10 Texoma Parent Magazine As the holiday season approaches, the air fills with anticipation, joy, and, for many moms, anunderlying sense of anxiety. The pressure to create picture-perfect, social media-worthy momentscan be overwhelming. With Instagram feeds filled with meticulously decorated trees, beautifullywrapped gifts, and smiling children in matching pajamas, it's easy to feel the weight of expectation. But the reality is often far from these curated images. Many moms grapple with guilt, wondering ifthey measure up or if their efforts will make the cut in the digital realm. This guilt is fueled by the troubling notion that a perfectly captured moment equates to aperfect holiday. Social media platforms, while offering community and connection, can also amplifyfeelings of inadequacy. The truth is, no filtered snapshot can capture the essence of genuine familyexperiences—the laughter, the small mishaps, and the spontaneous joy that often comes from theunexpected. It's important to remember that these unplanned moments are where true holidaymagic resides. To combat this pressure, moms should prioritize being present over perfection. Engaging withfamily away from the lens, setting realistic expectations, and acknowledging that not everymoment needs to be 'post-worthy' can alleviate significant stress. Sharing real stories, completewith their imperfections, not only brings authenticity to social media but also fosters a moregenuine connection with others who are likely feeling the same pressures. Ultimately, the holidays should be about creating meaningful memories, not just capturing them.By embracing authenticity and letting go of the need to impress, moms can focus on what trulymatters: the love and laughter that fills their homes, regardless of how it appears online. After all,the most cherished memories are often those that are felt, not just seen.Navigating Holiday Guilt: A Mom's Guide toLetting Go of Social Media PressureLooking to make a meaningful impactand promote your brand? The holiday season is a time brimming with joy, family traditions, and, of course, theexcitement of gift-giving. But as parents, it’s important to guide our children beyond thesurface-level celebrations and help them understand the deeper significance of Christmas.Through intentional actions and thoughtful conversations, we can teach them thatChristmas is more than just about receiving presents—it’s about love, gratitude, and givingback. One of the most meaningful ways, if you are Christian, is to introduce our children to thetrue essence of Christmas is through the story of Jesus’ birth. Christmas holds profoundcultural and religious significance, and reading Bible passages together can offer children aglimpse into the holiday’s origins. The nativity story is rich with history and meaning, makingit a perfect tool for sparking deeper conversations. As you read, take the time to discuss thekey figures—Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men—and highlight the pivotal rolesthey played in ensuring the safety and sanctity of the birth of Christ. By doing so, childrencan begin to understand that Christmas is rooted in hope, faith, and a deep sense ofcommunity. In addition to understanding the story behind the holiday, Christmas is also a time tocelebrate togetherness. Family and friends gather to share meals, exchange gifts, and makelasting memories. This season provides an ideal opportunity to talk to our children about theimportance of love and the bonds that connect us. Encourage them to appreciate themoments spent with loved ones, and remind them that Christmas is as much about beingpresent as it is about the presents we give. When children see us prioritizing time spent withfamily over material items, they learn that the value of relationships far outweighs anythingwe could wrap in a box. Equally important to the holiday spirit is the act of giving. While the commercialization ofChristmas often focuses on material gifts, we should encourage our children to view givingas something much more profound. Involve them in acts of kindness and generosity, whether it’s donating toys to a shelter, volunteering at a food bank, or simply baking cookiesfor a neighbor. These actions serve as a reminder that giving isn’t always about tangibleobjects—it’s about sharing joy, compassion, and love. By showing children that givingextends beyond the holiday season, we help them cultivate a mindset of generosity thatlasts long after the decorations come down.12 Texoma Parent MagazineHelping Children Understand the True Meaning of ChristmasBeyond the Presents:

Page 13

13 Texoma Parent Magazine However, teaching our children the true meaning of Christmas is not just about what wesay—it’s about what we do. Children are keen observers, and they often learn as much fromour actions as they do from our words. If we want them to embrace kindness, generosity, and gratitude, we must model these behaviors in our everyday lives. Whether it’s offering ahelping hand to a friend, speaking kindly to a stranger, or showing empathy to those in need, our children will internalize these actions and adopt them as their own. When they see usliving out the values of Christmas, they are more likely to grow up embodying those sameprinciples. Ultimately, helping our children understand the true meaning of Christmas is one of themost rewarding aspects of parenthood. By reading meaningful stories, encouraging acts ofkindness, and modeling the behaviors we wish to instill, we can teach our children toappreciate the holiday in a way that goes beyond material gifts. In doing so, we raise the nextgeneration to be more compassionate, thoughtful, and aware of the world around them. Thisholiday season, let’s not just give our children presents—let’s give them the gift ofunderstanding what Christmas is truly about. Another valuable lesson to impart during the holidays is gratitude. The holiday seasonprovides a natural opportunity to reflect on the things we are thankful for. Encourage yourchildren to express their gratitude, whether it’s for their family, their friends, or the simplepleasures of the season. One way to foster this practice is by sitting down together eachnight in December to talk about the blessings in your lives. When children regularly hearexpressions of thankfulness, they begin to internalize the importance of appreciating whatthey have. Gratitude nurtures a sense of happiness, contentment, and compassion—valuesthat align perfectly with the spirit of Christmas.

