Dr. Charles E. Wright, Sr.FacilitatorThe Church and Prophecy The historical context of our first scripture occurs during the lastweek of our Lord's ministry, usually called the Passion Week. Thatweek was a time of conflict and turmoil culminating in thecrucifixion of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. As Matthew24:lindicates Jesus and His disciples were leaving the Templegrounds and the disciples called His attention to the beauty of theTemple. Jesus answered them by saying that the day would comewhen the Temple would be destroyed. Because of the centralityand importance of the Temple to Jewish life and culture thedisciples were surprised and asked Jesus three questions: (1)When will this be? (2) What will be the sign of your coming? (3)What will be the sign of the end of the age?The Olivet Discourse that follows in chapters 24 and 25 answers the questions of verse three of Matthew24. In verse 8 Jesus said in summary form to the signs of verses 4-7 that; "these are the beginnings ofsorrow". In the original Greek of the New Testament the words "birth pains" are used. The New EnglishBible also translates the words as birth pains. The words birth pains signal the soon arrival or beginningof a new era, existence as we know it is about to change. Seven distinct areas of change are to be notedSeven distinct areas of change are to be noted.1. Religious deception2. International revolution3. War4. Famines5. Earthquakes6. Plagues7. Strange events in the skiesMatthew 16:18; 1 Timothy 4:1-6; 2; I Thessalonians 4:13-17
The first three indicators may be dealt with under the headings of:1. Social disintegration2. Political stagnation3. Economic instability4. Religious apostasyWe have witnessed in our times the unraveling of the fabric of our society religiously, politically, sociallyand economically. Religiously we are at a point in these Post-modem times where propositional religion orobjective truth is frowned upon. It is a time of religious and cultural relativism. This has come about in partbecause the Bible as the divinely inspired and authoritative word of God has been pushed to the fringes oflife and the autonomous self has taken center stage in life as its own guide (2 Tim. 3:2). Secular humanismhas replaced the Bible as a guide for many. It has become a time of religious and cultural relativism.Whatever serves the perceived immediate needs of the individual is all right for him, not what the Biblesays. As a result of this drift in values we are witnessing psychic dislocation in society at all levels.Continued P2
Our second scripture focuses upon the religious and moralconditions of the last days. I would like to briefly look at the impacton the youth of our society that the liberalizing tendency hasbrought us. Ron Hutchcraft in his book The Battle for a Generationsaid: "I believe there has been an unfolding of a satanic strategyfor capturing a generation, because in each of those decades kidswere stripped of something essential to growing up whole". Satanknows that if he can capture a generation, he owns all those thatcome after.1. In the 1950's kids lost their innocence.2. In the 1960's kids lost their sense of respect for authority.3. In the 1970's kids lost their sense of being loved.4. In the 1980's our children lost the sense of hope. This progressive degeneration brought society to the point wherewe are witnessing increasing suicides, violence and drug abuse.Seventy-eight percent of the young people who die in this countrydie a violent death. The losses of the four decades have brought usto the point where we witness:• Every 78 seconds an adolescent attempts suicide. Every 90minutes one succeeds.• Every 20 minutes an adolescent is killed in an accident.• Every 80 minutes one is murdered.• Every 31 seconds an adolescent becomes pregnant.• Nearly half of all high school seniors have had used an illegaldrug at least once and almost 90 percent have used alcohol, someon a daily basis. Our youth today are the products of those decades of losses of the fifties and onward. It is time for us to paymore attention to the signs of the times and how they are impacting our youth and increase our efforts torescue as many as we can as we await the second coming of Jesus.Continued P3
THE EMOTIONAL STRESS AND IMPACT OF LIVING INDYSFUNCTIONAL TIMESDeacon William I. Moore - FacilitatorAnd there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; andupon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and wavesroaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those thingswhich are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken."St. Luke 21:25,26."And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overchargedwith surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that daycome upon you unawares." St. Luke 21:34"...stir up the gift of God, which is in thee...For God hath not given us the spiritof fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Tim. 1: 6,7.OVERVIEW:When we realize that the prophecies concerning the first advent of Christ have literally been fulfilled, consistency demand that the unfilled promises of the second coming of Christ must come to pass inthe same literal way.As the church, we look for, we teach, we expect that "blessed hope."The terrifying "signs of the times", as given by the Lord Jesus in Matt. 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 are not forthe Church; they have to do specifically with the time between the rapture of the Church and thecoming of Christ to rule the earth. We know that great events cast their shadows beforehand, so that when we observe false teachers, religious apostasy, floods, earthquakes, and the constant threat of terrorism; we know that the comingof the Lord is near.St. Luke 21:25,26, shows the perplexity, fear, emotional turmoil and foreboding of men in the face ofcosmic disaster. Emotionally, situations threaten to spill over our boundaries and flood our ability tocope. There is a crisis near at hand, and another more: remote: so closely intertwined are they thatthere is almost no possibility now of separating the one from the other. Such moments do come, whenwe are up against it, and cannot get away, and none of the old "dodges" will do.

