For some people this can be daunng and emoonally overwhelming, whilst other people have described some sense of relief that they nally have answers for the symptoms they have been experiencing. Many people with demena want to nd ways to cope with these symptoms, look for ways to stay healthy and smulate their memory and thinking skills.14
This is why we’ve created The Meeting Place ProjectThe project oers varied sessions that provide an opportunity to share experiences and talk with other people in similar situaons. Ann’s StoryMeet Ann Morel. Ann joined our art exploraon group in 2021 which helped reignite her passion for drawing and Ann has since joined some of our other acvies, including Coee & Connect and our Meeng Place Project.Ann was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Demena in 2019, although symptoms rst started in 2015. Ann experienced diculty with speech and headaches and while previously Ann loved to draw and created some amazing art, when the headaches started, she sadly stopped drawing. Throughout the journey to diagnosis, Ann’s husband Frank began to noce things weren’t quite right at home and he noced Ann was losing her condence. While they were relieved to have a diagnosis, this le Ann feeling frightened to leave the house, further aecng her condence with speaking, answering the phone and most of all, aecng her passion to draw. Since joining Demena Jersey acvies, Ann has been able to socialise with other people with demena and take part in brain smulang acvies paired with speech therapy. As a result, she started to answer the phone again, was less frightened to go out and has started creang art at home again. This transformaon to her condence levels was one of the posive changes that have helped both her and Frank. We are delighted to have been able to support Ann and Frank through this journey and help reignite Ann’s creave spark.16
“As a carer, life has got a lot easier thanks to Demena Jersey. It’s great because I can leave Ann to get on with art and chat away without a worry. It’s taken a lot of stress o. TestimonialsTestimonials“When my husband was diagnosed with demena earlier this year, it was very frightening and I have never felt so alone. My friends were there for me, but no one quite understands what it is like to live and care for someone with demena unl it happens to them. A friend told me to contact Demena Jersey and I spoke at length with an advisor who was absolutely wonderful; it was as though a huge weight was lied from my shoulders. I now know there is always someone there to listen if I am feeling low and the weekly Carers’ Meengs they hold are enormously helpful. Demena Jersey is such a huge support.” – Anonymous“When demena is nally conrmed, even though you know it is happening, it’s sll quite a shock. When my husband was diagnosed, I got in touch with Demena Jersey and immediately felt safe in the knowledge that they could answer many of my quesons.
