2024 has been a landmark year for Demena Jersey as we were instrumental in launching the island’s rst Demena Strategy in June and we created our own bespoke oce and facilies at Halke Place, aer years of searching. We’ve now got a regular seat at the table with Government working collaboravely on the implementaon of the new strategy. We’re proud to say that we’ve taken forward work in a number of the strategy’s priority areas in 2024 including:Raising awareness We launched a prevenon campaign called Boost your Brain which saw us turn Broad Street into ‘Memory lane’ complete with artwork which encouraged healthy behaviours linked to proven risk factors. Diagnosing well We worked in partnership with the Memory Assessment Service (MAS) to redesign their ‘About your MAS appointment’ leaet given by GPs to paents at the point of referral. This now includes informaon on what happens aer a diagnosis and gives an overview of Demena Jersey’s services.Supporng people with demena and their familiesWe have introduced free training for up to 120 family carers a year and a ‘carer’s pack’, lled with helpful resources.Supporng Jersey to become a demena friendly islandWe launched our Demena Friendly Business Scheme, working with local organisaons including Hospice and JT to train sta and improve the customer experience for people with demena. We believe in a future where mely diagnosis is the norm; where there is a clear and supporve care pathway; where sgma is eradicated and where every person touched by demena feels valued and understood. Through collaboraon, educaon and innovave services, we connue to aim to empower individuals and their families, enabling them to navigate the challenges of demena with dignity and strength. We couldn’t do this without our wonderful sta and trustees, our amazing volunteers and generous supporters. Together, we are truly making a dierence to the lives of those aected by demena and are taking important steps towards a more demena-friendly Jersey. 8Influence professional practice We used our experse to inuence professional pracce in order to improve island-wide services. In 2024 we:Co-authored the rst Jersey Demena Strategy with Government which launched in June 2024. The strategy makes 5 key recommendaons which tackle the challenges negavely aecng the quality of life of islanders with demena. Connued to grow the Lived Experience Advisory Network (LEAN), (formally Panel) which is a group of up to 40 people with demena and carers who comment on issues relang to their experiences on a monthly basis and reported back to them which of their recommendaons we have taken forward. Worked with a range of partners and working groups for example the Older People’s Living Forum and the Jersey CEO Network to inuence work to improve professional services, training and policies aecng people with demena and those who care for them. We joined a programme sponsored by Lloyd’s Bank Foundaon which builds condence, develops knowledge and shares good pracce in engaging people with lived experience in charity work.“The strategy has been developed through true partnership working between representaves of the Government of Jersey and Demena Jersey and draws strongly on the voices of islanders, parcularly those with lived experiences of demena, whilst drawing on local and global evidence. Our frontline teams from engineering, retail, our contact centre and HR have deepened their understanding of demena through the Demena Jersey workshop. They’ve learned to recognise the signs and respond thoughully to those living with the condion. We’re always incredibly proud of our people’s interest and willingness to make themselves more aware, all of which benets not only our customers but also their loved ones and the wider community. Each parcipant has truly earned their Demena Jersey badge and we’d really encourage other workplaces to help make Jersey a more demena-friendly place’’.11A dementia friendly business is a business that is aware of the needs and challenges of people living with demena and adjusts its products, services, and environment to accommodate them.A demena friendly business can benet from:• increased customer loyalty• improved reputaon• enhanced sta morale.Becoming a demena friendly business is straighorward, though it may require some adjustments over me to some parts of how a business runs itself.
