DECEMBER 2022 NewsletterStaying Safe in Icy ConditionsNow that the cold is here to stay, we’ll all have to be a bit more careful when walking around outside. These tips from Iowa State University can help for all snowy states!1. Plan ahead, give yourself sucient time and plan your route. Trac moves slowly in snowy conditions, so give yourself extra time — don’t assume a clear path for driving and walking will be available.2. Wear shoes or boots that provide traction on snow and ice. Footwear made of rubber and neoprene composite provide better traction than plastic and leather soles. Wear at-soled shoes, and avoid shoes with heels. Products are available with abrasive soles or cleats that provide special traction for walking on snow and ice, such as Yaktrax.3. Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles, climbing or descending stairs, entering or leaving buildings. Move slowly, and remove snow/water from shoes when entering buildings. Use handrails or cars for support. Try to keep your center of gravity over your support leg. Keep your hands out of your pockets.4. Walk on designated walkways as much as possible. Don’t take shortcuts over snow piles or areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible. Look ahead when you walk. A sidewalk completely covered with ice may require travel along its grassy edge for traction. Don’t text or read while walking.5. Walk safely on snow or ice. Take short steps or shue for stability. Bend slightly forward and walk at-footed with your center of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible. Keep your hands out of your pockets. Be prepared to fall. If you fall, fall with sequential contacts at your thigh, hip and shoulder. Avoid using outstretched arms to brace yourself. Bend your back and head forward to avoid hitting your head against the ground.
Fun at Comerica ParkOn September 29th, we went to a Detroit Tigers game. First, we had lunch at the Tiger Plaza and then went down to our great seats in the Lower Level. The Tigers won that day against the Kansas City Royals 10- 3.
Never Quit QuittingFor most people who use tobacco, tobacco cravings or smoking urges can be strong. But you can stand up against these cravings. Here are steps to help you resist the urge to smoke or completely quit.1. Get ready! Choose a specic quit date, and have a clear “why” – think about all the ways quitting will improve your life and health.2. Get support and encouragement. Research shows your odds are better if you get support from others. Rely on friends and family to help motivate you and keep tobacco out of sight.3. Learn new skills and behaviors. Plan ways to distract yourself from urges, and have something else to do with your hands to keep you busy. Prepare for managing withdrawal symptoms.4. Get medication and use it correctly. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) medications provide small, steady doses of nicotine to help stop cravings and relieve symptoms people might experience while trying to quit smoking. Some NRTs are available without a prescription, including gums, inhalers, nasal sprays, lozenges, and patches. Other medications must be prescribed by a doctor.5. Be prepared for relapse or dicult situations. If you do relapse, nd ways to cope with it, and remind yourself of all the reasons you wanted to quit in the rst place.Chasing Perfection“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” – Vince LombardiHave you ever stopped and thought about this quote? There’s so much depth to it.No one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. But instead of looking at mistakes as failures, successful people see them as learning opportunities. As famous author and business consultant Stephen Covey said, “The proactive approach to a mistake is to acknowledge it instantly, correct and learn from it.” And as General Colin Powell professed, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”But just because we know that perfection is impossible doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t “chase” it, as Lombardi suggests. After all, chasing something gets you moving. To chase something is to take action, to move with intention. That action is almost more important than whether or not you actually reach the goal!As Whitney Wolfe, co-founder of Tinder (of all things) said, “Have a dream, chase it down, jump over every single hurdle, and run through re and ice to get there.” What’s stopping you from dreaming big? After all, someone has to be the best. It might as well be you – so why not chase that goal, even knowing that you might not get to it?Because as Lombardi says, chasing will land us on excellence. We may mess up from time to time, but those may be learning experiences. And those learning experiences will make us even better. As the all-star coach Pat Riley said, “Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.”
