Assessment:A chapter may vote to support an activity/event/cause that is not includedin the chapter budget and the expense would be assessed per member.Badge fee:Each member organization has a badge/pin. Some organizations require amember to purchase a badge and others include it in the initiation fee.Badges may be very simple or jeweled. If a member is purchasing herbadge, she determines how much or little she would like to spend.Campus obligation:These funds are used when a chapter is asked to donate funds to otherorganizations and/or fundraising opportunities on campus.Chapter dues:These monies fund member activities including programming,recruitment, chapter supplies and chapter operations.Composite:An annual photograph is taken of each chapter’s membership. Thisexpense can be included in chapter dues or billed separately.Initiation fee:Fee paid to finalize initial membership in the organization.Liability/riskmanagementinsurance:This fee covers insurance-related costs for the safety of members, theirguests and sorority property. Funds may also be used for specialprogramming relating to risk management concerns on campus or withinthe chapter.New member fee:Fee paid to establish membership in the organization.Panhellenic dues:These funds are used to support Panhellenic operations. Examples ofitems that may be included in the Panhellenic budget are attendingconferences, office operations, marketing and electronic media.Per capita fee:Fee paid to inter/national organization per member to support overallsorority operations.Philanthropy fee:Philanthropy fee: Each chapter has a philanthropy and some have localcauses they support. This fee can be included in chapter dues or billedseparately.Purchase fund:This fund is set up at the beginning of each term to pay for things notincluded in chapter dues. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSPanhellenic Council at George MasonWhy is it necessary to pay to be in asorority?Like many student organizations, funding from a college campus islimited or nonexistent. The fees associated with membership improvethe experience for each sister by allowing each chapter to host eventsfor sisterhood, philanthropy, and more. Each chapter’s budget is brokendown for active sisters so you know exactly what you are getting fromthese up-front costs. Why are New Member fees different fromActive Member fees?When you join a national or international organization, you are putinto that organization’s national system as a member. Think of theseextra fees are a sort of “processing fee” for the new member to beofficially recognized by the organization on a higher level. Do my parents have to pay for this?No! It is extremely common for members of the George MasonPanhellenic community to pay their own dues!Are these fees charged through George MasonAccount Services?No. Each chapter has their own designated way of charging members.These platforms include, but are not limited to, OmegaFi, BillHighway, and more. Will there be time for me to discuss financesduring primary recruitment weekend?Yes! Each chapter is required by the Panhellenic Executive Board togo over financial obligations on day two (Saturday). This is a greatopportunity to ask about payment plans and how they budget. If youfeel strongly about membership fees, feel free to ask at any time!
