December 1, 2023ד״פשת ולסכ ח’’י חלשיו תשרפ ALWAYS READY 3:55 PMDear Parents,When detailing the struggle between Yaakov and the angel, the possuk states: ודבל בקעי רתויו רחשה תולע דע ומע שיא קבאיו – and Yaakov was left alone, he was confronted by a man who wrestled with him until dawn.Rashi explains that this was no ordinary man, but was actually ושע’s ךאלמ. The Gemara in Chullin א״צ offers two opinions of the ‘man’s’ appearance. One opinion is that he looked like a םכח דימלת, while others’ maintain he looked like a non-jew. What is the deeper meaning behind this תקולחמ?The Chasam Sofer explains that in Yaakov’s initial message to Eisav he informed him that התע דע רחאו יתרג ןבל םע. I lived with Lavan until now. Chazal explain that Yaakov was intimating via the words יתרג ןבל םע that יתרמש תווצמ ג״ירת (יתרג can be scrambled to form ג״ירת). However, there were two mitzvos that Yaakov was deficient in. One was the mitzvah of םאו בא דוביכ, as Yaakov has been away from his parents’ home for over twenty years, and thus had not had the opportunity to fulfill this mitzvah. The second mitzvah he was lacking in was the prohibition against marrying two sisters. Eisav’s malach attempted to attack him in these two areas of weakness.According to the opinion that the angel appeared like a Torah scholar, the angel was hinting at Yaakov’s deficiency in honoring his parents. The gemarah in Megillah writes that Yaakov was not punished for the fourteen years he spent learning in the Yeshiva of Shem and Eiver. It was only the years spent in Lavan’s house that he was held accountable for.The other opinions maintain that the angel appeared as a non-jew to indicate that Yaakov acted as a non-jew by marrying two sisters, as this prohibition only applies to Jews. Then Yaakov heard that Eiav was heading towards him with four hundred men the possuk writes ול רציו דאמ בקעי ארייו – two different expressions of fear and distress. Explains the Chasam Sofer, the word ארייו refers to םירוה דוביכ as the possuk in Parshas Kedoshim states: וארית ומאו ויבא שיא, whereas the word רציו references his marriage to two sisters, as stated by the possuk ררצל חקת אל התוחא לא השאו.The Yetzer Hara is always ready to attack; sometimes In the guise of a םכח דימלת and other times in the guise of a non-Jew. We need to identify our challenges and areas of deficiency, and strengthen ourselves to overcome them.תבש טוג!
