Words CLAIRE HORTON BUSSEY Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK Full circle The race is on There would be some karmic closure if Hope Rescue were to secure a ban The charity s very existence and its name come from one of Greyhound racing s victims O Campaigns to ban Greyhound racing are gaining momentum Which country will be the first to the finish line England Scotland or Wales A nimal welfare has seen hugely successful campaigns recently where pet lovers have joined together and pushed for change If you use social media you can t fail to have seen the petitions that have been shared the protest invitations and calls to write to your MP about a raft of pet related issues Lucy s Law Finn s Law pet theft reform ear cropping animal sentience fireworks support for reform has never been higher But the one area that defies this trend is Greyhound racing A recent YouGov poll commissioned by the charity Hope Rescue found that 45 supported a ban of Greyhound racing 17 opposed a ban and 38 were unsure That s a lot of undecided people Greyhound racing is under the radar explains Vanessa Waddon the transformation manager of Hope Rescue It s a niche area unless you re a sighthound owner and are aware of the cruelty of racing many people just don t know about it Even within the dog world it s something that has usually been left to Greyhound rescues who quietly pick up the pieces We need to reframe it for the general public to stress that these are dogs not just Greyhounds who for some 6 Dogs Today April 2022 reason are deemed less worthy of our compassion and outrage at their treatment There have long been calls for change with governments formerly opting for self regulation within the industry But now there is a real push for an outright ban In Wales there are plans to turn an unlicensed track into a GBGB Greyhound Board of Great Britain track The GBGB supports the track becoming licensed saying this would mean it would have to abide by our Rules of Racing and meet our strict welfare standards but campaigners say the expansion will mean more racing and more injuries ALL EYES ON WALES Vanessa says There is cross party political support in the Senedd Regulation hasn t worked in the rest of the UK We ve worked with the independent track in Wales and the clear links with the regulated sector show regulation isn t working Attendance at Greyhound tracks is declining but waiting for it to slowly phase out is not an option Vanessa says because the money that is made in racing is in live streamed racing with 99 per cent of British Greyhound bets being placed online or in betting offices Many dogs are needed to provide these hours of racing with owners paid around 50 as an appearance fee to race a dog regardless of how it fares The only way to stop deaths and injuries is to ban it outright the foundation of any animal welfare strategy is that prevention is better than cure Vanessa says Rescues are under so much pressure post pandemic already let alone when dealing with an industry that creates a surplus of over 6 000 dogs needing rescuing in Great Britain every year Hope s petition to the Senedd to ban Greyhound racing in Wales closed on 1 March with 35 101 signatures far in excess of the 10 000 needed to be considered for a debate Together with Greyhound Rescue Wales and Forever Hounds Trust Hope met members of the Petitions n 2 May 2004 a walker found a Greyhound barely alive lying on rubbish on the side of a mountain in south Wales It had a hole in its forehead and its ears had been cut off The poor creature was rescued and later humanely destroyed and the case caused uproar Vanessa was working a couple of doors down from the court in Blackwood Greyhound Rescue Wales had called for protestors to meet outside the court and Vanessa had been so moved by Last Hope s treatment she attended the protest In November 2004 Andrew Gough was found guilty of ill treating the dog in a botched attempt to disguise his identity removing the ears that had tattoo identification on them A groundsman at a Greyhound racing track Gough had offered to humanely put down the dog called Last Hope for 10 He said he d then bury the dog in lime on a farm but instead left the badly mutilated dog on a mountainside A vet thought the head wound had been caused by a bolt gun that had not been properly fired At the protest outside court Vanessa got talking to Alan Thomas from Greyhound Rescue Wales became involved in finding homes for rescue and pound dogs and the rest is history The charity was named after Last Hope and now has come full circle with the chance to ban Greyhound racing in Wales April 2022 Dogs Today 7

GBGB response Photo by Tim Rose www timrosephotography co uk M ark Bird chief executive of the Great Board of Great Britain GBGB the regulator of licensed Greyhound racing in Great Britain said Welfare is absolutely paramount in licensed Greyhound racing and everyone within the sport is committed to upholding the very highest standards In doing so we are pleased to have the support of government who have commended the progress we have made in safeguarding the welfare of our Greyhounds What is often overlooked by those who would like to see racing banned is that the protection racing Greyhounds receive goes far beyond what is afforded to pet dogs in the UK As regulator of the sport we closely monitor the welfare of all GBGB registered Greyhounds and are prepared to take the strongest action if evidence of mistreatment is ever found Through our Rules of Racing we seek to promote and protect the health and safety of racing Greyhounds throughout their careers and ensure they are responsibly homed upon retirement For example a vet is present at every track to inspect the health of each Greyhound before and after racing and no Greyhound will race if the vet has any concerns at all We are very clear what conditions Greyhounds must be kept in when at the track at their residential kennels and when being transported To ensure these requirements are met our licensed trainers are regularly inspected by our stipendiary stewards vets and receive an annual inspection from independent auditors We can never be complacent about welfare and through our Greyhound Commitment we seek to continuously drive standards forward Most recently we have launched our Greyhound Retirement Scheme which seeks to ensure the financial costs of homing a Greyhound upon retirement are met before their racing career even begins In just under 18 months over 2million has been paid out benefitting over 5 000 Greyhounds As part of the scheme we work with 125 approved homing centres whose teams do fantastic work in finding loving forever homes for our retired athletes To further our welfare work we will shortly be launching our new holistic welfare strategy A Good Life for Every Greyhound which will ensure that British racing continues to lead the way in greyhound welfare 8 Dogs Today April 2022 Committee on the Senedd steps to hand in the petition The committee considered the petition and has agreed to conduct evidence sessions followed by a Senedd debate We are delighted with this outcome and look forward to submitting our evidence says Vanessa Thank you to every single dog lover who signed the petition and all the organisations and rescues that shared it too We also couldn t have got this far without the incredible support of Luke Fletcher AS MS and Jane Dodds AS MS plus all the other Members of the Senedd who have supported the campaign Is an outright ban likely Vanessa thinks there s no reason why it can t be and is hopeful the date of the debate will be soon A ban is definitely achievable with just one track in Wales the economic impact would be minimal and rescues would work together to help the displaced Greyhounds It would set the bar for all UK nations to phase out racing It s so important MINORITY REPORT If an outright ban sounds unlikely you might be surprised to hear that actually the UK is very much in the minority when it comes to Greyhound racing There are only six countries in the world that have a commercial industry around the sport with regulation gambling laws formal tracks trade association etc In the States Grey2K USA has been a key player in reform The non profit organisation works to pass stronger Greyhound protection laws and to end the cruelty of dog racing nationally and internationally while promoting the rescue and adoption of Greyhounds across the globe Since its formation in 2001 44 American tracks have closed there s been a 76 decline in gambling on dog racing and 18 major laws have passed to protect Greyhounds In fact Greyhound racing is now banned in the vast majority of America It is operational in only three states West Virginia Arkansas and Iowa Grey2K was also instrumental in closing China s only legal dog track the Canidrome in 2018 and now has England in its sights The End Greyhound Cruelty campaign which is affiliated to Grey2K USA Worldwide says it acknowledges the likelihood that this bloodsport will soon be outlawed in the UK but is urging policymakers to enact stronger regulations on the industry in the mean time with more short term measures designed to ensure British racing Greyhounds are protected from the systemic welfare failures of the industry It wants A five per cent levy to be paid by all bookmakers profiting from dog racing An end to GBGB self regulation with independent government appointed representatives on the board and greater transparency of data Full life tracking for all Greyhounds racing in the UK The prohibition of the construction of new racing tracks and the re licensing of old tracks throughout the UK Acknowledgement of the 104 883 signatories of a UK petition to ban dog racing submitted to parliament Thousands of dogs have died from neglect maltreatment and being treated as commodities as a result of racing while the industry invests more on enhancing its reputation It says Thousands of dogs have died from neglect maltreatment and being treated as commodities as a result of racing while the industry invests more on enhancing its reputation A resurgence of investment in the bloodsport fuelled almost entirely by online gambling means the time for action is now An outright ban in England is more of a challenge than in Wales and Scotland because of the number of tracks and dogs involved but End Greyhound Cruelty hopes these tighter regulations and a stop to any expansion of the sport are interim measures until a full ban can