December 9, 2022ג״פשת ולסכ ו’’טחלשיו תשרפ DEFINING SUCCESS3:53 PMDear Parents,לכותו םישנאו םיקולא םע תירש יכ After ferrying his family across the Yabok, Yaakov returns to retrieve some small jugs that he had forgotten on the other side. While alone, he was confronted by a malach who wrestled with him through the night. The angel realized he could not overcome Yaakov, and at daybreak, the angel informed Yaakov that since he wrestled with an angel of Hashem and with men and emerged victorious, his name would bechanged from Yaakov to Yisrael Rashi explains the word Anashim as referring to Yaakov’s triumph over Eisav and Lavan. This begs the question: Was Yaakov truly victorious over Eisav? The beginning of this week’s parsha describes the substantial gift Yaakov felt compelled to bribe Eisav with, and how he lowered himself to bow to his wicked brother in an attempt to placate him. It seemed like it was Eisav who emerged from this encounterwith an intact ego while Yaakov resorted to flattery to capitulate to his brother Harav Moshe Soleveitchik ztz”l answers that there is a fundamental misunderstanding that exists regarding the definition of Hatzlacha – success. Success or victory is not defined as subduing or crushing.the other side. Rather it is viewed in terms of one’s objective Yaakov’s goal was to pursue his Avodas Hashem and raise his children to continue in the legacy transmitted by his father Yitzchak and grandfather Avraham. If the only way to accomplish that objective was by bribing Eisav and humbling himself in front of him, so be it. Yaakov was able to keep his eyes on the ‘prize’; he focused on the larger picture. And he was successful at achieving his overarching goal..Therefore, the Torah describes Yaakov as successful A critical lesson can be extended from this to other areas of life and especially the Chinuch of our children. There are times, when as parents, we need to focus on the larger picture, and our overall objective. Even if the means we use to achieve our goal may not be our ideal vision of the journey wewish our children to take, if we achieve our objective the Torah defines that as a success! תבש טוגRabbi Ochs● Mazel Tov to the 1st grade boys that had their Chumash Mesiba today!
