Welcome A message of welcome from the Congress Committee Dear Congress Delegate Welcome to the East of England and Congress 2012 We are looking forward to another successful Congress with a packed programme including an update from the Head of the Animals in Science Regulation Unit The theme of Congress this year is Animal Technology the Heart of Research There will be a wide range of paper presentations posters and workshops all focusing on animal technology and its vital role in research Once again this year we are running an Advanced NACWO Workshop prior to Congress which will focus on the European Directive 2010 63 EU This will continue to be a theme throughout 2012 It is hoped that once the new guidelines for the Directive are announced workshops will be offered by the IAT to bring NACWOs up to speed on the changes and how to implement them within their establishments Full details of these workshops will be on the IAT website and published in the Bulletin in due course We are also delighted to announce that following much lobbying and hard work by the IAT the University of Manchester will now be offering a BSc in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology with the first intake of students in September 2012 Further information appears on Pages 22 23 and 34 The annual AGM will take place at Congress 2012 It will be held on Tuesday 27th March at 18 00 hrs in the ATLAS Theatre This is your chance to come along and be involved in the running of your Institute The agenda for the AGM can be found on Page 18 The IAT Annual Congress is renowned for its Trade Exhibition and 2012 will be no exception As in previous years floor space was sold out early in the year which is very encouraging as this is one of the largest floor areas we have had for some time Congress attracts new companies every year to exhibit with the time honoured companies who have been supporting our Institute and meetings for many years Please make the most of this opportunity to meet them in a more relaxed and informal environment than the workplace and find out what they have to offer By popular demand they will be repeating the Trade Quiz and as entry requirements have been broadened this year all delegates are encouraged to participate The Quiz Questions can be found at the back of this handbook and the Answer Sheet to complete is available at the Congress Reception Desk Further details appear on Page 8 We know that you will find Congress 2012 informative and enlightening but should you have any queries concerns or suggestions then please contact a member of the Congress Committee either in person via the Congress Reception Desk or via e mail congress iat org uk Wishing you an enjoyable Congress The IAT Congress Committee General Information 5

General Information Kevin Dolan 1926 2011 Following the sad passing of Kevin Dolan in July 2011 the IAT Council wished to honour his memory in some way It was agreed that the Special Guest Lecture at the annual IAT Congress would be renamed until further notice as the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture Despite joining the world of animal technology somewhat later in life than most the impact Kevin had on the industry was outstanding He joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund now Cancer Research UK laboratories at Mill Hill in 1970 moved to the new Clare Hall premises when they opened in the mid 1980s initially as a cage washing attendant but rapidly moved through the ranks to become a Senior Animal Technologist Kevin gained his IAT Fellowship in 1977 at the same time as gaining a Diploma in Law to add to his theological qualifications Even though retired in 1987 Kevin continued his association with CRUK and was a member of their Ethical Review Committee until approximately 2009 His contributions to the IAT included service on IAT Council and Journal Editor for several years standing down only on retirement from CRUK In recognition of his service Kevin was made an Honorary Member of the Institute Kevin later became a Vice President of the Institute staying until his 80th birthday when he decided to make way in favour of someone younger Further contributions to the Industry included his books Introduction to Laboratory Animal Law now in its second edition and Ethics Animals and Science as well as many contributions to other books and articles on the subjects of Law and Ethics However it was as a teacher that Kevin had the most impact Initially Kevin began teaching Religious Studies and Maths at the Working Men s College at Mornington Crescent in London From the Working Men s College WMC he went on to support the IAT courses initially at Barnet College and then in 1994 the City of Westminster College Here Kevin taught on the Postgraduate Diploma MSc course having a few years before helped Steve Barnett put together the syllabus for the ethics and law sections Latterly Kevin taught on Medical Technology courses at City of Westminster extending his influence amongst others to Ophthalmologists Paramedics and Cardiothoracic technicians and was still teaching until the end of 2010 when he had decided that he would retire for a third time In addition to his College teaching commitments Kevin was also teaching for much of the time on Personal Licence Modular training courses having started working for Bioscientific Events when it was formed in 1990 The IAT Council felt that as Kevin had given so much over the years to animal technologists it would be a fitting tribute to have a Memorial Lecture in his honour at the annual Congress This year Professor Paul Flecknell will deliver the inaugural Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture to bring Congress 2012 to a close on Thursday afternoon General Information 9

