December 22, 2023ד״פשת תבט ’י שגיו תשרפ ACCEPT 3:57 PMDear Parents,Parshas Mikeitz concluded with dramatic episode of Yosef’s messenger overtaking the brothers on their return trip home and ‘discovering’ Yosef’s goblet in Binyamin’s bag. This would presumably require the brothers to leave Binyamin in Mitzrayim and return home empty-handed to their inconsolable father.Parshas Vayigash begins with Yehudah’s heartrending plea for mercy for Binyamin based on the potentially fatal consequence to Yaakov, his father, if he returns without Binyamin.Upon hearing this, Yosef becomes so overwhelmed with emotion that he can no longer restrain himself: ילעמ שיא לכ ואיצוה ארקיו ...׳כו קפאתהל ףסוי לוכי אלו. Yosef gives a directive that everyone leave the room so as not to embarrass his brothers, until ויחא לא ףסוי עדותהב ותא שיא דמע אלו – no one else remained in the room.Yosef was the ךלמל הנשמ. If he ordered the removal of all the other men from the room, isn’t it self-evident that no one would remain and violate his command? Why does the Torah then emphasize ותא שיא דמע אלו – no one remained? The Meforshim answer that human nature is that when a person is faced with a very challenging situation to avoid the discomfort of grappling with the issue, he seeks a scapegoat or excuse to blame his situation. He reasons to himself that had circumstances been different or if certain individuals had not been involved, things would have turned out differently. This approach to a challenge displays a lack of Emunah and bitachon in Hashem. Someone who truly believes, trusts that everything occurring in his life emanates from Hashem will not look to rationalize or excuse events in his life.Yosef could have certainly chosen that path: His father instructed him to travel to Shechem to check on his brothers wellbeing. When he arrived there, they were nowhere to be found. At this point he could have returned home to his father without locating his brothers. The Torah recounts that at this point, he met an שיא in Shechem who, according to Chazal, was the לאירבג ךאלמ. The man informed him that his brothers were in Dosan, and Yosef traveled after them. Upon his arrival the story of his sale into slavery began and his ultimate rise to power. When Yosef revealed himself to his brothers and explained the entire complex chain of events, it would have been natural for him to put some blame on someone. Yet Yosef chose the lofty route. He did not blame anyone, but instead acknowledged that everything that happened was simply another part of Hashem’s Masterplan. This is what the Torah means to emphasize when it says ותא שיא דמע אלו. He didn’t blame anyone, not even the שיא, he accepted that it was all from Hashem. Many times, when faced with a challenge we try convincing ourselves that had we or others acted differently, the outcome may have been different. Yosef is teaching us to accept Hashem’s decree, because it ultimately is all for our good.תבש טוג!
