sponsored by SMART MONEY How to Buy the Right Gift It s the holidays and you want to buy some presents for your friends and family The hard part is buying the right gift for everyone Even adults struggle with picking out and paying for the perfect gift Don t worry though you can do it with some help How Much Money Do You Have The first step when buying gifts is to figure out how much money you have Open your piggy bank or check your youth savings account and see how much money you have Determine an amount you would like to spend on gifts and this will be your budget for the gift giving season Make sure not to spend all of your saving Your budget will determine how many gifts and what kind of gifts you can buy Your parents might also be willing to help you with purchasing your gifts Be sure to ask politely and be decisive about what gifts you need help with Even if you only have a small amount of money you can still give meaningful gifts to others The thought behind a good gift is more important than the gift itself Homemade gifts are often more meaningful and can help you stay within your gift budget This could include going to a store the mall or with a parent s help shopping online An important tip in finding and picking a good gift is to think about the person you are buying for Don t pick something you would like but buy something they would like Try to think of things they enjoy want or need and see if you can buy a gift that fits You can also ask for help or advice from others who know the person for which you are buying a gift Are you getting a gift for a sibling Ask your parents what they think your sibling might like Not Spending Too Much Money Gifts can get expensive and you should try to save money when you can When you find a good gift don t buy it right away With an adult s help shop around at different stores to try and find the lowest price Sometimes you can find the same exact gift on sale or cheaper at a different store or online Buying gifts can lead to special and memorable holidays and events While you might not remember the gifts you receive you likely will remember how you felt as you watched someone receive the gift you picked out for them Finding the Right Gift Knowing how much money you have to spend it s time to start looking for gifts Federally Insured by NCUA Membership required SUPER SAVERS xxx Sponsor Page Horizontal Build a healthy financial future for your child Federally Insured by NCUA December 2022 9

COMMUNITY ARTICLE Understanding ADHD Who do you know with polio It use to be that everybody knew somebody who had contracted polio I don t think that my children could even tell you what polio is However if you asked them if they know somebody with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD they could probably list off a few of their classmates with that diagnosis I read a news article from the Mayo Clinic It was helpful in laying out some basic questions that a parent could use to determine if they needed to look into getting some professional help for their child or if their child was just going through normal development Here are a few of those questions Is the child often easily distracted Is he constantly on the move Does she fail to think before acting to the point that it raises safety concerns And most crucial Do issues with inattention distractibility impulsivity and hyperactivity significantly impair daily life The article recommends that if a parent can answer yes to these questions then an evaluation with the child s primary care provider is in order My question would be what happens next The usual treatment I have seen recommended is medication Let s look at your child s default future flash forward 7 years from now Is your child still on medication Has anything been done to address the cause of the problem and not just treat the symptoms Are you or your child frustrated with taking medication or multiple medications So here is the good news Research shows that the human brain is ever learning and changing The brain feeds off of stimulation at any age H A V E Kool Minds 1 4 Page Vertical A V E R Y SHOCKING CHRISTMAS Toy Town 1 4 Page Vertical 25 OFF ANY ONE I TEM I N THE STORE EXCLUDES LEGO R C EXPIRES DECEMBER 31 2022 www koolminds com 10 www southernidahokids com 1236 BLUE LAKES BLVD N TWIN FALLS

s p on s or ed b y HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Teaching Children Gratitude and Kindness The holiday season can be such a special time for our children While celebrating our holiday traditions can be stressful and time consuming the holiday season can be a perfect time to reinforce habits of kindness and gratitude in our children children know how important it is A great deal of mean or unkind behavior is not done to another person directly but often behind their back or online Unfortunately among adults and children these words or actions will eventually negatively impact the person for whom they were intended Kindness Being kind to others not only helps them but is always good for our own mental health Acting kind toward others can increase self esteem and strengthen our relationships Gratitude Feeling grateful means that you show and feel appreciation for the good things in your life or the things that others do for you Feelings of gratitude decrease symptoms of depression and increase feelings of optimism GRATITUDE Modeling both behaviors is the most effective way we can teach them to our children KINDNESS Show kindness to others by service kind words and avoiding unnecessary criticism Be careful what you say about others at home it is amazing what children will pick up on Be especially careful how you talk about people of different races religions or ideologies than your own An attitude of constant kindness toward others even when they are not around will help your Talk frequently to your children about the things for which you are grateful Thank people often employees that serve you at a store or restaurant friends or family that assist you with babysitting or help in some other way and your children when they behave well finish their chores or help their siblings Ask your children daily what they are grateful for help them reflect not only on the things they have but what others do for them and their own talents skills and strengths As we practice and teach kindness and gratitude we will not only strengthen our own resilience and mental health but contribute to creating a healthier and happier society Sponsored by Andrew Monson DO St Luke s Pediatrics 14 www southernidahokids com

s p on s or ed b y s p on s or ed b y HEALTH WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT big world out there that is ready to be explored Healthy Diet and Exercise In both of these areas parents can set the example That example can be for good or not Parents that spend all day in front of the screen show children that this is an acceptable activity Parents that eat junk food and give these poor food choices to their kids are setting kids up for a myriad of problems in the future Obesity has many health related risk problems such as diabetes heart disease bone and joint problems poor sleep and complicates almost every other medical condition Childhood obesity has become a prevalent problem in America About 1 3 of all children in the United States are in the overweight or obese category Childhood obesity is a complex issue that has several associated factors Both environmental and biological factors can play a part Parents that are overweight themselves have a higher likelihood to have children that are more predisposed to being overweight Children are very impressionable It is up to parents to set a good example for the future generation We must eat a more balanced healthy diet and encourage our children to do the same We should be active with our children play games with them and spend quality time outside Something as simple as a walk around the block can be a great opportunity to visit with our kids and help them to stay more active I want to talk more about the personal choices the parent and kids make that can lead to them being overweight As soon as children can eat solid foods they begin to develop food habits The foods that parents choose to feed their children the amounts and times they eat are all learned behaviors that children will pick up on A legislation that may help with this problem would be the school district providing free meals at school and during the summer months This would require the state to allocate funds to pay for these programs The state may need to request federal funds to assist with this but no child in Idaho should go hungry or not have access to healthy food options As parents we should request and support legislation for increased access to healthy food for our children Another big contributor of childhood obesity is lack of physical activity In a world of technology at our fingertips too often children would rather sit in front of the television or computer instead of spending time outside Just as eating habits can develop at a young age so do screen watching habits There are many educational and entertaining programs available for kids but they should not be spending all day in front of a screen There is a great There are some great resources available to help parents choose healthy food options and to get more active https www myplate gov is a great free resource This government website and phone app provides information on eating a balanced diet which includes recipes nutritional information and has guides for meal planning and setting personal goals Every person s situation is different but parents need to make the choice to be a better example to their children by eating healthier and staying more active These choices will help children to make healthier choices themselves and live better lives Cody W Matthews MSN APRN FNP C OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK 208 736 7422 18 www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls www southernidahokids com
