weather conditions including temperatures as low as 4 C to 20 C strong winds up to 80kph some days and rain SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE SHINE UNDER PRESSURE I t s often during critical situations that the true skills and experience of our people is revealed This was certainly the case when a High Voltage Direct Current HVDC conductor wire fell across State Highway 7 in the Weka Pass area Waikari in North Canterbury New Zealand What started out as a standard day quickly escalated when the southern lines team part of our broader Electricity Gas team received the call at 3 08pm regarding the fault which caused the line to fall Partnering with our client the team jumped to action dispatching a helicopter to the location Field teams were also mobilised and sent to site to clear the road and open the Highway The Highway was reopened that evening but the critical work of restoring the line and power continued To complicate matters further New Zealand went into a level 4 COVID 19 lockdown on the same day and the area was experiencing a range of poor Arriving at the location the team in the helicopter reported that the damage was worse than expected with a number of additional issues said Ventia Operations Manager Mike O Brien Our client Transpower set up a national response team to manage the repair process that included Ventia people this team met daily Ventia also set up an on the ground southern response team located at the Islington office which was supported by the local Transpower service delivery manager and engineer At the peak of the operation we had approximately 40 staff on site including sub contractors The team utilised all equipment at their disposal including cranes crane trucks diggers a bulldozer tractor winches and helicopters Most of the responding team were accommodated in Amberley 40 minutes north of Islington and the work site was an hour north of Islington meaning travel was required to and from site on a daily basis Extra support staff were also mobilised from Washdyke Wellington Rotorua Napier and Hamilton Keeping staff fed also proved a challenge due to businesses being closed during the lockdown A creative solution was reached by engaging a local caf at Waikari to feed the team this in itself took a bit of organising as the Caf staff needed to be added to the isolation bubble and become essential workers responding to the fault This repair would not have been possible in the time frame without the involvement of both the Washdyke and Islington depots said Ventia Operations Manager Mike O Brien The prompt response and synergies between the two teams expedited the repair process on this unique critical asset 20 CLIENT FOCUSED Mike O Brien Delivering for our client in very trying conditions and difficult terrain Working safely on critical equipment The Washdyke crews were able to load equipment and mobilise that evening allowing them along with the Islington team to start the repair process at first light Our people did an exceptional job of not only rapidly responding to the issue but also meeting and responding to every challenge that was thrown at them he said The prompt response and synergies between the two teams expedited the repair process on this unique critical asset The response included innovating on the run and also working as one with our client to meet the end objective There were so many people who did a great job including Andrew Middlemiss who was critical to the success of this difficult repair His knowledge experience and calm manner allowed him to manage the fault repair work through all the challenges and guide the team to successfully restore the circuit in very trying conditions and difficult terrain Critically all the work was done safely and we were able to get the power restored for the residents of the local area Ventia General Manager Electricity and Gas Australia and New Zealand Craig MacDonald echoed these thoughts Ventia has been a trusted partner to Transpower for more than two decades Our team provide maintenance and project services to Transpower to support the delivery of electricity 24 7 New Zealand wide through 11 238 route kilometres of high voltage transmission line 60 route kilometres of underground and submarine transmission cable 40 674 supporting towers and poles 169 substations and 1 093 transformers The Electricity and Gas crew arrive at site 21

KEEPING FACILITIES HUMMING FOR OUR HEALTH CLIENTS R esponsiveness flexibility and an unrelenting commitment to deliver service excellence to our clients in the health sector is something all four of our contracts have in common The high standard of services we provide at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney was recognised by General Manger for the hospital Alison Zecchin who says that every time Project Director Michael and his team are presented with a challenge they come back with a solution to deliver what the client needs Alison noted that the COVID 19 pandemic threw plenty of challenges at the team many of which showed them all how hospitals of the future should be built Michael s knowledge of these buildings and the expertise he has contributed has significantly contributed to the care of our patients and staff Alison said When asked what he and his team do differently to achieve such great results Michael said that they ve stepped up to deliver projects required for COVID 19 related works as the hospital has adapted to the evolving needs of the hospital Operational excellence from a clinical standpoint can only be achieved when we have a partner like Ventia L uke Felicetti Director Corporate Services Healthscope We have been flexible and supported the client as needed throughout these changes Michael says Flexibility and adaptability often go hand in hand and are important attributes for a contract team particularly during the early days of a contract and even more so during a pandemic when you work in essential services Project Director Jonathan Woodman and his team on the centralAlliance Facilities Maintenance and Hotel Services contract on New Zealand s North Island have demonstrated their flexibility since mobilising earlier this year as they support the client in delivering exceptional health care to their communities Jonathan and his team of around 280 employees across three major facilities in the regions covered by the MidCentral and Whanganui District Health Boards provide services including a 24 7 service desk facilities engineering and maintenance hotel services security and fleet management During the periods in which the region was under heaviest lockdown as we revaluated the need to perform some