Texts Our courses engage some of the most important texts in the development of Western society Great Books However we are not strictly a Great Books program We utilize supplementary texts when they can benefit our students and we embrace a more flexible approach to pedagogy than do Great Books programs We use the Socratic method when it suits the material and the needs of our students We also use a wide array of other pedagogical tools Classical Process We work first through the Trivium Logic Grammar Rhetoric to establish a solid foundation in the principles of learning how to think how to write and how to speak From there we proceed to the natural and physical sciences those parts of the natural world that we can see and touch Finally we proceed to philosophy and theology those subjects that are no less real but which we cannot physically see and touch Content Our curriculum is based on the unchanging teachings of the Church as given to us by Christ Himself and the Apostles and as explicated to us by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church Integrated Courses Topics are examined across courses For example principles studied in a theology course will also appear in the music of a music history course Latin texts studied in a philosophy course or in the Divine Office or Mass will have appeared in the Latin sequence of courses Prayer Prayer is integrated into the daily schedule There are no classes offered during the Office Mass or Rosary Work Time for work in the Ora et Labora Program is also built into the daily schedule Cohesive The philosophical spiritual and moral principles that guide the curriculum do so in all the courses not just the philosophy and theology courses For some examples Science Courses In collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Physics our science courses are all grounded in Catholic philosophical spiritual and moral teaching Math Courses In collaboration with the Sydney School our math courses are all grounded in Aristotelian philosophical thought Music Courses These courses examine how the music of The Church unfolds the truths of the faith in beautiful and profound ways

The Collegium and Tradition Fidelity and Tradition We believe that the Traditional Latin Mass and Office are extraordinarily beautiful expressions of what is good and true in the Catholic faith We also follow the data which reveal that 98 of young Catholic adults between the ages of 18 and 34 and who come from families that attend the Traditional Latin Mass regularly continue to attend Mass regularly Tradition and traditional Catholic piety are a strong force in keeping the faith vibrant in our young adults We embrace tradition to help achieve our primary goal of helping our graduates attain heaven Relationship to the Church Collegium sanctorum angelorum is an independent institution of higher learning We have no legal affiliation or legal relationship with the Roman Catholic Church We do however have a cordial relationship with our archbishop who has extended his personal support even to the extent of assigning an additional priest to St Mary s to help us fill our chaplaincy needs and giving the Mandatum to our theology professor We do also pledge full and unswerving fidelity to the unchanging magisterium of the Catholic Church and we recognize both the authority and the responsibility of the local Ordinary to assure that anything taught in his diocese that relates to the Catholic faith is taught in accord with the magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church Out of respect for this authority and responsibility the Collegium has submitted the syllabus of each of its courses to the local Ordinary so that he can be assured that everything taught at the Collegium is in accord with the magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church Every faculty member also takes the Oath of Fidelity in addition to the Oath Against Modernism which was required of all clergy pastors confessors preachers religious superiors and professors in philosophical theological seminaries until 1967 and is still pronounced by the members of many traditional religious orders Hear our president s thoughts about The Collegium and Tradition The Mandatum is a recognition by the archbishop of our theology professor s pledge to teach in communion with the magisterium of the Church
