10th Annual Global Educators Conference Featured Speakers STATE OF OUR WORLD A DIALOGUE WITH AMBASSADORS Three former ambassadors in dialogue with Holton Arms Head of School Susanna Jones In partnership with American Women for International Understanding Ambassador ret Judith Cefkin Ambassador Cefkin served concurrently as the U S ambassador to Fiji Kiribati Nauru Tonga and Tuvalu while residing in Suva Fiji Her diplomatic assignments included France Mexico and The Philippines She also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U S Embassy in Bangkok Among her numerous assignments in the State Department Judith also served as the State Department s Senior Advisor for Burma Ambassador ret Eunice Reddick Ambassador Reddick served as the ambassador to Niger as well as to Gabon and S o Tom and Pr ncipe Reddick has worked in a great number of different embassies in countries including Zimbabwe Tanzania China Burma Cambodia Laos Thailand Vietnam Taiwan Philippines Malaysia Brunei and Singapore She currently teaches at Howard University and Georgetown University Ambassador ret Tatiana Gfoeller Ambassador Gfoeller served as the ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic located in Central Asia and part of the former Soviet Union and was political advisor to the Joint Chief of Staff in the Pentagon from 2011 2017 Gfoeller has a long career in foreign service including postings in Poland Saudi Arabia Bahrain the Soviet Union Belgium and Russia Gfoeller has also served as a Deputy Chief of Mission in Turkmenistan Deputy Principal Officer in Russia and Consul General in Jeddah Saudi Arabia Gfoeller authored a book on U S foreign policy interests in the Caspian Basin and taught at Georgetown University 2 W W W GEBG ORG

GLOBAL EDUCATION ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Dr Veronica Boix Mansilla Dr Veronica Boix Mansilla is a senior principal investigator at Project Zero the renowned educational research institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and leading international expert on global and intercultural education especially for primary and secondary K 12 students Boix Mansilla s research examines conditions that enable individuals to understand and take action on the most pressing issues of our times from human migration to climate change and environmental stewardship The resulting research based frameworks and tools have set the foundations for high quality interdisciplinary global and intercultural education at Project Zero OECD Asia Society Smithsonian Institution and the International Baccalaureate among other high reach initiatives A second edition of Boix Mansilla s seminal book Educating for Global Competence came out in 2022 with updated materials and insights for continuing this essential work in light of today s changing world HOLTON ARMS SCHOOL WASHINGTON D C APRIL 12 15 2023 3

10th Annual Global Educators Conference STATE OF OUR WORLD A DIALOGUE WITH ALUMNI JOURNALISTS FACILITATED BY Holton Arms School Alumna and Board Member Clara Brillembourg Justin Worland Justin Worland is a Washington D C based senior correspondent for Time covering climate change and the intersection of policy politics and society He has covered the topic since 2015 Previously he covered health and breaking news for the magazine In 2022 Worland was named the inaugural Climate Journalist of the Year by Covering Climate Now a non profit dedicated to improving climate journalism He is a founding steering committee member at the Uproot Project a non profit organization that works to diversify environmental journalism He is a graduate of Polytechnic School in California Joshua Keating Joshua Keating is a writer and analyst focusing on world news and foreign policy He is currently the Global Security Reporter at Grid His first book Invisible Countries Journeys to the Edge of Nationhood was published by Yale University Press in 2018 He has reported from countries including Iraq Somalia Russia China and Haiti His work has been published by the New York Times Washington Post Los Angeles Times Guardian Politico Smithsonian Magazine and Roads Kingdoms and he has been featured as a commentator on international affairs on CNN MSNBC NPR the BBC and Al Jazeera He is a graduate of Packer Collegiate School in New York 4 W W W GEBG ORG

Empowering Youth Using Migration Stories in Curriculum As Windows Mirrors and Sliding Doors CLASSROOM AND VIRTUAL CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT D120 MS CLASSROOM This session will highlight the work we conducted in partnership with the Re Imagining Migration RIM team to redesign BB N s Grade 5 Social Studies curriculum We will show how we deepened the understanding of migration while promoting essential dispositions for participating in a world of migration the capacity to stay curious understand multiple perspectives and identify similarities and differences of migration experiences and how those shaped people and communities Guided by BB N s Global Competency Framework our teachers utilized shared practices to foster engagement in critical reflection and ongoing anti bias anti racist learning to help students develop their own identities and become agents for change By teaching a range of skills related to human migration students learned about others lives as if peering through a window to a new world while at the same time offering a mirror with which to examine their own or their family s story of migration One way we did so was to demonstrate how analyzing historical US immigration policy aids in understanding immigration patterns today Additionally we used Project Zero s Thinking Routines for deeper inquiry and encouraging action PRESENTED BY Karina Baum Buckingham Browne and Nichols School MA USA Abeer Shinnawi Re Imagining Migration MA USA The Day After a Crisis Managing the Aftermath of a Traumatic Event RISK MANAGEMENT MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY HALL Having an emergency or a crisis while traveling with students is always a traumatic experience that often leaves an impact long after the immediate emergency is resolved While we have many valuable resources to manage emergencies in the country we often find ourselves without a roadmap to deal with the aftermath of a traumatic event that has left both faculty and students in shock and emotionally drained In this presentation we will explore the effects of emergencies on the whole group and how to address the fallout of a group crisis We will review some protocols for communication and strategies to get the group back on track to fulfill its program goals PRESENTED BY Santiago Enrique Arias Sophie Paris Miss Porter s School CT USA Proof of Impact Evaluating Outcomes of Global Education and Immersion PROFESSIONAL GROWTH FOR GLOBAL EDUCATORS THE EACHO LECTURE HALL We know that global education and intercultural experiences positively impact students both as they participate in these experiences and throughout their lives But how do we prove it In partnership with researchers at Harvard University Global Citizen Year has demonstrated unequivocally that our immersive intercultural learning experiences are impactful Our programs result in statistically significant growth in Global Competence college readiness mental health and happiness Our students also develop the hard skills associated with 21st Century Learning and Global Competence including collaboration and teamwork giving and receiving feedback critical and creative thinking HOLTON ARMS SCHOOL WASHINGTON D C APRIL 12 15 2023 15
