Welcome to the ninth issue ofWhat an incredible few months it’s been! I want to extend a hearelt thank you to everyone who made Demena Awareness Week in May such a resounding success. This year we put our ‘Boost Your Brain’ campaign front and centre empowering our community with praccal ways to enhance brain health through mental, physical and social acvity. It was fantasc connecng with so many of you at our eye-catching high-street stalls, through engaging interacve games and at our insighul talks. Our stand out event, the Big Brain Challenge, brought fun and learning to over 130 people as they embarked on a unique puzzle-lled scavenger hunt across town. Parcipants tackled clues by scanning QR codes on buildings and a huge thank you to Lakey’s for providing an electric bike as a prize for our worthy winner. June brought another highlight: our annual aernoon tea at Government House, generously sponsored by Walkers. This special event allowed us to personally thank our incredible grant-givers, major donors, corporate supporters and partners. It was also a signicant milestone marking 15 years since Demena Jersey became an independent Jersey charity. Lady Kyd, our patron, moved us deeply with her inspiring speech which powerfully arculated the ongoing need for our work and underscored the value of her steadfast support. Thank you for reading and sharing our magazine, together we can make a real dierence in our community. 7Awareness Events With the support of a range of gallant volunteers, we had a number of pop-up stands; from banks to supermarkets we went out into the community to chat to the public. We also had a signicant presence on the high street with stalls at Charing Cross and Brook Street across the week and bucket collecons around town, thanks to corporate supporters: HSBC, Anity Private Wealth, Ocorian and Praxis. Not only that, but our Community Educaon Coordinator, Jane, delivered several Demena Awareness sessions including two open sessions at Santander Work Café. All part of our drive to create a demena-friendly island.Widening the reach of our message we were lucky to have been featured every day in the Jersey Evening Post, connected to their Dignity in Demena campaign, including pieces on our new training oer for professional carers and how we can all Boost Our Brains. Boost Your Brain Events We used Demena Awareness Week this year to connue to promote Boost Your Brain - our brain health awareness campaign. We launched our Big Brain Challenge at the same me - a family-friendly scavenger hunt throughout St Helier that links to key messages of smulang our brains and keeping physically acve. Down at The Pavilion (to the rear of Liberty Wharf) we held a special Boost Your Brain stand, where we shared informaon and gave out ‘stress brains’ to a few lucky visitors. We were accompanied by our mascot (a ‘brain’ superhero) who challenged the public to play giant garden games! This was the perfect locaon for our message, as we have Boost Your Brain branded planters in-situ – plus some informaonal hoarding boards nearby. These games – Connect 4 and Jenga – were chosen to illustrate how we can all Stay Sharp. This is the second pillar of our campaign alongside ‘Love Your Heart’ and ‘Keep Connected’ onto which we have recently moved our focus. Read on to nd out more about Staying Sharp and why this is an important part of brain health. 8The Big Brain Challenge launched during Demena Awareness Week and 130 intrepid entrants took part! A free scavenger hunt with a dierence, entrants walked the town of St Helier, searching for brain-shaped sckers with QR codes that hosted clues. With ten stops along the way, walkers also pieced together leers hidden within the answers, to spell out a word. Our fantasc prize for one lucky entrant was an electric bike worth approximately £2,000 – generously donated by our challenge sponsors, Lakey’s.We had entrants who walked alone aer work, families on the weekend, couples, a group of runners and even a few furry friends who took part! The challenge was designed to spread the important news that up to 45% of demena cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes made in earlier life. Our three main messages – Love Your Heart; Stay Sharp; Keep Connected – were encapsulated this sociable, family-friendly, puzzle-solving acvity.Once the challenge closed, entries were allocated a number and a prize winner was selected anonymously and at random. Richard Watson – who completed the trail as a fundraising acvity with the Jersey Hash Harriers – was selected. Boost Your Brain!Boost Your Brain!Exploring Mental Stimulation as part of our latest campaignWant to look aer your brain health? Keeping mentally smulated is key. We know that not all demenas can be prevented, so ‘vicm blaming’ is