Despite the disruption caused by 2022’s economic uncertainty, the war in Ukraine and the 2022 Christmas postal strikes, the UK greeting card industry has shown exceptional resilience, falling in value by just -2% in value since 2021. The total retail value of single card sales in the UK in 2022 stood at £1.46 billion, equating to 828 million single cards sold.UK CARD MARKET The UK Greeting Card Market is worth £1.46 billion at retailEveryday card* sales account for 77% of total retail value of all single card sales, with an Average Retail Price (ARP) of £1.77 (down marginally from a revised** £1.78 in 2021). STILL SHOPPING CAUTIOUSLYThe cost of living crisis has meant that in 2023, value was a top priority for gift buyers, which impacted Mother’s Day shopping behaviours. Many consumers adopted savvy tactics and waited to purchase until products were on promotion. These concerns were also evident when celebrating the event, many consumers choose to celebrate and cook at home instead of the traditional out-of-home spending at restaurants or takeaways (Mintel, 2023)MOTHER'S DAY TRENDS2. SUPPORTING BURNT-OUT MUMSGiven the disproportionate hardships mothers have faced over the last two years, some brands are no longer waiting for one day to celebrate mum. According to a Parenthood PhD survey, 91% of mothers reported feeling more tired or having less energy than pre-Covid-19. On the brink of burnout and with a motherhood recession on the horizon, supporting mothers at home by readdressing the balance, offering actionable solutions and designing with their unmet needs has never been more important. 4. SPEND MORE TIME TOGETHEROne trend that’s gaining popularity, is the gift of time. With many mothers admitting that what they really want is to spend some quality time with their kids, or to in fact, have more time to themselves. Spa trips also performed well as a Mother's Day gift, allowing time to spend together and to relax.5. STRONGER INTEREST IN PERSONALISED GIFTSPersonalisation is a common theme across multiple seasonal events when it comes to gifting as it helps customers make gifts even more memorable. It is also a way for brands and retailers to renew interest in popular Mother’s Day gifts as well as providing a chance for familiar products to be elevated and introduced into the mix. Most importantly, it can be a crucial way for retailers to add value to gifting ranges and provide customers with affordable ways to buy into the even.