be achieved They appear in Dr Lisa Cameron MP s early day motion regarding the welfare of racing Greyhounds in the UK which was tabled on 16 December 2021 and has received cross party support with 19 members signing it The petition will be debated in parliament on 28 March 2022 Will the GBGB be given another chance to clean up its sport It s been five years since its last five year reform plan the Greyhound Commitment with eight pledges on Greyhound safety and welfare Or is patience wearing thin Is England coming up from behind with a final sprint to the finishing line SCOTTISH CONTENDER In Dr Cameron s home nation of Scotland the campaign to ban Greyhound racing also has the finishing line in its sights There were once 20 tracks in Scotland currently only two remain one of which is unlicensed But as in elsewhere across the UK a decline in track attendance doesn t spell an end to racing Abolish All Greyhound Racing explains that The live streaming of Greyhound racing worldwide around the internet and into high street bookmakers relies on thousands of dogs and does not need the presence of punters at the track There are more than 5 000 dog runs every week to fulfil bookmakers contracts daily from early in the morning to late in the evening As in England and Wales a successful petition has been at the heart of the latest push for reform Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation s petition to end Greyhound Racing in Scotland closed with over 13 000 signatures and will be considered by the Rural Affairs Islands and Natural Environment Committee on 20 April 2022 The petition explains that self regulation hasn t worked that in the interests of animal welfare only an outright ban will do The regulatory body for Greyhound racing the Greyhound Board of Great Britain GBGB has been required to publish their injury and death statistics annually since 2017 the petition background explains In 2018 the GBGB introduced a Greyhound Commitment aiming to improve welfare and reduce injuries Despite this according to the GBGB s own injury retirement data for 2018 across the UK just short of 5 000 dogs were injured an increase on the previous year The figures also state that over 2 000 dogs died or been killed in the racing industry in 2017 and 2018 The GBGB have also reported nine positive drug tests in dogs at Shawfield in Glasgow in 2018 alone as reported in various issues of their own Greyhound Calendar publication Information published by the GBGB demonstrates that there have continued to be positive drug tests with Class A drugs into 2019 These drug tests showed dogs were drugged with cocaine and methamphetamine amongst other drugs In reality the rates of drugging are likely much higher as only around 3 of dog runs are tested More recently the rate is even lower In 2020 the sampling rate was 1 98 For Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation and the 13 000 petition signatories the time has come for an outright ban Ultimately we need legislative change to ban racing in our country to tackle the high number of injuries deaths and positive drug tests seen in this industry and to reflect the lack of public support for this unsavoury use of animals for human entertainment and gambling profit Like Wales Scotland has its eyes on the prize being the first UK nation to achieve a ban Scotland has an opportunity to lead the way by banning the racing of Greyhounds in the name of entertainment So place your bets on who will be the first home nation to achieve a ban Regardless of the country every Greyhound will win P April 2022 Dogs Today 9

Words BERNARD BALE When I am writing Bert and Ernie are never far away and like nothing better than to just lie around knowing that they will not be disturbed for some time as I get on with what I am doing around knowing that they will not be disturbed for some time as I get on with what I am doing They are not lazy though terriers are always energetic and going out or the chance of a game are always something to get excited about Perhaps the excitement of the next meal has the edge but that s dogs for you and humans too I can recommend Border Terriers to anyone because they are incredibly loyal will take all the exercise you want to give them without being too demanding and they have a great sense of fun I talk to mine all the time and they nearly always agree with me Photos Instagram dwalliams CREST OF A WAVE Bert and Ernie David Walliams loves his pair of Border Terrier muppets who have him very well trained A ctor comedy star TV personality long distance swimmer writer of highly successful children s books you could pick any of those descriptions for David Walliams but perhaps the introduction he would like most is that of dog lover It is true that I have had a thing about animals in general and dogs in particular for as long as I can 10 Dogs Today April 2022 remember said David I have dogs now and they are very close pals During the lockdown I don t know what I would have done without them I was able to spend time with my son Alfred but Bertie and Ernie my other boys were there all the time and I think they secretly loved every minute of it I could not have a biscuit without them pricking up their ears It was great Bertie and Ernie are Border Terriers Bert has been with me for a long time and is a good friend no matter what is going on in life said David Ernie has been with us for almost three years We adopted him and he adopted us at the same time Bert was happy when Ernie joined us he not only got a new pal but a partner in crime as well I was pleased to be able to adopt a dog There are many really lovely dogs in need of a loving and safe home Nobody can take them all but making a difference to at least one is very rewarding It is worth at least considering When I am writing Bert and Ernie are never far away and like nothing better than to just lie David Walliams came to our attention through TV shows but along the way he has raised thousands of pounds for charities by swimming the Channel and taking on other similar challenges I am always up for a challenge and if it does someone a bit of good then that makes it all the better I have always liked swimming it is one of the few things I was good at when I was a boy so why not put it to good use and enjoy doing it David is on the crest of a wave at the moment His children s books have become incredibly popular and he is in constant demand for television and live appearances It s good to be busy he said I think I always wanted to be involved in entertainment from quite a young age but I never thought I would get as far as this I am very grateful I am often seen in the street as a bloke who looks like David Walliams and that can be quite good fun when someone stares at you and then decides that it is not really you Most people that do recognise me are very kind especially if I have the dogs with me They will come and talk to them before they talk to me The dogs don t mind and who am I to complain If he hadn t been so successful would David have possibly had a career working with animals I don t really know I suppose it might have been nice I have always had an interest and love for all kinds of animals he said Perhaps I could have been a zoo keeper and looked after elephants and things I would still have had a dog or two though David is an active supporter of animal charities and is particularly interested in Guide Dogs for the Blind Guide Dogs is such an amazing charity and is one of the first charities you hear about as a child he said The dogs are just fantastic and they are always so beautiful and good natured clever too The training of them is brilliant and part of that training is encouraging them to be great companions I know what my own dogs mean to me so for someone with sight difficulties to have one of these dogs as a companion and helper must be amazing I can only imagine the incredible bond a person has with their guide dog David isn t tempted to have a bigger dog himself I love to see them of course but the Border Terriers are ideal for me because they will keep going all day don t take up much room are not so large an obstacle to trip over when you forget that they are on the floor alongside you and you can pick them up more easily They fit in the car too Another thing that is so very good about Border Terriers or at least about Bert and Ernie is their approach to training I have to confess that they have trained me very well and I know exactly what they want when they look at me in a certain way I immediately obey of course P April 2022 Dogs Today 11

Goethem director of crisis preparedness in food animals and plants wrote to the chief veterinary officers and Permanent Representations of all Member States Van Goethem said Member States may develop permit arrangements that would apply to pets travelling with refugees and authorise their entry without a prior individual application for a permit This approach would allow you to inform your staff for refugees to cross the border with pets Romania Hungary and Slovakia soon announced they too would waive the need for documentation for pets at this time although it was reported that in order to Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI We are all familiar with the role of district nurses registered nurses who own homes A veterinary nurse had a lightbulb moment why shouldn t Veterinary care in the community Photo posed by models R egistered vet nurse Carla Finzel first had the idea of setting herself up as a district vet nurse in 2015 after working in an animal hospital for several years I often did the night shift looking after patients overnight she says Many of them were rather sad during their stay No matter how much love and cuddles they got from the staff they were in an unfamiliar space with unfamiliar people and nothing beats being able to recover at home in theory Recovering at home was not always easy Keeping up with a pet s medical care in a home environment can be difficult for anyone who is not a professional and it s simply too much for some pet owners I kept hearing vets remarking on pet owners difficulties administering 16 Dogs Today April 2022 treatments at home with no proper professional help Carla says Dressing wounds giving injections assessing discomfort or even just giving a pill to a cat who absolutely does not want to take it not everyone is able to do it at home without training or help especially people who may be older or have disabilities