Welcome A message of welcome Dear Congress Delegate Welcome to Eastbourne and to Congress 2013 We hope you find the scientific programme informative and enlightening There will be an update on the European Directive 2010 63 EU which will be followed by an Ask the Inspector session This is your chance to ask the experts any burning questions you may have or if you are too shy to ask we have included a Question Sheet on page 35 for you to fill in and submit to a member of the Congress Committee As this year is a joint meeting with LAVA the theme of the conference is Techs and Vets together we can make a difference The IAT are delighted that LAVA members have joined us for Congress 2013 and we hope that this will be the first of many joint initiatives The Named Persons Workshop which takes place on the Tuesday prior to Congress will look at the relationship between the NACWO and NVS This theme will be further explored in the platform presentation by Linda Horan and Michael Wilkinson from the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow respectively After two false starts the IAT are pleased to confirm that in conjunction with the University of Middlesex the Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology Level 5 is accredited and being delivered It is hoped the full BSc in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology Level 6 will be available to be taught from academic year 2014 15 If you have any queries relating to the IAT qualification system there will be an Education Drop In Session on Thursday during the coffee break Some more details appear on page 22 and the IAT Administrator at the Congress Reception is also available to put you in touch with the relevant people The IAT AGM will take place on Tuesday 12th March at 18 00 hrs in the Gold Room and everyone is welcome to attend The IAT is run by and for its members so make sure that you come along and have a say in the future direction of your Institute The agenda for the AGM can be found on page 20 Despite the slight restriction in exhibition space this year we are still proud to be able to offer you a very full and varied Trade Exhibition Companies old and new are represented and we encourage everyone to make the most of this excellent opportunity to meet with exhibitors in a relaxed and informal environment outside the work place The Exhibitors have once again arranged a Trade Exhibition Quiz and details can be found on pages 8 and 96 Don t miss the Official Opening of the Trade Exhibition at 20 30 hrs on Tuesday evening Both the IAT and LAVA trust that you will find Congress 2013 to be an informative and enriching conference but if you have any suggestions or comments please contact a member of the Congress Committee either in person via the Congress Reception or by e mail congress iat org uk We wish you a very enjoyable joint Congress 2013 Institute of Animal Technology and Laboratory Animal Veterinary Association General Information 5

General Information AGM The 27th Annual General Meeting of the Institute of Animal Technology will be held in the Gold Room at 18 00 hrs on Tuesday A full Agenda appears on page 20 and attendance is open to ALL delegates LECTURES AND PAPERS The Platform Programme will be held in the Gold Room Please refer to pages 30 to 45 within the Scientific Programme section for all information on the Paper Presentations The Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture formerly known as the Special Guest Lecture will be given by Professor Chris West of Edinburgh Zoo The abstract for his paper entitled Life in Zoos and a profile on Chris can be found on page 45 Kevin Dolan 1926 2011 Following the sad passing of Kevin Dolan at the age of 85 the IAT Council wished to honour his memory by renaming the Special Guest Lecture at the annual IAT Congress the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture Despite joining the world of animal technology somewhat later in life than most Kevin gained his IAT Fellowship in 1977 at the same time as gaining a Diploma in Law His contributions to the IAT included services on Council and Journal Editor for several years standing down only on retirement from Cancer Research UK In recognition of service he was made a Honorary Member and later became a Vice President Further contributions to the industry included his books Introduction to Laboratory Law now in its second edition and Ethics Animals and Science as well as many contributions to other books and articles on the subject of law and ethics However it was as a teacher that Kevin had the most impact He taught on the Postgraduate Diploma MSc course the Medical Technology courses at City of Westminster and on Personal Licence Modular training courses As Kevin gave so much over the years to animal technologists a Memorial Lecture in his honour is a fitting tribute to him General Information 9

