Creature Creation
Lesson Objective
The student will learn and discuss about the characteristics of frogs, and create their own creature and identify its characteristics.
Background Information for Teacher
The teacher should have prior knowledge of the characteristics of frogs. We have provided a link in Step 2 where you can review the
different characteristics of frogs. Words in bold are said aloud by the teacher.

any of the book links we have provided in Step 2)

Step 1: Start Video

Step 2: Teach Lesson
Tell the student, today we will learn about frogs and their characteristics. Can you tell what is characteristics? What does it
mean? Allow the student time to respond. (Definition: a feature or quality belonging typically to a person, place, or thing and serving
to identify it). Explain the definition to the student.
Animals have many different characteristics, such as where they live (habitat), what they look like, what they ‘do,’ what
they eat, how they are born, what kind of animal they are (mammal, reptile, etc…), how they live (in groups, alone etc.), how
long they live, what their life cycle is, etc.
All animals, including humans, need certain things to live. Animals need air, water, shelter, and food to survive.
We are going to start by reading a book about frogs. The book we are reading today is called Froggy’s……..

Discuss some of the characteristics of Froggy with the student.
Move the discussion to characteristics of real frogs (you can use this link to research characteristics or use other material you may
As the student starts giving ideas, record them in a Venn diagram (Step 3). In the center, record the characteristics that Froggy has in
common with real frogs. After recording and talking about the different characteristics of real and make-believe frogs, the student can
create their own animal.
Have the student fold the creature creation sheet into thirds. Then they can draw the head, the body, and the tail end. Make sure the
student ends at the dots each time so that the animal’s sections will match up.
Have the student color their animal.

After the animal is ready, have the student write about their animal by completing the Creature Creation worksheet, telling all the
characteristics of their animal; what it eats, where it lives, how it was born, who its enemies are, etc….
They need to be specific and record as many characteristics as they can. It is their animal and they get to create its characteristics
order for the student to have more knowledge of frog characteristics and be able to write about them, make sure to teach enough
characteristics of a frog when having the discussion).

Step 4: Review. Start the next lesson with the game or activity attached below for review so the student can demonstrate
understanding of this lesson before moving forward.

Your Fiction Story (offline) activity
Have the student include the characteristics of their frog from the Creature Creation worksheet they completed on the previous
lesson in a fiction story. Have the student create their own fiction story, and be as creative as they would like. Just remind them to
have fun. For an added challenge have the student paste their story along with the picture of their frog from the previous lesson on a
small poster board and present it to the family.
