6 • CANADIAN PETROLEUM CONTRACTOR • OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 • CANADIAN PETROLEUM CONTRACTOR • 7 As the world shifts towards renewable and alternative energy sources, the role of petroleum contractors in the energy industry is undergoing a transformation. The demand for traditional fossil fuels is declining, and the need for alternative fuels is on the rise. In this article, we will explore how petroleum contractors are adapting to the shift towards alternative fuels and what the future holds for them. THE ROLE OF PETROLEUM CONTRACTORS INTHE ENERGYINDUSTRYPetroleum contractors play a vital role in the energy industry, specifically in the ser-vice and construction of service stations and installation of generator systems. These professionals are responsible for ensuring the efficient and safe operation of these facilities, which are crucial for the distribution and production of petroleum products. Service stations serve as import-ant points of contact between petroleum companies and consumers, providing fuel and other essential services. Petroleum contractors are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of service stations, ensuring that they meet all safety and environmental standards. In addition to service stations, many petroleum contractors also play a critical role in the construction and maintenance of generators systems. Generators are es-sential for backup power supply in various industries, including hospitals, data cen-ters, and manufacturing plants. Petroleum contractors are responsible for installing and maintaining these generators to en-sure a reliable power source in case of grid failures or emergencies. They ensure that the generators are properly sized, installed correctly, and regularly serviced to avoid any disruptions in power supply. The role of petroleum contractors goes beyond just construction and installation. They also provide ongoing maintenance services to ensure optimal performance and prevent any potential issues. Regu-lar inspections, testing, and maintenance are conducted to identify and address any problems before they escalate. Petrol-eum contractors also stay up-to-date with industry regulations, safety standards, and best practices to ensure compli-ance and minimize risks associated with petrol-eum operations.THE SHIFT TOWARDS ALTERNATIVE FUELSThe shift towards alternative fuels is driven by several factors, including con-cerns over climate change, the desire for energy independence, and the need for sustainable energy sources. Alternative fuels include biofuels, hydrogen, solar, wind, and geothermal energy, among others. The Canadian government has set a target of net-zero emissions by 2050, and this has led to a significant invest-ment in alternative fuel projects. ®Take advantage of low fuel costs by buying in bulk with a Meridian Fuel Tank. 8 • CANADIAN PETROLEUM CONTRACTOR • OCTOBER 2023TYPES OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS> Biofuels Biofuels are derived from renewable biomass sources, such as agricultural crops, waste, and algae. They can be used as a substitute for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Biofuels can be either first-generation or second-generation. First-generation biofuels are produced from food crops, such as corn, sugarcane, and soybean. Second-generation bio-fuels are produced from non-food crops, such as switchgrass, wood chips, and corn stover.> HydrogenHydrogen is a clean and renewable energy source that can be produced from a variety of sources, such as water, biomass, and natural gas. It can be used as a fuel for transportation, power generation, and heating. Hydrogen has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, as it only pro-duces water vapor when burned.> Electric power Electric power is generated from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, and hydro power. It can be used as a substitute for gasoline and diesel in electric vehicles. Electric power is a clean and sustainable energy source that can help reduce emissions and improve air quality.ADVANTAGES OF ALTERNATIVEFUELS> Reduced emissionsAlternative fuels produce fewer emis-sions than traditional fossil fuels. Bio-fuels produce 60-90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline. Hydrogen produces no emissions when burned, only water vapor. Electric power produ-ces no emissions when generated from renewable sources.> Improved air qualityAlternative fuels can help improve air quality by reducing the amount of harmful pollutants released into the atmosphere. Biofuels produce less par-ticulate matter and nitrogen oxides than gasoline and diesel. Hydrogen produces no particulate matter or nitrogen ox-ides. Electric vehicles produce no tail-pipe emissions.> Cost-effectiveAlternative fuels can be cost-effective in the long run. While the initial cost of alternative fuel vehicles may be higher than traditional vehicles, they can save money in the long run through reduced fuel costs. The cost of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, is also decreasing, making electric power a more cost-effective energy option.CHALLENGES & LIMITATIONS OFALTERNATIVE FUELS> InfrastructureOne of the main challenges of alterna-tive fuels is the lack of infrastructure. For example, there are currently limited hydrogen fueling stations in the world, which limits the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Similarly, there are limited electric vehicle charging sta-tions in many areas.> CostWhile alternative fuels can be cost-ef-fective in the long run, the initial cost of vehicles and infrastructure can be high. This can limit the adoption of alternative fuels, particularly in low-income areas.> Energy densityAlternative fuels, such as biofuels and hydrogen, have lower energy density than gasoline and diesel. This means that more fuel is required to travel the same distance, which can limit the range of vehicles.Alternative fuels include biofuels, hydrogen, solar, wind, and geothermal energy, among others.

Getting the best [policy] terms and conditions and hav-ing the right [insurance] program—that’s one thing. But it’s really about dependabil-ity [of fleet safety] for the insurance com-panies. It’s a huge focus right now, with the types of large losses we’re seeing in trans-portation occurring in Canada and [particu-larly] in the U.S.”One obstacle in developing driver score-cards is that fleets harness data from mul-tiple sources, said Ward Warkentin, CEO of Fleetmetrica, a data analytics company for the transportation industry. The issue is how to integrate all the data for use in a single, comprehensive driver scorecard program. In some instances, trucking fleets may have to choose between data sources. For example, Warkentin recalled a recent cus-tomer visit he had with a trucking fleet client. “They had speeding data coming from three different sources, so they had to decide which sources they were going to use to pro-vide feedback to the drivers,” he said.“They had the speeding events coming from the telematics supplier themselves. They had speeding events coming from an enhanced service that monitors over posted speed limits, SpeedGauge, and then they had another device for the video cameras [that was] generating speeding [data]. It’s not just pulling all that [data] together. It’s actually having to make some choices about which metrics, which data you can roll with as part of your scorecard program.”A second obstacle is a lack of personnel or resources, Palmer said. “One of the biggest challenges I see fleets having is finding the resour-ces and having the systems to be able to manage these large amounts of data and be proactive with how they’re managing driver perform-ance and driver behaviour.”Automation is key to a success-ful driver scorecard system, as he and Warkentin observed. The fre-quency of sharing data with drivers is a key ingredient in the success of a driver scorecard program, War-kentin said. He recommended shar-ing driver performance feedback as often as possible to enhance fleet safety.“I often see scorecards set up so that drivers might only get the scorecards quar-terly or monthly, when there’s an opportun-ity to get that feedback more frequently — weekly, daily,” says Warkentin.“[Increased frequency] is helping the organization be more proactive. You’re not waiting for a driver’s performance to get to a point where it’s so bad that it results in an accident. You’re reacting sooner, so that you’re actually preventing that accident.”You might even be improving driver retention, if you share the scorecards with the good drivers, said Warkentin.“There’s a situation where fleets tend to want to just deal with drivers that are having issues,” he said. But “sharing information with drivers who are doing a good job and hav-ing that be part of your scorecard program is really key….“There’s an opportunity to not just pro-vide feedback on their performance but also use it as an opportunity to reward them. Positive feedback, not just improvement-re-lated feedback, goes a long way in helping with driver retention, for sure.”Insurers urge trucking fleetsto use telematics data moreproactivelyby David Gambrill, Editor-In-Chief, Canadian UnderwriterPositive feedback goes a long way in helping with driver retentionDavid Gambrill is the Editor-In-Chief for Canadian Under-writer.