General Information PRIZES AND AWARDS The First Time Presenter Paper The annual Jack Mundy Prize has previously been awarded at Congress for the best paper given by a Junior Technologist but in 2004 the competition was opened up to include anyone who is making their debut presentation at Congress Three First Time presenters will participate this year starting at 12 25 hrs on Thursday and thanks to the continued sponsorship from B K Universal a division of Marshall BioResources a generous monetary gift of 150 00 will be awarded to the winner after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture on Thursday afternoon Arthur Edward Jack Mundy FIAT was thought of by his peers as the founder of the Animal Technicians Association ATA in 1950 During the early years as Honorary Secretary he worked very hard to make the Association work and raise the original membership of 200 By 1960 it had doubled to 400 members When the Laboratory Animal Centre LAC discontinued their support of an annual Congress it was Jack who petitioned for the ATA to take over and he organised the first one in Bangor with the help of his wife Mimi The following year it was held at the Royal Veterinary College where he worked as Chief Technician and there were two exhibitors When the organisation became too big for two people to manage the Congress Committee was formed On his retirement Jack was awarded Life Membership of the IAT Best Poster The award for Best Poster sponsored by Lillico will be presented after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture on Thursday afternoon A selection panel nominated by IAT Council judge according to the criteria of best content clarity and quality of science The prize itself is a generous cash award of 150 00 to the winner General Information 11

General Information Journal Article Marjorie Sandiford Whittingham Prize Animal Technology and Welfare Our congratulations go to Adnan Avdic Belltheus BSc PgDip whose winning paper was chosen by the Editorial Board on a clear majority to receive the 2012 Journal Article Prize for his paper Surgical derivation and care of germfree pigs published in Volume 11 No 2 August 2012 issue Adnan will be presented with a plaque at the Close of Congress on Thursday afternoon About the author Adnan graduated from James Cook University in Australia in Biology and received postgraduate education in Animal Biology at Plymouth University He started his career in animal technology at Huntingdon Life Sciences and moved from there to work as a surgical theatre technician with Michael Boyd at the Royal Veterinary College in London He works mainly as a junior anaesthetist at the forefront of in vivo science on projects such as in utero genetic manipulation uterine transplant germfree derivation and human tumour passage on a wide range of animal species Marjorie Sandiford Whittingham was a late arrival on Council in 1966 serving 11 years until she retired from work in the late 1970s For the 7 years prior to her retirement she was Secretary to the Institute and was also a Member of the Exam Board for all of those 11 years Marjorie s husband Dick Whittingham and Council set up the prize fund after her untimely death in Kenya where they had retired to The enormity of the amount of work that Marjorie completed during that period made her shorter service even more exceptional 12 General Information

General Information THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD The Andrew Blake Tribute Award commemorates the work and life of Andrew Blake who suffered from Friedrich s ataxia a hereditary condition described as one of the worst of neurological diseases Andrew died in May 2002 aged 39 Andrew was passionate about the need to support scientists in their work and his commitment to speaking out against animal rights activists took up much of the last ten years of his life He died shortly before he was to collect his MBE Sponsored this year by the IAT the Andrew Blake Tribute Award is given to the animal technologist judged to have made the most significant contribution to improving standards in laboratory animal welfare over the previous twelve months Winner 2013 ish Facility University College London F Body condition scoring for laboratory Zebrafish Carole Wilson Karen Dunford Carly Nichols Heather Callaway Jenna Hakkesteeg and Matthew Wicks Karen Dunford MA BA Hons with Distinction will present the paper on behalf of the Department on Wednesday at 11 30 hrs Representatives of the Fish Facility Department will receive an engraved glass plaque and a total cash award of 250 00 at the prize giving ceremony prior to the close of Congress on Thursday afternoon A full transcript of this paper appears in the April 2013 issue Vol 12 No 1 of Animal Technology and Welfare THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD SPONSORED BY INSTITUTE OF ANIMAL TECHNOLOGY General Information 13

