The past year has been one of reflection and observation for CTS. As we prepared to celebrate the seminary's centennial anniversary, we also completed the first three years of our strategic plan. On the cusp of this milestone we contemplated, what story would we write for the next 100 years? The goals for the first phase of CTS 2030: Project Transformation were focused on continuing the renewal of the seminary and considerable progress has been made, putting CTS in a strong position to face the future. But over the past year, it became clear to me that the time has come for CTS to make a clearer, bolder claim about how it intends to invest its renewed place of strength. What is the whole point of having a healthy, vibrant seminary? To what end? To put it another way, what promises is CTS willing to make?To answer that question, I returned to our strategic plan, CTS 2030: Project Transformation. An element of the plan which has received little attention until now is what we call our Essence Statement, which states: “CTS is a catalyst for bringing God’s love, justice, and liberation to the world.” This is the ultimate contribution we want to have through all our relationships, degrees, and programs. This commitment, this promise to bring God’s love, justice, and liberation to the world is rooted in our belief that every single person is made in the image of God and thereby has divine worth and dignity.Over the year I gathered groups of faculty and sta to explore what it would look like if CTS focused on making this Essence Statement a reality over the next three years. The result? Five concrete, detailed statements that flow directly from that Essence Statement. The statements are grouped under three specific areas that are at the center of the seminary’s identity: clergy, Christian community, and mental health.FRIENDS OF GOD

3 support of our benefactors who choose to join us in this work through their philanthropic investments. Now it is time to align our eorts and resources with our commitment to be a catalyst for bringing God’s love, justice, and liberation to the world. To make it plain, the seminary can only get so strong by caring for itself. It will only become a vibrant and eective institution if it can mobilize us to care together about our communities of faith, their leadership, and making mental health more accessible in our state. This is what God has invited us to consider.Thank you for participating in this life-changing work!In the Spirit, David M. Mellott, PhD PresidentThese commitments are ambitious. They rely on the historic strengths of CTS, and at the same time require us to grow and change. This report provides insight into some of the strengths that have allowed us to position ourselves for the future; our growing enrollment and diverse student body, our presence in the community providing mental health resources and educating and equipping others to help mitigate poverty and challenge systemic issues, and the generous Faculty, sta, and alumni celebrate at the 2024 Alumni Day

Of this amount, $1,103,191 was provided by scholarship funds in our endowment and $229,159 was funded by our operating budget. Christian Theological Seminary maintains a draw rate of 5% o of our endowment. While scholarships make up 17% of our spending from the endowment, the largest allotment of endowment fund support comes from board designated funds within our endowment. 10SUPPORTING AN EDUCATED MINISTRYLeaving a LegacyEducation has always been the great enabler for Will and Betsy Hine—they’ve made a life not only educating others but pursuing their own lifelong learning. While they have served the church in various capacities, they knew early on that the spark they received from the power of education made them want to serve the world as educators—Betsy as a university librarian at Indiana State University, and Will as Dean of the School of Adult and Continuing Education and a Professor of Education at Eastern Illinois University. It’s how they see themselves as disciples, spreading God’s love throughout the world. The power of education—the way in which education opens the world to people—is also the major reason why they support Christian Theological Seminary.“We believe in the Disciple presence and the education of the clergy,” explains Betsy. “It’s important to have an educated clergy.” To the Hines, an educated clergy creates a ministry that has been intentionally exposed to all people—the people who they will go on to serve. It means space and time to question faith and understand diering perspectives in order to better serve the Church.“CTS has been important for the denomination (Disciples of Christ) in that it broadened their perspective,” adds Will. “They’ve produced clergy who have had dierent backgrounds than the traditional Disciple undergraduate, and that strengthens the local churches they serve. There is a supply of clergy who are open, arming, and culturally aware.”The Hines value the mark Christian Theological Seminary has made on the Disciples of Christ denomination’s open and arming stance.“It’s important because it’s the world we live in,” says Will. “And that’s the world in which the church needs to exist.”Later in life, the Hines have valued—and adopted themselves—Christian Theological Seminary’s focus on the individual student. It’s a value that has extended to their 10Will and Betsy Hine

Betsy has been chair of the board of directors for several years, and the Hines helped to start a student food pantry. Their focus on social service through ministry was an idea that was incubated while they were students at Christian Theological Seminary.“It’s important for the church to have a presence on all campuses, public and private,” says Will. “If students can find some church presence on a campus, they’re much more likely to be involved with the church once they graduate.”The Hines—through Will’s former service as a trustee, and as members of the Legacy Society through a generous estate plan—encourage others to make a planned gift to Christian Theological Seminary so the institution can continue to evolve and stay relevant to students—and to the world in which they will serve. For Betsy, CTS’s renewed mission in counseling is one way the institution is doing just that. “There’s a greater need for counseling in the parish than ever before,” she says. And, for Will, understanding that extends graduates’ abilities to further lead in the denomination. “It’s important to provide dierent perspectives to the students so they can cope with the changing that is happening in society, which will also help the denomination influence as well as adapt to what’s happening in society.”