General Information PRIZES AND AWARDS The First Time Presenter Paper Historically the annual Jack Mundy Prize has previously been awarded at Congress for the best paper given by a Junior Technician but in 2004 the competition was opened up to include anyone who has not formally given a presentation before at a conference Three First Time presenters will participate this year starting at 11 35 hrs on Wednesday and thanks to B K Marshall s sponsorship a generous monetary gift will be awarded to the winner after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture on Thursday afternoon Arthur Edward Jack Mundy FIAT was thought of by his peers as the founder of the Animal Technicians Association ATA in 1950 During the early years as Honorary Secretary he worked very hard to make the Association work and raise the original membership of 200 By 1960 it had doubled to 400 members When the Laboratory Animal Centre LAC discontinued their support of an annual Congress it was Jack who petitioned for the ATA to take over and he organised the first one in Bangor with the help of his wife Mimi The following year it was held at the Royal Veterinary College where he worked as Chief Technician and there were two exhibitors When the organisation became too big for two people to manage the Congress Committee was formed On his retirement Jack was awarded Life Membership of the IAT Best Poster The award for Best Poster will be presented after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture on Thursday afternoon and we are delighted that Lillico are continuing to sponsor this A selection panel nominated by IAT Council judge according to the criteria of best content clarity and quality of presentation The winner receives a cash prize which will be presented after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture on Thursday afternoon General Information 11

General Information Journal Article Marjorie Sandiford Whittingham Prize Animal Technology and Welfare Congratulations to Mikaella Bennie Christopher Loaring and Steven Trim authors of the winning 2011 Journal Article Prize for the paper Laboratory husbandry of arboreal tarantulas Theraphosidae and evaluation of environmental enrichment published in ATW Volume 10 No 3 December 2011 They are also taking an active part in Congress 2012 and it is double congratulations to all three of them as they have also won the Andrew Blake Tribute Award this year Mikaella will therefore present the paper on Wednesday morning after Christopher has given his First Time Presentation Steven is a Poster Presenter on Thursday afternoon About the co authors Chris Loaring Surrounded by hundreds of spiders and snakes every day would make most people balk at the idea but it is day to day work for animal technologists like Chris Loaring at Venomtech the UK s only commercial venom lab Chris has always been fascinated by all creatures great and small and as a child kept lizards When he moved to Canterbury to study History at the University of Kent his collection expanded to include monitor lizards venomous invertebrates crocodilians exotic mammals and snakes From 2008 Chris began focusing on venomous species and their safe handling and responsible maintenance with an ambition to one day work with them professionally This ambition was fulfilled upon him joining Venomtech in August 2011 Foregoing looking for crawly things under rocks and instead working with them in the laboratory Chris brought his experience working with some of the world s deadliest animals and a keen interest in science together to maintain a safe ethical and efficient animal unit His first time presentation paper at 12 15 hrs on Wednesday is entitled Refining laboratory husbandry of dangerous snakes of the family Elapidae Steve Trim Ten years in the pharmaceutical industry with Pfizer led Steve from molecular biology to pharmacology anatomy biochemistry and biological safety as well as managing drug discovery projects with in vivo studies alongside in vitro tarantula venom work After being made redundant in Feb 2010 Steve swiftly joined Venomtech in March 2010 putting together the experience gained in pharmaceutical drug discovery with an interest in keeping snakes and tarantulas as pets Venomtech s mission is to provide venoms for biological drug discovery previously difficult to obtain in the UK and Venomtech now holds over 50 species of venomous snake and over 100 invertebrate species One of the big challenges of providing venom is working with venomous animals where there are very few safe standard working practices and little known about the majority of the species in the scientific community Therefore another one of Venomtech s key missions is to develop safe working practices with these animals and research their needs in the laboratory environment wherever possible Steve will present his poster Dangerous animals and avoiding disaster on Thursday afternoon in Room Zest 1 Marjorie Sandiford Whittingham was a late arrival on Council in 1966 serving 11 years until she retired from work in the late 1970s For the 7 years prior to her retirement she was Secretary to the Institute and was also a Member of the Exam Board for all of those 11 years Marjorie s husband Dick Whittingham and Council set up the prize fund after her untimely death in Kenya where they had retired to The enormity of the amount of work that Marjorie completed during that period made her shorter service even more exceptional 12 General Information

General Information THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD The Andrew Blake Tribute Award commemorates the work and life of Andrew Blake who suffered from Friedrich s ataxia a hereditary condition described as one of the worst of neurological diseases Andrew died in May 2002 aged 39 Andrew was passionate about the need to support scientists in their work and his commitment to speaking out against animal rights activists took up much of the last ten years of his life He died shortly before he was to collect his MBE Sponsored by AstraZeneca the Andrew Blake Tribute Award is given to the animal technologist judged to have made the most significant contribution to improving standards in laboratory animal welfare over the previous twelve months Winner 2012 aboratory Husbandry of Arboreal Tarantulas L Theraphosidae and Evaluation of Environmental Enrichment Mikaella Bennie Christopher Loaring and Steven Trim Mikaella will give this paper on Wednesday at 12 35 hrs and afterwards will be presented with an engraved glass plaque and cash award of 250 00 to share with her co authors Chris and Steve A full transcript of this paper was published in the December 2011 issue of Animal Technology and Welfare THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD SPONSORED BY ASTRAZENECA General Information 13