General Information THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD About the authors Fish Facility UCL UCL have had a fish facility for the last 16 years since Nigel Holder was recruited as Head of Anatomy and Developmental Biology in 1997 Since Nigel s untimely death in 1998 Professor Stephen Wilson has been the academic lead of the fish facility Over the last 12 years the facility has been expanded 3 times and is currently holding approximately 50 000 fish of approximately 700 genetically distinct lines It is currently in the process of its next expansion taking its holding capacity to approximately 100 000 fish Carole Wilson joined the team in 2000 and is the Head of the Facility and Carly Nichols joined in 2010 as her deputy Jenna Hakkestegg joined in 2008 and is currently the stock centre manager Heather Callaway joined in 2011 initially as nursery technician and is currently acting deputy while Carly is on maternity leave Karen Dunford became a full time member of the team in 2012 after many years of working part time in the facility and is currently the nursery technician The latest recruit Matt Wicks joined in 2012 as the systems technician The facility team come from a wide range of backgrounds Carole spent almost 7 years as an animal technologist at NIMR gaining both an HNC in Animal Technology as well as her MIAT before undertaking a degree in Molecular Genetics at Sussex Carly has a degree in Zoology from UCL and a background in agriculture working at Writtle College before working at both Queen Mary s and King s College University fish facilities before joining us at UCL Heather has a degree in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University and worked at both the Human Genome Mapping Project Hinxton as well as Queen Mary s University fish facility before arriving at UCL Jenna heralds from South Africa and has a degree in Entomology and Microbiology from Rhodes University South Africa Karen has an MA in Archaeology from UCL as well as a first degree in Classical Archaeology from the University of Toronto in Canada her home country Matt as the youngest member of the team has come from Sparsholt College where he received a National Diploma in Fisheries Management Both Matt and Karen are currently studying for IAT qualifications Outside of work hours the facility team have a variety of interests Matt has a very keen personal interest in fish after his father took him fishing as a young child Both Heather and Carole are qualified divers and Heather both organises and sings in a choir Karen has many interests and is currently learning Ancient Greek Jenna enjoys swimming and travelling Carly has her hands full as a new mum but is also an excellent mural artist and one of the founder members of the British Association of Zebrafish Husbandry BAZH along with Carole Left to right Karen Dunford Carole Wilson Matthew Wicks Heather Callaway and Jenna Hakkesteeg Carly Nichols is currently on maternity leave and therefore not included 14 General Information

General Information AAALAC International Fellowship Award Gene M Rukavina 2013 USA Recipient We welcome Gene M Rukavina the 2013 USA Recipient to Congress 2013 Gene Rukavina RVT RLATG is the 2013 USA recipient of the AAALAC International Fellowship Award Gene is the Training Coordinator at the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine UCLA Los Angeles where he is responsible for instructing users in various wet labs and biocontainment barrier walkthroughs Gene has been involved at a National level of AALAS leadership serving on various committees and on the Board of Trustees representing District 8 Since beginning his Laboratory Animal Science career in 2000 Gene has been widely published and given many presentations on public outreach training and enrichment He was recently selected by Americans for Medical Progress to be their Michael D Hayre Fellow specialising in Social Media which speaks to his passion around technology He describes himself as a coordinator trainer technician webmaster editor trustee speaker biomedical research advocate social media maven world traveller avid foodie and all round good egg who is passionate about making a difference Gene will be presented with his award at the prize giving ceremony on Thursday afternoon General Information 15

General Information AAALAC International Fellowship Award Martin Heath 2012 UK Recipient Martin Heath MSc FIAT FIScT RAnTech PTLLS won the coveted 2012 UK award Martin is the Director of Learning Curve Development Ltd a company specialising in training and continued personal development for scientists animal technologists and support staff Despite being holed up in his hotel for almost a week thanks to Hurricane Sandy s arrival coinciding with his he was able to attend the AALAS annual meeting last November in Minneapolis to be presented with his Fellowship His company s accredited training courses include Named Animal Care Welfare Officer course Home Office Modules 1 3 and he lectures on both the Institute of Animal Technology level 2 and 3 courses Martin previously served as the Deputy Training Manager for GlaxoSmithKline where he was responsible for all Biosciences Support Department technical training and personal development He holds a MSc in Laboratory Animal Technology and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Animal Technology and the Institute of Science Technology Congratulations Martin Details on applying for the 2013 UK Award can be found on page 25 16 General Information

