FOREWORD BY HIGH COMMISSIONER MR ANDREAS S KAKOURIS Last year was undoubtedly a year like no other The COVID 19 pandemic brought unimaginable challenges and changes to our daily lives and has forced sacrifices and disruption to the livelihoods of so many Sadder has been the tragic loss of so many thousands of lives My condolences go to all who have lost loved ones and to wish a speedy recovery to those hospitalized from COVID I wish to take this opportunity to express thanks and deep appreciation to all those on the front line who day in day out perform an incredible service putting our well being above their own We will forever be indebted to them The High Commission would have wished to remember 2020 for another reason as it marked the 60th anniversary of the independence and establishment of the Republic of Cyprus Originally we had planned to present a series of live events and share with you in person the joy of celebrating our 60th Alas the pandemic forced us to recalibrate The unprecedented circumstances inspired us to seek alternative ways to celebrate this major milestone in the contemporary history of the island of Cyprus through online cultural activities culminating in the Cyprus 60 Online Festival Throughout this challenging period the High Commission s Cultural Section produced a cultural mosaic involving leading cultural and academic organisations and individual artists and scholars in Cyprus and the UK Individually and collectively they have honoured us with exceptional content to celebrate the unbridled richness and diversity of Cyprus s cultural landscape It is therefore with great pleasure that I present this publication which highlights the diverse and significant cultural activities that have taken place This has been possible through synergies and collaboration with important local national and international organizations and institutions such as the British Museum The Fitzwilliam Museum The Ashmolean Museum King s College London The Commonwealth Foundation Cyprus Theatre Organization Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation the Cyprus Centre at the University of Westminster the Visual Artists Association of Cyprus and EUNIC London Though nothing can or ever will replace the buzz atmosphere and camaraderie that comes with physical events the Covid 19 pandemic has made it incumbent on us to invent alternative ways to showcase the rich history and civilisation of Cyprus as well as dynamic cultural cooperation at a bilateral and international level Finally I look forward with hope and enthusiasm to an early opportunity where we can again meet in person when circumstances permit Andreas S Kakouris High Commissioner 4 CULTURAL REVIEW 2020 INTRODUCTION BY CULTURAL COUNSELLOR DR MARIOS PSARAS It is hard to write about a year that changed everything The health crisis the lives lost the suffering and the all encompassing containment policies forced upon populations across the globe cannot compare to anything that our generation has so far experienced The cultural sector has equally suffered a major blow theatres and cinemas closed concerts shows and festivals cancelled artists left without jobs without income or the means to support themselves their families let alone their creative work And yet looking back 2020 has been a year of significant cultural production and consumption A resilient cultural sector soon deployed innovation and technology to continue creating and disseminating arts and culture An alternative virtual public space was being streamlined for contemporary modes of art production and exhibition to which we responded by inviting artists curators academics and other cultural actors to join forces in putting together ambitious online cultural activities In the Cultural Review that follows you may witness a great range of online exhibitions festivals platforms performances and conferences that we either produced ourselves or co organised in partnership with leading cultural and academic organisations in Cyprus and the UK showcasing the richness of Cypriot culture both historical and contemporary as well as the relentless creativity of our artists I would like to thank for their unflagging support HE the High Commissioner of Cyprus Mr Andreas Kakouris the Director of the Cultural Services of Cyprus Mr Pavlos Paraskevas my precious colleagues in London and Cyprus our enthusiastic partners at the cultural and academic institutions we collaborate with and most of all our artists academics and curators through which Cypriot culture remains present thrives and evolves Finally I must thank the friends followers and supporters of Cypriot culture who attended our online events by the thousands thus helping us bring Cypriot culture to previously unimaginable numbers geographies ages The new spaces for cultural activity cooperation and consumption that have been created because of the pandemic are perhaps the silver lining of an otherwise devastating situation Yet I cannot emphasise enough our anticipation to resume our physical events Culture is all about sharing experiencing and feeling in the presence of others and with big uncovered smiles shining a light on all the little intangible things that make us humans Until we meet again then Dr Marios Psaras Cultural Counsellor CULTURAL REVIEW 2020 5

A GLIMPSE INTO 2021 Adapting to the new pandemic induced normal has translated into a major transformation of our operational strategies including the planning and production of cultural activity the promotion of Cypriot culture and work by Cypriot artists and of course our communication and marketing strategies Moving online meant investing in capacity building focusing on redeveloping our website and transforming it into a diverse cultural portal as well as employing new online tools applications and social media that would facilitate our organizational production and communication needs As a result we have multiplied our subscribers followers and supporters and have extended our audience beyond expectation At the same time we have invested in major infrastructure regeneration including the installation of high end gallery lighting in our Conference Halls thus creating a fresh contemporary space for hosting exhibitions performances and receptions Despite the continuing uncertainty we are hopeful that we will soon be able to resume our fascinating programme of physical cultural events in collaboration with both new and old partner organisations featuring cutting edge Cypriot artists but also the unfathomable history of our island That said our online cultural activity is here to stay with cultural offerings brought to you monthly via our newsletter as well as with many performances screenings panel discussions and other virtual events being lined up for 2021 catering to the needs of our new growing and expanded audiences around the world Arguably this might be the dawn of a new era for cultural diplomacy and cooperation which foregrounds hybrid cultural activities and enhanced collaborations 56 CULTURAL REVIEW 2020 CULTURAL REVIEW 2020 57
