The total retail value of single card sales in the UK in 2022 stood at £1.46 billion, equating to 828 million single cards sold. Despite the disruption caused by 2022’s economic uncertainty, the war in Ukraine and the 2022 Christmas postal strikes, the UK greeting card industry has shown exceptional resilience, falling in value by just -2% in value since 2021. In 2022 more than 1 in 10 cards continued to be sold online.UK CARD MARKET The UK Greeting Card Market is worth £1.46 billion at retailEveryday card* sales account for 77% of total retail value of all single card sales, with an Average Retail Price (ARP) of £1.77 (down marginally from a revised** £1.78 in 2021). COST OF LIVING CRISISAs consumers plan for upcoming Holidays, they’re worried about the prohibitive cost of living . According to the office for national statistics, around 6 in 10 adults are spending less on non-essentials due to cost of living increases in 2023. Customers place more emphasis than ever on value for money with most seeking money-saving strategies. Therefore it is essential for retailers to boost a narrative of affordable indulgence.CHRISTMAS TRENDS2. HANDMADE AND ONE-OF-A-KIND GIFTSAfter the DIY boom of the pandemic, consumers are still leaning towards handmade gifts - extra points if they are local. Much of this success can be attributed to the consumer desire for handmade and one-of-a-kind goods. Since last September, Google searches for handmade gifts, including “Diwali handmade gifts” (+300%) and “handmade gifts for teachers from students” (+140%) have increased, and the cost of living crisis will only push consumers to want to spend money on meaningful things and keepsake products.CHRISTMAS TRENDSOver the last few years, we have seen some key trends come through for the festive season and where possible, we have incorpoated this feedback into our 2024 selection.From an external point of view, please see below an outline of some of the more apparent Christmas trends that we have seen in the UK over the past year, and what may continue into 2024 and 2025

CONSUMERS WANT PRACTICAL & SUSTAINABLE GIFTSConsumers will be seeking practical products and gifts this Holiday season, as a recession looms and inflation increases. Consumers don’t want to buy gifts that will just end up in a landfill – they want to purchase gifts that will actually be used and cherished. Google searches for “sustainable gifts” are up YoY, including “sustainable corporate gifts” which saw a 250% increase.5. ALL ABOUT ANTICIPATIONFor parents looking to beef up simple Holiday gifts, experiential packaging and gamification can add value to basics. #Unboxing had 47bn views on TikTok and 1.6m videos on YouTube last year. The concept has helped luxury fashion and beauty brands reach younger audiences but it can also be used to add panache to more affordable products, including stocking stuffers, food and candy, toys and other necessities. In the metaverse, brands can also experiment with treasure hunts that unlock gifts as a means to build anticipation and excitement.3. STARTING SHOPPING EARLIERAccording to a report by WGSN, consumer appetite for Christmas shopping and content is starting earlier, especially when it comes to sales and discounts. Salesforce reports worldwide that 42% more shoppers plan to start buying gifts earlier this season, citing inflation as “the main motivating factor driving early purchases.”