Platform Programme THURSDAY 14th MARCH 12 40 Maintaining fish health at UCL Matthew Wicks Fish Facilities Division of Biosciences University College London Gower Street London WC1E 6BT Zebrafish are becoming increasingly important to many research scientists today for a number of different reasons one of them being its high level of tolerance against stress and change in its environment That said it is important from a welfare perspective to maintain husbandry standards at a level where stress levels are either eliminated or kept as low as possible In this presentation I will be concentrating on the importance of monitoring and maintaining water quality aspects of life support systems and biosecurity that contribute to health maintenance and the methods of doing this we employ at UCL These methods help promote a healthy environment for the fish to live in and prevent the outbreak of diseases that fish can become prone to when stressed Although there are many different kinds of systems that are used to house large quantities of Zebrafish they are all fitted with some form of life support system to prevent the water deteriorating below optimal levels The presentation will include examples of the main types of life support systems used in Zebrafish facilities and how maintenance of these are critical to health I will also explain the importance of biosecurity with examples showing methods to prevent the introduction and spread of disease around a facility 13 00 The routine care and husbandry of the motor neurone disease mouse model Clare Sims BSc Hons Bristol University Dorothy Hodgkin Building Whitson Street Bristol BS1 3NY Motor Neurone Disease or MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which affects two in every100 000 people in the UK every year The disease attacks the motor neurones of the human body which are specialised nerve cells responsible for movement and the body s autonomic processes The most common form of the disease is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS and following diagnosis life expectancy is usually only three to five years During this time the individual will experience loss of limb movement muscle wastage and difficulty eating breathing and speaking The mouse model used was created at the Jackson Laboratory to express MND like symptoms During the study three different gene based treatments are tested which are designed to prolong life expectancy At around 90 days old the mice will start to express the degenerative characteristics associated with the disease and are put through behavioural tests and weighed regularly to assess their motor functions and condition At around 100 days old the mice start to lose weight and a new cage set up is adopted They are provided with a long spout mashed food food inside the cage and extra bedding material all to enable them to function as they slowly deteriorate The Home Office licence outlines two morbidity tests which determine when the mice should leave the study This paper will not finish until 13 15 hrs 13 00 LUNCH Scientific Programme 43

KEVIN DOLAN MEMORIAL LECTURE formerly known as the Special Guest Lecture LIFE IN ZOOS Professor Chris West BVet Med CLAS MRCVS Spending time as a veterinary surgeon involved in the field of biomedical research and teaching was an interesting preparation for moving into the world of zoos and the global conservation of endangered species Zoos are populated by a cast of engaging and eccentric characters and not just the animals There are many examples of drama humour and sadness to share and adventures in far flung places to relive Behind the visitor attraction fa ade modern zoos have a powerful conversation and education mission and this is the primary motivation for zoo biologists We live in a world that is crowded warming and damaged and whilst we can apply science and technology to the breeding and dwindling populations in zoos as refugee camps the ultimate solution is via people s hearts and minds My talk will interleave some stories about zoo adventures and encounters in the wild with serious thoughts about humanity s relationship with other species and the planet we all share Biography Chris West is currently CEO of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland RZSS Chris is a vet by original training a zoologist by interest and a conservationist by vocation He has spent time in academia the corporate world and in conservation zoos He has even spent time in army uniform but as a veterinary specialist and so far behind any real front line experience Having been Zoological Director at London Zoo Chris spent 6 years in South Australia managing 3 sites and many programmes of fieldwork and research as a Zoo Director and Professor of Zoology at Adelaide University Wineries sunshine and amazing wildlife notwithstanding the allure of joining the RZSS at Edinburgh Zoo led to Chris returning to the northern hemisphere recently As well as being a prestigious zoo conservation charity the RZSS is located in a city with great depths of culture thinking and a proud heritage It is truly exciting to consider what new approaches to community education and local conservation can be developed and what new partnerships there are to explore As a Welsh born part Australian citizen Chris is finding Scotland an energising place to be and has taken to spending time in the Cairngorms at the RZSS site at the Highland Wildlife Park whenever he can The pandas are pretty amazing too Scientific Programme 45

Poster Presentations POSTERS Chair Patrick Hayes FIAT RAnTech DipBA Life Member and Immediate Past Editor of Animal Technology and Welfare The Tumours Models Core a new initiative at CRUK Cambridge Paul Mackin Tumour Models Core Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute Li Ka Shing Centre Robinson Way Cambridge CB2 0RE The Tumour Models Core TMC is a new initiative recently developed within the Biological Resources Unit at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute CRI This small facility comprises 2 ex Tuveson laboratory members Production Manager and Study Manager plus a dedicated senior animal technologist NACWO with continual support from a dedicated team of animal technologists with extensive experience with the Kras R172H p53 PDX Cre KPC model The Core has developed their own system for anticipating user requirements processing user requests and cross charging for mice supplied and services rendered The new Core will continue the efforts of pancreatic cancer research by providing a central supply of experimental and control mice KPC mice In the future the TMC hope to use the same principles applied to facilitate and expand the KPC model to adopt alternative tumour models within the CRI Services provided by the TMC may lend themselves to future mouse cancer models such as breast prostate lung and kidney cancer Webcams as a tool to aid communications diagnosis and treatment Darren Egan MRC Ares Building Babraham Research Campus Cambridge CB22 3AT The Laboratory of Molecular Biology LMB in Cambridge is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology with its own dedicated transgenic rodent breeding facility Ares situated 5 miles away on a satellite campus The geographical distance and quarantine restrictions between sites have presented their own problems most noticeably when Ares staff seek guidance from Medical Research Council MRC scientists regarding unusual behaviour or phenotypes Similar issues affect the Biological Services Group within Ares as there are also staff movement quarantine restrictions in operation within the facility This can impact on a Named Person s ability to examine the animals first hand and add vital minutes to providing crucial advice on sick or injured animals Consequently as a solution Ares has set up webcams in each animal room In conjunction with a telephone and access to the LMB IT network animals can be viewed in real time with advice and diagnosis given via commentary despite constraints of distance or quarantine restriction Scientific Programme 47