Balancing being a working parent14 Texoma Parent Magazine Being a parent during the holiday season is already hard enough. How do we balance the workload with our holiday responsibilities? “Being a working parent is not easy. You have to be willing to screwup at every level.” Jami Gertz.The holiday season, a time traditionally filled withjoy and connection, can be a particularlystressful period for working parents. With thedemands of work ramping up due to projectdeadlines and the added pressure of maintainingfamily traditions and celebrations, finding abalance between professional obligations andpersonal responsibilities can feel overwhelming. As someone who has navigated this challenge, Ireached out to several working parents to learn how they successfully manage the delicate juggling act of work and home life during theholidays. Despite their diverse experiences, they all shared a common piece of advice: "Leavework at the door." This advice, though seemingly simple, raised an important question for me:How exactly do you do that when work demands are at their peak? The answer, it turns out, lies in setting boundaries, prioritizing, and taking intentional steps to create a separationbetween work and family life. One essential piece of advice I received was to limit work communication outside of designatedwork hours. This could be as simple as refraining from checking work emails after office hours. With the constant connection offered by smartphones and digital devices, it is easy for work tocreep into personal time, leading to increased stress and mental exhaustion. By choosing not tocheck emails or answer work-related messages after hours, parents can create a buffer betweenthe demands of work and the need to focus on family. One effective strategy to help achieve thisseparation is to use a separate messaging app or email account for work-relatedcommunication. This way, parents can easily distinguish between work and personal messages, ensuring that work responsibilities remain within the boundaries of office hours.

Page 15

15 Texoma Parent MagazineSetting clear boundaries is another strategy that many parents find helpful in maintaining ahealthy work-life balance during the holidays. One parent shared that they communicated to theircoworkers when they would and would not be available to discuss work matters. By firmlyestablishing these boundaries, they were able to maintain focus on their family during off-hours,while also setting expectations with their coworkers. This approach not only allowed them tobetter enjoy their personal time, but it also ensured that work-related issues were handled duringthe designated hours, reducing the potential for interruptions. Having a set time to address worktasks gave them peace of mind, knowing they could fully commit to family activities without beingconstantly distracted by work demands.Another helpful strategy that was shared with me was the creation of a transitional ritual to helpease the mental shift from work to home life. For one parent, this ritual was as simple as listeningto a specific song on their commute home. The song served as a cue that the workday had ended, allowing them to mentally and emotionally "clock out" and prepare to transition into family mode. This small act provided a sense of closure to the workday, making it easier to leave the stress ofwork behind and fully engage with their family. Whether it’s taking a few deep breaths, going for ashort walk, or engaging in another relaxing activity, having a ritual helps to clear the mind andsignal the end of work responsibilities.Beyond setting boundaries and rituals, prioritizing family activities during the holiday season iscrucial to achieving balance. Treating family time with the same level of importance as work taskshelps ensure that neither aspect of life overshadows the other. For example, parents mightschedule time for holiday traditions, such as decorating the tree or attending festive events, in thesame way they would schedule a work meeting or deadline. By doing so, they are able to createlasting memories with their loved ones while still fulfilling their professional responsibilities. Thisapproach emphasizes the importance of being intentional with one’s time, ensuring that both workand family are given the attention they deserve. Finally, it’s important to remember that being a parent is inherently stressful, especially during theholidays. While the pressures of work can feel overwhelming, it’s essential to recognize that as longas parents are trying their best, they are doing the best job for their children. Perfection is not thegoal—what matters most is the effort to be present, engaged, and loving. Whether it’s finding waysto disconnect from work or prioritizing meaningful moments with family, working parents shouldgive themselves grace and acknowledge that balancing both worlds is no small feat.In conclusion, the holiday season doesn’t have to be a time of stress and burnout for workingparents. By setting boundaries, creating rituals to transition between work and home life, andprioritizing family time, parents can create a more harmonious balance between their professionaland personal responsibilities. Most importantly, parents should remember that their efforts tobalance work and family, no matter how imperfect, are the best gift they can give to their children. As long as parents are present and doing their best, they are providing their families with the mostmeaningful experience of all during the holiday season.