General Information THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD About the principal author Mikaella Bennie With an inherent love of the type of creatures that make most people s blood run cold Mikaella Bennie works in a most unusual field she is an animal technologist for the UK s only commercial venom production facility Venomtech Ltd Responsible for over 100 species of invertebrate and 50 species of venomous snake she describes her job as a dream come true However she hasn t always loved spiders In fact there was a time when she was terrified of them but Mika was determined to pursue a career that would enable her to work with all cold blooded animals that she loved so much So in 2004 she contacted the British Herpetological Society BHS and volunteered the editing and design skills that she had honed from her previous career to them and seven years later she still volunteers for them having designed the Society s website taken on the role of Newsletter Editor and previously held the post of Associate Editor for the Society s flagship publication the Herpetological Journal She is also a member of the Society s education committee Overcoming her fear of spiders quite spectacularly after an incident involving an arboreal tarantula a box with no lid and half a coke bottle during her training at Venomtech Mika realised that spiders are quite amazing creatures She quickly embraced a role in animal technology rearing spiderlings cultivating flies as spider food and finding ways to improve husbandry for her leggy charges With her dedicated approach to her work Mika has helped ensure that the running of Venomtech s animal units continue to go from strength to strength She is currently studying for a BSc in Biodiversity Conservation and Management at the University of Kent THE ANDREW BLAKE TRIBUTE AWARD SPONSORED BY ASTRAZENECA 14 General Information

Platform Programme WEDNESDAY 28th MARCH 10 15 update on rodent euthanasia Carbon dioxide and alternative inhalation An techniques Huw Golledge BSc PhD Newcastle University Comparative Biology Centre Framlington Place Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4HH Debate continues regarding the humaneness of Carbon Dioxide CO2 as a euthanasia agent for laboratory rodents Some foreign regulatory bodies such as the Canadian Council on Animal Care no longer regard CO2 as an acceptable euthanasia agent recommending the use of Isoflurane instead Whilst still permitting the use of CO2 the new European Directive 2010 63 EU also now accepts the use of the inert gases Argon and Nitrogen as well as Isoflurane These changes are largely based on evidence that CO2 is aversive and that the alternatives may be less aversive I will examine the scientific rationale behind these changes and discuss whether this means that we should change our approach to euthanasia in the UK We have examined whether mice which undergo euthanasia with either CO2 or Isoflurane in their home cage show less signs of agitation and or distress than mice euthanased in an unfamiliar cage Mice exposed to Isoflurane showed significantly higher rates of behaviours which could be associated with excitation and stress such as running jumping and ataxia than those exposed to CO2 However the incidence of signs of agitation amongst Isoflurane treated mice was significantly reduced amongst those treated in their home cages I will also present evidence that neither Nitrogen nor Argon appear to be humane euthanasia agents for rodents despite their inclusion in the EU Directive Finally I will outline our current approach to measuring the aversiveness of various euthanasia agents which may in future provide more definitive answers on which agent is most humane 10 45 COFFEE TEA UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER SEMINAR Room Zest 1 11 15 BSc in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology Dr Nick Ashton Faculty of Life Sciences University of Manchester Manchester M13 9PT this presentation I will formally announce the launch of the University of In Manchester s new part time distance learning BSc in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology As Programme Director of the new degree I have been involved in the development of the curriculum in conjunction with the Institute of Animal Technology and employers in the animal technology sector I will present an overview of the new BSc programme including the aims and objectives of the programme the course structure the online delivery of teaching materials and the support systems that are in place to help students throughout their studies I will discuss the commitments required of both the student and their employer for the successful completion of the degree There will be ample opportunity for both prospective students and employers to ask questions and explore the benefits of the degree programme to career progression 34 Scientific Programme