Taking back the pet to the vet s each day would not be practical vet practices do the best that they can but if they were to admit all patients in need of ongoing care they would just run out of space So I began wondering what alternative was there what could I do to help Carla soon began approaching vets offering to do home visits where needed I told them You know who I am you know what I can do could I be of help And so I began going to patients homes to help with their ongoing care always through a formal referral from their vet That is very important every part of my work for each animal care must be carried on under the vet s directions Diana Rogers owner of Greyhound Troy says that without help at home her dog would not have survived the injuries caused by a severe dog attack Troy suffered horrendous injuries when he was attacked by another dog she says He was in agony I really feared my only option would be to have him put to sleep He had several nasty wounds one was 20cm and also had a drain in situ At my request my vet referred Troy to Carla Under the vet s instructions she established a pain plan for Troy and helped manage his wounds at home SAVING TROY The visits from Carla saved both me and Troy the trauma of the daily visits that would have been needed to the vet Carla was in frequent contact with our vet via phone and email to update him on Troy s progress and gain further instructions I will be forever grateful to Carla for her kindness and professionalism I truly believe Troy would not have survived his injuries without her help Mr Chops the cat another of Carla s patients saw her more than once a day as his owners struggled to administer his medication work in the community looking after patients in the comfort of their pets get district nurses too Owner Michael Stevens says My father Derek struggled to administer medication and became stressed shaky and very upset trying to do it Daily trips to the vet were out of the question for both him and Chops Along came Carla highly recommended by the vet practice She visited two to three times a day to relieve Derek of the responsibility HELLO MR CHOPS Derek s previous cat JoJo had diabetes so he was totally aware of the importance of the medication being given correctly and he was always worried he would forget it or give it twice so having a district veterinary nurse log everything made Derek feel happy and relieved that his beloved companion Mr Chops was safe Having someone show you how to care for your pet with post op treatment is much better than following instructions on a leaflet With all the help we received during his illness our beloved Mr Chops is now a happy confident pussy cat that definitely rules the house Carla says When people struggle to manage administering the treatment to their pets on their own we can do so much to help them all while taking some workload off the vet A concern I have is that without a registered nurse available to get some care done at home people may turn to people who are not qualified to help The title of veterinary nurse is not protected anyone can call themselves one even if they lack relevant training and qualifications Mr Chops referring vet from Southdown Veterinary Group says Carla has in the past few years proved herself invaluable in supporting our patients their owners and us clinicians Mr Chops is a tabby cat who belonged to an elderly gentleman he presented with a blocked urinary bladder which can be a life threatening condition Mr Chops required multiple medications every day and frequent trips to the vet which the elderly owner found unmanageable Euthanasia was discussed there is a need for district nursing This is treatment that cannot be provided within the veterinary clinic but which some owners are not capable of providing themselves After working with many vets over seven years Carla was encouraged to share with the wider veterinary community the many benefits a district vet nurse can provide to patients and their owners through talks at veterinary universities and veterinary nursing colleges as well as writing for various veterinary publications When people struggle to manage administering the treatment to their pets on their own we can do so much to help them all while taking some workload off the vet For her efforts she received the first ever monthly Above and Beyond Award by VN Times in January 2019 In August the following year the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons RCVS announced they were looking into expanding the role of veterinary nurses and support the development of district nurse roles by allowing vet nurses to provide services for different vet practices without being directly employed by them RCVS VN council chairman Matt Rendle said at the time I think it is a massive step forward The changes would allow veterinary nurses to demonstrate the skills they already have we have some amazing abilities knowledge and understanding within the vet nursing profession and I think more structure within it and these proposed changes will allow nurses to really maximise what they do in practice It will also give more potential for diversifying in a more meaningful way The benefits are huge when it comes to career satisfaction and advancement as well as mental health and commitment to the role SLOW CHANGE I feel incredibly excited about it and slightly apprehensive too as it is a massive amount of change but I am confident this is all going to happen and it is amazingly positive However this change may not be coming as swiftly as pet owners may hope A statement by the RCVS reads Following our consultation on proposals made by the Legislation Working Party the full recommendations for legislative reform was submitted to Defra last year and some of those proposals do relate to the veterinary nursing including the decoupling of delegation of tasks to veterinary nurses by a veterinary surgeon from employment To clarify under the current Veterinary Surgeons Act veterinary nurses need to be employed by the vet who has the animal under their care in order for the vet to direct and delegate tasks that fall under Schedule 3 of the VSA to the veterinary nurse As part of the recommendations for reform we have a proposal that says a VN will no longer necessarily have to be employed by the vet in order for the vet to delegate these tasks to them this could allow for more independently operating district veterinary nurse type roles Please bear in mind that this proposal along with all of the other legislative reform recommendations would need new primary legislation to replace the Veterinary Surgeons Act in order to come into fruition and that may be some time away P April 2022 Dogs Today 17

Michel DeLisle with Rex Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Hear me raw Michel Shel DeLisle was not planning to feed her dog a raw diet in fact she hadn t even been aware of the option until the breeder said something unexpected B y the way your pup has to eat raw When she heard those words Shel DeLisle was confused About to take home her Anatolian Shepherd puppy she simply had no idea what that meant The breeder proceeded to tell me that her dogs get raw veggies raw chicken raw goat ends etc for meals she told Dogs Today I must have looked dubious and she demonstrated by reaching inside a cooler and flipping a chicken haunch at my 15 week old pup who promptly downed it Great I thought I am bringing a puppy home with a bowel 18 Dogs Today April 2022 perforation My next thought was how expensive is this going to be The breeder recognised my consternation and began to explain how she prepares the pup food in the blender each morning because they won t eat the vegetables whole and pick around them for the good stuff That sounded familiar I think my kids did that For dinner she said just give him a handful of meat She handed me a 30lb bag of goat ends and a book on how to feed a dog raw food Driving home with a pup and a bag of goat ends Shel wondered what precisely she had got herself into and was more than a little concerned that her pup wouldn t make it to his first birthday Rex cried the whole way then threw up Car sick Dying Not sure which We stopped at Petco for a do it yourself bath before heading home Then the research started and I mean real research not the advice that every single person had on how to do it Reminder to self don t mention raw feeding to strangers As the breeder recommended enzymes for the first year in order to help Rex digest bones Shel ordered some online She also ordered more books on raw feeding and read several articles online always making sure to check the author first

If this is too much work in the past few years there has been a huge increase in prepared raw meals with more options to pick from than ever before if you do wish to try a raw diet They have the advantage of being made by people with knowledge of dogs dietary requirements too so you don t need to worry that your own research may fall short of what your dog needs to thrive She said At the end of the day this is what I came up with don t listen to anyone who is not an expert on canine nutrition and don t be afraid to supplement until you get it right Dogs have nutritional needs just like humans Vitamins minerals healthy oils along with vegetables fruits proteins and yes even some grains are important for good health I stopped using a blender early on because I found that if I used bone broth I met many mineral needs and my pup didn t mind vegetables with bone broth I added organ meats to the vegetables and bone broth along with apples cottage cheese whole eggs and some Dinovite I had a coupon for Rex always left the apples behind For dinner Rex ate raw chicken with whatever meat ends the local butcher provided He thrived At Rex s one year check up however the vet noted that Rex was about 10 pounds underweight although healthy This confused Shel as he did not beg or scrounge for food but she followed the vet s 20 Dogs Today April 2022 advice to add rice or cooked cereal to his food The recipe changed again to meet his needs Shel says Breakfast changed to California mixed veggies cauliflower broccoli and carrots cottage cheese eggs organ meats bone broth and a combination of baked potato oatmeal rice or the like Dinner is now rice bone broth and mixed raw meat RAW TIPS Is it expensive No it is less per pound than good kibble Is it timeconsuming No I make food one or two times each month and it takes 