K N O X V I L L E B R A N C H www asceknoxville org PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello Members Thank you for entrusting me to lead our Knoxville Branch for the 2016 2017 year It is an exciting time to be a civil engineer because of the many civil engineering projects currently underway There is a lot of focus on our country state and local declining infrastructure Many of these problematic situations are drawing a lot of national attention to our profession For instance consider a California dam s spillway failing threatening hundreds of thousands of residents the local headlines of major threats being found in Tennessee s dams and the Flint Michigan s water system those are all recent issues that are highlighting the infrastructure problems in this country Nothing demonstrates it better than the recently released report card on Tennessee s and the United States infrastructure The report can be found at www infrastructurereportcard org The report card can be compared to a personal annual physical We go to the doctor for a series of tests and examinations to receive results of our current well being While most of us aren t in perfect health we look at the diagnosis and say What do I need to do better The main reason for this yearly physical is to find areas of concern before they become serious problems which may require significant effort to fix We would much more rather watch our diet take blood pressure medicine or whatever is prescribed now as to end up in the emergency room with cords and tubes attached to us later This past fall we received our physical on the state s infrastructure While an immediate hospital trip may not be needed corrective measures do need to be taken to head problems off now instead of waiting on that huge hospital bill to come later due to some major collapse You know what the old timers use to say A stitch in time saves nine So we need to urge our federal state and local governments to save nine stitches by acting now instead of later Of course this is not as easy as just asking they have hundreds of people seeking money and practically everyone is not wanting taxes to be raised But as engineers it is our duty to protect the welfare of the public so I am asking you to speak to your legislators Ask them to strongly consider the necessity of our infrastructure and the importance it plays in our lives Let s correct this now before we end up lying flat on a table with people leaning over us charging a bunch of money and asking how do we feel Please accept this task as we enter this challenging and exciting time in Civil Engineering The other branch officers and members are also here to work with you to help you further the mission of safe public infrastructure and competent engineering Sincerely David Matlock TENNESSEE SECTION Knoxville Branch FIRST QUARTER 2017