unhelpful. People can sll get demena even if they do everything ‘right’, as some factors – including biological sex, age, genes and environment, are outside of our control. Considering how you can ‘Boost Your Brain’ is about risk reducon and symptom delay, not about denite prevenon.Current research shows a complex interplay between several factors that can lead to demena, which also includes some healthy behaviours we can adopt. Evidence shows that up to 45% of demenas could be avoided by reducing known risk factors, some of those factors relate to Staying Sharp. Why Stay Sharp? *While Loving Your Heart is all about your physical health, including feeding yourself with good food and exercising your body, Staying Sharp is about ‘exercising’ your mind. Research suggests that regularly challenging your brain helps to build your ‘cognive reserve’. This is your brain’s ability to keep working properly, even when hit by diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Think of a reserve of water – a reservoir. The higher it is lled, the longer it remains at a healthy level when challenged by drought or In the last edion of Demena Maers, we considered how heart health and brain health are connected. This me, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the link between keeping mentally acve and brain health, as our new focus for the campaign.10
we top it up, the more likely to it is to remain healthy as we age. Keep mentally smulated, through individual or social acvies, helps to build this reserve. Learning new things and challenging our mind is also benecial. Higher educaon, complex work roles and smulang hobbies all add to this. You might be wondering which hobbies have the biggest impact? The truth is that new research is developing all the me in this area, so we can’t be sure – but it appears that there is no ‘wonder’ acvity that is proven to reduce risk more than others. Experts believe that the answer is to do things we enjoy – as these become sustainable hobbies (that we are more likely to maintain) and also have the added impact of liing our mood. This, in turn, has secondary benets such as reducing the risk of poor sleep and encouraging us to be more social.Examples of acvies that could help you to Stay Sharp include:• Learning a new language• Reading – con or non-con• Compleng art or cra acvies• Playing board games or compleng complex jigsaws• Journalling or creave wring• Aending talks and lectures on local history or culture • Learning an instrument • Compleng daily puzzles and word games• Enrolling on an adult educaon course. On island, we have a range of events and facilies that can help with this for low or no cost; for example, The Jersey Museum is free to enter and the library runs hosts books and audio books, plus schedules some acvies, for free. Other talks and acvies can be found online, for example via Vibrant Jersey (www.vibrantjersey.je) or Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.co.uk – search for Jersey at the top). Patron Lady Gene McColl at the opening ceremony of the charity’s new oce premises on Hilgrove Street16Before becoming an independent charity, we operated as a local branch of the Alzheimer’s Society from 1989; but in 2009, a bold decision was made by our commiee: to break away and establish a charity to beer t the needs of Islanders. With just a kitchen table, a laptop and £5,000 of seed funding, Jersey Alzheimer’s Associaon was born.A ny team with big dreams, determinaon and a deep commitment to improving life for those aected by demena laid the foundaon for what would become Demena Jersey. We oer 11 dierent types of therapeuc acvies, as well as support, advice and guidance through our Demena Advisors, counselling services and training programmes. We also work hard to raise awareness and educate the wider community to help achieve our mission to create a demena-friendly island. As part of our 15th anniversary, we reached out to some of the key people who played a vital role in our journey – those who helped shape the charity into what it is today. This is a celebraon of their vision, resilience and dedicaon, as much as it is a celebraon of the work we do now and into the future.Felicity Freeman served as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees. Can you share with us your fondest memory or core memory from your me at Demena Jersey? A core memory as a Trustee has been watching the Demena Jersey Trustees develop from a group that relied on a few key individuals (such as Kim Averty, Jim Hollywood, Advocate Michael Clapham and Andrew Le Feuvre to name but a few), to a strong widely experienced professional team, expertly led by current Chairman Chris Renouf.I also have very fond memories of Jim Hollywood, former Chair and the stories he used to tell at Trustee meetings and other sengs. If you compare Demena Jersey then and now, what would you say the biggest dierences are? The increased scope of the support services, the Meeng Place Project and the wide range of fun acvies that Demena Jersey is able to oer, possible from the growth in funding, quality of sta and the army of excellent volunteers. How would you sum up the role Demena Jersey plays within our Island community? 