December 2, 2022ג״פשת ולסכ ’חאציו תשרפ GOLUS CHALLENGE3:54 PMDear Parents,אוה הקבר ןב יכו אוה היבא יחא יכ לחרל בקעי דגיו Yaakov told Rachel that he was her father’s nephew and that he was Rivkah’s son. This seems to be a redundant statement. It would have been sufficient for Yaakov to inform Rachel that he was Rivkah’s son. The obvious deduction would then be that he was Lavan’s nephew. The Medrash explains these two phrases and referencing specific characteristics. If Lavan would act towards Yaakov with trickery, Yaakov was letting Rachel know that he was Lavan’s brother in deceit. However, if Lavan chooses to be upright and honest, I, Yaakov, will act as a son of Rivkah, with yashrus. The שודקה םייחה רוא explains this Medrash. Yaakov was not saying that these were two alternative paths of behavior for him to adopt. Yaakov was surely not opting to become a trickster like Lavan. Yaakov was clarifying to Rachel to relate to Lavan that as resourceful as Lavan is in deceit he could be equally adept at protecting himself from Lavan’s wiles. At the same time, he is a son of Rivkah of impeccable character and Middos Tovos. Yaakov will not stoop to act like Lavan or be influenced by his character. This was the challenge and nisayon that Yaakov faced daily in Lavan’s house for 20 years: never to cross the boundary of doing what needed to be done to protect himself while not being personally impacted in any way. In today’s world and throughout the ages this has been our constant challenge. We have to interact with the world we live in with all its challenges and opportunities, but at the same time retain our הקבר ןב: never allow the distorted value system of the world impact our value system despite the near constant bombardment via technology, entertainment and many other means.! תבש טוגRabbi Ochs● Mazel tov to Moshe Aryeh Riesel, Nochum Dessler, and Avrumi Halpern who finished seder zerayim mishnayos.
