Academic AffairsProgrammatic UpdatesProgram NotesAmira • All grade levels, all schools exceeded National Growth Rate for WCPM by 2-4+%• Greater fidelity of implementation regarding usage for SY 22-23• Major training focus has been using the Science of Reading Instructional Data and Resources to guide instruction and differentiation• Computer connectivity and lack of headphones (with microphones) continue to be the biggest barriers• Many schools would like access for their 4thand 5thgrade students who are not reading on grade level. Illuminate • Draft survey has been reviewed by Associate Superintendents and Senior Officers for feedback• Feedback has been applied to the draft survey• Draft survey has been sent to AARS for feedback and Qualtrics development• Goal to deploy week of January 30, 2023Eureka Math • Individual schools continue to request training for how to implement a Eureka Math lesson• Efforts have been made over past years to build the capacity of Academic Coaches to maintain this training but that has not been successful – Dr. Tuck ends up doing that training• Eureka 1.0 is used in SCCPSS. It has been free except for printing costs. It will not be aligned to the new math standards or scope and sequence• This will be problematic for Eureka schools and new teachers who are used to a day-by-day workbook of problems for classwork and homework• The district math team will be auditing using the state’s Quality Assurance Rubric, along with iReady mathELA Textbook Adoption• RFP Draft sent to Ms. Ball-Oliver on 1/5 –awaiting feedback• RFP will then go to purchasing for finalization and posting for 30-days• The Advisory Council has provided feedback on the Educator Evaluation Rubrics and their feedback has been applied • The Adoption Coordinators have met twice with members of the Instructional Resource team from the Advisory Council to develop a draft for the Pilot Process to be shared with Academic Affairs for feedback

Academic AffairsSCCPSS’s World Languages program includes teachers from 17 commonwealths/countries(France, Canada, Haiti, Mexico, Spain, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, China, Taiwan, Guatemala, Ukraine, Uruguay).Attrition is still an issue with 15% turnover annually. Most WL teachers are lateral-entry teachers who work on a permit and/or complete an alternative certification program. Most Elementary Schools do not offer a World Language ProgramDual Language Immersion is available at two schools (Windsor Forest ES and Gould ES – Haven ended due to closing of Confucius Institute)Languages offered:• Spanish (Dual Language Immersion, ES, MS, HS, Virtual)• French (ES, HS, Virtual)• Latin (MS, HS)• Chinese/Mandarin (ES, HS)• German (HS)• Italian (HS)Teacher Leadership – World Language

Page 136

Academic AffairsElementary and K8 School Instructional Models:• We are using the FLEX (Foreign Language Experience – one class per week for students (approximately 50 minutes per week)• Ideally, we would use a FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) model with at least 135 minutes per week• All K-8 schools and 5 elementary schools offer a language option (one teacher per school unless otherwise noted)Dual Language Immersion:• In our 50/50 model, students spend half of their day learning math and science in Spanish and the other half learning ELA and social studies in English. We need to find time for SLA (Spanish Language Arts). Two teachers work as a team and share two groups of students. The students switch teachers after lunch.Future Program Recommendations:• Offer languages at all schools. Offer more than one language option at K-8, MS, HS levels• Expand Dual Language Immersion at schools with significant Hispanic populations (Garden City, Hesse, Rice Creek).Teacher Leadership – World Language

Page 137

Academic AffairsWL Summer ProgramsWe have a summer World Language program in cooperation with Junior University and Pre-AP Camps. In 2022, 94 students participated in the program. We hope to repeat the program in 2023.For 2023, students will have the option to participate in an additional language camps at Woodville-Tompkins HS as part of the World Language Proficiency Conference. This is a one-week, 90-minutes per day camp and will cost $25.Teacher Leadership – World Language

Academic AffairsThe Foreign Language Department at Georgia Southern University wants to pilot a program for their students to teach language modules to elementary students in SCCPSS. They would do this as part of their existing coursework.Suggested pilot schools are Smith and Pulaski.New Cooperative with Georgia Southern UniversityTeacher Leadership – World Language

Academic Affairs• Following GaDoE guidelines, we offer credit in lieu of enrollment for students who have attended school in another language or who hear/speak/read/write a language at the ACTFL Intermediate High level• We created Spanish I/II and French I/II assessments using ItsLearning. I proctor assessments at schools in August and January. For other languages, we assess students using the Avant STAMP assessments (I act as a proctor)• There is an upward trend for the assessments - especially at schools with a large Spanish-speaking population. After successfully testing, students can take higher level courses or simply meet their language requirementsCredit in Lieu of EnrollmentTeacher Leadership – World Language

Page 140

Academic Affairs2021-21 138 passed assessments (level I – 98 and level II – 40)2021-22 176 passed assessments (level I – 101, level II – 75)2022-23 258 passed assessments (level I – 90, level II – 168)Trends – We see an increasing number of students taking the assessments. Some students take both assessments, but in different testing windows. Nearly all of the assessments are in Spanish and French. There are small numbers of students taking a different assessment in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and Vietnamese (using assessments that we purchase for $39).Credit in Lieu of EnrollmentTeacher Leadership – World Language

Page 141

Academic AffairsGuidance DocumentStudents can earn credit for the equivalent of Levels I and II only.Native speakers of who have not already achieved a high degree of literacy in their native language may benefit greatly from taking either upper-level foreign language courses in their native language, when available, or courses designed for native speakers. When the "for native speakers" course is not an option, we can enroll students in upper-level language courses with non-native speakers.Credit in Lieu of EnrollmentTeacher Leadership – World Language