Poster Presentations Welfare for wobbly mice Helen Cooper MRC Ares Building Babraham Research Campus Cambridge CB22 3AT The Medical Research Council MRC Ares animal facility houses mouse models of human diseases such as Dementia and Parkinson s The P301S T43 line is a transgenic mouse model whereby homozygous animals at 4 6 months of age develop a neurological phenotype including severe partial paralysis of the lower limbs At Ares a traffic light system of green amber and red has been developed to identify the progressing stages of the phenotype This allows for close monitoring provision of necessary care and the definition of humane end points Modifying the environmental conditions to suit the phenotype vastly improves the welfare of these mice This poster describes these environmental refinements Webcams are an invaluable tool for remote assessment of these wobbly mice and allows the Laboratory of Molecular Biology LMB scientists to confirm that the appropriate required phenotypic stage has been reached The mice are then either used in behavioural studies or sent back to the LMB for analysis The suitability of a fish stand alone system to house Xenopus tropicalis Nick Harman Sanger Institute Genome Campus Hinxton Cambridge CB10 1SA Adaptability of tanking systems creates issues when housing requirements adjust to meet the needs of an Institute s research Making space versatile to suit different species can often seem at odds due to interspecies size difference social grouping and breeding needs Here we present such an adaptation to a standalone tanking system designed for Zebrafish and adjusted to cater for the needs of Xenopus tropicalis frogs The system needed to provide for the daily needs of the frogs without impairing their growth rates but still providing a good level of environmental enrichment Here we present our investigation and findings that have ultimately allowed us to adopt this system and provide the flexibility we sought The chicken as a research animal Lejla Bektic Link ping University IFM Biology 58183 Link ping Sweden This poster presents the chicken Gallus gallus as a research animal in genetics and animal behaviour and describes its life in a laboratory environment specifically focusing on the situation at Link ping University Sweden The poster gives insight in breeding done either naturally or artificially the egg collection and storing process and the equipment used for storage and incubation of eggs and hatching routines Common behavioural problems such as stereotypies and feather pecking are described along with how we strive to minimise these with the environmental enrichment Additionally our daily routines and husbandry practices are presented as well as how we adapted commercially available housing systems and routines to our needs Finally the poster also illustrates the differences between Red Junglefowl the wild ancestor White Leghorn an egg laying breed Broiler a breed used for meat production and crossbred animals 48 Scientific Programme

Poster Presentations Maximising operational and research activities through the use of disposable caging Rebecca Varrall Pfizer Cambridgepark Drive Cambridge MA 02140 USA In 2005 a novel approach for rodent housing was introduced in the form of the disposable cage The use of disposable caging maximises research space through a reduction in washroom and storage footprint and lowers capital and operating costs Polyethylene terephthalate PET BPA free recyclable cages are supplied ready for use pre bedded irradiated and with pre filled water bottles to minimise cage change and processing time simplifying operational workflows Cages are also lighter than most reusable systems resulting in fewer personnel ergonomic issues At Pfizer a disposable cage has been selected as the primary individually ventilated caging IVC option for a new 52 000ft2 research facility with a 7 500 rodent housing capacity Pfizer is not alone since its first introduction to market an increasing number of research establishments worldwide have transitioned to using this caging system or included it in future vivarium planning This poster describes our experiences using disposable cages Animal care welfare and dosing oral gavage of pre weaned dogs Jamie Lemmon Huntingdon Life Sciences Woolley Road Alconbury Huntingdon Cambridgeshire PE28 4HS Historically drugs have often been used off label for treating children meaning there has been no test data in juvenile animals or young humans Now new drugs must be tested in juvenile animals before being prescribed for treating children Recent guidance indicates a single species is usually sufficient and the rat is most commonly used because of its traditional use in post natal studies and the availability of background data for the age s and end time points to be tested Studies in juvenile non rodents can however be required when scientifically justified This is likely when concerns have been raised by existing studies that need to be investigated in a second species in many cases the non rodent of choice is the dog This poster describes our experiences in developing and validating the animal care welfare and technical procedures necessary to perform this essential work in juvenile beagles to assess the safety of a central nervous system drug used to treat children under the age of two for a life threatening condition Scientific Programme 49

