Diabetes Awarness

Fccla 2016

  • There are 380 million people who have diabetes worldwide.

  • Leading cause of blindness, stroke, amputations, heart failure, and kidney failure.

  • Type 1 diabetes is the more severe of diabetes

    • Affects children and teens usually, but can affect anyone

    • Body’s immune system attacks the cells from the pancreas that make insulin, a chemical that allows sugar or glucose to enter the cells in our body and convert it into energy, called islets.

    • Insulin injections are used to bring insulin to people with this type of diabetes, but it's hard to tell how much insulin is needed because of factors such as…

      • Food

      • Exercise

      • Stress

      • Emotions and general health

    • If too much insulin is injected the body will burn too much sugar causing the blood sugar to drop too low. This condition is known as hypoglycemia which can be fatal if untreated.

    • If too little insulin is injected the body will not have enough energy to function and blood sugar will rise too high. This condition is called hyperglycemia and will increase the chance of long-term complications.

  1. In type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance your pancreas isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose levels normal
  2. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. About 90 to 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Many people are overweight when they’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. However, you don’t have to be overweight to develop it

  5. Most people with the condition have type 2. There are about 27 million people in the U.S. with it. Another 86 million have prediabetes .Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. It's what lets your cells turn glucose from the food you eat into energy. People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their cells don't use it as well as they should. Doctors call this insulin resistance