30 minutes I know that I could stop but Rex is healthy lies at my feet in gratitude when I make his food yeah let s go with that and I take a little pride in it Rex is now a healthy happy adult who works a few hours every week and loves playing with friends both human and canine Cooking for your dog is not everybody s thing I get that Shel said And just as a reminder you cannot go straight from kibble to a raw diet overnight Another thing to Bearing that in mind if you are interested in feeding raw here are Shel s tips Research before you start Find resources online and don t forget to check with your vet Invest in a good chest freezer The food must be kept refrigerated or frozen and thawed when needed Local butchers will give you their ends to supplement the lean meat you buy My friends now give me freezerburned meat or venison when they clean out their refrigerators Rex doesn t care Some markets have organic meat for cheap This is where I get my chicken and sometimes my vegetables Vegetables go on sale Make sure you are aware of what a dog can and cannot have Dogs need omega oils Don t be afraid to throw sardines or other oily fish into the mix Never be ashamed of supplementing Pre package meals in gallon freezer bags or reusable plastic containers for easy use Drop stool samples off at your vet as needed I look at my dog s poop and if there is too much mucus some is normal or if it is soft or runny for more than a couple days I take a sample in to make sure he didn t eat anything that isn t good for him If this is too much work and there s no shame in that in the past few years there has been a huge increase in prepared raw meals with more options to pick from than ever before if you do wish to try a raw diet They have the advantage of being made by people with knowledge of dogs dietary requirements too so you don t need to worry that your own research may fall short of what your dog needs to thrive But to be on the safe side always check with your vet P ADVERTISING FEATURE Good news served fresh We know that feeding your dog raw food has become a thing a trend a movement but at Ethically Raised we believe that Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI Green green grass at home Back in January Piddle Patch was featured on BBC Dragons Den receiving offers from four out of five dragons We talk with creator Rebecca Sloan about this real grass soil free dog toilet and what goes on behind the scenes in the Den R ebecca s issue with puppy pads started early while potty training her Pomeranian puppy Jamie Not only were the soiled smelly pads no fun to deal with but Rebecca found that her pup got rather confused over what sort of surface he was supposed to pee on and kept having accidents on other textiles around her home I was really not impressed with the typical puppy pads Rebecca recalls Not least because I was conscious of the environmental impact There has been so much awareness about the impact of 22 Dogs Today April 2022 plastic in these past few years which I think is important and something manufacturers should keep in mind Plastic can take a very long time to degrade in landfill up to 500 years in fact so pads are a very wasteful solution as they end up in the landfill I began looking for alternatives but I struggled to find a natural intuitive and plasticfree solution The idea of using grass came as Rebecca watched Jamie pee in the park It seemed much more natural and if he got used to peeing on grass he may stop having accidents on carpeting Rebecca says I thought I want some grass and just went to a garden centre to buy a roll of real grass to put down for my puppy to use It didn t go as well as Rebecca had hoped though soil went everywhere turning into mud as urine seeped in and the grass was dead within a couple of days GREENER PASTURES Needless to say it wasn t exactly the solution I d been looking for Rebecca says But it got me thinking how could I make it work How could I solve those problems the dirt and the dying grass How could I create something that could overcome those challenges and bring the outside in for the dogs Eventually Rebecca had the intuition of using a liquid retentive mat to grow the grass in which would help extend the lifespan of the grass and create a natural soil free toilet solution The process took a long time and lots of testing but finally she had a product she was satisfied with and that she felt could make toilet training an easier experience for owners and pups alike One of the real benefits is that Piddle Patch is a sensory experience puppies can tell the difference

It was really busy on the day of filming they absolutely grill you What you see in the finished product is only a fraction of what actually goes on I was in the Den for two hours and they ask you everything about your business Dog Insurance How much could your dog cost Insurance from 7 12 u 95 of claims are successful Growths cysts tumours 894 52 Digestive system issues 758 15 Eye disease sight 559 46 Disease in legs 752 74 Heart disease 453 33 Get a quote online or call 03300 243 980 between the grass and the rug A lot of dogs take to it very quickly while others still need support to learn but once they catch on it s a very natural use of the toilet It s easy to wean them off it and have them pee while out in the park for example because they go from grass to more grass The transition is natural However Rebecca didn t only have puppies in mind when she created Piddle Patch it also gives adult dogs a place to do their business in a vast array of situations I wanted Piddle Patch to work for all kinds of dogs and owners who may not be able to take their dog outside to a grassy area every time they need to toilet Rebecca explains A lot of people use it on balconies as more and more people live in high rise flats with limited access to green areas It works well for any kind of emergency situation for example if your dog has mobility issues or is recovering from surgery if you re in the midst of a work call or it s night and just opening the door to let them into a backyard is not an option It was especially popular during lockdown then with all the dog thefts in the news women especially were rather nervous at the idea of 24 Dogs Today April 2022 going out at night to let their dog pee and this was a solution Piddle Patch was a resounding success on the Dragons Den four out of five dragons made an offer and Rebecca settled for the one from Steven Bartlett He understood the product really well the place in the market how to reach customers I felt he was a great fit for the business and that we could create a good partnership OUTSIDE IN The road to get to that point however was far from easy involving a lengthy application and audition process That was really intense and a lot of work Rebecca says You need to draw up a comprehensive business plan with the financial aspects all thought out And of course you need to get it all right they verify every claim you make which can take months They don t air anything that they re not sure is factually correct Once you ve been vetted and if you make it to the shortlist you need to do a video application At this point they choose who is going to the show and you get assigned a date and time to come for the pitch It was really busy on the day of filming they absolutely grill you What you see in the finished product is only a fraction of what actually goes on I was in the Den for two hours and they ask you everything about your business absolutely any part of those two hours can be aired and it can be nerve wracking not knowing what parts the public at home will get to see With the segment filmed there was no time to rest Rebecca had to go through a due diligence process for the offer and to start preparing her business with investment from a Dragon After you go on the show they extend an offer to you but that doesn t mean the deal is done she explains After that it goes to the due diligence period that is the period where you really start working on negotiations about how the partnership is going to work Steven and I are working together now finalising the agreement so this is going to be developing throughout this year As dog owners everywhere grow more and more environmentally conscious it s no surprise this product was so well received in the Dragons Den and we wouldn t be surprised to see more and more green alternatives to dog products come under the spotlight in 2022 P Entertainment Leisure Insurance Services Entertainment Leisure Insurance Services Limited and Lifestyle Policy Limited are appointed representatives of The Equine and Livestock Insurance Company Limited The Insurance Emporium is a trading name Equine and Livestock Insurance Company Limited registered in England and Wales no 294940 which is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority no 202748 All facts and statistics are calculated from in house research based on average claim costs per most claimed injury or disease between June 2020 and June 2021 u Quoting criteria for premium small mongrel YO3 06JJ Time Limited Bronze cover level and Lunar Monthly pricing

