W H Y SI ERR A LE O N E POVERTY IN SIERRA LEONE According to t h e Un i te d N a t i o ns H u ma n Developm e n t I n d ex U N H D I 505 89 52 38 Gross Domestic Product GDP per capita of Sierra Leoneans have no electricit y no toilets no running water of Sierra Leoneans drop out of school af ter six th grade of children under the age of five are malnourished or stunted 184 Sierra Leone is ranked th poorest nation in the world of 188 ranked And what does the Lord require of you To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6 8 The Child Rescue Centre CRC was established in 2000 to save the lives of 40 children living alone on the streets of Bo Sierra Leone The CRC now serves over 600 children throughout Sierra Leone helping them to remain with their families stay in school receive medical care and thrive As the Child Reintegration Centre they will change the way that Sierra Leone cares for children ensuring that there are NO MORE ORPHANS living on the streets in that country Mercy Hospital was launched to address inadequate access to medical services and alarming risks to maternal and infant survival such as malnutrition malaria and HIV Mercy Hospital serves an average of 700 patients each month at the hospital and hundreds more via mobile outreach to a network of surrounding villages Through trusted partnerships with churches schools and social welfare organizations Helping Children Worldwide is lifting families and communities out of extreme poverty illiteracy illness and despair More than a hundred CRC students have graduated secondary school going on to become doctors engineers teachers journalists and community leaders The CRC maintains an annual case load of approximately 600 children from extremely vulnerable backgrounds Thousands of mothers and babies have been saved through Mercy Hospital s interventions Through micro finance and parent training families are becoming stable and able to care for their own Village partnerships help to lift entire communities out of extreme poverty by providing clean water sanitation school improvements and family empowerment Learn more at www helpingchildrenworldwide org