Platform Programme THURSDAY 29th MARCH VENUE ATLAS THEATRE Chair David Anderson BVMS MVM MRCVS Superintendent Inspectorate Home Office Retired and Veterinary Adviser Pentland Management Systems 09 00 Reducing stress by jacket training Cynomolgus macaques for ECG recording Janine Hygate MIAT RAnTech NACWO and Rebecca Allison Huntingdon Life Sciences Ltd Woolley Road Alconbury Huntingdon Cambridgeshire PE28 4HS In 2010 we introduced a non invasive fully ambulatory method for recording ECGs in Cynomolgus macaques This presentation will cover where we started the challenges that we overcame and the refinements that we have made in the jacket design and animal training process We shall also discuss the significant animal welfare benefits that have been identified as a result of the introduction of the method 09 30 Axenic to Zoonotic dealing with the terminology used to define health status of animals Adrian Deeney BSc Hons CBiol FSB University College London Biological Services Gower Street London WC1E 6BT What is the difference between an axenic and a gnotobiotic mouse Why is the Schaedler flora important Where can you maintain SPF but not SOPF animals What organisms are commensal or zoonotic There is a wide range of terminology designed to help in understanding the health status of laboratory animals However unless the animal technologist knows the meaning of these terms they may not only be baffling but could also lead to catastrophic outcomes in the animal facility Therefore understanding the terminology enables the animal facility staff to maintain the animals in a way that protects the health status of the incoming animals or that of the resident population In this way terminology influences the type of housing used isolators IVCs open cages and how animals need to be handled during daily husbandry and experimental procedures However terminology is only a guide and should not be a substitute for more rigorous assessment of animal quality Impact on breeding performances of mice housed in IVCs at 50 air changes per 10 00 hour Giuliano Grignaschi BSc stituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri Via La Masa 19 20156 Milano Italy I The 50 Air Changes per Hour ACH setting of IVCs in combination with a beddingonly change procedure every two weeks and over a period of 26 weeks has been previously shown to affect negatively the Production Efficiency Index PEI in C57Bl 6 trios when the air is injected from the rear bottom of the cage This reduction in the PEI is not detectable when the number of air changes per hour is set at 75 and the air is injected from the rear top of the cage To determine whether the impact on breeding performances in C57Bl 6 trios is due to the lower number of air changes per hour the point of injection or a combination of the two conditions we compared the performances of two IVC systems The first is pre set at 50 ACH and with the air injected in the cage from the rear bottom the second normally operating at 75 ACH and with the air injected from the rear top of the cage was set at 50 ACH in order to work in a comparable quantitative condition in terms of air changes the main difference being the point of air injection Scientific Programme 37

KEVIN DOLAN MEMORIAL LECTURE formerly known as the Special Guest Lecture ALL CREATURES GRUNT AND SMELL the ups and downs of animal anaesthesia Professor Paul Flecknell MA VetMB PhD DECLAM DLAS DECVA Hon DACLAM Hon FRCVS I joined the Medical Research Council in 1977 at a time when analgesic use in all animal species was minimal The subsequent 35 years have seen tremendous developments in analgesia and anaesthesia and the application of these techniques to implement the 3Rs However analgesics are often not administered particularly to small rodents Paradoxically some Institutional Guidelines recommending repeated administration of high doses of analgesics may result in negative effects on animal welfare something that I never anticipated when advocating analgesic use in the 1980s The desire of Institutions and regulators to provide rigid guidelines on anaesthetics analgesics and euthanasia agents can also produce undesirable consequences Forbidding the use of particular anaesthetics may have no obvious benefit for animal welfare and may frustrate particular types of research All of us working with animals even with advanced technologies will appreciate that we do not always obtain the outcomes we anticipate This requires that we need to retain a very flexible approach to anaesthesia and analgesia Un cooperative subjects unpredictable effects of medications and practical issues related to body size all serve to develop a working ethos of expect the unexpected This lecture will examine both the serious and not so serious aspects of my career as a veterinary anaesthetist and laboratory animal veterinarian using a combination of traditional and non traditional delivery methods Paul Flecknell qualified from Cambridge Veterinary School in 1976 He completed his PhD at the University of London and is a Diplomate of the European Colleges of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and Laboratory Animal Medicine He is an Honorary Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal medicine and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recently he was awarded an Honorary doctorate by the University of Ghent He is currently Director of the Comparative Biology Centre at the University of Newcastle and is Professor of Laboratory Animal Science He started his career as a laboratory animal veterinarian at the MRC clinical research centre in Harrow in 1977 and moved to Newcastle in 1985 to become Director of the Centralised Research Animal Facilities His main research interests are anaesthesia and analgesia of all species of animals and in particular the development of methods of pain assessment His career has seen the introduction of A SP A EU directives and some major changes in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology His other interests include walking bird watching photography computer gaming and cooking Scientific Programme 41

Poster Presentations POSTERS Chair Patrick Hayes FIAT RAnTech DipBA Life Member Former Congress Committee Member and Immediate Past Editor of Animal Technology and Welfare Continuous 24 hour inhalation exposure considerations for effective study management Sam Worboys Huntingdon Life Sciences Woolley Road Alconbury Huntingdon Cambridgeshire PE28 4HS Non clinical safety testing investigations are performed to accepted and documented worldwide regulatory guidelines One of the primary parameters is duration of exposure This usually ranges from a period of 20 minutes a day for pharmaceutical products to 6 hours a day for chemicals and agrochemicals when risk is associated with a working environment or the use of a product There are occasions when the hazard or risk is associated with an environmental contaminant and so the study design may demand continuous exposure This poster details the procedures working regimen and technical systems required to successfully perform a continuous exposure study with emphasis on the planning and people management required to accommodate 24 hour exposure The particular investigation performed was an embryo foetal study in rats exposed to a gaseous pollutant Reduction and refinement of a tumour model system using hollow fibres Alison Ritchie University of Nottingham Queen s Medical Centre Division of Pre Clinical Oncology Nottingham NG7 2UHA The Hollow Fibre Assay HFA was established to bridge the gap between in vitro cell based assays for assessing drug efficacy and human tumour models Compared to the traditional xenograft model the HFA offers several scientific and welfare advantages including tumour burden reduction and retrieval of the human cells uncontaminated by host cells We have further refined the model by using tumour cells stably expressing a bioluminescent reporter gene allowing real time imaging of cell viability thus identifying clear early stage end points The incorporation of a novel extracellular matrix with a human stroma component mimics the human tumour micro environment providing a relevant model for identifying novel anti cancer compounds We have also modified the implant procedure to improve welfare by reducing invasive intervention We expect this improved system will reduce problems currently associated with the HFA and will also adhere to the 3Rs principles by increasing scientific output from a single animal and reducing the use of immune deficient models in drug discovery Scientific Programme 43