Emotionally, situations threaten to spill over our boundaries and flood our ability tocope. There is a crisis near at hand, and another more: remote: so closely intertwined are they thatthere is almost no possibility now of separating the one from the other. Such moments do come, whenwe are up against it, and cannot get away, and none of the old "dodges" will do.Life is like that. It does not move smoothly on and up. This is called reality, and we run into it. And ithurts. But Jesus said: "let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me..." St. John 14:1-3.I. Troubled Times: Statistics of Fear and Reality. There are more guns in America than people. There is murder in our homes, in our schools and in ourchurches. -The face of hunger is all around us, with 49 million people "food insecure." Yet Food Stamps benefitsare planning to be cut.-Millions of seniors face retirement with no savings. And Social Security, their only source of income, may be reduced. Yet planned Tax-Cuts will go to the rich.-The marriage rate is falling, and out-of-wedlock births are increasing. 70% of births in N.Y.C. Are to theunmarried.-Drug or opioid addiction is raging, even in the white community, with over 200 people dying eachday.Fear and anxiety fill the land, even God's House. These are, indeed, the "times which try men's souls",and cause mental and spiritual instability. No one is immune to the grip of fear, anxiety and stress. These are the uninvited guest when tragedy orhardships hit. If not mastered, they may become our constant companions, undermining our healthand promoting depression, domestic disarray and other disorders.
THE EMOTIONAL STRESS AND IMPACT OF LIVING INDYSFUNCTIONAL TIMESContinued Pg. 3II. The dynamics of mental and spiritual instability caused by Traum, fear, anxiety and stress, resulting in crisis.Defining Terms:Trauma - is the response to any event that shatters your safe world so that it's no longer a place ofrefuge. Trauma is more than a state of crisis. It is a normal reaction to abnormal events thatoverwhelm a person's ability to adapt to life where you feel powerless.Crisis - in its simplest terms is defined as an upset in steady or balanced state. It is a decisive turningpoint beyond which something crucial will happen. A crisis is always self-limiting, lasting up to 6-8weeks. Consequences, though. Can be long-term.Crisis brings forth poor judgement, emotional distortions and poor coping skills. The most difficultpiece for the saints and helpers is self-management or controlled emotional involvement. Our need to "fix" or " heal" makes us particularly susceptible to psychologically "catching" the person'scontagious state of urgency. For example, the Levite keeping the Ark from falling- I Chr. 16.Fear - is a crippling reaction to an identifiable threat, real or imagined. Fearfulness is a sinful state -Rev. 21:8. It reflects a lack of trust in God. Fearful people cannot live an abundant life; they cannot begenerous, charitable, or forgiving. Fear constricts the soul and keeps us from being as fully human asGod would like us to be.In the Bible, virtually the first words spoken by man to God are an expression of fear. Responding toGod's question, "where are you?", Adam said. "I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid."Worry is another face of fear. It is the expression of fear of the future. It is a solitary burden which wetend to carry alone.Even more destructive is anxiety, which is unconscious, and is usually within one 's self; whereas fear isdirected toward things one consciously knows about, and which are usually outside of one's self . Stress - a state of physical and psychological arousal, when the body pumps out physical a physicalresponse: Moderate -good, productive.1."Too much" - Burnout.2."Too little" - Rush out, stagnation.3.
Continued Pg. 4What are some coping strategies:-Prayer, supplication and thanksgiving: Phil. 4:6,7-Submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit: Jn. 16:13; 14: 16,18.-Development of Spiritual Gifts Knowledge, Wisdom; Discernment.-Delegate.-Get some rest - Take a vacation.-Accept what can't be changed.-Eat healthy.-Make time for love, play and recreation. Hug a child. Watch the rising of the sun.-Leave your cell phone at home.-Laugh more - " Don't take yourself so seriously".-And don't forget to sing
