Take a look at the bright 18-year-old Bhea Daniela O. Manlunas, someone who is starting her first year at Davao Doctors Collegeas a nursing student. I, passionately embraced the process oflearning that led upon my entrance into the fields of education, particularly in the interesting subject of Understanding the Self, where I had been given the privilege to get mentoring from thegreat Sir Pilipino Baguio. It feels like I'm sailing into undiscovered territory when I embarkon a self-reflection journey. It's simple to lose sight of thedetails that make each of us unique in the rush of dailyexistence. This reflective journey about Understanding the Selfis my guide through the maze of ideas, a purposefulinvestigation to find the hidden gems. Come along with me as Iexplore my own self-discovery and reveal the thoughts about allof the lessons that connect my past, present, and future selves.INTRODUCTION1 Take a look at the bright 18-year-old Bhea Daniela O. THE CONCEPT OF SELF FROM VARIOUSPHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVEWhen I think about the various philosophical perspectives on the idea of the self, Icome across a lot of fascinating concepts, especially when it comes to the trinityof mind, body, and soul. I consider the complicated connection between the mindand body as I navigate to the concept of the self from various philosophicalperspectives. While thinking back on the philosophical viewpoints of self, opinionssimultaneously push me to accept impermanence and interconnectedness. It encourages reflection on personal accountability and genuineness, whereasspiritual traditions allude to a soul that is transcendent. The self appears as aliving, breathing being that is integrated into society, awareness, and possiblyeven something beyond. It calls me to reflect on, change, and combine thesevarious viewpoints into a unique comprehension of where I belong in the largerpicture of existence.2 THE CONCEPT OF SELF FROM VARIOUSPHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVEWhen I think about the various philosophical perspectives on the idea of the self, Icome across a lot of fascinating concepts, especially when it comes to the trinityof mind, body, and soul. 3SELF FROM SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVESociologically speaking, reflecting on oneself is thinking about one's identity, behaviors, andviews in connection with society as a whole. It's a detailed study that takes consideration ofhow interactions, groups, and social structures shape personal experiences. Upon reflectingon the idea of self from a sociological perspective, a few important characteristics occur.According to Charles Cooley's concept of the "looking glass self," our perception of ourselvesis shaped by how we believe others see us. This viewpoint highlights how important socialinteractions are in forming our identities. When I think back on my own life, I consider how myperception of myself has been shaped by comments from peers, family, and society ingeneral. Because I’m so closely tie with people such as my friends and family, social interactions areessential to the my sociological self. In the context of societal frameworks, theserelationships play an important role in determining my identity, roles, and actions. Thankingthese social connections for their support is a way to recognize their impact on mydevelopment of the self as a person and sense of participation within the community. 3SELF FROM SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVESociologically speaking, reflecting on oneself is thinking about one's identity, behaviors, andviews in connection with society as a whole. SELF FROM ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVEThe self is seen in this concept as a dynamic entity that is formed bycultural factors. Social expectations, cultural standards, and beliefs are allcrucial in shaping a person's identity. This perspective highlights how aperson's view of self is not apart but rather tightly interconnected into thestructure of their cultural surroundings, emphasising the connectionbetween their own identities and a wider cultural background. It takes acombination of self-awareness, empathy, effective communication, andgood acts to unleash the "better self" towards your social circle and family.4 SELF FROM ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVEThe self is seen in this concept as a dynamic entity that is formed bycultural factors. Another interesting area of my journey has been seeing the changes in my bodythat are unavoidable as time goes on. Changes in my size, body type, andpreferences are obvious indicators of the ongoing change that comes with growingolder. I'm a nursing student who has become tangled down in the demands ofstudying, frequently ignoring the necessary elements of self-care. The shortamount of time available has resulted in moments of neglect, such as skippingmeals, quitting routines of exercise, and failing to do self-care activities. It's reallyan opening to dive into the study of the physical self, especially as a nursingstudent. In regard to life's chaotic pace, it was an alarming reminder of how important it is toprioritize physical well-being. I realized that maintaining a fit and healthy body isreally important, and I had to take action. The importance of scheduling time forhealthy eating, consistent exercise, and self-care routines has been highlighted byincreased understanding of the complexities of the body. It is a profoundrecognition that a state of physical health plays a key role in general well-being,and it goes beyond simple aesthetics. My perspective has changed as a result ofthis reflective journey, pushing me to reconsider my priorities and make time eachday for thoughtful acts of self-care. It is an important reminder that taking care ofoneself physically is an investment in extended life and the foundation of abalanced, healthy existence, even in the face of life's responsibilities and thechallenges of studies.PHYSICAL SELF5 Another interesting area of my journey has been seeing the changes in my bodythat are unavoidable as time goes on. PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF Understanding more about my psychological self has allowed me to gaina better understanding of the complex network of ideas and feelings thatinfluence my everyday life. A recurring theme is the strength of self-awareness, which helps me understand my actions and motivates me tokeep improving. By taking all of these components apart, I've been able tochallenge my beliefs and develop an attitude that encourages growth.Recognizing the impact of past experiences on my current mental stateis essential to this reflection. I acknowledge my flaws and practice