Poster Presentations Comparison of pre metamorphosis diets suitable for Zebrafish fry Heather Callaway University College London Division of Biosciences The Zebrafish Facility Gower Street London WC1E 6BT A balanced diet is needed for optimum growth By comparing 5 pre metamorphosis diets we try to ascertain which diet gives rise to both optimum survival rates and maximum growth We compare various combinations of paramecium rotifers and dry food There is currently no standardisation for Zebrafish fry diets which leads to various different diets being used with varying degrees of success If a diet can be established that achieves both optimal growth and survival rates this will be a refinement of practice as well as leading to a reduction of numbers of fry needed to go into a rearing programme Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy PEG catheter placement for intragastric dosing studies in the G ttingen Minipig Adrian Zetler Veterinary Technician Services Ellegaard G ttingen Minipigs A S Soroe Landevej 302 DK 4261 Dalmose Denmark Oral dosing is widely used to test compounds in minipigs The procedure of oral dosing by gavage is stressful for the animals and may require up to 3 or 4 technicians to perform it In humans Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy PEG catheters are commonly used to feed patients who are not able to ingest food and where the placement of a nasal intragastric catheter is not possible We suggested that oral dosing studies in minipigs would be easier to perform and would cause less distress for the animals when using PEG catheters due to the absence of the need for restraint For this reason we investigated if PEG catheters could be placed and maintained in minipigs Two male minipigs with a body weight of 6kg were deeply anaesthetised Via a gastric endoscope the ventricle was insufflated with CO2 and a PEG catheter was placed transabdominally The animals were housed post operatively for three weeks PEG placement was performed without complications and the animals recovery was routine and uneventful Both animals had a normal appetite and growth Pathological inspection revealed a sheet of connective tissue around the catheter with slight inflammation in both animals One animal had slight erythema and exudation around the catheter and an adhesion 1x1 cm of the spleen The study demonstrated that PEG catheter placement in the Minipig is possible without major complications 44 Scientific Programme

Poster Displays Animal tech service Julie Andow Molecular Oncology Barts Cancer Institute Queen Mary University of London Charterhouse Square London EC1M 6BQ The Barts Cancer Institute a Cancer Research UK Centre of Excellence based at Queen Mary University of London has recently set up an institute wide animal tech service ATS The advantages of our service include new roles independent of the husbandry providing electronic record keeping of all experiments giving consistency between laboratories and maintaining high standards of experimental techniques and welfare Responsibilities involve carrying out a wide range of in vivo procedures PCR genotyping and providing technical training Being only involved in the practical part of any experiment means that the ATS staff can remain neutral to any experiments and become skilled in many procedures relevant to the institute They can also provide an important bridge between the animal house and the laboratory offering knowledge to users on legal requirements and in house protocols This poster outlines some of the procedures carried out by the ATS at the Barts Cancer Institute and illustrates the benefits of the service for any similar institute Syringe training family marmosets Kendra Cummings DSTL Building 02 Porton Down Porton Sailsbury Wiltshire SP4 0QJ Syringe training is a method which has been adopted at DSTL to train animals to co operate when they are required to be administered oral medication The purpose of syringe training is to reduce stress and to avoid any injuries whilst being hand caught to receive medication Training the marmosets to come forward voluntarily to receive their treatment from a syringe will reduce both these factors The Mouse Hospital Cage to bedside ultrasound imaging in a mouse model of pancreatic cancer Paul Makin Tuveson Laboratory Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute Robinson Way Cambridge CB2 0RE Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma PDA is the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the UK Prognosis is extremely poor and survival of patients with advanced disease is about 6 months Despite major efforts in research most therapies fail to improve survival and novel therapies are urgently required for this fatal disease Our lab has produced a genetically engineered mouse model that develops advanced PDA recapitulating the human disease tumour microenvironment occurrence and site of metastasis as well as clinical symptoms This mouse model is likely to be more predictive for treatments that can be translated to patients Our team streamline the production of mice suitable for enrolment onto therapeutic studies Palpation of the triple mutants confirms tumour presence Tumours are measured by ultrasound imaging to confirm and follow PDA growth Mice with a defined tumour burden are enrolled onto study 46 Scientific Programme

