SAMSUNG SEMICONDUCTOR INC.SAN JOSE, CASamsung Semiconductor Inc. (SSI) is a hybrid concrete-steel project designed by NBBJ. This campus-style development comprises three structures: two 10-story oce towers with a series of green floors, a podium building with a clean room and data center, a single-level cafeteria, and a nine-level parking structure. With a total area of 636,000 square feet, this project provides ample space for recreation, with gardens, fitness centers, putting greens, and recreation courts.To create a flexible, collaborative, and sustainable campus, we utilized modular and prefabricated construction methods for various aspects of the interior scope. These methods include using o-site manufactured partitions and modular to create interior oce spaces, conference rooms, and individual workspaces. The curtainwall panels were also prefabricated o-site, shipped to the site, and installed with cranes. It also includes connected parking totaling 36,030 square feet with 143 stalls. This multi-functional space houses various facilities, such as oces, conference centers, two large screening rooms, a formal pre-function area for private screenings and production facilities, and an interior amphitheater. The elliptical outdoor courtyard provides movable seating for spontaneous gatherings, activities, and special events.The facility's grand lobby connects two workplace floors by an interior atrium with enclosed glass conference rooms above. The atrium is a three-story bleacher space with a sizeable skylit area in the center of the facility, serving as a crossroads where people can see each other from all floors and use the bleachers for informal and formal sharing. It includes three levels of oce space, a conference center, retail, a café, and the airport’s first dedicated museum storage facility for the SFO Museum, the only accredited airport museum in the U.S.To optimize natural light and energy eciency, the Webcor/Perkins&Will team evaluated several daylighting strategies, ultimately increasing floor-to-floor height from 13 to 15 feet. This cost-eective solution improved employee well-being, engagement, and views of SFO and the Bay without aecting the schedule. The building features 11-foot exterior glass walls, high ceilings, and ample natural light. The impressive open-air entry lobby boasts a three-story LED digital media canvas and spans 50 feet in height, contributing to the vitality of its surroundings.The lobby, often called the "urban living room," features a 90-foot cantilever with 90 feet of sliding glass panels, providing a seamless transition between the public and private areas. GENENTECH BUILDING 35SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CAGenentech Building 35, designed by Perkins&Will, Inc., used Genentech's highly collaborative project delivery (HCPD) model, which incorporates the critical elements of integrated project delivery (IPD). The building has one structure with seven levels above grade and accommodates 1,300 employees in active workspaces. Open stairways, secure light-filled bicycle storage and locker rooms, a reGen Center for meditation and relaxation, a coee bar, and a marketplace cafeteria are some of the building's other amenities. The project was designed and built with Genentech's core values in mind: well-being, collaboration, flexibility, and environmental sustainability. It's a prime example of biophilic design, with views connecting occupants to the local ecologies.The team partnered with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to test building systems, including lighting, lighting controls, shade fabric, and automated shading controls, in LBNL's FLEXLAB facility. We equipped and constructed a section of Genentech's new building on FLEXLAB's large-scale rotating test bed, including furniture, façade systems, flooring, lighting, and ceiling systems. Berkeley Lab researchers conducted comparison tests on dierent options, rotating the test bed weekly to test solutions for three building orientations.
