BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …Keep Reading!CarolePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5December 2023• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole It is very hard to believe but it is Christmas Time once again. I can never get over how time  ies by when you get to a certain age, one that I have exceeded by many years, I might add! What do you think of when you think of Christmas? I suppose that it might evoke many different feelings in people. Every year I always believe that my Christmases are going to be just as picture perfect as every magazine and television advert I see, everyone having the best time imaginable. I have no idea why I think that – when I know when that magical day rolls around that it will be over-eating and arguing over the insigni cant!I was thinking about this when I reviewed the Bulletin Christmas content. The front cover – a donkey, both seasonal and traditional but we are also featuring an article by Steve Trim, discussing invertebrates on pages 19 – 23, speci cally tarantulas. Neither traditional nor seasonal but a subject that is both fascinating and likely to inspire as many emotions as Christmas in people and probably very different reactions! This article also marks the beginning of a collaboration between the IAT and the Veterinary Invertebrate Society, which I hope will raise awareness of the husbandry and welfare of this highly diverse phyla of animals.I am very fond of re ecting around this time of year, especially as I retired earlier on in the year and I have had time to look back on the changes I have seen in the thirty- ve years I have been in this business. Most of those changes have been very positive – consideration of the wellbeing of invertebrates is one such transformation. Changes in both husbandry practice and understanding of the needs of rodents has also been phenomenal. One area currently undergoing a revolutionary change is that of the role of the technician, read the report on pages 13 – 16 and consider attending the Technician Wellbeing Workshop on the opposite page because we will be looking at this area in much more detail throughout 2024.I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year andNOT SO ‘BLUE MONDAY’The date may be termed the ‘bleakest day of the year’but we guarantee to brighten it via virtual meeting platformon 15th January 2024 from 13.00 – 16.00 hrs for a TECHNICIAN WELLBEINGWORKSHOPhaving a Culture of Care shouldn’t stop with the animalsJoin us to discuss how we can improve wellbeing within our industryGuest Speakers:Penny Hawkins RSPCAHaley Daniels IATJonathon Wood DatesandAngela Kerton The Learning CurveMaizy Jenner University of ManchesterAnneke Keizer CopeplusDon’t miss out on this unique opportunity to learn aboutthe latest advancements in Technician WellbeingYou will also have the opportunity to ask questionsduring the Q&A sessionsFor more information or to book your place, please use this QR code or visithttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/technician-wellbeing-workshop-tickets-746961220117?aff=oddtdtcreator

BulletinDecember 2023 • 9 Andrew Blake Tribute Award (ABTA)The closing date for the ABTA was 20th October. The winner of the ABTA will receive free attendance at Congress 2024 – to display their winning poster along with a glass plaque and monetary prize. The ABTA was previously sponsored by the ABPI, who on reviewing their funding commitments, have decided not to continue. We are delighted that the NC3Rs have taken on the sponsorship and we look forward to working with them in the future.Tech MonthThe Communications Group confirmed that there will not be an official IAT lead Tech Month in 2024, instead, the photo competition will run.The reasons for not holding a Tech Month are to have a break and keep everything a little fresher. There is nothing to stop Branches or establishments holding their own events and ideas and suggestions will be available on the IAT website. Further details on Tech Month and the photo competition will be published in a future issue of the Bulletin.Congress Branch RaffleThe Branch Liaison Committee (BLC) met in September and discussed the Branch Raffle held at Congress each year. It was agreed that in future all Branches would propose a recipient charity for the raffle proceeds. Council would choose the winning nomination and the Branch who chose that charity would organise the raffle that year.Congress 2024Registrations for Congress 2024 opened on 4th September and the early bird rate will be available until 1st December 2023. All details for Congress 2024 can be found on the IAT website. Once registered, hotel and travel details will be available to delegates. Bulletin18 • December 2023 ‘TAI’ the IAT Guide DogAs we all know, every year at Congress, the Branches organise a raffle to raise funds for a charity. At Congress 2015, Guide Dogs was chosen and largely through the fund-raising efforts of Margaret Skeoch, £2,400 was raised and made up to £2,500 by Council. This allowed us to name a guide dog puppy. Tai (IAT spelt backwards, for those of you who wonder where the name comes from) was born on 19th June 2015 and after passing all of her training became the guide dog of Lora Fachie.Below is an