Midas a Smooth Faced Pyrenean Sheepdog Words CLAIRE HORTON BUSSEY types are side by side for comparison and are explained by the dogs backgrounds Basque shepherd archives show the Long Haired was indigenous to the Haute Pyr n es in the Central Pyrenees mountains These would have crossed with other dogs in the foothills and wider region There was a transhumance culture where every March all the flocks in the region would come together to graze together in the high mountain pastures Blue a Pyrenean Sheepdog Long Haired On the way up The Long Haired is rectangular in shape longer than it is tall whereas the Smooth Faced is more upright and almost square in the body The construction of the dog in the front differs between the two types The Long Haired has a classic pastoral shoulder allowing for more freeflowing movement with big reach and drive ideal for herding sheep in the mountains while the Smooth Faced has more bone and substance and is straighter with more open angulation in the shoulder This results in a shorter stride In France the and faster gait better suited for droving INDEPENDENT WORKERS larger stock to market Smooth Faced The dogs needed to be energetic with In terms of character they are both still is known as the a protective coat to equip them for the very alert dogs but the Smooth Faced is harsh elements and cold temperatures slightly less wary and more biddable making Face Rase or They needed to be confident and brave it more trainable and a bit easier to live with as shaved face and ever alert ready to detect anything a pet albeit in an active home with ongoing that could be a threat to the flocks they training and day long human company were watching over Two or three dogs would typically Both types are highly intelligent active dogs with work with the large powerful white mountain dogs that strong herding instincts but says Eion the Long Haired would guard the sheep Essentially the Long Haireds is still very much an alarm dog at heart The Smooth acted as alarm dogs alerting the mountain dogs or Faced is perhaps a couple of steps back it has less shepherd to anything unusual and worked independently nervous energy than the Long Haired and is more in gathering and driving the flocks Both the Pyrenean biddable and slightly less wary Sheepdogs and Pyrenean Mountain Dogs can still be seen SHOW TIME working the same way in the Pyrenees to this day The process of getting the Smooth Faced to Crufts has The Smooth Faced would have been responsible for been an interesting one With two established breeders taking livestock to market in the Pyrenean towns in the of the Smooth Faced on the committee the club has foothills Stock would have included not only sheep but had the long term goal of getting the breed recognised also cattle and horses The Smooth Faced of today and the The last decade has been spent establishing the Smooth last 100 years was valued by horse traders and explains Faced in the UK and going abroad to compete Dogs why it is typically a larger dog than the Long Haired Hairy faces are soooo last year meet the Smooth Faced Pyrenean Sheepdog T his year s Crufts saw the Smooth Faced Pyrenean Sheepdog compete for the first time in the show ring after being recognised by the Kennel Club in January 2021 Its close cousin the Pyrenean Sheepdog Long Haired has been recognised since 1989 but now the less hirsute variant has come into the limelight We have recognition for the Smooth Faced on the basis of it being a variant says Eion Flint chair of the Pyrenean Sheepdog Club of Great Britain Usually variants are different types of the same breed varying only in size or coat type as in the Dachshund for example which has three coat types and two sizes However in the Pyrenean Sheepdog s case the difference isn t only in the coat The Long Haired has a classic triangular head with a lower ear set a little bear head 26 Dogs Today April 2022 Eion explains The Smooth Faced has a slightly different head profile with not only short hair but also a longer muzzle The coat differences aren t simply that the Smooth Faced has a well smooth face The Long Haired has a coat that s a mix of coarse goat s hair and sheep s underwool particularly on the back half which typically develops into felt dreadlocks Eion explains KEY DIFFERENCES The Smooth Faced coat is very dense almost fur like It is very slick over the head and in adults aged about three onwards there is a bit of a ruff where the coat is thicker on the neck and chest It is then short over the body and back with thicker culottes on the thighs The differences are easier to see when the two April 2022 Dogs Today 27

were imported and there have been four or five litters in the UK now the Smooth Faced has an average litter size of three to four pups There are still only 25 dogs in the UK but the breed club produced a strategic paper about the breed and its future and set out the club s vision for the breed which convinced the Kennel Club that the breed is viable in this country BAGS OF ENERGY The challenge going forward is to gently encourage the numbers and get pups into homes Both types are still very small numerically There are 25 Smooth Faced Pyreneans in the UK and 2020 saw just three Kennel Club registrations of the Long Haired and nine registrations for the first three quarters of 2021 These are certainly not dogs for everyone As described on the Pyrenean Sheepdog Club of Great Britain website Both variants of the Pyrenean Sheepdog are truly unique and remarkable dogs but can be quite demanding Ideally this is a dog best suited to an active country lifestyle but with adequate exercise and companionship can cope in more urban environments The most important thing for a Pyrenean Sheepdog is to be with their owner this is not a dog suited to being left alone for long periods But with the right family you couldn t ask for a more rewarding partner They naturally want to work and need some way of channelling their intelligence and energy Totally focused on their owners they need a partnership approach that earns their respect along with plenty of exercise The Smooth Faced competes at the highest levels in agility competition including national representation so if you want to excel in canine sports and fancy a change to the Border Collie this could be a breed worth investigating P For more information about the Pyrenean Long Haired and Smooth Faced Sheepdog contact the Pyrenean Sheepdog Club of GB which runs the breed database has lots of information on health and also organises fun days agility days herding days and educational seminars www pyreneansheepdogclub com and on the way out Every year the Kennel Club releases its breed registration statistics for the previous year and announces which native breeds are on the vulnerable list Photographer Maddie Newton decided to raise awareness of these breeds and set about photographing them V ulnerable native breeds of dog are those of British or Irish origin that have low or declining Kennel Club registration numbers under 300 per year to be exact explains Maddie When you compare this number to the 25 000 Cocker Spaniels registered in 2020 you start to realise just how much of a concern these breeds are With over 200 breeds recognised by the KC it s not hard to imagine why some are overlooked but this is a shame because if they disappear altogether we will lose a piece of our history along with them The goal of these photographs is to put these dogs in the spotlight and to get people to consider a breed they may not have even thought of but could be absolutely perfect for them and their lifestyle Maddie says This month we look at an alternative to the Smooth Faced Pyrenean the Smooth Collie 28 Dogs Today April 2022 Smooth Collie 72 registered in 2020 DOLLY Smooth Collies are super intelligent embodied by a sensitive soulfulness that is hard to explain Despite their size they love lap cuddles whether you want them or not They require minimal grooming just an occasional bath if needed Smooth Collies love to please their humans which makes them easy to train especially if treats are involved They are natural herding and agility dogs Smooth Collies have brought light into my life that I didn t even know I needed Andrea Richardson 10 OFF WITH CODE UKDOG22 CDRM Solution Neurological pelvic health formula Perfect for large breed dogs Maintain and support normal nerve fibre function

Snow This is really disappointing that we are allowing political aspects to affect our collective love of dogs If they were really recognising the fact that it s the leaders not the people then why punish the people I m also curious if they are going to reimburse the Russian competitors for all the money they would have spent not only coming to Crufts but also for the time effort and money it s cost them to get their dog to qualify Karen Rhodes I think it s the right decision However considering we don t let Russian flights into our air space and a lot of other countries won t either how would exhibitors get here anyway Njegos Serbon When Americans and Nato invaded Iraq what did they do then Oh yes nothing Was the Kennel Club right to exclude Russian exhibitors from Crufts On 28 February as the invasion of Ukraine kept unfolding before the world the Kennel Club said that in the light of rapidly evolving circumstances it is with a heavy heart we have taken the decision not to allow exhibitors from Russia to compete at Crufts 2022 This is as testament to our sadness and concern about this situation which we recognise is driven by the leaders of the country and not the Russian government s decision to invade Ukraine Was the Kennel Club s choice the right one Here are some of the opinions 30 Dogs Today April 2022 Karen Dodd This is the right decision under these very wrong decision This only contributes to even greater separation and hatred Ordinary people have nothing to do with it at all this is all the ambition of the rulers Theresa Fisher I understand people saying the government should be punished and not the people but the people need to hold their government accountable for their actions I agree with all the sanctions that are happening The world needs to stand up and this is the way they do it Marianne Johnson Turn against the government not the people This is so divisive and only hurts the innocent citizens Putin couldn t care less We live in a democracy and have tried hard to make our government accountable but those with huge money have had a permanent seat it seems even with much protest Now imagine living under a dictator and be a busy one and of course I had taken on too much but I had planned the day well and as long as I kept to time all would go smoothly My first appointment went well and as I prepared for the next one I felt confident it would go smoothly too That is when my day started to go downhill I was late for my appointment because of a traffic jam which meant I had to reschedule it for the week after and from then on everything fell down like a house of cards By the time I got home I had a major sense of humour failure snapped at my family made a horrible dinner stubbed my toe on the dresser and went to bed in a bad mood Trigger stacking is a series of stressful events that happen close together Most people can usually cope with one or two stressors depending on the severity of these events but it starts to get a lot harder to deal with when negative experiences keep happening in quick succession and emotional shelves become fully stacked When I look back at it my bad day wasn t that bad at all but triggers don t have to be really serious to cause discomfort If your senses are being challenged you are in pain or just feel off you are more likely to have a lower stress threshold and snap after fewer triggers so it does depend on your emotional state at the time