Our Twin Lakes Recreation...Neeter Shamberger Lifelong Council Grove Resident, Lake Recreation EnthusiastI believe the Riverwalk Amphitheater is truly one of the most important projects in Council Grove in the past 20 years. It has created a sense of pride for the community by having a venue where the citizens are proud to show off and host entertainment and events. The facility can host concerts, plays, musicals, weddings, community events, group meetings, movie nights, etc. Ever since the opening of the Amphitheater, there have been several national acts that have played here, and all of them have told us how nice the look of the facility is; and how good the sound quality is and rates right up there with the more famous venues like “Red Rocks” in Colorado.I believe that for a small community such as Council Grove, to have such a facility is truly a unique jewel that we all can be proud of. I invite all citizens and visitors to come and enjoy and don’t hesitate to brag it up a little to the rest of the world.Locals love... Trail parking is also available at Allegawaho Park (X Avenue & South 525 Road)The Pioneer Nature Trail is located three miles northwest of Historic Council Grove. The 1.25-mile-long trail offers many wildlife viewing opportunities due to the abundance of wildowers, butteries, birds, mammals, and reptiles that make their home along & in the area of the trail.Another very interesting feature along this trail that is explained in more detail by an interpretive wayside sign that is located on the trail is the presence of buffalo wallows. The wallows were created back in the 1800s when millions of buffalo roamed the tall grass prairie region of the United States. Some wallows were 30 feet across and more than 2 feet deep, and the remnants of the wallows that remain along the trail still benet wildlife by providing protection, a nesting area to raise young, and a source of water during the rainy season.Just 18 miles south of Council Grove is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, one of over 390 parks in the National Park System. Delavan’s Grandview Township Community Center, converted from the original Delavan Grade School. Dunlap, Kansas Population 27This almost ghost town is a fascinating experience. Founded in 1869, by Joseph Dunlap on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY) Railway line, and incorporated in 1875, its population has been on a steady decline since topping out at 400 in the 1900s. During the Black migration from the South in the 1870s and 1880s some 40,000 African-Americans came to Kansas. Dunlap resident Benjamin “Pap” Singleton, a former slave, incorporated the Singleton Dunlap Farm Colony and brought 200 black settlers to Dunlap for a new beginning. Dunlap is also home to the newly renovated Dunlap Museum and Learning Academy, our Morris County Historical Society is on a mission to make sure this rural community is never forgotten. A must-see for history buffs and equality seekers is the Dunlap Colored Cemetery, also known as the Exoduster Cemetery. Dunlap’s Colored Cemetery was built in response to segregation and prejudice against the Exoduster community. The cemetery was rst established in 1880 and is now occupied by over a hundred African American graves. Dunlap’s Colored Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 14, 2018. Locals love... Curious about Dunlap’s Exodusters?