Poster Displays Improving animal welfare by providing extra environmental enrichment with playtime Natalie Edwards Penomics West Forvie Forvie Site Robinson Way Cambridge CB2 0SZ By providing rats with playpen time for extra environmental enrichment it improves their welfare standards Over time we have adapted the playpen by using different materials and currently plastic balls are being provided as they have proved to be the best playpen filling and can be cleaned between uses We have used the playpen to rehouse singularly housed males together without any aggression and stimulate those in long term holding cages This is a major advantage as rats are social animals Observations were carried out and the rats appeared very stimulated when in the playpen and displayed more natural behaviour such as exploring new areas climbing hiding etc Overall the rats seemed much happier when exposed to playpen time compared to rats that did not receive any playtime Creation of a complex environment for New Zealand White rabbits within the confines of an animal unit Ashley Grimmer Penomics West Forvie Forvie Site Robinson Way Cambridge CB2 0SZ Our aim in the creation of a complex environment for New Zealand White rabbits was to see if we could improve their standards of welfare We achieved this by increasing the level of enrichment they received by starting a toy rota and stimulated them more socially and environmentally with time in a playpen We found the rabbits to be more playful easier to handle and manipulate when necessary for certain tasks like health checking We also found the playpen encouraged more natural behaviours such as jumping running and standing on hind limbs and therefore produced a better research model The changing face of flexible film isolators Mark Harrison MRC Harwell Mary Lyon Centre Quarantine Suite Didcot Oxfordshire OX11 0RD The Mary Lyon Centre s quarantine MLC Q suite supports a large programme specialising in cleansing mouse stocks before they are transferred to the SPF barrier facility In this capacity the MLC Q operates high and low health status flexible film and semi rigid walled isolators Since 2004 there have been numerous design changes to the isolators from the initial set up to improve the running and efficiency of the MLC Q and also improve the biosecurity for the mice This poster goes through some of the modifications that have been implemented to flexible film isolators and some of the on going modifications 50 Scientific Programme

Poster Displays New insights into breeding and maintaining mouse stocks Jackie Harrison MRC Harwell Mary Lyon Centre Science and Innovation Campus Didcot Oxfordshire OX11 0RD Mouse husbandry and care has undergone a revolution in the last decade or so with the widespread introduction of individually ventilated cages and improvements to enrichment and cleaning regimes Much of the available breeding data and guidelines for colony management are based upon data collected in the different environment of a conventional animal facility with open top cages With the increased use of different strains of mice especially in the number of genetically modified strains it is now necessary to start re evaluating and challenging long held rules on mouse breeding It is unlikely that with the variety and diversity of strains one convention will satisfy all mouse colonies In this poster I will present real examples of where the old animal house tales are still applicable today and cases where they are not Unsurprisingly as genetic science has become more complex our role in caring for and breeding genetically altered mice has also become more difficult However I hope to persuade you that by careful databased decision making we are rising to this challenge The fantastic journey as an apprentice Jack Armes GlaxoSmithKline Park Road Ware Hertfordshire SG12 0DP Apprenticeships offer a broad variety of opportunities to enable students to work as well as learn on the job and acquire formal qualifications We are being trained by skilled professionals who have developed and honed their skills throughout their careers During our time we have been working towards a Level 3 BTEC in general sciences at college as well as learning invaluable life skills Last year we gained our Home Office Licence modules 1 2 and 3 at the Royal Veterinary College in London which was educational and enjoyable We have first hand experience working with different species of animal mainly rodents and dogs and are undergoing training in Home Office regulated procedures as well as animal husbandry This has given us the ability not only to conduct this work in a professional and empathetic manner but also use our 3Rs experience to challenge protocols of work We have developed greatly over the past two years starting as naive students we have thoroughly enjoyed our time as apprentices it has been a life changing experience that we would encourage other students to take part in Scientific Programme 51