and your tolerance level We all have different ways of coping with stress but we all experience trigger stacking at some point in our lives and most of the time we do not even know it is happening Our dogs do not know either and when they react in a negative way or seem to have a short fuse we have to consider what has happened to them that day or in the past and ask ourselves why they reacted instead of getting angry and telling them off Arousal can be a pleasant or negative experience by that I mean the state of being really excited or really angry for example can cause dogs and people to react without thinking Triggers are like lit candles and it s up to us to snuff them out or make sure they do not get lit in the first place I quote the wonderful Sarah Fisher here founder of Animal Centred Education and VSA faculty member She illustrates trigger stacking with an example that most people might not think lights any candles at all petting a dog The dog you are stroking might be fine being touched on the head and around the ears but then starts to lick their lips when you get to their neck You don t see how tense their face becomes when you get to their back and you are surprised when you go to pet them on the hips and they snap at you It is not their fault that they reacted negatively you just lit all their discomfort candles and now they have no choice but to snuff them out CREATING SPARKS Some dogs might be more genetically shy or nervous in certain situations Early life experience can also contribute to trigger stacking and understanding your dog s threshold can help them feel more comfortable High arousal can make some animals more volatile after a fun but vigorous game for example a dog might become more sensitive to touch or noise and snap when approached or touched When a dog reactive dog is put in an environment around other dogs he might tolerate them being close to him for a bit but his candles get lit very quickly and if he is not removed from the situation he might have to lunge bark snap or bite to get them to stay away So how do you prevent trigger stacking Management is very effective in helping avoid situations and environments that cause your dog problems If you know your dog has social anxiety for example do not take them to the dog park or doggy day care If they feel uncomfortable around guests in your home put them behind a baby gate or in their own room with an enriching activity toy to keep them occupied while you entertain These quick fixes might not feel as if you are doing any active training to help the problem but they are highly effective in keeping your dog calm Understanding how your dog s brain works and recognising that emotional responses usually occur before rational ones ensures that you can give your dog experiences that have a calming effect rather than ones that cause arousal You cannot be rational and reactive at the same time so if you give your dog a task to focus on at a time when you think they might have difficulty you will encourage their thinking rational brain to take over preventing the emotional limbic brain from taking the lead The pre frontal cortex has a calming effect because it organises the brain and keeps the dog thinking rationally However when a dog is over threshold they can t respond to cues because they have gone limbic and the only thing that can be done is to get the dog away from the situation as fast as possible PLEASURE SEEKER One of the best ways you can encourage your dog to think is to play the go find it game or give them a problem solving puzzle toy Seeking behaviour is usually associated with a pleasant state of mind and encourages the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine which is sometimes known as the pleasure chemical and mood stabiliser However if you give your dog seeking activities to do make sure they are having fun when seeking and are not in a state of conflict where they are curious but scared at the same time When a dog is conflicted they might display displacement activities which occur when dogs have motivation for conflicting behaviour If you see your dog sniffing scratching yawning sneezing etc these can be early signs that they are feeling uncomfortable so do take it seriously Be aware that pain can also lead to fear and rage The example given by Sarah Fisher is not a dramatic one but it does highlight how careful we have to be when we touch dogs especially those that are elderly or have certain medical conditions Even though I knew that my shelves were being fully stacked that day I was still angry and went to bed in a bad mood That shows how powerful the emotional brain is and how easily it can take over but I could have made things a lot easier for myself by not taking on so much in the first place Managing my schedule better would have relieved the pressure I felt and I would not have got so stressed Think how much better our dogs lives would be if we paid them a bit more attention and avoided situations where too many of their candles were lit Learning how to snuff them out before the triggers are stacked against them will make their lives so much easier P April 2022 Dogs Today 33

If you see a dog wearing yellow or any dog on a lead you can make someone s day by popping your dog on their lead until you ve passed them found ourselves going out in the dark to quiet places to walk hiring private fields and never walking anywhere without Monty s yellow I need space vest and armed with plenty of high value treats When we first got Monty he found the world a very overwhelming place We weren t enjoying our walks and neither was he Monty barked and lunged at the things that worried him and we found it stressful trying to walk him in public Around that time I learnt that a day off from walks a week can really help reactive dogs It gives their cortisol levels time to go down and there are lots of enrichment activities that can be done at home to tire them out mentally We learnt that the colour yellow indicates that a dog needs space They might be wearing a yellow vest ribbon lead harness or bandana and if the owner is as cool as I am they might be wearing a bright yellow tabard or hoodie too The dog might be wearing yellow 42 Dogs Today April 2022 because they re old or arthritic and don t want to be jumped on they re in training or they have an injury but whatever the reason they all need space You can read more at https www yellowdoguk co uk MONTY S TRIGGERS If you see a dog wearing yellow or any dog on a lead you can make someone s day by popping your dog on their lead until you ve passed them It s really heartbreaking when you ve spent weeks training your dog even paying and working with behaviourists to change your dog s emotions around the things that they find frightening only to have an off lead friendly dog run up to them which sets your training back and undoes all that hard work We ve found that working with qualified force free positive behaviourists on counterconditioning has really helped us to help Monty with changing his emotions when he sees triggers things that scare him This is a really slow process of pairing the scary thing with high value food so that the dog learns that great things happen when their trigger appears It needs to be done in controlled situations so that you don t run the risk of the dog crossing their threshold and reacting You can find highly qualified positive trainers at https abtc org uk practitioners We ve also learnt that the most important thing is to be able to increase the distance between Monty and the trigger so that he is not constantly reacting Teaching Monty a U turn that he does on cue has been really helpful in managing tricky situations and also scatter feeding throwing treats in the grass for him to find for times when we cannot avoid the trigger People with reactive dogs will often tell you how fabulous our relationships with our dogs are as despite how stressful things can be we re constantly advocating for them and in the case of humanreactive dogs we re often the only people our dogs fully trust Getting Monty changed our lives We have fewer holidays and evenings out but Monty has filled our lives with happiness laughter trust love snuggles on the sofa plenty of fur and lots of yellow P

My Dog Crush Best names Rufus Beamer Igor Jocasta Huckleberry Humphrey Festus Faith Mala Ivanka Origins O tter hunting is first mentioned in the 1100s when otter were vermin who stole muchneeded fish stock from ponds Fast forward to the second half of the 20th century when river health was at an all time low together with the otter population and hunting was eventually banned in 1978 That could well have been the end of this ancient British scenthound but the masters of the last two Otterhound packs collaborated with breeders and the Kennel Club to ensure the breed s survival Today they are used to hunt mink and there is hope that the breed s magnificent scenting abilities could lead to new careers perhaps in drug detection and related work 46 Dogs Today April 2022 Traits Social Loving Affectionate Compassionate Noisy Goofy Loyal Strongwilled High energy Owner s view C aroline Wheatley has had Otterhounds for over 12 years Living on the island of Jersey when she wanted to add to her pack of two Labradors and a Newfoundland it was essential that she find a dog that was comfortable around water The Otterhound is certainly that with webbed feet like the Newfoundland As you d expect from a rare breed there was something of a wait for a pup but it was time well spent Caroline says I waited two years on a breeder list and used that time to learn more about the breed and speak to other owners Fast forward to today and Caroline has two Otterhounds Faith and Jocasta Faith has a huge character and loves attention and fuss she will nudge and paw you for strokes She loves curling up on the sofa for a snooze but equally a game of fetch in the garden with her fluffy pheasant toy Fetch is not something we see from many Otterhounds as they wouldn t naturally retrieve Jocasta is the kindest dog I ve ever met and is absolutely reliable in any situation She loves humans and other dogs Jocasta is a true hound in every sense and a very good scent tracker When she isn t sniffing her other favourite pastime is eating and she is very vocal at dinnertime She barks at the same point every day to tell me she s ready But life with an Otterhound isn t all cute selfies and doggie snuggles Having any hound is