just ordered a Bearded Collie puppy from the UK And here s where it gets crazy it turns out the pup was sired by a dog I had bred Champion Dearbolt Hooray Henry a beautiful dog who was Sally s uncle What a ridiculously small world Stops dogs pulling on the lead and gives you back control Life Changing products for you and your dog 9 TIMES WINNER OF Product I can t live without WHIRLWIND BREAK Charles insisted my brief stay in Florida must be action packed and his Beardie credentials became obvious when he drove up in a car with the number plate Beardie 1 His first decision was that I should be moved out of the hotel which I thought was gorgeous but the house on Daytona Beach was spectacular Every evening until the flight home was filled with Beardie talk One night we even went to a themed dinner called Arabian Nights Was I dreaming I did still hang out with all the behaviour folk during the day and we even ran an exit poll as to which speaker people would most like to go out to dinner with The winner was Dr Roger Abrantes and Ian said the voting must have been rigged In case you think I m the luckiest girl in the world you re not wrong We narrowly dodged a hurricane and it felt like the Daytona Beach house might take off and fly us back to Heathrow We never did get that American edition of Dogs Today off the ground Maybe next year P NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT AWARgDCoEllDar Best Do r 2020 21 UK re tu c fa u n a M tive Dog Most Innova cturers Collar Manufa 2019 Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK The first day of the conference I had my pen and notepad in hand listening to the speakers and even though it was brilliant jet lag began dragging my eyelids down So to keep myself from dropping off I did what I often do I doodled Bearded Collies in the margins of my notebook It did the trick and I still managed to squeeze in some words At the break I wanted to fill up on coffee but I felt a tap on my shoulder from the row behind Were you drawing Bearded Collies I had been caught The very tall American chap apologised for asking He said it was fate we d been sat so close to each other as the room was packed full of dog behaviour supergeeks from all over the world Charles Namey said he d only popped in for a moment to check Beardie doodle Global Also available Collars Non Slip Leads and Gripper Training Leads offering added security and confidence throughout the winter months Endorsed by Dr David Sands BSc PhD CFBA Fellow of the Canine Feline Behaviour Association Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk Winners 2013 2022 Dogmatic UK Ltd is on Facebook Matching accessories in a selection of colours with high quality workmanship and ttings