update on Tai and Lora – it seems to have been a busy and exciting year for them both!Paralympic cyclist Lora Fachie is a World Champion, a World Record holder, a gold medallist, and partner to guide dog Tai who was named and supported through the generosity of IAT members. It has been a busy year for Lora as she recently became a mother and qualified for the Cycling World Championships in August. She and Tai also enjoyed a visit to Windsor Castle in October where she received her OBE from Anne, Princess Royal. Along with royal visits Tai has become a bit of a regular at the BBC studios accompanying Lora in a TV first as she became the first person to read a CBeebies bedtime story in braille. With Tai at her feet she read The Secret Code, a story about a boy who thinks he can read in a secret code only to discover it’s in braille. The story also had the illustrations audio described for the first time. Lora and Tai then returned to the studio for World Braille Day in January where Lora read another bedtime story – firmly dispelling the misconception that blind or partially sighted parents can’t read to their children.‘TAI’ the IAT Guide Dog As we all know every year at Congress, the Branches organise a raffle to raise funds for a charity. BulletinDecember 2023 • 19 CASE STUDY – Treatment of traumatic conspecific bite in Poecilotheria regalis AbstractCaptive breeding is an important part of maintaining Theraphosid spiders in captivity. As obligate predators there is a high risk of cannibalism, before, during or after copulation. This case study documents the successful treatment of a traumatic bite wound to the dorsal prosomal of a male Indian ornamental spider (Poecilotheria regalis). The male was bitten by a larger female as a result of a failed mating attempt. The wound was sealed with commercial superglue and resulted in a successful recovery and return to normal behaviours. One month post treatment the male was ready for further mating attempts. IntroductionTrauma treatment in arthropods is always challenging as the exoskeleton has low flexibility in many regions. In theraphosid spiders (commonly called tarantulas) the dorsal prosoma is particularly rigid and thus traumatic injury has a high likelihood of leaving an open wound which could lead to life threatening haemolymph loss. The prosoma also contains the neuronal ganglia, eyes and pumping stomach which could also lead to life threatening injuries. Arthropod haemolymph clots through proteolytic cascades that lead to conversion of coagulogen into insoluble coagulin. However, this process is inefficient at closing large wounds. In veterinary clinics sterile tissue glue is used for wound closure in invertebrates (Pellet, 2015). These glues are based on cyanoacrylate with butyl or octyl groups which are weaker but less toxic than standard superglue with methyl or ethyl groups (Ayyıldız, 2017). Outside of the veterinary surgery these tissue glues are rarely available and thus standard superglue appears to be well tolerated, although full studies have not been performed.Theraphosid spiders are obligate predators and thus any interaction between two spiders has a high chance of fatal injury, even breeding. Successful breeding attempts involve well fed females and a period of protected acclimatisation such that both spiders are aware of the other but unable to make contact. Following this protocol, the author has successfully bred several species including Poecilotheria regalis. Even after careful observations of behaviour any incompatibility is usually met with a feeding response from the female.

Bulletin20 • December 2023 Case StudyThe patient was a 13cm legspan male Indian Ornamental spider (Poecilotheria regalis) presenting with two large puncture wounds in the dorsal prosoma, proximal to the eye turret. History – male and large juvenile female P. regalis were acquired for breeding project in February 2017. They were housed in 20cm x 20cm x 30cm (width x length x height) glass terraria with wire mesh top (Exo Terra), hide internal décor, water bowl as per (Bennie, 2011) and moist coir used as substrate. Vertical heatmat (Habistat) with thermostat was used to maintain 25˚C ambient temperature in both enclosures. During the previous 12 months the female had completed ecdysis twice and was deemed to be adult at 15cm leg span, i.e. larger than the adult male. On the evening of the 23rd January 2018 the glass fronts of the two enclosures were opened and the enclosures placed together for mating (fi gure 1). After about 30 minutes the male started drumming his palpal balbs on the sides of the enclosure and the female responded by drumming a quieter reply, as expected (fi gure 2). After two hours and several mating attempts the male still hadn’t been successful. The female then struck from beside the male her fangs pierced the dorsal prosoma of the male with an audible crunch. The female was quickly removed from the male with rubber tipped forceps and both spiders were restrained in plastic spider catchers (top 20 cm from two litre soda bottles). The male was inspected and haemolymph was seen leaking from the prosoma injury and single drops were Figure 1. Enclosure placed together for breeding.Figure 1Enclosure placed together for breeding.