Poster Displays Single handed jugular bleeding in conscious rats Kate Heath GlaxoSmithKline Park Road Ware Hertfordshire SG12 0DP Animal studies are required during the safety testing of potential new medicines to check the amount of the compound that gets into the body and correlate it with any side effects observed The concentration in the blood is assessed at various time points after dosing Historically these were obtained post dose via caudal puncture after whole body warming for approximately 10 minutes in a whole body warming cabinet set at 39oC We were asked to identify a refined method of collecting blood immediately post dose from animals that had been given compounds via either inhalation or the intravenous infusion route This poster explains how we achieved our goal and how this was expanded for other toxicological studies All animal studies were ethically reviewed and carried out in accordance with Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and the GSK Policy on the Care Welfare and Treatment of Animals Development of bronchoalveolar lavage BAL procedure in the beagle dog Rob Bester GlaxoSmithKline Park Road Ware Hertfordshire SG12 0DP Dog bronchoalveolar lavage BAL is a clinical technique which removes cell samples from the lungs These cells can then be used to investigate the potential of ex vivo alveolar macrophage models to predict in vivo alveolar macrophage toxicity The current in house method to obtain cells is carried out under a terminal anaesthesia We wanted to develop a dog BAL procedure using recovery anaesthesia that had minimal consequences to the animal but allowed us to achieve an in life sample There were 3 aims for this project l develop our team of technologists to be competent to perform the procedure in dogs allowing the dogs to recover from the anaesthesia l provide the BAL wash to our Cellular Pathology and Toxicology group to assess the cellular content of the BAL to better understand the milieu of the lower respiratory tract of the dog which could then serve as a basis for the study of possible pathological alterations l assess the effects of BAL sampling on the lungs and animal following a single BAL procedure and following a repeat BAL procedure This poster gives an overview of the BAL procedure and how we met our aims It discusses where we made refinements and how the results will benefit future study designs for inhaled drug development All animal studies were ethically reviewed and carried out in accordance with Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and the GSK Policy on the Care Welfare and Treatment of Animals 52 Scientific Programme

Poster Displays Determination of recovery period after intra abdominal transmitter and Electroencephalography EEG electrode placement in common marmosets Callithrix jacchus Leo van Geest BPRC Biomedical Primate Research Centre Langekleiweg 161 2288 GJ Rijswijk ZuidHolland The Netherlands In this study the recovery period of surgical placement of intra abdominal transmitters and EEG electrodes in common marmosets Callithrix jacchus was determined In order to test whether the insertion of an intra abdominal transmitter and EEG electrodes causes physical discomfort two tests which are being used to quantify motor deficits in Parkinson research were used hourglass test and tower test Additionally bodyweight and behaviour were monitored daily until 49 days post surgery During the entire study period the transmitters functioned properly and no additional surgery was needed Transmitter insertion caused a significant increase in righting time in the hourglass test compared to baseline values Recovery to mean values was observed within 7 days post surgery For the tower test the total amount of level changes declined by 80 directly after surgery Recovery was seen after day 8 since the period after day 8 did not show significant difference compared to baseline values Until day 15 a significant decline in bodyweight is seen Subsequently an increase in bodyweight occurs causing bodyweight to be recovered to baseline values in 31 days after surgery on average However behaviour does not seem to be influenced at all Evaluation of the effects of dosing and animal husbandry on heart rate blood pressure and activity in cardiovascular telemetry rats Jonathan Papworth Eisai Ltd Mosquito Way Hatfield Hertfordshire AL10 9SN Rat cardiovascular telemetry is used to establish the effects novel compounds have on the heart rate and blood pressure of conscious free moving animals in their home cages In cardiovascular telemetry animals there are large changes in heart rate blood pressure and activity associated with the light dark cycle However less is described of the effect that oral dosing and normal animal husbandry has on these cardiovascular parameters In these studies we have evaluated the effect that dosing and animal husbandry from entering the room to cleaning out and weighing of the animals has on these cardiovascular parameters It was found that even placing the animals onto the telemetry pads without removing the animals from their home cage led to an increase in activity heart rate and blood pressure which took in excess of two hours to return to normal resting levels Dosing and all the animal husbandry tasks assessed led to an increase in activity heart rate and blood pressure The extent of these effects varied from a technologist entering the room which only had a transient effect up to oral dosing of the animals which lead to a 2 hour increase in all the parameters evaluated The results described here indicate the importance of good study design and minimising the disturbance of telemetry animals on trial Consideration of these effects should enable refinements in study design with a reduction in variability and the number of animals required for each study Scientific Programme 53

