Enhanced Leadership Skills:Older students in combined classes havethe opportunity to build strongleadership skills as they help youngerstudents.Increased Self-Esteem:Students in combined classes often feelmore confident and secure in theirabilities, as they learn from and interactwith peers of different ages and skilllevels. Positive Peer Interaction:Combined classes can build a greatersense of community and collaboration,leading to more positive interactionbetween students of different ages.Greater Independence andResponsibility:Students in combined classes have theopportunity to develop a greater senseof independence and responsibility asthey learn to work with and supportpeers of different ages.Improved Social SkillsCombined classes can provideopportunities for students to practicesocial skills like helping, sharing, andtaking turns.Students in all classes benefit from: Differentiated Instruction:Teachers design instruction to meet thediverse needs of the students ofdifferent ages and abilities in allclassrooms. The term “split class” is nolonger used as we view students in a classas a “learning community.” Organizing classes to best meet theneeds of all students is a complexprocess. Factors that influence theformation of combined classes include:shifting enrolment class size compositionschool staffing They are often created when there aretoo many students at one grade level, butnot enough to create two classes.