self-compassion while building confidence and awareness. Improvingpsychological well-being requires doing actionable things like therapy, mindfulness exercises, and consciously forming healthy habits. Thiscontinual journey has shaped not only my perception of myself but alsohow I interact with the outside world, which is a tribute to thetransformational power of self-awareness.6 PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF Understanding more about my psychological self has allowed me to gaina better understanding of the complex network of ideas and feelings thatinfluence my everyday life. It has been a life-changing experience to explore my sexual self and overcome both personaland societal inhibitions. I've discovered that my sexual identity is flexible and changes withexperiences as I've learnt to embrace myself. Discovering every aspect of my sexual identityhas been a freeing and enlightening journey through the maze of self-discovery. I battledstereotypes and accepted the flexibility of my boundaries and needs in the face of socialrestrictions and personal uncertainty. The value of open communication was highlighted bythis trip, with friends as well as with myself. Recognizing the complex facets of my own sexuality is just as important as the tangibleexperiences. I feel empowered and confident as I go across this environment because Irealize that my aspirations are changing and evolving throughout time. As guiding concepts, consent and boundaries developed, fostering positive relationships and respect for oneanother. A sex-positive worldview has been ingrained as a result of this study, a viewpointthat rejects shame and embraces the wide range that comprises human sexuality. Myreflection, as I continue to explore this complicated environment, is a witness to thecontinuous process of self-acceptance and the significant influence that accepting andunderstanding one's sexual identity can have on promoting genuine connections andpersonal fulfillment.SEXUAL SELF7 It has been a life-changing experience to explore my sexual self and overcome both personaland societal inhibitions. The Western concept of self is intimately connected to ideas ofindividuality and human action. The Western self, shaped byphilosophical roots from philosophers such as Descartes and Locke, aswell as changes in culture during the Enlightenment, places asignificant focus on humanity's independence, self-determination, andthe pursuit of individual objectives. This philosophy promotesindividuality and self-expression by emphasizing the idea that peoplecan mold their own fates through rational reasoning and free will. InWestern nations, the self is frequently viewed as a separate creaturewith distinct goals, rights, and duties, leading to a cultural frameworkthat emphasizes individual rights and the pursuit of personalfulfillment.WESTERN AND EASTERN CONCEPT OF SELFWESTERN SELFEASTERN SELFThe Eastern view of self, as reflected in philosophies such as Hinduismand Buddhism, differs from Western individualism by emphasizingconnectivity, temporariness, and the breakdown of the individual ego.The self (the soul) is regarded part of the universal reality (the divine) inEastern thought, particularly in Hindu philosophy, underlining aninherent unity with all things. Buddhist philosophy provides theconcept of anatta, emphasizing the absence of a permanent, unchanging self. The Eastern self is frequently considered as atemporary problems formed by karma and reincarnation, generating asense of interdependence with the greater order of the universe. Thisviewpoint differs with the Western emphasis on individual identity, emphasizing a more fluid and interrelated idea of the self within thestructure of reality.8 The Western concept of self is intimately connected to ideas ofindividuality and human action. SPIRITUAL SELFRaised in a religiously-minded household, my family's values have had a significant impact on my spiritualgrowth. I accepted the guidance that pointed me in the direction of a closer relationship with God at ayoung age. This foundation has grown to be a source of comfort and strength, promoting a deepdependence on Him in difficult situations. My identity's spiritual self has given me a strong feeling ofpurpose, moral clarity, and perseverance. It is more than just a system of ideas; it's a living, breathing forcethat gives my life purpose and a profound sense of belonging to something bigger than myself. I've cometo understand that the spiritual self is not limited to rituals but rather permeates every aspect of everydayexistence. It acts as a compass, providing moral guidance and influencing my decisions and deeds. Mypersonality has a connection with this aspect, which serves as an anchor and enhances and harmonizeswith other aspects of my life. Accepting spiritual strength has made it possible to live life to its fullest. One major aspect of my modern life has been how technology has shaped my digital self. Mobile phonesand laptops have been an advantage and a source of self-awareness in my life in a time where they arepractically necessary instruments. As a teenager dealing the world of technology, I find myself extremelyactive in social media—a platform that offers an outlet for unrestrained self-expression and a glimpseinto other people's minds. For someone who is introverted, like me, being able to watch my favoritemovies without having to leave the comfort of my room is a lifesaver. However, there are disadvantagesto this dependence on technology. One tangible aspect that shows the possible consequences of leaningtoo heavily on technology is the fear of engaging with people outside of the digital space. The way that I tremble nervously during in-person talks when I'm not using a gadget highlights how thisdependence affects my social interactions. I recognize the importance of my digital self in theconnected world of today, and that it affects not just my online persona but also my chances in mypersonal as well as professional life. It is now clear that maintaining this digital identity requires strikinga balance between relationship-building, efficient communication, and cautiously navigating the digitalenvironment. This reflective journey makes a person think about how to balance the benefits anddisadvantages of being overly dependent on technology. It emphasizes how crucial it is to usetechnology for human development and connection while being aware of its possible consequences. Inorder to maintain the true essence of my interactions with others while introducing technology into mylife in a balanced manner, managing my digital persona becomes an essential skill.DIGITAL SELF10 One major aspect of my modern life has been how technology has shaped my digital self.
