2018 19 ANNUAL REPORT 3 LETTER FROM THE Executive Director Dear Friends Dancing Classrooms Philly DCP has grown steadily since its founding in 2007 It has been twelve years since the organization was founded and it has gone from serving 50 classrooms in 2007 to 134 classrooms in 2019 We are so fortunate that our founders Joyce Burd Jane Brooks and Harvey Kimmel remain invested in the health growth and success of DCP This past year founder Harvey Kimmel allowed us to launch The Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Dance for the Future Program DFTF In its first year we were able to offer DFTF in five School District of Philadelphia Acceleration Network schools John Barry Rudolph Blankenburg Jay Cooke Morton McMichael and EW Rhodes The Acceleration Network established by the School District in 2016 aims to significantly improve school academics and learning environments through adding resources such as frequent reviews of student progress technology to support students in personalized learning and positive behavior support systems such as Dancing Classrooms Philly programming Thanks to a generous three year pledge from The Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Family Foundation and matching challenge funds from The Philadelphia Foundation and numerous individual donors Dance for the Future aims to make real and lasting change in the lives of students in Philadelphia s most challenged schools through dance In its first year of the program seven Teaching Artists working in pairs taught ballroom dance to 243 students from these schools When asked to use one word to describe the students the Teaching Artists proudly shared passionate unpredictable cooperative and growth And more than three quarters of DFTF students said they had more positive relationships with classmates after their Dancing Classrooms Philly in school residency We look forward to reaching even more students over the next two years of the pledge and we thank The Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Family Foundation for making such an impactful investment and trusting us to rise to this challenge Every year we see more and more how Dancing Classrooms Philly helps to instill self confidence teamwork cooperative goal setting and joy in students Thanks to all of our donors volunteers teaching artists supporters and board members we were able to serve more than 3 600 students this past year A sincere thanks to all of you for helping in so many different ways Denise Kinney Executive Director
4 DANCING CLASSROOMS PHILLY SCHOOL Programming In school Residency The Dancing Classrooms Philly In School Residency a standards based social and emotional learning program takes place over ten weeks with 45 minute classes taking place twice weekly All fifth or eighth grade students are required to participate and professional Teaching Artists provide instruction in a variety of ballroom dances including foxtrot rumba swing tango waltz and merengue The residency cultivates essential life skills and fosters a sense of accomplishment that DCP believes every child should experience The residency also includes a video lesson a guest artist buddy visit curriculum connection assignments and concludes with a public culminating event where all students demonstrate the dances they learned Work with Special Needs Schools DCP curriculum connection art BY THE NUMBERS In the 2018 19 academic year DCP served more than 3 600 students in 65 schools and 134 classrooms Dancing Classrooms Philly returned to Royer Greaves School for Blind in Spring 2019 following a highly successful residency at the school the previous year Originally the school administration was not sure if the dancing would work with students in wheelchairs but it was such a success that when asked if they would like the program to return in 2019 the response was Yes Yes Yes We would love to have DCP return to us So many people have been asking if we are doing that again Culminating and Colors of the Rainbow Team Match Events At the close of each semester all students exhibit what they learn at a Culminating Event In these public forums students also share their personal stories and artwork from the curriculum connection assignments they complete throughout the program Schools participating in the In School Residency Program can also participate in an optional ballroom dance competition the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match The Team Match events are joyful occasions that bring together DCP school communities from around the region The events help children from different backgrounds realize that they are all part of a larger family united in their love of ballroom dance Relationships are built and strengthened and adults and children cheer each other on with elegance and good sportsmanship Teachers and administrators help to determine who will represent their school in the Semi Final Team Match Dancers from Chester Upland School of the Arts proudly display their Team Match ribbons BY THE NUMBERS In 2018 19 DCP held 65 Culminating Events 28 in the Fall and 37 in the Spring In addition to a Middle School Team Match DCP held seven Semi Final and two Semester Final events for 5th grade participants in 2018 19 Chester Upland School of the Arts was the winner of the 2019 Colors of the Rainbow Team Match Grand Final for the fourth year in a row
2018 19 ANNUAL REPORT 5 OPPORTUNITIES Beyond the Classroom The DCP Academy and DCP Allstars open to in school residency graduates provide an outlet for our students to become more engaged in dance and to share their love of dance with others DCP Academy The DCP Academy is a weekly program during the school year open to all in school residency graduates Classes are held on Saturday mornings at three convenient and accessible locations University City Arts League in West Philly St Christopher School in the North East and CHI Movement Arts Center in South Philly Academy students receive more advanced training from the fifth grade syllabus through a curriculum designed to challenge them with steps and techniques to move to the next level while nurturing confidence motivation discipline and performance quality Students also receive introduction to new dances from different cultures exposure to the civility social manners and elegance expected in adult life and have the opportunity to meet peers from other schools and develop lifelong friendships DCP held its inaugural Academy Festival bringing together students from all three Academy sites to perform and celebrate their year of ballroom dancing in front of a large audience The Festival was also highlighted on 6abc Action News in Philadelphia The DCP Allstars were featured on LaSalle TV s Future Leaders in Philadelphia BY THE NUMBERS In the 2018 19 school year 74 students from grades 5 12 participated in the DCP Academy DCP Allstars The DCP Allstars comprised of 7th 12th graders inspire audiences throughout Philadelphia at public and private events Every dancer in the DCP Allstars was introduced to ballroom dancing through a Dancing Classrooms Philly In School Residency Participation in the Allstars is by audition for residency graduates and Academy participants who want to further engage their passion for dance perform to live music and expand their artistry musicality and comfort on stage In the 2018 19 school year eleven Allstars performed with a variety of musical partners throughout the year including with the University of Pennsylvania Honor Band the Musicopia String Orchestra octet at Rock the Ballroom and the Main Line Singers dancing to the choir s live vocals The Academy has changed my perception of music and its association with dance The Academy will always have a special place in my heart because I met my best friend there DCP Academy student
