Education remains skill based even though the skills taught are so rapidly outdated We know filmmakers are not just working in film but across disciplines and we need to do better to holistically support them Virtual Reality for example requires such a breadth of knowledge from art history to theatrical staging and world building theory that ongoing education is essential Unlocking creative potential is seen as key to economic and societal growth but only 1 in 4 people feel that they are living up to their creative potential Adobe Creativity Study Artists in Washington are losing ground and struggle to make a living in an environment that actually needs artists and their creative problem solving skills in order to meet the demands of the creative economy Pairing artists with these opportunities while supporting them to apply new technology to bedrock knowledge is what is needed now A veteran cinematographer may want to work in 360 but first needs access to equipment and expertise TIBIHXE ETABUCNI HCAET NRAEL KROW The Gig Economy means skillsets are always shifting Because of the acceleration of changing technology no one is keeping up everyone needs re tooling Re tooling is essential to stay relevant and not just for a career but simply to keep pace in everyday life

Arts and culture institutions want to expand into new media territory as well For example Gary Tucker of PNW Ballet wants to learn how to engage the ballet with new media in VR and AR Where does he go Real Estate developers working in office spaces can tell you that more and more co working spaces are being developed every day By working with developers to create the Exchange Lab we give them a great safety zone for investment Even if our programming does not succeed they will have a highly valued asset regardless Government can play a leadership role without needing to adjudicate tiny budgets to small numbers of recipients Businesses across the board find increasing need for creative professionals on short term contract The Exchange would facilitate this need by supporting artists with health insurance on going education to be at the top of their game Schools of a variety of types can expand their offerings by intersecting with the Lab in strategic ways TIBIHXE ETABUCNI HCAET NRAEL KROW Big Tech needs to reach a general population audience to be successful And they need future content creators employees and consumers who are capable of driving their products and services

Self educating via Lynda com isn t often successful because of the last mile problem For example a filmmaker decides to learn After Effects online but doesn t finish the course They understand 7 8ths of the curriculum but not the crucial last 1 8th That s where the lab comes in It is a computer lab for just in time learning staffed by members themselves Project based learning is the most effective learning Showcasing and exhibiting work generated at the lab will introduce audiences to the lab and inspire more work The creative path is the future We need artists and creative thinkers supported in cultural work inspiring asking hard questions and helping to solve our largest community problems TIBIHXE ETABUCNI HCAET NRAEL KROW In the 1990 s Kinko s was an entryway to learning desktop publishing Kinko s saw a hole that schools weren t filling and artists and educators benefited greatly Whether it s 3D printing or small scale app development once again there is a lot of technology that independent creatives do not have access to We want the Creative Exchange Lab to provide that access and be the Kinko s of the 21st century

TIBIHXE ETABUCNI HCAET NRAEL KROW This project engages Lake Washington Girls Middle School LWGMS artists from the BeAnother Lab in Barcelona and local artists and filmmakers in conducting live VR experiments using Oculus Rifts and the Machine To Be Another We will be working with teachers from the LWGMS STEAM program to develop psychology and science based curriculum that will educate a new generation of media learners in immersive technology its similarities and differences with traditional media and its relationship to empathy And we will be asking big tech to fund it