Poster Displays Preferred method for chronic oral dosing in guinea pigs Lian Blyth GlaxoSmithKline Gunnels Wood Road Stevenage Hertfordshire SG1 2NY In order to test new medicines for current unmet needs in cardiovascular disease namely imbalance in high density lipoproteins and low density lipoproteins with a reduced side effect profile guinea pigs need to be chronically orally dosed with the compound This poster describes a safe gentle and effective method of oral dosing in guinea pigs that is the only method that consistently caused no damage to the oesophagus An evaluation of asepsis in a sterile water pouch the length of time it remains sterile compared to the asepsis of a traditional autoclaved water bottle filled with sterile water using aseptic techniques Mark Powell University of Manchester Biological Services Facility 4th Floor Stopford Building Oxford Road Manchester M13 9PL When it comes to the drinking water of laboratory rodents appropriate hygiene and sanitation is imperative Laboratory animal facilities must often strike a balance in providing water to laboratory rodents in an efficient manner whilst ensuring the highest quality of drinking water and acceptable quantities consistent with the institution s research mission needs The aim of this study is to highlight the asepsis of the sterile water pouch the length of time in which the water within the pouch stays sterile and exactly to what extent As well as examining the asepsis of the water pouch and length of time the water stays sterile a comparison study will also be carried out highlighting the asepsis of a traditional autoclaved water bottle filled with sterile water using sterile techniques Scientific Programme 47

Poster Displays Setting up and maintaining a bio containment unit to run side by side with flexible film isolators Mark Harrison MRC Harwell Mary Lyon Centre Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Didcot Oxfordshire OX11 0RD The Mary Lyon Centre s quarantine suite MLC Q specialises in cleaning up mouse stocks before transferring them to the SPF barrier facility In this capacity the MLC Q operates high and low health status flexible film isolators In addition the MLC Q has had a Biocontainment Unit BCU high security IVC caging system running side by side with the flexible film isolators for 3 years During this period mice of varying health status have been imported and housed on the BCU We have also undertaken an infection challenge study without compromising the bio security of existing isolators In order to operate the BCU successfully we have had to constantly review and modify our working practices within the MLC Q to safe guard the bio security of the mice and unit This poster goes through some of the modifications and compromises that have been necessary to set up and maintain the BCU alongside our existing flexible film isolators Food trials conducted to improve the survival and development of Zebrafish Nicola Goodwin Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Wellcome Trust Genome Campus Hinxton Cambridge CB10 1SA Zebrafish have joined the mouse as one of the most important model organisms to study biological processes in vivo due in part to their high fecundity rapid generation time and optical transparency during embryogenesis While there are considerable amounts of literature about Zebrafish research there is very little with regards to their husbandry requirements most importantly their nutritional needs Research facilities can suffer high mortality rates within their Zebrafish fry as well as experiencing deformities and gender bias when nutritional requirements are not met We have looked at a variety of feeding regimes that have enhanced the survival rate and quality of life of our Zebrafish fry The aim of this project was to define the optimal diet and husbandry regimes to support fry development by providing appropriate nutrients levels that improve survival rates and gender ratio while reducing the incidents of deformities during early development Modular ferret caging Pauline Reading Royal Veterinary College Biological Services Unit Royal College Street London NW1 0TU The modular ferret caging is composed of standardised units for easy construction or flexible arrangement It is ideal for group housing or isolation if needed i e for procedures sickness or fighting The caging can connect like a massive rubik cube which becomes a fun house ideal for ferrets or even marmosets encouraging social environmental and natural behaviour The other attributes of this caging are it allows simple access is quick and easy to connect straightforward to clean has detachable shelving flooring and side panels plus gives the inhabitants a panoramic view 48 Scientific Programme

Poster Displays More bedding is better for mice Mark White Medical Research Council Prion Unit Queen Square House Queen Square London WC1N 3BG Following a recent study at the MRC Prion Unit several beneficial observations were noticed when more than the normal amount of bedding was added to cage bases By using a bedding dispenser it allowed us to provide a standardised volume into each cage base We believe that this offers a significant improvement to the environmental enrichment provided for the mice We therefore suggest this enrichment can be used to support experimental work as well as benefit mice used for breeding Abdominal lavage a refinement method for collection of parasites from the abdominal cavity of gerbils Stephen Johnson University of Liverpool Biomedical Services Unit Duncan Building Daulby Street Liverpool L69 3GA Mongolian gerbils Meriones unguiculatus infected with laboratory strains of parasitic nematodes produce microfilaria of the human tropical disease Lymphatic Filariasis Maintaining the parasitic lifecycle relies on aspiration of sterile media from the peritoneal cavity using a needle and syringe This method often results in low yields of parasites due to the low volume of media recovered and also risks damage to abdominal organs An alternative method has been trialled using an over the needle catheter to introduce the sterile media into the peritoneal cavity Removal of the needle allows the media and parasites to passively drain into a collection tube The aim of using this gravity assisted method is to refine and improve the collection of microfilaria from the peritoneal cavity by minimising damage to abdominal organs and recovering larger volumes of media Scientific Programme 49

