We’re a local charity commied to supporng people with demena and the family and friends caring for them. There are around 1,600 people living with demena in Jersey and with an ageing populaon this number is expected to double within a generaon. Our overall aim is to work together with others to create an island where those aected by demena are supported, accepted and able to live well without sgma. From small beginnings in 2010 with only two members of sta, Demena Jersey has grown into a leading charity in Jersey, proving a lifeline for islanders with demena and their families. In 2022 we had over 6,500 aendances at our support groups and acvies.We provide support and advice on demena, raise awareness and campaign to improve services for people with demena and those who care for them. We are here whenever we are needed, providing support and guidance from pre-diagnosis unl the end of the journey, no maer what the level or type of demena.Demena Jersey run a range of demena friendly acvies every week, which are all very popular and there are full details on them in this guide. We also hold regular support groups for carers, with meengs held at various mes and locaons. We also oer demena training and educaon sessions for individuals and businesses who wish to have a beer awareness of demena.2WhoWho we are we are

AdviceAdvice and Supportand SupportDemena Advice is a service provided by Demena Jersey which gives people the chance to talk with a trained professional about any subject related to demena. This can be with or without the person with demena being present and can be for just a brief chat or for support over a much longer me.Meengs with a Demena Advisor can be in our oces, by phone, zoom or email and can either be one-to-one or include your whole family, including the person with demena, if this is helpful. Whilst our Demena Advisors can’t tell you what to do, they are knowledgeable about all aspects of demena, health services, Social Security benets, the Long Term Care Scheme, Powers of Aorney, Capacity and much more, so can provide you with useful informaon and point you in the right direcon for other help you may need.3Did you Did you know?know? As well as one-to-one support, Demena Jersey also provide a range of support groups and acvies to support people with demena, carers and family members.

Each month we host a range of Carer’s Support Meengs aimed at family and friends who are caring for someone with demena. Meengs take place in a variety of venues and at dierent mes. They are held in a relaxed seng and include refreshments and the chance for you to meet with other carers. Demena Advisors are on hand at each meeng for an informal chat and to answer any quesons. You’re welcome to join all or just one of the sessions and you can invite another family member or friend to join you if you wish. Our carers have told us how helpful these meengs are and have welcomed the friendship and support from their fellow carers. Our demena advisors are also available for one-to-one appointments. 4Carers’ SupportCarers’ SupportMeetingsMeetingsDemena is the fastest growing disease on the island and the Government predict that cases will double by 2036.Did you Did you know?know?

The Meeting PlaceThe Meeting PlaceProjectProjectDementia Jersey’s special programme that oers people the opportunity to share experiences with others in a similar situaon.At Demena Jersey we understand that geng a diagnosis of demena is dierent for everyone. For some people this can be daunng and emoonally overwhelming, whilst other people have described some sense of relief that they nally have answers for the symptoms they have been experiencing. Many people with demena want to nd ways to cope with these symptoms, look for ways to stay healthy and smulate their memory and thinking skills.14

Page 15

This is why we’ve created The Meeting Place ProjectThe project oers varied sessions that provide an opportunity to share experiences and talk with other people in similar situaons. We also explore ways to smulate memory and thinking skills, build self-esteem andkeep our bodies healthyWondering whether this group is right for you?The Meeting Place Project is:• A group for people with mild symptoms of demena.• A place to meet others with dementia for advice and support.• Learn about symptoms and ways to manage them.• Take part in brain smulang acvies, including language and number games, discussions about living with dementia and light physical exercise. How to sign up to the Meeting Place ProjectA diagnosis of demena and a good level of independence is required to join the Meeng Place Project.Suitability for the group will then be explored through a follow-up face-to-face meeng.Membership is reviewed periodically and due to the progressive nature of dementia there may come a me when members no longer qualify for the group; in this situaon people will be consulted and supported into other acvies oered by Dementia Jersey if they wish to do so.For an informal discussion and to apply to aend please email Demena Jersey at info@dementia.je or call us on 01534 723519Currently we host three Meeng Place Projects each week, all are morning sessions on the following days.Mondays: 10:00am - 12:30pmThursdays: 10:00am - 12:30pmFridays: 10:00am - 12:30pm15

Ann’s StoryMeet Ann Morel. Ann joined our art exploraon group in 2021 which helped reignite her passion for drawing and Ann has since joined some of our other acvies, including Coee & Connect and our Meeng Place Project.Ann was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Demena in 2019, although symptoms rst started in 2015. Ann experienced diculty with speech and headaches and while previously Ann loved to draw and created some amazing art, when the headaches started, she sadly stopped drawing. Throughout the journey to diagnosis, Ann’s husband Frank began to noce things weren’t quite right at home and he noced Ann was losing her condence. While they were relieved to have a diagnosis, this le Ann feeling frightened to leave the house, further aecng her condence with speaking, answering the phone and most of all, aecng her passion to draw. Since joining Demena Jersey acvies, Ann has been able to socialise with other people with demena and take part in brain smulang acvies paired with speech therapy. As a result, she started to answer the phone again, was less frightened to go out and has started creang art at home again. This transformaon to her condence levels was one of the posive changes that have helped both her and Frank. We are delighted to have been able to support Ann and Frank through this journey and help reignite Ann’s creave spark.16

TestimonialsTestimonials“When my husband was diagnosed with demena earlier this year, it was very frightening and I have never felt so alone. My friends were there for me, but no one quite understands what it is like to live and care for someone with demena unl it happens to them. A friend told me to contact Demena Jersey and I spoke at length with an advisor who was absolutely wonderful; it was as though a huge weight was lied from my shoulders. I now know there is always someone there to listen if I am feeling low and the weekly Carers’ Meengs they hold are enormously helpful. Demena Jersey is such a huge support.” – Anonymous“When demena is nally conrmed, even though you know it is happening, it’s sll quite a shock. When my husband was diagnosed, I got in touch with Demena Jersey and immediately felt safe in the knowledge that they could answer many of my quesons. My husband aends the Meeng Place Project and I know he enjoys them as there is no pressure. It also means that any change will be noced. The care you receive from the charity takes away a lot of fear carers feel for the future so am very grateful for this service.” – Anonymous“My experience with Demena Jersey has been hugely benecial, whilst coping with my wife’s journey with demena.
