Their focus on redening service excellence and commitment to delivery was put to the test recently when, as preferred supplier, Ventia was asked to turn a 3,500-bed camp into hotel-style accommodation near Darwin – within nine working days.In true Ventia style, the Defence Accommodation Precinct Mobilisation Team leapt into action, led by DBS Project Director Pauline Fitzgerald who provided the leadership, passion and energy to get the job done. They rolled up their sleeves to stock the kitchen, make beds, clean rooms, and set up equipment for the rst 600 guests.Hayley French, National Service Delivery Manager ew in from Victoria to support the set-up. “This was an all-hands-on deck project,” Hayley said. “We had sta working alongside managers at all levels to ensure this project was delivered on time and to the standard of excellence that we work to at Ventia. “Everyone was involved. Our GM of Defence Base Services even removed palm fronds and debris from the garden, cleaned rooms and made beds. 10 11QUICK RESPONSE SAVES THE DAYHIGHLY COMMENDED: EMERGENCY ALERTING SYSTEM TEAMChris Janssen, Sunny Lai, Kristine Volkerts and Tayla QuickCONNECT 21A quick response in an emergency can keep communities safe and save lives. During a time of peak activity, Fire and Rescue Victoria (FRV) was aected by a signicant cybersecurity incident that jeopardised their emergency response systems. The cyberattack disrupted their call centre phone system, which is essential for notifying reghters of triple-zero calls and mobilising them swily.Realising the urgency of the situation, Chris Janssen and his Emergency Alerting System (EAS) Team, Sunny Lai, Kristine Volkerts and Tayla Quick put their heads together and suggested using pagers to alert metropolitan stations.“We were able to identify a workable solution for FRV using paging technology and then set about nding a way of fast-tracking a deployment that normally takes months.” Chris said.“The solution allowed re-automation of FRV’s critical response capability, saving valuable time in mobilising re ghters to emergency incidents. A monumental eort from the team that contributed to Emergency Services personnel keeping our community safe.”The Victorian Government renewed and extended the EAS contract including a lifecycle refresh program to ensure the reliability of emergency services communications in Victoria.Chris adds: “With emergency services organisations’ increasing reliance on communications, this upgrade will build on 20 years of operational and design experience and take the reliability and resilience of the EAS to the next level.”Ventia designed, constructed, and installed a sophisticated, purpose-built, and fully redundant emergency services communications network, comprising satellite, terrestrial and 4G wireless links, 233 wireless ground base stations resilient core soware to alert paid and volunteer rst responders across the State of Victoria. The solution allowed re-automation of FRV’s critical response capability, saving valuable time in mobilising re ghters to emergency incidents.Sn e    EAS  u Ventia’s paging system solutionL- R Kristine Volkerts, Chris Janssen and Sunny Lai

14 15CLEVER DESIGN REHABILITATES MINECONNECT 21Our Environmental Services team successfully delivered a complex environmental remediation solution for Energy Resources Australia (ERA) at its Ranger Mine Project Area in the Northern Territory. Responsible for an essential early stage to the successful rehabilitation of the site, the team was tasked with the enhanced consolidation of more than 43 million tonnes of tailings submerged under ve metres of water in the former mine pit.The team’s unique solution was to install prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) or ‘wicks’ to provide a preferential ow path for water trapped within the tailings allowing the water to be expressed and the tailings to rapidly consolidate.Together with project partners, the innovative team designed, fabricated and constructed a modular pontoon system to provide a oating working platform. From here, over 41,000 prefabricated vertical drains (PVD’s or wick drains) were installed to depths of up to 40 metres into unconsolidated tailings.ERA’s Project Director Bernard Toakley said progressive rehabilitation has been taking place at the Ranger Project Area since 1996 and the latest works are another step in the rehabilitation process.“To nd a partner like Ventia with the unique combination of complex environmental remediation experience and also directional drilling capability, was enormously benecial for ERA and our ongoing rehabilitation activities of the Ranger Mine Area,” said Bernard. Ventia’s Environmental Services Project Manager, Jay Gaul said he was proud to be part of Ventia’s een-person team, working with more than 10 subcontracting companies to deliver the project around the clock. “It wasn’t without it challenges but we worked together to deliver the project for ERA over a continuous period of ve months spanning the challenging wet season without a single recordable injury. It was a great achievement,” Jay said. This team continues to receive recognition and recently won the Civil Contractors Federation NT Earth Awards for Excellence in Civil Construction in the $30m to $75m category. To nd a partner like Ventia with the unique combination of complex environmental remediation experience and also directional drilling capability, was enormously benecial for ERA and our ongoing rehabilitation activities of the Ranger Mine Area.Project Director Bernard Toakley, Energy Resources AustraliaL-R Alex Cockerton congratulates Jay Gaul and Stephen BourhillModular pontoon deployed on siteBespoke wicking bargeL  t w  оs n e  о WINNER: RANGER MINE REHABILITATION PROJECT TEAMJay Gaul, Stephen Bourhill, Allan Garland, Brendan McVa y, Danny David, Stephen McKeown, Andrew Hutchison, Rhegan Bond and P atrick Finlay