Workshop Sessions Please refer to the Table on page 54 for times and venues 2 HOURS CPD CREDIT Workshop 1 How to achieve minimum standards of aseptic technique Presented by Noelia Lopez Salesansky DVM MAnimSc MRCVS and Lucy Whitfield MA VetMB DLAS MRCVS Centre for Animal Welfare The Royal Veterinary College Royal College Street London NW1 0TU This workshop will show that aseptic surgical technique improves animal welfare and reduces research variables associated with stress and bacterial contamination Participants will be instructed on the main aspects of good aseptic technique in experimental surgery and have the chance to implement these techniques in an imaginary surgical scenario Topics include l guidelines associated with experimental surgery l aseptic preparation of the surgery area equipment patient and surgeon l maintenance of an aseptic surgical environment l pre operative intra operative and post operative care of rodents Noelia qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon from the University of Las Palmas Spain in 2000 After a spell in small animal general practice she moved into the laboratory animal field working as a Named Veterinary Surgeon at the RVC In 2006 she took a sabbatical year to study a Master in Animal Science Genetics and Biotechnology at the University of Sydney Australia The title of the Master Thesis was Mapping of Genes Associated with ASD Atrial Septal Defect in Mice She is a Convenor of LASA Care and Welfare Section and a member of LAVA and AWSELVA She was part of the assessment panel for the N3CRs LASA Small Awards Scheme She started her PhD on Olfactory effects of husbandry on mouse welfare at the RVC in 2011 After four years in general veterinary practice Lucy joined the technical services team of an animal health company which opened up an insight into the fascinating world of laboratory animal science She made the move to full time Named Veterinary Surgeon work soon afterwards and is still hooked and still learning Director of NVS services at the Royal Veterinary College since 2004 Lucy splits her work between clinical visits to the research clients and teaching at the College Lucy holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons RCVS Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and is an examiner for the RCVS the RVC s Animal Welfare MSc course and previously the Institute of Animal Technology s Membership Board Enthusiastic to contribute to this interesting veterinary field Lucy is a past president of LAVA and current member of LASA s Ethics Training and Education committee which has recently published guidance on surgical practice and Ethical Review Process function Scientific Programme 53

Workshop Sessions Ron retired from Cancer Research UK as Head of Biological Resources after a total of 49 years He also spent one year at the Royal Free School of Medicine as Chief Technician 1966 During his career he served on Council acted as the convenor for the Management Section of LASA organised yearly seminars for the RAnTech Board designed several new animal laboratory facilities including San Francisco and Oxford and organised workshops and presentations in numerous countries Ron is still an active member of the Registration Board Adrian is Director of Biological Services at University College London He graduated in microbiology from the University of London in 1977 and began his career with Bantin and Kingman setting up their microbiology laboratories However he was also involved in various aspects of the company and subsequently became General Manager Following this he was Director of the Animal Resources Centre in Perth Western Australia a statutory authority of the government of Western Australia On returning to the UK Adrian established a health monitoring laboratory at the University of Birmingham before joining Harlan as Technical Services Manager in 1991 Here he led the health monitoring genetic immunological and bioproduct services provided by the company He has been an active member of the two FELASA working groups on animal health monitoring whose published recommendations have become the yardstick for health monitoring in Europe and worldwide Since joining the London Research Institute Cancer Research UK Gary is now Head of Biological Resources and has organised and carried out a major departmental restructuring programme plus has been responsible for the successful opening of the new state of the art P Block animal facility at Clare Hall He is also a member of the BRF design and equipment procurement working group for the Francis Crick Institute Gary began his career in animal technology in 1978 as a Junior Technician at the Chester Beatty Institute for Cancer Research In 1981 he joined Imperial College London where he stayed for nearly 28 years becoming the Facilities Manager for the Department of Central Biomedical Services where he was responsible for managing all aspects of animal care and welfare Awarded a first class honours degree in Animal Technology in 2003 Gary is also professionally qualified in health and safety obtaining the NEBOSH Diploma in 2001 In 2005 he was awarded a Diploma in Management from the Institute of Chartered Management In 2007 he was selected as the UK recipient of the AAALAC International Technician Fellowship Award A Fellow of the Institute of Animal Technology since 1989 Gary is an experienced lecturer as well as a contributor to several animal welfare journals He currently serves on the IAT Board of Moderators Scientific Programme 55