hard work Caroline says They are not for the house proud as they love a headfirst drink in the water bowl and to dribble it across your kitchen floor Many have very oily coats which is great to repel the water but can have a tendency to get a bit knotty and smelly if not cared for The Otterhound is a rugged natural looking breed that is fairly low maintenance in terms of grooming HOUNDS AT HEART I like to use the term wash and go with an Otterhound but this isn t strictly true There are various thoughts on coat care with some people using dog shampoo and some just water Caroline explains She recommends a good comb through once a week to prevent mats and to get rid of their twig collection from walks Depending on the coat and what they get up to Caroline advises a full wash and dry between once a month or up to once every three months When it comes to living with an Otterhound Caroline says they have two switches on and off They love nothing more than chilling on the sofa but equally the minute the lead is presented they are ready to go When it comes to going it shouldn t come as a surprise that the breed is a true hound at heart I know a handful of Otterhounds who can be trusted off lead and they can be trained to do almost anything but be prepared to have a dog that you cannot trust off lead as most interesting smells outside need to be investigated and when the nose is on the rest of the senses switch off As with all breeds the key is to research the rewards and challenges you could face and to make a decision accordingly The research was certainly worth it for Caroline Owning an Otterhound may mean a little bit of mud and a wet kitchen floor but it will also provide you with a lot of fun and laughter as they really are hilarious P Best Facebook Groups Keep Calm and Papillon Papillon Lovers For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR Awarded Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2018 UK Winners 2013 2019 Dogmatic UK Ltd is on Facebook Endorsed by Dr David Sands BSc PhD CFBA Fellow of the Canine Feline Behaviour Association Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk April 2022 Dogs Today 47

insider tips on achieving show dog standards from the comfort of your own home DIFFERENT STROKES As you re aware different dogs have different needs because of their coats It s vital to understand what type of coat your dog has and what products are suitable for it Wire coated dogs like terriers and schnauzers require a keratin based shampoo to fortify their coat Conditioners are also a good idea tomoisturise the skin For dogs with curly coats such as Poodles Bichon Frise and water spaniels volumeboosting shampoos are a must Also using a product with some keratin will make the hair 50 Dogs Today April 2022 thicker and result in a highstandard groom Silky coated breeds like Afghan Hounds Irish Setters and Cocker Spaniels can use a wider variety of shampoos so choose one to suit your dog s particular hair and skin needs There are some great smelling products out there SHAMPOOING TIPS Water temperature Lukewarm water is best Test the temperature with your elbow just as you would do for a baby Hair dryer or towel Using a hair dryer from a distance is completely safe as long as the temperature is only warm or cool It s actually a better option for dogs with curly coats whose coats can become matted from towel drying Bath brush A reliable brush will remove dirt debris and oily residue allowing natural oils to replenish themselves Getting a glossier coat If you need to bathe your dog regularly use a moisturising shampoo or a sensitive oatmeal shampoo if they scratch themselves a lot HAIRSPRAY There are sprays on the market specifically designed for dogs which can help keep your dog s locks firmly in place for shows want advice from someone with personal experience of the issue BRUSHING UP Coat maintenance is clearly much easier for short haired dogs A rubber palm brush will help keep their coats healthy and your home tidier If you have a double coated breed like a Shiba Inu Chow or Husky a grooming rake or a deshedding tool will remove any dead undercoat and cut back on the frizz Add a shed stopper to your grooming routine and you ll also reduce dog hair around the house With a curly or silky haired breed you ll want a metal grooming comb and a pin slicker brush to get rid of any knots before they turn into matted fur and need to be shaved out For most breeds scissors are an absolute must for your grooming kit You might need straight scissors for curly coats chunkers for thick curls or thinning shears for heavy coats There are now plenty of high quality dog grooming scissor sets available GROOM LIKE A PRO Once you have all your equipment it s important to get the technique right Always brush your dog s fur in the direction it grows adjusting the angle to follow their body Different breeds need different grooming routines Curly silky and short haired dogs should be groomed every four to six weeks with a bath every couple of weeks Wire haired dogs can usually be groomed less frequently every four to eight weeks But their coats have to be stripped out by hand rather than clipped which takes longer However every individual dog is different so it s best to ask a groomer They can point you in the right direction and help you establish a healthy grooming routine whether or not you re heading off to Crufts EXPERT ADVICE Stuart Simons FURminator s grooming expert reveals his top three tips for success HIGH QUALITY NUTRITION It s important to remember that it s not only a brush and scissors that will make a dog look great although this definitely helps Just like us humans it s also hugely dependent on what dogs eat as this is reflected in the health of their skin and coat That s why a premium diet with a high quality protein source and omega 3 and 6 is essential for maintaining a strong and glossy coat INDIVIDUAL NEEDS Grooming is a really important but often overlooked area of pet ownership and many owners sadly don t know what type of coat their dog has or how to look after it Before introducing a grooming routine to your canine companion you need to understand the difference in coat types to make sure you re caring for them in the best way Some dogs like Poodles or Bichon Frise have hair just like ours It will grow and grow and therefore needs much more regular attention than a fur bearing or combination dog will need Furbearing dogs such as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers grow to a predetermined length and then stop but they also need a lot of attention because they moult so the trick is to keep on top of the shedding hair to help them look shiny and healthy Finally combination coated dogs such as Cocker Spaniels and Irish Setters need thorough maintenance with their coats being carded or stripped by a professional groomer Although dogs whatever their coat should be in the grooming salon every four to six weeks you can help care for your pet s skin and coat at home FURminator has a range of grooming tools including a grooming rake dual grooming brush and curry comb perfect for maintaining a strong and healthy coat What s more its undercoat deShedding tool is perfect for use on fur bearing dogs reducing loose hair by up to 99 per cent when used for 10 20 minutes a week So not only will your dog be looking fur bulous but your house will also be fur free HAPPILY HANDLED Handling puppies from an early age is really important in helping them feel comfortable with others especially groomers and your breeder should have done this from the beginning even if for only a few minutes each day As soon as you get your puppy you ll want to get them used to being lifted and held and having various parts of their body touched by you Make sure your pup is calm and not too excitable to begin with before placing them on your lap Use this opportunity to begin looking at their ears mouth and coat remembering to praise them calmly for being good Over time you ll be able to build up these sessions allowing them to feel comfortable and confident when it comes to meeting your groomer P April 2022 Dogs Today 51

by the IUCN SSC International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Canid Specialist Group recommended that because this and other DNA evidence shows the side striped jackal and blackbacked jackal form a lineage that sits outside of the Canis Cuon Lycaon clade they should be placed in a distinct genus Lupulella with the names Lupulella adusta and Lupulella mesomelas rather than in the Canis genus SIDE STRIPES A yelp in the night leads to a surprising discovery I t was a balmy night and a tropical storm was thrashing the south eastern horizon with violent electricity and gusting wind We lay on the ground in sleeping bags near a fire and listened to the cosmic light show and artillery barrage work its way past us far to the east We had been exploring the southern Manyeleti Game Reserve a part of the greater Kruger region one of the most famous wildlife landscapes in north eastern South Africa We were on foot and carrying just the bare essentials required for rough camping The bush grew quiet after the noise of the storm had abated Slowly but surely the nocturnal voices we knew tentatively resumed their nocturnal chorus Square tailed and fiery necked nightjars began their liquid discussions hyena whooped fussed and whined around us and far off a magnificent lion bellowed out his royal presence to the universe And then out of nowhere finding a small pause in the cacophony 52 Dogs Today April 2022 something new A mournful highpitched yelp a single explosive note came half warbling half shrieking to us on the breeze My colleague rolled over and said Andy what on earth is that I couldn t answer Despite all my years in the bush and camping in the middle of it hundreds of time I had never heard such a noise before I turned to our game scout colleague Frans who was born in one of the local villages just outside the reserve and literally grew up in it In rather broken Shangaan his native language I asked him what the sound was Muhungubya he said Wow Really no it can t be true A sidestriped jackal I had always presumed they howled and yipped like their blackbacked cousins but clearly not This was an absolutely unique sound and we were determined to see the animal that had uttered it The following day we walked and walked in the direction we d heard the sound coming from and after finding the tracks and