We know that having a diagnosis of demena or caring for someone with demena can be dicult at mes and that talking things through can really help. What is counselling?Counselling is a talking therapy that gives you the opportunity to speak in condence and at depth to a trained professional who will help you explore any thoughts, feelings, or worries about the future that are troubling you. Talking things through in this way can bring more clarity to complicated situaons and troubling thoughts and feelings. This can then help you feel stronger and more condent to help you nd a way ahead. You can see a counsellor for just one session, or for several sessions over several weeks, with sessions usually lasng about an hour.Who is this service for? This service is for people with demena and family carers. People usually speak with the counsellor privately, but couples and families can also aend together to talk about issues that are aecng them. Where and when would I see a counsellor? You should be able to see a counsellor within one or two weeks of contacng us. Appointments can be made at a me to suit you, usually at our oce in St Helier, but if it is not possible for you to come to our oce, we can in certain circumstances, visit you at home or in a care home. How do I arrange to see a counsellor? To make an appointment to see a counsellor, or just to have a chat to see if counselling might be helpful for you, please phone or email Demena Jersey.Tel: 01534 723519 Email: info@demena.je7CounsellingServiceWe’re here to listenIt’s good to talk

Each month we host a range of Carer’s Support Meengs for family and friends who are caring for someone with demena. Meengs take place in a variety of venues and at dierent mes. They are held in a relaxed seng and include refreshments and the chance for you to meet with other carers. Demena Advisors are on hand at each meeng for an informal chat and to answer any quesons. You’re welcome to join all or just one of the sessions and you can invite another family member or friend to join you if you wish. Our carers have told us how helpful these meengs are and have welcomed the friendship and support from their fellow carers. Our demena advisors are also available for one-to-one appointments. Our free, friendly, supporve groups are open to anyone supporng or caring for a relave or friend with demena. They are informal opportunies to meet others over a cup of coee. Our Demena Advisor team aend these meengs and will be happy to chat with you too. The Meeting PlaceProjectHelping you to adapt to a diagnosis of dementia. At Dementia Jersey we understand that geng a diagnosis of demena is dierent for everyone. For some people this can be daunting and emotionally overwhelming, whilst others have described some sense of relief that they finally have answers for the symptoms they have been experiencing. Many people with dementia want to nd ways to cope with these symptoms, look for ways to stay healthy and stimulate their memory and thinking skills.10Demena has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts, not only for people living with demena, but also for their carers, families and society at large.Did you Did you know?know?

We also explore ways to stimulate memory and thinking skills, build self-esteem and keep our bodies healthy.Wondering whether this group is right for you?The Meeting Place Project is: A group for people with mild symptoms of demena A place to meet others with dementia for advice and support An opportunity to learn about symptoms and ways to manage them A place where you can take part in brain smulang acvies, including language and number games, discussions about living with dementia and light physical exercise. How to sign up to the Meeting Place ProjectA diagnosis of dementia and a good level of independence is required to join the Meeting Place Project.Suitability for the group will then be explored through a face-to-face meeting.Membership is reviewed periodically and due to the progressive nature of dementia there may come a time when members no longer qualify for the group; in this situaon people will be consulted and supported into other activities oered by Dementia Jersey if they wish to do so.For an informal discussion and to apply to attend please email Dementia Jersey at info@dementia.je or call us on 01534 723519Currently we host four Meeng Place Projects each week.Monday morning • St HelierMonday afternoon • St MarnThursday morning • St BreladeFriday morning • St Clement11

Testimonials“When my husband was diagnosed with demena earlier this year, it was very frightening and I have never felt so alone. My friends were there for me, but no one quite understands what it is like to live and care for someone with demena unl it happens to them. A friend told me to contact Dementia Jersey and I spoke at length with an advisor who was absolutely wonderful; it was as though a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I now know there is always someone there to listen if I am feeling low and the weekly Carers’ Meetings they hold are enormously helpful. Dementia Jersey is such a huge support.” Anonymous“When dementia is nally confirmed, even though you know it is happening, it’s still quite a shock. When my husband was diagnosed, I got in touch with Dementia Jersey and immediately felt safe in the knowledge that they could answer many of my quesons. My husband attends the Meeng Place Project and I know he enjoys them as there is no pressure. It also means that any change will be noticed. The care you receive from the charity takes away a lot of fear carers feel for the future so am very grateful for this service.” Anonymous“My experience with Demena Jersey has been hugely beneficial, whilst coping with my wife’s journey with dementia.