of the less urgent business as usual activities such as mowing lawns and the annual planting program Jonathan made team members available to the client for more urgent hospital activities Constructing additional facilities for the management of COVID 19 activities for Austin Health in Victoria 24 CLIENT FOCUSED Facilities had additional requirements during this period including higher intensity cleaning and management of access at site that we were able to Delivering service excellence to our clients in the health sector support them with Jonathan says In addition to the work we ve done revalidating essential systems like the HVAC in operating theatres to make them COVID ready we have assisted the health boards to rapidly stand up COVID vaccination centres This all demonstrates our willingness to go above and beyond to ensure service excellence Service excellence is also the priority for the team at the Northern Beaches Hospital in Sydney where we manage asset and utilities maintenance medical gasses gardening and landscape management as a 24 7 support service for client Healthscope Delivering world class services for patients is a key priority for our client and over the past year Project Director Philip Downie and his team have focused on ensuring the facility performs to a high standard so the hospital staff can get on with their jobs The service we provide enables the wonderful clinicians to provide the best care possible to their patients he says We are fully committed to achieving excellence for the client working together as a cohesive team Director Corporate Services at Healthscope Luke Felicetti says their focus on ensuring their services are market competitive and that the organisation can deliver sustainable growth requires the ongoing support of Ventia Operational excellence from a clinical standpoint can only be achieved when we have a partner like Ventia who is focused on efficient and effective asset management In Victoria Project Director Phil Treeby and his team on the Austin Health contract have been supporting their client as they reassessed their infrastructure needs To accommodate the need for COVID 19 vaccination facilities the team recently constructed two large marquees adjacent to part of the Austin Hospital complex in Heidelberg in Melbourne s north east The marquees have been built to last for at least the next 12 months and provide much needed space for this vital activity The commitment of the team to go above and beyond to support our client as they deliver urgent care to the community is commendable Phil says In addition to these structures over the past year Phil and his team of 60 have restructured wards to accommodate patients with COVID 19 expanded the ICU and relocated short stay facilities The trades team have supported this ongoing process magnificently Phil says Their dedication to ensure we VENTIA PROGRAM TAKES TO THE SKIES Our pilots fly missions across Australia and New Zealand daily S ince its establishment in 2017 Ventia s drone solutions program now has a team of around 30 in house certified pilots across Australia and New Zealand and a fleet of state of the art drones On average the team fly missions each day to perform tasks in a safer faster and more cost effective way Chief Pilot Gary Dring says the pilots come from a diverse array of backgrounds and includes carpenters engineers accountants and environmental scientists The team fly missions each day to perform tasks in a safer faster and more cost effective way Gary Dring There are countless applications for drones across the industry but at Ventia we have used them primarily in asset inspections environmental monitoring aerial mapping and photogrammetry vegetation mapping thermal imaging and aerial photography and videography 28 INNOVATIVE Katie Selhorst SURVEYING Surveying weeds feral animals native species and other flora and fauna across large areas of land that are not accessible by foot can be challenging unless you re a licensed drone pilot like Senior Ecologist on our Defence Base Services DBS contract Katie Selhorst Joining the contract in 2020 Katie says now that she is licensed through our inhouse drone solutions team Katie now undertakes the surveys instead of subcontracting them Katie says one of the benefits of using drones in the surveying is the lack of disruption to native animal populations You can cause stress to the animals while conducting various survey methodologies These ground surveys unintentionally cause the animals to move while walking the transects as you re on their turf Katie explains With drones we can use thermal imaging which doesn t bother the animals in this instance removing that stress factor but also meaning we get a more accurate picture of the species density and locations on base Tyson Lowe SKILLING UP OUR GRADUATES Mechanical Engineering graduate Tyson Lowe joined Ventia s graduate program at the start of 2020 Over the two year program Ventia s graduates undertake three rotations two in year one and a final 12 month rotation in their second year Tyson is currently on his year long placement with our corporate drone solutions program and says it s been a great opportunity as he has achieved his Remote Pilots License RePL and aeronautical radio operators certificate He has also logged over 25hrs flight time and conducted several missions for Ventia contracts in WA in the Transport and Telco sectors This is a really multifaceted role Tyson says I ll also be taking up the role of maintenance controller which is part of our CASA Civil Aviation Safety Authority requirements This will involve undertaking a certified maintenance course so I can look after the drones and perform the required periodic servicing Other drone projects underway include work with a local Indigenous group in Western Australia where we re providing support and advice on drone operations and an inspection of maritime assets using drones in Perth This second project provides efficiencies to the contract through reduced mobilisation time and ensures the vessels remain available for other works as required In Queensland we ve conducted a trial of SkyDio drones on our South East Queensland Schools contract The deployed drone scanned a newly constructed building with minimal pilot input Gary says this technology will help Ventia capture increasingly meaningful datasets on a range of traditionally difficult assets to inspect If you re interested in exploring how drones could be used on your project or if you re keen to become one of Ventia s drone pilots contact Gary Dring via email gary dring ventia com Scan code to learn more about our drone capabilities 29