It’s no secret that the holidays are stressful for everyone. Stress can impact the healthof an individual's hair. Taking a few minutes to treat yourself can be almost impossibleduring the holiday season. This time of year we all want to look our best, it’s filled withfamily gathering, pictures, and meetings. We all start reaching for hot tools, hair color, and other hairstyles. All of this plays a role in the health of your hair. Here are sometips to help you during this busy season. Get to know your hair. Understanding yourhair type and issues is the first step to achieving your healthiest hair possible. Detoxyour scalp. This means ridding your scalp of all the gunk build up to allow your hairfollicles to flourish. Try to avoid over washing. Over washing can create unwantedside effects such as greasy strands, breakage, dry scalp, and even hair loss.Incorporate a scalp massage in your hair care routine. Using the tips of your fingers, gently press and move your fingers in a circular motion-this stimulates the follicles. This motion also stretches the follicles and encourages thicker, stronger hair growth. It’s also very relaxing. Another important thing is stay hydrated! Those eight glasses ofwater our P.E. teacher in elementary school stressed about is important. Your agingstrands need more hydration to fight dryness during the cold months. Continuingwith hydration, moisture is so important in the winter months. There's nothing like asuper-hydrating hair mask to instantly make your hair look better. What you put intoyour body is just as important as what you put on it. You are what you eat. Yes, that’sright, what you eat matters. Eat a balanced healthy diet. However sometimes diets fallshort of delivering all the nutrients our hair needs. Sometimes supplements areessential to help with a healthy hair journey. Please consult your doctor before takingany supplements. Lastly, your state of mind makes a difference regarding hair growthand the overall health of your hair. Happiness and a positive perspective not onlymakes life more enjoyable, but can also help reduce stress- which works wonders forsupporting healthy new hair grow. Homeschool Moment:Christmas School24 Texoma Parent MagazineMy homeschool journey has been a whirlwind of chaos, curriculum, and co-ops. As a mom who oncedeclared, "I would never homeschool my boys," I found myself amazed by the depth of thehomeschooling world. The research felt endless, and at times, overwhelming. I was introduced toeducational philosophies like Montessori, Charlotte Mason, and Waldorf, and questions keptswirling: Are we a traditional workbook family? What’s the difference between unschooling anddeschooling? Do we really need a rigid schedule? What happens if we’re months into a curriculumand hate every minute of it? Amid the questions, frustrations, and unexpected challenges, Idiscovered something beautiful—something that became the anchor of our school year: ChristmasSchool. For a month each year, I get to take a break from the structured routine of our day-to-dayhomeschool and focus on the joys of the season. The magic of Christmas School is that it’scompletely customized for my two boys, and it looks different for every family. But for us, it's ahighlight of the year, a time when we completely shift gears. We kick off our Christmas School theday after Thanksgiving, when we pull out the decorations and fill our home with a sea of red trinkets. As the tree goes up, so does our excitement for the season. Our homeschool supplies, too, take on afestive transformation. We put away our usual textbooks and history lessons and dive into culturalstudies through holiday celebrations. Language arts shifts from workbooks to Christmas stories, andour logic puzzles feature Santa’s sleigh team. In our home, baking plays a big role in our learning. Westudy chemistry through the art of holiday pastries from around the world, discussing why somecookies rise and others become crisp. The kitchen becomes our classroom, and each recipe teachesus something new about fractions, measurements, and the cultural significance of food.Decorating for Christmas is a tradition many families around the world cherish. For us, it’s more thanjust setting up a tree—it’s about setting the tone for the season. My children eagerly hangornaments, sing carols, and make their Christmas wish lists. My husband joins in the fun, planningsome overtime so that he can help make the holidays extra special for all of us.As we hang the last ornament, I take a moment to reflect on the bittersweet feeling of the season.Decorating the house was once a magical experience for me as a child, and now, I get to createthat magic for my own kids. That, to me, is the joy of Christmas School.

Page 25

25 Texoma Parent MagazineBut the magic of Christmas School goes beyond decorations and treats. It’s not just about visitingSanta or admiring holiday lights. It’s about how we embrace the season in every part of ourhomeschool. And it’s not just for homeschool families—it’s for anyone looking to make the holidayseason more meaningful. In our homeschool, workbooks aren’t the main focus during Christmas School. Instead, wecelebrate by putting away the usual curriculum and diving into red and green-themed unitstudies. We explore the rich traditions of Christmas across the world and the roots of our ownfamily customs.Creativity thrives in December, and we get to explore it through writing. Our boys help us createnew adventures for Santa’s reindeer, the elf on the shelf, and even Biscuit, our mischievous littleelf. We write side stories and imagine what these beloved characters do when they aren’t on theirholiday missions.Baking is another creative outlet, and it’s one of our favorite ways to bond as a family. FromGermany’s gingerbread houses to Mexico’s buñuelos, we love exploring the festive treats ofdifferent cultures. Baking not only gives us the opportunity to learn about world cultures, but italso teaches my children valuable math skills as we measure and adjust recipes. As a family, we’ve found that it’s not the presents or the decorations that make Christmas special. It’s the opportunity to reflect on the deeper meaning of the season. Through our study of Advent,we explore the themes of hope, joy, peace, and love, and how they relate to the birth of Jesus. In our homeschool, Advent is more than just a countdown to Christmas—it’s a time for spiritualreflection and growth. Each week, we focus on one of the themes of Advent. In the first week, westudy the hope that the Israelites had as they waited for their Messiah, and how we can find hopein Christ today. Week two brings us joy, not as fleeting happiness, but as the deep joy that comesfrom knowing Christ. We use hymn studies to remind ourselves of the joy His birth brought to theworld. In week three, we explore peace—the peace that comes from Christ, especially in the face of grief, stress, and the pressures of the season. Finally, week four focuses on the love of Christ, demonstrated through His birth and His eventual sacrifice on the cross. This is the true meaningof Christmas for our family, and the heart of what makes Christmas School so special. As you prepare for the holiday season, I encourage youto consider adding a little Christmas School to yourroutine.
