Cape Town, South Africa, is a beautiful location, and my students loved their time there. Inaddition to completing internships, students also participated in a variety of outdooradventures, including surfing lessons and an actual safari.I enjoyed watching the students grow in confidence, skills, and their appreciation foranother way of life. The most common things I heard were, “Why can’t we stay longer?”and “I’m coming back!” I highly recommend both the short-term and long-term studyabroad trips offered in Cape Town, South Africa.Internships Abroad through VA CorpsProfessor Courtney Ahrens - Summer 2023 - PSY 4055QR CODE: APPLICATIONFOR THIS SOUTH AFRICASEMESTER PROGRAM

I’ve had the privilege to coordinate a short-termsummer study abroad course for the School ofNursing that focuses on our course, NursingHealthcare Delivery Systems and Leadership Global! Thanks to our partnership with Glasgow CaledonianUniversity School of Nursing, we offer seminars andfield experiences in Scotland and the NationalHealth Service (NHS). 2023STAFFI had the opportunity to study abroad inthe Spring semester of 2019. Whilepursuing my bachelor’s degree in history(and minor in Spanish), I studied abroad inMadrid, Spain at Carlos III University. InSpain, I had the opportunity to visit richhistory and nearby countries, includingPortugal, Italy, England, Morocco, Monaco, and France. I am grateful to have learnedhistorical topics such as the Spanish CivilWar, World History, and Medieval Historythrough Spanish lenses, in the languageand educational system. The quote that best describes my studyabroad experience is: “And then I realized, adventures are the best way to learn.” -AnonymousAbove is a picture of me visiting the Towerof Pisa during Spring Break of 2019. Thankyou for your time, and may my experienceenlighten others to study abroad andcreate great memories of their own!I studied abroad in the summer of 2016 in Ireland!Without a doubt, it was a life-changing experience. Itraveled alone and out of the country for the firsttime in my life. I was nervous at first, but the nervesquickly left once I started my program. I studiedIrish literature at the historic Trinity College campus, met lifelong friends, and made precious memories.I encourage every student to try and make the trip,if possible. It is money well spent, and you will neverregret it. Study Abroad teaches you more aboutyourself and the various cultures and lifestyles ofothers. It truly puts your own life in perspective.Everyone should make an effort to see the worldand all it has to offer!abroadMiranda BatesSenior Communications StrategistOffice of the Provost Nancy LopezAdministrative Support CoordinatorUniversity Center for Undergraduate Advising 10I participated in the Harvard Institute for International Development’s World Teach program andhad the opportunity to teach in Namibia in 2000. However, due to funding changes, I ended up teaching young adultsEnglish Business Communication to help them pass the Pitman Exam. I am delighted to share that87% of my students passed and have since found jobs with their certificates.During my time in Namibia, I had the privilege of celebrating their 10th Independence Anniversaryand even saw Nelson Mandela in person. The reason I traveled to Tokyo, Japan was to gain insightsinto business practices specific to Tokyo. During our visit,we had the opportunity to meet with representatives fromprominent companies such as Starbucks, Bloomberg,Panasonic, Suntory, Deloitte, and Havas Worldwide.Visiting Tokyo had always been a dream of mine, and thechance to immerse myself in Tokyo’s culture firsthand wasan unforgettable experience. To prepare for the trip,Pepperdine organized introductory workshops on Tokyoculture. These workshops covered essential dos and don’tsfor visitors, including learning common phrases, understanding customs, and practicing proper diningetiquette. As a result, when we arrived in Tokyo, we werewell-prepared to conduct ourselves respectfully whilerepresenting Pepperdine. I continue to enthusiasticallyshare this experience with others and encourage fellowstudents to explore study abroad opportunities whenpossible.CSULB Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program Traveling to Barbados in the summer of2022, along with four other awesomepeople, to study rum distilling, was a life-changing experience for me. From crystal-clear water (perfect for snorkeling) just a10-minute walk away, to dancing at theForeday Morning Jam from 11pm to 5am,this trip was an absolute adventure! To get to know the island and its geography, we traveled by submarine under the sea –then via tram through Harrison’s Cave – and overland by an open-air jeep throughjungle and countryside. It is a trip I’ll never forget, filled with picture-perfect momentswith my friends like at the Foursquare Distillery (pictured above). Barbadian rum isbest-in-class, and the people who live there are as well. Check out friendly Barbados! The photo I am submitting captures my “Mario Kart” adventure through downtown Tokyo, with theiconic Tokyo Tower in the background. Despite my initial nervousness (driving on the left side ofthe road was new to me), our guide ensured that everyone in the group had a smooth experience.Although Tokyo temporarily suspended this activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe it isnow back up and running. I highly recommend it as a must-do experience. If you plan toparticipate, remember to obtain your international driver’s license before entering the country. Youcannot obtain one directly in Tokyo; I obtained mine through AAA for $20.Joseph Philli ps Administrative Support Coordinator College of the Arts - Dean’s OfficeAja J. Mack, M.S. I was awarded a sabbatical in 2018 to work with schoollibrarian educators at the University of Borås in Sweden. This university, which is located about an hour east ofGothenburg, offers the most extensive school librarianpreparation in the country. I wanted to explore the schoollibrarianship situation in Sweden firsthand. The objective of my study was to analyze Swedish schoollibraries and Swedish school librarian academic preparationin situ. The University of Borås faculty was overhauling theircurriculum so I worked with them, with special attention topreparing school librarians and strengthening their medialiteracy efforts. To that end, I visited school libraries andregional media centers, guest lectured for three courses, conducted a research seminar on fake news, presentedabout school librarian preparation and media education at aregional library conference, and presented a workshop onactively engaging students, especially in online learningenvironments. I also wrote a report of my findings andrecommendations for the faculty and presented my work atinternational library conferences. Major findings, especially in terms of information and digitalliteracy, included A strong emphasis on källkritik: source evaluation A lively discussion about disinformation, larger than fakenews Attention to online algorithms and their impact onsearching and filter bubbles Awareness and concern about GDPR (General DataProtection Regulation) Lack of collaboration with classroom teachers, thuslimiting the librarian’s role in teaching information anddigital literacy. Need for more school librarians and their preparation. The sabbatical provided a rich case study to investigatehow changes in Sweden’s school libraries may take place. The concrete examples showed how legislation can identifyneeds and provide goals, but that to attain those goals, institutions, and groups need to provide the supportingstructures and content through incentivized commitment. As a Spanish major, I knew I had to study abroad given my career goals as aprofessor. Otherwise, how could I legitimately and authentically convincemy students of the importance and value of studying abroad? As a student-athlete, making it happen wasn’t easy. And while I was not in a position atthat time to negotiate or advocate for myself (as a first-generationstudent), I at least knew that my competitiveness as a job candidatedepended on seizing that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as fear gave wayto excitement. Thirty years later, not a day goes by that I don’t reflect onmy semester in Mexico City and am thankful I don’t have to think aboutwhere I would be today without that experience.Bonnie Gasior, Ph.D.Spanish DepartmentDr. Lesley S.
