EYES CLOSED 3:53 PM December 10, 2021 ו ‘פשת תבט‘ב שגיו תשרפ Sunday, December 12, 1B -Kabolas Chumash 10:00 am Friday, December 17 - Deadline for all orders for Torah Academy Virtual Auction Motzei Shabbos, December 18- Virtual Auction Prize Drawing Monday, December 27, 1G Chumash Mesibah 10:00 am Dear Parents, As Yaakov begins to descend to Mitzrayim, Hashem appears to him with the following reassurance: םג ךלעא יכנאו המירצמ ךמע דרא יכנאךיניע לע ודי תישי ףסויו הלע, “I will descend with you to Mitzrayim, and I will surely bring you up, and Yosef will place his hand over your eyes” The simple understanding of this possuk is that Hashem promises Yaakov that He will be with him in Mitzrayim, and Yosef will care for him. Yaakov was afraid of traveling to Mitzrayim – justifiably so! Mitzrayim was not an ideal location for a Yid. What benefit then, we may wonder, is there for Yaakov and his family to leave ןענכ ץרא for Mitzrayim? The המכח ךשמ points to the deeper meaning in the words ךיניע לע ודי תישי ףסויו. Hashem is informing Yaakov that it isn’t worthwhile to try and fathom how spending time in Mitzrayim will ultimately benefit the Jewish people. The reasoning is known only to Hashem and is beyond the comprehension of human beings – even someone as great as Yaakov. But to reassure Yaakov, Hashem refers to the episode of Yosef. Throughout the twenty-two years where Yosef was separated from Yaakov, it was impossible to perceive any positive outcome. Yet in hindsight, one was able to understand that all the experiences Yosef underwent resulted in his achieving prominence in Mitzrayim. So too here, Hashem is telling Yaakov to let your knowledge of Yosef’s story allow you to enter Mitzrayim with your ‘eyes closed’. There’s no need to contemplate or understand why. Just look at the story of Yosef to reinforce your belief that everything will be to the Jewish people’s benefit. We often face challenges. We sometimes wonder why Hashem is doing this to us, and how it can be of benefit. The Torah is teaching us that the why is beyond our comprehension. Everything is another piece in the puzzle of Hashem’s master plan for Klal Yisrael collectively, and ourselves individually. Our job is to accept the ׳ה ןוצר, forge forward and work to do what we can. Hashem will be with us along the way. ! תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs So many wonderful things happened in the past two weeks!