following them for quite a while we finally flushed out one sidestriped jackal and had a very good look at him as he trotted away somewhat miffed from the shelter of the small bushes that we had disturbed him from He was magnificent a very fine looking creature indeed slightly bigger than a black backed jackal with a buff grey coat and striking lateral stripes STANDING OUT The side striped jackal Lupulella adusta is a canid native to central and southern Africa Unlike the smaller and related black backed jackal Lupulella mesomelas which dwells in open plains the side striped jackal primarily dwells in woodland and scrub areas One Carl Jakob Sundevall named the species Canis adustus in 1847 A mitochondrial DNA sequence alignment for all the wolf like canids however revealed a phylogenetic tree with the sidestriped jackal and the blackbacked jackal at the base of this clade In 2019 a workshop hosted The side striped jackal is a medium sized member of the canid family which tends to be slightly larger on average than the black backed jackal Body mass ranges from 6 5 to 14kg headand body length from 69 to 81cm and tail length from 30 to 41cm Shoulder height can range from 35 to 50cm Its coat is buff grey with the back darker than the underside and the tail is black with a white tip Indistinct white stripes are present on the flanks running from elbow to hip The boldness of the markings varies between individuals with those of adults being more defined than those of juveniles The side striped jackal s skull is similar to that of the blackbacked jackal s but is flatter with a longer and narrower snout Its dentition is well suited to an omnivorous diet The long curved canines have a sharp ridge on the posterior surface and the outer incisors are canine like Its carnassials are smaller than those of the slightly more emphatically carnivorous black backed jackal As one might expect it therefore tends to be less carnivorous than other jackal species and is a highly adaptable omnivore with variable dietary preferences that change in accordance to seasonal and local variation It tends to forage solitarily though family groups of up to 12 have been observed to feed together in western Zimbabwe In the wild it feeds largely on invertebrates during the wet season and small mammals such as springhare in the dry months It frequently scavenges on the kills of larger predators and is a frequent campsite raider In the wild fruit is readily eaten when in season while in rural areas it can account for 30 per cent of their dietary intake It typically does not target prey larger than neonatal antelopes and avoids struggles with larger prey Indeed one was recorded to have entered a duck s pen to eat their food and totally ignored the birds The side striped jackal can live both solitarily and in family groups of up to seven individuals The family unit is dominated by a monogamous breeding pair and is among a small group of mammal species that mate for life The breeding season depends on where they live In Southern Africa breeding starts in June and ends in November with a gestation period of 57 70 days and an average litter of three to six young Interestingly females have four teats whereas female black backed jackals have six to eight teats which may suggest that they are evolved to produce smaller litters The young reach sexual maturity at six to eight months of age and typically begin to leave their parents when about 11 months old There are seven recognised subspecies of side striped jackal L a adusta West and Southern Africa Sundevall s side Safari adventures I have happened upon this enigmatic canid but a mere handful of times since that first strange nocturnal vocal engagement in the wild remoteness of the Manyeleti and mainly around the Molondozi region of south eastern Kruger National Park The ones I have seen have been solitary and always moving headlong somewhere with a seemingly single minded purpose They are extremely eye catching I guess in part because they are so rarely encountered The species is completely fascinating a niche specialised omnivorous jackal quietly occupying specific habitats on our beautiful continent Quietly except at night that is when a territorial urgency has them yelping a plaintiff mournful plea to the magnificence of the night skies as they go in search of meat fruit Join our exclusive Sub Club With newsagents and supermarkets reducing their shelf space for magazines it s getting harder to find us Help us by subscribing and reap the rewards Buy Get your first issue for only 1 Then it s 9 99 quarterly by Direct Debit direct and save more than 17 a year UK only veggies rather than exclusively relying on hunting with all its highenergy demands or scavenging the prey of larger carnivores with all the risks that this can entail if the owners are still around It gives them an aura of considered carefulness and adaptability beyond their other jackal cousins And truly it is a complete joy to see one almost as if it decided very deliberately to grace you personally with the opportunity Peter Neville is still hoping to be so favoured but perhaps the sidestriped jackal is just too selective P Save money enjoy a 17 04 saving over the year Delivered free to your door Subscriber only competitions page 59 15 voucher for PurrfectlyYappy com minimum spend 75 Call us for the special code Chance to win one of 50 Nerf dog toys Get the magazine before it s in the shops Call 01276 402599 lines open weekdays 9am 5pm or subscribe online www dogstodaymagazine co uk product dogs today uk subscriptions All new subscriptions will commence with the current issue Overseas prices Europe 65 20 for 12 issues Rest of World 79 80 for 12 issues The first 50 new or renewing subscribers this month will receive a fabulous Nerf dog toy so even your dog can benefit It s a win win win situation Please remember to include your dog s breed size and age in Dog breed and size during checkout Subscription gifts are only available to the first 50 subscribers each month sorry UK subscribers only By entering you confirm that your details will be passed on to the company providing these prizes for the purposes of distribution marketing 54 Dogs Today April 2022 April 2022 Dogs Today 55

For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST Confessions of a dogaholic N 66 Dogs Today April 2022 Hornet s nest be bland boring questions Every page had content that mattered The readers were already a feisty bunch and someone had written in about cosmetic tail docking an issue that was just starting to get a waggle on Petplan had not asked to be shown their sponsored pages in advance of publication When the magazine hit the shops Patsy probably wanted to hit Mike repeatedly She instantly pulled all their future advertising and wanted some sort of retraction but had no idea how to word it They wanted to be as far away as possible from a dog s bottom As a company they didn t want to have any position on tails or the lack of them They wanted to be appendage neutral Mike thought I was nuts to put any controversial stuff in the magazine that it was my youth and inexperience showing But what was the point in being just a fluffy dog magazine There would be many other days when advertising salespeople would be reduced to tears Lovely vet Richard Allport would often fire a wellaimed shot at an enormous vaccine company and we d all have to put our tin hats on Over vaccination was a story we were very proud of We helped the late great Catherine O Driscoll break the news that annual boosters were not needed for most diseases In the early days of email we received a fabulous one where when you scrolled down they d forgotten to delete a chain of internal messages speculating who had paid for the graphic our illustrious illustrator Kevin had created They suspected someone had commissioned Saatchi and Saatchi to destabilise annual vaccination Talking of big pharma it s time for some medicine and bed Hopefully by next time normal service will have resumed P 100 2020 WINNER Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 UK REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR Stops dogs pulling on the lead and gives you back control Life Changing products for you and your dog 8 TIMES WINNER OF Product I can t live without NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT AWARgDCoEllDar Best Do 0 21 UK 2 0 2 r re tu c fa Manu tive Dog Most Innova cturers Collar Manufa 2019 Illustration KEVIN BROCKBANK ormally I write these confessions with all the bound issues of the magazines in front of me to remind me what happened But I am still in hospital so you ll have to put up with unreliable and opioid inspired memories When you start building a magazine you must make huge choices Is keeping the advertisers happy more important than the readers Do you have a mission or is your job just to entertain and sell copies Should you poke the difficult subjects with a sharp stick or avoid them Many of these decisions are made by publishers who come from the advertising side of the business At Dogs Today I was both editor and publisher and cleaner I was like a dog with two tails as there was no one to stop me Our new salesman Mike Lazarus had miraculously started to resuscitate our advertising revenue Before him I had been doing it very badly falling for every sob story and pretty much giving everything away Mike was so proud that he d persuaded his good friend Patsy Bloom Petplan co founder to sponsor our new question and answer section I think it was called DTI Mary McKendry then Spiller s boss now Sharrock and a Purina top dog was very confused until she worked out the acronym was Dogs Today Investigates and not the Department of Trade and Industry Which reminds me of the memo sent round at British Telecom when I worked there It asked us to cut down on our TLAs Three letter abbreviations Petplan s livery looked lovely sponsoring all those many pages of topical questions and answers But even when Dogs Today was a pup they were never just going to Global Also available Collars Non Slip Leads and Gripper Training Leads offering added security and confidence throughout the winter months Endorsed by Dr David Sands BSc PhD CFBA Fellow of the Canine Feline Behaviour Association Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk Winners 2013 2021 Dogmatic UK Ltd is on Facebook Matching accessories in a selection of colours with high quality workmanship andToday fittings June 2020 Dogs 67
