The da Vinci Xi Robot single console system allows surgeons to perform delicate operations with great precision but requiring only tiny incisions. The da Vinci Xi, the fourth generation in da Vinci technology, integrates robotics and extremely sophisticated computer technology with the skills of the surgeon. It features immersive D-HD visualization and robotic instruments, which allows the surgeon to maneuver and control instruments with smaller, more precise movements inside the patient’s body. Unique to the da Vinci Xi version is the ability for surgeons to go into multiple quadrants with new arms designed to work in degrees--something highly advantageous for complex procedures. The enhanced technology allows for magnication and superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy, which increases safety and accuracy. By avoiding the large incisions of open surgery, robotic surgery helps avoid many post-surgical complications while speeding the patient’s recovery. da Vinci Xi Features•A new overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position.•A new endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved vision denition and clarity.•An ability to attach the endoscope to any arm, providing exibility for visualizing the surgical site.•Small, thin arms with newly designed joints that oer a greater range of motion than ever before.Less is More: Patient Benefits of Robotic Surgery •Less invasive •Less hospital time•Less down time•Less pain •Less blood loss In March, I was pleased to perform a robotic partial nephrectomy using Community Hospital’s new da Vinci Xi. Moving forward, surgeons at Community Hospital will use this technology to treat a wide variety of medical conditions across a multitude of surgical specialties, including general surgery, colorectal, gynecology, and urology.Avinash Chenam, MD Medical Director, Robotic Surgery Program

Community Hospital of San Bernardino Medical Dialogue 3Neurological Care Wing Opening Community Hospital of San Bernardino is excited to announce the opening of our expanded Neurological Care Wing, which opens this spring. The expanded wing will help fulll the need for subacute beds across the state of California, as we have received inquiries on bed availability from all over the State, as far away as Sacramento area hospitals. Since our current unit is almost constantly full, we are adding another beds to our current beds capacity for a total of beds. The unit is staed by a dedicated team of seven Internal Medicine physicians who routinely round on patients, in addition to most of the specialists at Community Hospital who are credentialed and provide services to our unit’s patients when needed.Conditions TreatedThe expanded unit will treat all patients with subacute conditions, but mainly those with respiratory failure who require ventilator management for an extended time. The unit will also treat patients who require intensive nursing help with the ADLs activities of daily living, as many of our patients have suered a catastrophic event, such as cerebrovascular accident or traumatic brain injury, and require extensive nursing care. In addition, being part of Community Hospital of San Bernardino provides us with an advantage of being able to access a broad range of services that are not usually available at other subacute units. For instance, we have multiple patients with nephrostomy tubes that require routine changes every few weeks. Traditionally, such procedures require patients to be transferred and admitted to an acute facility in order to change these tubes. However, at our unit we are able to perform these procedures without the need for hospitalization–thanks to the ability to use the specialists and services available at Community Hospital. In addition, we oer a broad range of services, including wound care, respiratory care, behavioral and psychiatric care, and treatments that are rarely available at a subacute unit, such as blood transfusions. Thanks to all of our physicians who are helping us to meet the demand for more subacute beds, not only in our community, but across the State as well.