BulletinDecember 2023 • 21also noticed on the second joints of the pedipalps but these were not increasing in size. The patient was still maintaining a normal posture however was slow to move. Cyanoacrylate glue (Bostick) was applied directly to the haemolymph leak which sealed the wound and stopped the haemolymph leakage. Less than 10 minutes elapsed between bite and photo of closed wound (fi gure 3). Both spiders were returned to their home enclosures for monitoring. Initially the patient was hunched up in the corner of the enclosure but after two hours had climbed up the side of the enclosure and was seen resting in a normal posture. After fi ve days the patient was offered food (medium locust) but did not feed, this is usual for older males but was feeding bi-monthly previous to injury. Approximately one month post injury the male was once again given the opportunity to mate. The enclosures were put together at 12:55 on 26th Feb 2018, the male immediately started drumming as before and the female replied with softer beats, she followed him around the enclosure as expected. The female presented her ventral side and the male approached but clearly made some undetectable error and was attacked a second time, this was terminal and the patient was eaten. Thus, the body was not available for post-mortem analysis.Figure 2. Male approaching the female as part of the mating behaviour.Male approaching the female as part of the mating behaviour.

BulletinDecember 2023 • 23 DiscussionUnlike snakes, there are no studies on whether spiders are immune to the effects of their own species venom. It is expected that, as female spiders that have attacked males usually proceed to eat their conspecifics, they envenom their prey. Prior to this case it is unclear whether a male has survived a feeding bite from a female before. In humans P. regalis venom causes spastic muscle contractions and intense pain (Ahmed, 2009), thus if the males were susceptible to the female’s venom similar neuromuscular signs would be apparent, assuming envenomation had occurred.Formaldehyde toxicity in arthropods also causes neurotoxic signs with a median lethal dose of 1.54mg/g (Elmore, 1936), it is not expected that commercial superglue used in wound closure would reach this concentration. No toxicity was observed in the patient, either from envenomation or glue toxicity. It is impossible, without post-mortem, to determine if the patient’s anorexia was due to traumatic injury to the pumping stomach, stress or just old age. ConclusionCyanoacrylate glue is sufficient to close major prosoma trauma in Theraphosidae spiders. In emergencies, small amounts of commercial superglue are useful alternatives to tissue glue.References• Ahmed, N., Pinkham, M. & Warrell, D. Learn more about rat playpens with a new online resource Conventional cages limit the ability of rats to explore, exercise and engage in species-specific behaviours, such as climbing, burrowing, and upright stretching. These constraints on rat behaviour can negatively impact on their physical and psychological health, leading to unhealthy animals and potentially unreliable data. Rat playpens provide an opportunity to address the welfare issues associated with standard caging, and can also create positive change for animal technicians, researchers, and facilities. To find out more about the benefits of providing rats with playpen access visit the NC3Rs online rat playpen resource, which also includes: ▪ Answers to your common rat playpen questions. ▪ Practical tips for setting up a rat playpen in your facility. ▪ Video content, including a rat playpen webinar. www.nc3rs.org.uk/rat-playpens With thanks to University College London, University of Leicester, and University of Bristol for images. Mental Health AwarenessLet’s Talk about ... World Mental Health Daywww.iat.org.ukInstitute ofAnimal TechnologyCOUNCILEDI GroupEquity, Diversity and InclusionIt’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …Let’s Talk about ... World Mental Health Day - ‘Is mental health a universal human right?’World Mental Health Day is about raising awareness ofmental health and driving positive change for everyone’smental health.Managing Mental Health at work is important for employers and employees. In a recent survey conducted by the CIPD (2023) most organisations are increasing their focus on health and wellbeing as sickness absence continues to increase and has reached the highest level in a decade at 7.8 days on average per employee per year. The increasing cost of living and changes to working practices mean that it is now more important than ever to put workplace mental health at the top of workplace agendas. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a step change in organisations’ focus on employee health and wellbeing with many organisations within the animal research industry now developing their own stand alone wellbeing strategy.Mental health problems can happen suddenly because of a specific event in someone’s life, or it can build up gradually over time.Spotting possible signs of a mental health problem:Not everyone will show obvious signs of poor mental health and it is important not to make assumptions - but some possible signs at work include:l appearing tired, anxious or withdrawnl increase in sickness absence or being late to workl changes in the standard of their work or focus on tasksl being less interested in tasks they previously enjoyedl changes in usual behaviour, mood or how the person behaves with the people they work withIt can be harder to spot these signs if employees are working from home.