18Demena Strategy, reduce sgma and encourage a whole community approach.Annee Tomkinson has long-standing relaonship with Demena Jersey, her husband, the late Mike Tomkinson was the charity’s former manager. If you compare Demena Jersey then and now, what would you say the biggest dierences are? Since its launch, Demena Jersey has expanded its services in every direcon! I recently had a brief chat with Sian Wareing-Jones, the charity’s Clinical Lead and Counsellor, about the changes. Sian is the longest-serving member of sta and 15 years ago, it was just her, a general manager and a part-me oce administrator! Back then, the only service was a carers’ meeng at the William Kno Centre and Mike had just introduced Musical Memories. It’s incredible to see how much things have grown—every aspect of the service has evolved dramacally. How would you sum up the role Demena Jersey plays within our Island community? I would say the role within the Community is essenal. Although health care has expanded in all sorts of ways there isn’t always any joined up thinking for the various needs a paent may have. Demena Jersey supplies that back up and importantly, it also does it for carers and family. Although it’s independence as a charity gives freedom and speed to act, the great work done on the strategy plan will, I hope, forge closer links with the Government’s health services.Kim Averty is the former Chairman and Treasurer who helped to establish the charity independently in 2009 and was pivotal in this process. Kim was part of the charity for nine years up unl she became a Jurat in 2019. Can you share with us your fondest memory or core memory from your me at Demena Jersey? My core memory is, despite the enormity of what was involved in seng up the charity from nothing, how successful we were in achieving our aims thanks to the support of commied volunteers and the people of Jersey. If you compare Demena Jersey then and now, what would you say the biggest dierences are? I am so proud to see how far the charity has come from its small beginnings especially the expansion of its services. How would you sum up the role Demena Jersey plays within our Island community? Demena Jersey’s role is vital in raising awareness of people with demena and their families and carers and the challenges they face. Also, the provision of praccal support and acvies to those people. The rst 15 years of the charity have been incredibly pro-acve and we have fostered great relaonships with the community and with various organisaons across the Island. 20Since early 2024, Demena Jersey has oered a Demena Informaon Programme for unpaid carers – oering insights to the friends and family of those living with demena. Yet last year’s Strong Foundaons: A Demena Strategy for Jersey highlighted decits in demena specic knowledge and training for professionals as ‘consistently raised’ across stakeholders, leading to workforce development as a key priority for acon. The quality of care on island has connued to be in the news in recent months with the Jersey Evening Post’s Dignity in Demena campaign sharing some challenging lived experiences. But there is cause to be hopeful. At Demena Jersey we are delighted to share details of our new full-day, face-to-face, scenario-based training oer to meet this shorall. Building on feedback both from islanders and care-sector leaders, it is mapped to naonal demena care guidelines. Our ‘Best Pracce Demena Care’ course is designed to equip professional carers with an understanding of demena causes, symptoms and care needs – via a person-centred approach. Lived ExperienceLived ExperienceAdvisory NetworkAdvisory NetworkAt Dementia Jersey we are passionate about listening to the voices of our service users. We know that people with demena and their families and friends have a wealth of knowledge and understanding that is only gained from experience. If this is shared it can help other people understand what it is like to have demena or to care for someone with demena. It can also help us at Demena Jersey, health service providers and businesses, to design and provide services to meet people’s needs. And what is LEAN?LEAN is a network of 6 separate groups, including groups for people diagnosed with demena and other groups just for the family and friends of people with demena. These separate groups each meet 4 mes a