16 17TOWER DESIGN REIMAGINEDHIGHLY COMMENDED: AMPLITEL TOWER LIFE CYCLE TEAMKyle Dent, Peter Brouf and Josh KiddCONNECT 21With more than 8,000 physical towers, Amplitel is one of Australia’s leading providers of telecommunications infrastructure. Ventia’s Telco team partners with Amplitel, providing specialist skills refurbishing towers across the country. Ventia’s role involves team members in the eld identifying structural parts of the tower that need replacing, then measuring each part and feeding it into a spreadsheet for the draing team. Previously, the draing team would then manually draw each replacement piece using CAD soware. When hundreds of parts needing replacing, the draw-up was obviously very time intensive.During a recent refurbishment project, as the Ventia team was reviewing detailed drawings of individual tower parts, some major challenges were discovered. With an unwavering focus on excellence and getting the job done, the team – consisting of Kyle Dent, Peter Brou and Josh Kidd – pivoted and decided to do things dierently. Kyle is an automation specialist, while Peter and Josh specialise in structural draing and engineering. The team combined their diverse specialist skills and successfully developed a soware solution that transformed the traditional labour-intensive process of producing detailed drawings. This innovative soware not only streamlined the task but also signicantly enhanced its eiciency and precision. Now, the spreadsheet of replacement parts is fed into a piece of soware created by Kyle, and that soware does all the drawing – removing the need for manual CAD work. What used to take 10-15 minutes per part to draw, now takes a fraction of the time, with the new soware producing 30 part-drawings in only 3.5 minutes!“We looked at every idea and challenge through the lens of ‘Is it possible? Let’s nd out”, said Kyle. The new draing solution has been so successful it is now being rolled out to other Telecommunications contracts.Kyle DentTelecommunications tower at Dunsborough (WA)It was an outstanding collaboration. PASSION FOR SERVICE AND SUSTAINABILITYHIGHLY COMMENDED: JENNY GIGLIOTTIServing more than six million nutritious meals across the country every year, Ventia is passionate about consistently providing high-quality food with seasonal variation and nutritional well-being for Australian armed forces personnel. Our National Service Delivery Manager – Hospitality and Catering, Jenny Gigliotti, is a shining example of the passion and excellence that enables Ventia to provide such outstanding service.Throughout her career, Jenny has constantly led by example, delivering the highest standard of service in everything she does. She has also sought to improve and optimise operations wherever possible – one example being the introduction of the WasteMaster. To reduce our food waste impact, Jenny worked with the client, Green Eco Technologies, and Veolia, to facilitate the installation and successful operation of the WasteMaster in all Defence base kitchens. The Green Eco Technologies’ WasteMaster system uses unique technology to convert food waste, without bacteria, other additives, or water, into a virtually odour-free, much reduced quantity of reusable residual material, which is then thoughtfully disposed of by Veolia. Thanks to Jenny’s hard work and passion for sustainability, WasteMaster has reduced our overall volume of waste materials by up to 80%.Previously requiring daily truck movements, residual material is now collected fortnightly and used to expedite composting of other organic matter at a nearby facility.  t w Va     r t  r   Jenny Gigliotti2322 CONNECT 21Discussing the WasteMaster systemThe WasteMaster in action

26 27COMBATTING DRIVER FATIGUEWINNER: WELL SERVICING TEAM - ADHOC PROJECTSDane Mahaey, Christopher Worland, Jonathan Qu ire and Les IrwinCONNECT 21Fatigue is one of the leading contributing factors to driving related events and deaths across Australia and New Zealand. For many of our Rig & Well Services eld-based workforce who work long hours for an extended period in remote environments, this risk is even greater. To proactively manage the risk of fatigue-related incidents, Jonathan Qu ire led members of our Well Servicing Team, Les Irwin, Christopher Worland, and Dane Mahaey to manage the implementation of Guardian in vehicles driven by our people in isolated parts of South-West Queensland.Guardian is a driver fatigue detection system that complements Ventia’s in-vehicle monitoring system EROAD by continuously assessing the driver’s state to ensure they remain alert and capable of safely operating the vehicle. The cameras monitor the driver’s eyes and face as well as their head position and movements to detect signs of fatigue or drowsiness, such as frequent blinking, slow eye movement, yawning, drooping eyelids, frequent nodding, or a tilted head. When it identies that one of these events has occurred, it alerts the driver, either by audible alarms or vibrating their seat, and sends a recording of the event to the leadership team in town to review and provide support where required.“We worked alongside our Rig Managers to roll out the system to several well servicing rigs to ensure it would seamlessly integrate with current systems, and improve the safety of our crews,” said Jonathan.Due to its success in saving tired drivers, Guardian is now being rolled out in other parts of Ventia’s Rig & Well Services business. The cameras monitor the driver’s eyes and face as well as their head position and movements to detect signs of fatigue or drowsiness.L  t r R &   Our teams drive long distances in isolated parts of South-West Queensland.L-R Les Irwin, Jonathan Quire and Dane Mahaey with Kyle KoziolLes Irwin

