Count the Kicks teaches the method for, and importance of, tracking fetal movement daily during the third trimester of pregnancy. Our positive and empowering public health programencourages expectant parents to get to know their baby's normal movement patterns. Count the Kicks also helps empower moms tospeak up if they notice a change in the strength of their baby's movements or how long it takes their baby to get to 10 movements each day.The Count the Kicks program was created by Healthy Birth Day, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of stillbirth. Count the Kicks is based on public health research from Norway that demonstrated a 30% reduction in stillbirth by teaching pregnant women how to monitor fetal movement during the third trimester of pregnancy by doing movement counts on a daily basis. In the first 10 years of the Count the Kicks campaign in Iowa, the state has seen a nearly 32% reduction in the stillbirth rate while the rest of the country has remained relatively stagnant. Published in AJOG and BJOG, evidence shows that expectant parents who utilize Count the Kicks have better birth outcomes.Through partnerships with organizations in more than 30 states, maternal health professionals are able to order FREE Count the Kicks educational materials. These materials are available for a low cost in all other states. Count the Kicks materials make it easy to have a conversation about kick counting with expectant parents. Expectant parents will also be encouraged to download and use the FREE Count the Kicks app, which offers an easy way to monitor their baby’s kicks, jabs, pokes and rolls daily in the third trimester.For more information on our program and the impact of stillbirth in the U.S., visit the National Media page on our website to download the Stillbirth Prevention Fact Sheet.