Workshop Sessions James Bussell James Bussell is the Head of the Research Support Facility at the WT Sanger Institute With a background of over 20 years in animal technology genetics GA rodent production breeding and archiving he is a keen advocate of animal welfare in research He joined the Sanger Institute in 2007 and worked as part of the Sanger s programmes of research supplying the core support including breeding and procedural input that helps in the production of over 200 de novo mouse models mouse models per year and major other resources such as the Zebrafish Mutation project Mary Ann Haskings Mary Ann Haskings has worked for Cancer Research UK since 1990 initially as an animal technician working with rodents and rabbits before moving into transgenic technology She is deputy Head of the CRUK LRI Transgenic Service She holds the MIAT and higher BTEC in animal technology a degree in Molecular Biology and is currently studying for an MSc in Science and Society Mary Ann is particularly interested in animal welfare within the transgenic field She is a NACWO and has chaired the CRUK NACWO forum She has been an active member of the CRUK LRI ethics committee and has presented at animal welfare meetings Amanda Pickard Dr Amanda Pickard manages the import and export of mutant mouse strains by the Medical Research Council s Frozen Embryo and Sperm Archive FESA www har mrc ac uk services fesa Based at the MRC s Harwell site FESA is one of the largest repositories of mouse germplasm in the world and part of the Biological Resources Group which generates novel mutants for phenotyping and distribution to the scientific community As well as archiving the mutants generated by the high throughput targeted genetics programmes such as EUCOMM and IMPC FESA provides an archiving and distribution service to all scientists and academics protecting valuable mouse strains against breeding failure catastrophic losses genetic drift and genetic contamination Publicly available mouse strains are distributed via the online catalogue Mousebook www mousebook org and via the European Mouse Mutant Archive www emmanet org for which FESA is a founding partner Amanda was awarded a BSc Hons in Animal Physiology from the University of Nottingham and obtained her PhD from the University of Aberdeen Before taking up her post at MRC Harwell she worked as a Post doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Zoology London developing reproductive technologies for the conservation of endangered species Caroline Chadwick Dr Caroline Chadwick was appointed Director of Biomedical Services at the University of Birmingham in 2006 The facility houses rodents and Zebrafish for a large academic research community Prior to moving to Birmingham she was at the Cancer Research UK Paterson Institute in Manchester Scientific Programme 59

Workshop Sessions Please refer to the Table on page 54 for timings and the venue 2 hours CPD credit Workshop 5 Theory and practice of aseptic technique for rodent surgery Presented by Lucy Whitfield MA VetB DLAS MRCVS Named Veterinary Surgeon The Royal Veterinary College Royal College Street London NW1 0TU Adequate aseptic technique is one of the most fundamental and essential principles of infection control Aseptic technique refers to specific practices that reduce the risk of post surgical infections by decreasing the likelihood that microorganisms will invade the patient s body during surgical procedures The workshop will cover those practices performed immediately before and during a surgical procedure to reduce post operative infection Topics include l theoretical background l preparation of sterile equipment l preparation of the surgeon and the patient l maintaining a sterile field Lucy Whitfield After four years in general veterinary practice Dr Lucy Whitfield joined the technical services team of an animal health company which opened up an insight into the fascinating world of laboratory animal science She made the move to full time Named Veterinary Surgeon work soon afterwards and is still hooked and still learning Director of NVS services at the Royal Veterinary College since 2004 Lucy splits her work between clinical visits to the research clients and teaching at the College Lucy holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons RCVS Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and is an examiner for the RCVS the RVC s Animal Welfare MSc course and previously the Institute of Animal Technology s Membership Board Enthusiastic to contribute to this interesting veterinary field Lucy is a past president of LAVA and current member of LASA s Ethics Training and Education committee which has recently published guidance on surgical practice and Ethical Review Process function 60 Scientific Programme