28 29IMPROVING SUBCONTRACTOR SAFETYHIGHLY COMMENDED: JEREMY KIELYCONNECT 21Working with more than 15,000 subcontractors across Australia and New Zealand, it’s very important to have good relationships with our partners – something Jeremy Kiely prioritises every day, with a focus on safety. Ventia’s work relies on the engagement of specialist contractors. While contractors are a huge asset and enable us to full our wide-ranging services, there can also be signicant workplace health and safety and enterprise risks if inter-organisational relationships are not actively managed. It is vitally important that we openly engage with contractors to ensure alignment with our values and expectations, and a ‘one Ventia’ approach. As Workplace Health and Safety Manager on the Sydney Asset Performance (SRAP) Contract in our Transport sector, Jeremy has driven a signicantly improved safe working culture by enhancing subcontractor engagement – through upgraded compliance systems, applying rigorous safety protocols, and introducing innovative communication tools. His hands-on approach has resulted in notably reduced injury rates and an improved safety culture with our subcontractors.“The safety of our people – every single member of our workforce – is, and must always be, our number one priority,” said Jeremy. “It is important for us to establish this expectation right at the start of any contractor engagement, ensuring no ambiguity to our requirements. “Our team on the SRAP Contract operates by this principal daily, ensuring we meet our client objectives and expectations, our duty of care requirements to the public, and most importantly that anyone who comes to work for us returns home to their families each day in the same condition in which they came to work.”The safety of our people – every single member of our workforce – is, and must always be, our number one priority.Jeremy Kiely with our specialist subcontractorsJeremy Kiely r     о

30 31UPLIFTING SAFETY COMPLIANCE AND CULTUREHIGHLY COMMENDED: SONA JOHNCONNECT 21A genuine advocate for people and safety, Sona John is the SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) Manager on our Auckland Council contract. When she joined the contract a year ago, Sona set her sights on improving the contract’s safety performance. Through comprehensive training and a determination to change and unify the contract’s safety culture, Sona led by example, encouraging managers and supervisors to actively participate. This top-down approach helped the rest of the team see how important safety was being taken. Not only did she develop and run training and awareness sessions, and many other safety-related activities, Sona made it a priority to be very visible on every site. She undertook many site visits and safety interactions, and got to know each team member personally, building trust and rapport. The result is a workforce who now know Sona well and feel comfortable asking questions or reporting issues with her. All of this has combined to ensure SHEQ is a constant topic of discussion and top of mind for the team. “I am a people’s person and thoroughly enjoy working with my team,” said Sona.“This contract is very close to my heart, as our team works in very challenging environments and around the clock. I am truly passionate about ensuring that every one of us gets home safely at the end of our shi. “It is amazing to see the shi in culture, which is in turn making a dierence to all of our lives. This has been driven by our Senior Leadership Team, who never shy away from taking accountability and responsibility. “Our team is constantly looking out for continuous improvement and adopting better ways,” she said.“Together, we overcome every problem and challenge, and I am now more energised than ever to take on new challenges that will benet this great team and our wider Ventia family.” As a result of Sona’s unwavering eort, there has been a notable 69% reduction in the Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate on this contract.I am truly passionate about ensuring that every one of us gets home safely at the end of our shift.Sona JohnL-R Omid Bassam, Sona John and Matthew ScottL  t r     ה

34 35A LEGACY OF LOYALTYWINNER: KAY MATTHEWS-ELLERYCONNECT 21Aer 25 years at Ventia and our predecessor companies, Kay Matthews-Ellery has seen much change and evolution. One thing that hasn’t changed however, is Kay’s loyalty and dedication to her team, and, she says, the workplace culture of support and friendship, is vitally important at Ventia. Kay joined the former Transeld business in January 1999, as a Customer Services Oicer in Hamilton. Two years later she was promoted to Oicer Manager – the rst of many promotions and new roles, including Finance Administration Manager, SAP subject matter expert, and now Systems & Training Manager. Over the years, Kay has built an impressive knowledge bank for SAP, and has been instrumental in supporting other sectors across New Zealand. As Kay says: “Change is inevitable. Sometimes it is uncomfortable, but change brings with it greater opportunities, upgraded skills, and new friendships.” “I truly believe people are the heart of our business and supporting each other is a key part of #TeamVentia.“Many people have come and gone over the years, but the culture here – the support and comradeship, the feeling of ‘family’ – hasn’t changed,” she said.“I call my colleagues my Ventia family – we encourage each other, and we’re in it together in the good times and the bad.”While supporting our people is second nature to Kay, she demonstrated our values and great empathy in her support of the New Zealand team who suered the devastating loss of a friend and colleague at work last year.“The loss of our dear friend and colleague changed all of us, and will always be with us,” said Kay. “We wouldn’t have got through it without the support of each other.
