The total retail value of single card sales in the UK in 2022 stood at £1.46 billion, equating to 828 million single cards sold.UK CARD MARKET The UK Greeting Card Market is worth £1.46 billion at retailEveryday card* sales account for 77% of total retail value of all single card sales, with an Average Retail Price (ARP) of £1.77 (down marginally from a revised** £1.78 in 2021). COST OF LIVING CRISISIn 2023, Valentine’s Day struggled to gain traction amid a cost-of-living crisis, spending was estimated to have fallen 19% year-on-year (Mintel, 2023)Average consumer spending also dropped. Among those who did buy, 50% said they bought fewer Valentine’s Day gifts this year because of financial concerns.However, the easing of inflation in the second half of 2023 should present greater opportunities for 2024.VALENTINE'S DAY TRENDS2. SELF LOVE IS A KEY MESSAGEDifferent from tradition, Valentine’s Day also celebrates self-love. Today, many people want to meet their needs and care for themselves. They also suggest that self-love may help ease anxiety, avoid stress, and strengthen self-esteem. MORE GIFTS THAT LAST LONGERValentine’s Day retailers also have to contend with a growing fatigue among consumers about the throwaway nature of many usual Valentine’s Day gifts. So there is an opportunity where consumers are looking for gifts that last longer, with 63% willing to spend more on these when shopping for Valentine’s Day gifts (Mintel, 2023).Mintel’s market analysis expects there to be a willingness to brighten moods after a difficult few years and many will use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to do this. Gifts that can bring emotional and mental benefits are likely to be popular.5. ONLINE STILL POPULAR SHOPPING CHANNELIn the UK, online spending for Valentine's Day-related items was down by two percent in 2023 compared to 2022. While the number of items and the number of purchases increased, e-commerce sales dropped both overall and in average value per order.However, having said this, the sustained level of online demand we’ve seen around Valentine’s Day is testament to the central role digital plays in consumers’ buying journeys. 3. PURCHASES FOR PETS AND CHILDRENValentine’s Day isn’t just about your significant other — it’s also a fun holiday to show your kids (or grandchildren, nieces, and nephews) how much you love them. More consumers are purchasing Valentine's Day cards and gifts for their children and pets than ever before, with retailers widening the pool of recipients and subsequently encouraging consumers to spend more on Valentine's Day.