Workshop Sessions 2 HOURS CPD CREDIT Workshop 4 Dispelling myths being honest and open Presented by Bella Williams PhD Understanding Animal Research Charles Darwin House London WC1N 2JU This workshop explores public engagement and animal research asking What do you find difficult about talking on animal research Topics include l where when have you talked about animal research l have you ever skirted round or not talked about it l personal public engagement practice l what are those environments like l how do you feel during those discussions presentations l what is there to fear l what differences are there talking to different audiences l what are the characteristic responses you encounter l what do you think are the reasons for those Bella Williams started out as a Pharmacologist with an interest in how focused research fits into the bigger picture Since making a move into full time science communication she has worked on a variety of science writing and public engagement projects many of which have looked at how academic work is communicated to influencers of the public such as policy makers and media She has worked as a consultant and evaluator investigating strategies behind making this communication effective Bella frequently talks on the use of animals in research and leads the Understanding Animal Research UAR openness programme supporting members to be more transparent about their animal work She is also involved in providing direct support for members targeted by animal rights campaigns Scientific Programme 57

Workshop Sessions Workshop 5 2 HOURS CPD CREDIT Taking good care of minipigs Presented by Adrian Zeltner Ellegaard G ttingen Minipigs A S Soroe Landevej 302 DK 4261 Dalmose Denmark Minipigs as laboratory animals have grown in popularity but it is still a niche species and many technicians are not confident handling them This workshop will give the opportunity to explore the possibilities discuss the challenges and learn about the benefits of animal training when working with this species Topics include l animal welfare discussion good husbandry and enrichment l handling and dosing minipigs need a slightly different approach than other large animals the basics in restraining and dosing are taught and possible challenges are pointed out l animal training can play a huge role in the refinement element of the 3Rs and the technique of using a clicker will involve interactive training for participants The methods learned are not only applicable for minipigs but for many other mammals Educated as a Laboratory Technician at Ciba Geigy Novartis Norway Adrian then worked in various pharmaceutical companies and universities in Switzerland For the last 6 years he has been employed at Ellegaard G ttingen Minipigs in Denmark as a customer service and support person He has held workshops and presentations at GV SOLAS Igtp BCLAS ScandLAS and smaller events A big part of Adrian s work is to make visits around Europe and lecture on handling minipigs 58 Scientific Programme

Workshop Sessions 2 HOURS CPD CREDIT Workshop 6 Assessing pain using facial expressions of laboratory animals Presented by Matthew Leach PhD Comparative Biology Centre Newcastle University Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4HH Recent papers by Langford et al 2010 and Sotocinal et al 2011 convincingly demonstrate that mice and rats exhibit facial expressions associated with pain following a range of nociceptive models Can similar expressions be identified in these and other species following other painful procedures If they can easily be recognised and recorded then this could improve our ability to assess pain The results of this and further studies on facial expressions associated with pain will be discussed Topics include l overview of the method and equipment l guidance on how to capture video footage of sufficient quality l participation in ongoing study to assess its effectiveness Langford D Bailey A Chanda M et al Coding of facial expressions of pain in the laboratory mouse Nature Methods 2010 7 6 447 449 Sotocinal SG Tuttle AH Marton LI et al 2011 The rat grimace scale a partially automated method for quantifying pain in the laboratory rat via facial expressions Molecular Pain 7 55 Matthew Leach is an animal welfare scientist at Newcastle University His research has focused on various aspects of pain and distress in laboratory animals In particular the assessment and alleviation of post procedure pain the assessment of pain and distress associated with euthanasia and how housing husbandry and common procedures can affect the psychological or mental state of laboratory animals and its influence on pain and distress Scientific Programme 59

Workshop Sessions Workshop 7 1 HOUR CPD CREDIT Practicalities of mouse handling Presented by John Waters BSc Hons MIAT Mammalian Behaviour and Evolution Group Institute of Integrative Biology University of Liverpool Liverpool L69 3BY This workshop will be linked to the platform paper that Dr Jane Hurst is presenting entitled taming anxiety in laboratory mice This will be a led discussion to address major issues around the handling of mice within animal facilities Specific difficulties that may be encountered will also be discussed together with issues surrounding implementation and training and the benefits for animal welfare and for the animal technician relationship Topics include l alternative methods and practicalities of handling l time costs associated with different methods l effects on the technician s working practices l combining health checks with handling l the benefits of handling tubes John started at Liverpool University Medical School in 1990 as a Trainee Technician learning all about husbandry of animals and training in Home Office procedures He has held a Home Office Licence since 1994 and been trained in most procedures John completed the old Intermediate IAT Exam in 1992 and then the Membership exam in 1994 He gained BTEC in Life Sciences and then moved to the School of Tropical Medicine to work with the Squirrel Monkey colony John attained the HNC in Biology in 1997 and then went on to complete a degree in Zoology in 2000 His current position is at the University s Leahurst site where in 2001 as a Senior Technician after gaining NACWO status he became Chief Technician The work the University is primarily involved in is behaviour and welfare communication and mate choice in wild mice John is responsible for all animal related duties and in charge of a small team of dedicated Technicians Although mainly now being involved with rodents in his 22 years as an Animal Technician John has worked with most species He is very interested in animal welfare and very keen to promote this John feels by sharing this work and findings it can lead to others implementing what the University has done which can only be a positive step in improving conditions for laboratory rodents 60 Scientific Programme