year, in March, June, September and December to discuss a subject of concern proposed by people aending the LEAN groups, or by the sta, volunteers or trustees of Demena Jersey.Because of LEAN’s advisory purpose, the outcomes of the discussions and the recommendaons of the groups are collated in one document which is then shared, as appropriate, with government departments, health and community service providers, businesses, other charies and with our team at Demena Jersey.LEAN discussions for people with demena take place during our regular Meeng Place Project meengs and meengs for family carers are hosted in our oces in Halke Place. While we hope that family carers aending LEAN feel supported and at ease, these meengs are quite dierent to our carer support groups because of their planned focus for the discussions and their advisory purpose. LEAN in 2025In the last edion of Demena Maers we shared LEAN’s recommendaons and acons up to 2024, so here’s a summary what we have been discussing so far in 2025.In March people aending LEAN shared their experiences of issues related to driving. People spoke of the challenges they faced, with many saying they were unaware of what they were required to do following a diagnosis of demena. Others shared how dicult they found it to discuss this subject and of the challenges they experienced when it was necessary for a person to stop driving. People with demena spoke of feeling conned and of missing the freedom they had when they could drive. Some spoke of their experiences of the cognive and praccal driving tests and others of LEAN44Why Dementia Jersey wants to hear about your experiences
Lived ExperienceLived Experiencethe challenges of using the buses. The full report for March, including LEAN’s recommendaons, is now available on our website. In June the focus of LEAN’s discussions was Demena Jersey. As we are currently planning our strategy for the next 3 years, we were keen to hear about what we are doing well, so we can build upon this and about what needs improvement, to make things beer. We also wanted to hear LEAN’s views on some new service ideas, parcularly as we planning more formal links with the Memory Assessment Service and to launch a new holisc needs assessment service later this year for people with demena and family carers. These discussions and LEAN’s recommendaon were invaluable and the full report will be available on our website soon.Lived Experience Advisory Network45What to do if you would like to join in a LEAN discussionIf you have demena and already aend one of the Meeng Place Project sessions, please speak to the leader of your group about LEAN.If you are supporng or caring for a person with demena, please come along to the LEAN sessions detailed below.Friday 12th September – Aending or being in hospitalFriday 12th December – Professional care, at home and in care homes (a change of subject) Meengs are from 12.15 to 13.45 at our oces in Halke Place and facilitated by our Clinical Lead, Dr Sian Wareing-Jones. Book ClubWhether ction or non-ction, reading can be a great way to increase understanding about demena, as well as providing a useful activity with people with dementia to help stimulate and maintain connections. In this issue we feature books recommended by the Alzheimer’s Society and Demena UK.And Sll the Music Plays: Stories of People with Demena By Graham StokesThe Lile Girl in the Radiatorby Marn SlevinEach chapter tells a true real life story of a person’s experiences of living with demena.Stokes retells these moving stories in an empathec way. He invesgates each person’s historical life experiences to nd reasoning for their individual behaviours. There truly are some ‘eye opening’ and ‘a-ha’ moments within each story. Occasionally, by reading about other peoples experiences, we can hold a mirror to our own and quesons why we; or our loved ones, are reacng in a way that challenges us.This book is based on the author’s experiences of caring for his mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Through descripons of events they shared, the author gives an excellent and oen humorous insight into the challenges family members face, sharing acons he took to overcome the symptoms and behaviours his mother experienced. Areas such as the atudes of the general public and the diculty of making decisions around long term care are also depicted in a sensive manner and the author shares his own emoons and thoughts with dignity. The straighorward language and honesty of the author makes it an enjoyable read for carers and health professionals alike.46Recommended by the Alzheimer’s Society Scan this QR code to nd this book on the Alzheimer’s Society ShopRecommended by Dementia UK - Available to purchase from Amazon Scan this QR code to nd this book on Amazon
