54Governor’s ForewordRéamhrá na nGobharnóiríOn behalf of the Board of Governors, staff and schoolcommunity of Cólaiste Feirste I extend a warm welcome to allour prospective pupils and to you their parents and guardians. Thanks for taking the time to read our prospectus. It providesdetails of the courses we offer, details on selection criteria and ataster of what we’re all about. We are now beyond our ‘thirtysomethings’. In our first schoolprospectus the then Governors recalled how “in the past someparents whose children recieved their primary educationthrough Irish had to send their children to Dublin in order toprovide Irish Language secondary education for them. Theopening of our own Irish-language second-level college is anhistoric and exciting opportunity.” The message of the last 30years is how, for each other, each and every one of us can makea difference. More than 3000 learners have received theireducation through Coláiste Feirste and they have gone on toclimb many different career ladders - to become nurses orteachers, journalists or artists, bakers, knitters, potters, tradespeople, policy makers, scientists and code leaders. Today,we - the Coláiste Feirste family must scale new heights and useour skills and our heads and hearts to ensure every year is aboutmaking that difference, for generations to come. ColáisteFeirste provides a tradition in learning and personaldevelopment. These strengths connect to offer a dynamic placein which to study and to grow. Thar ceann Bhord na nGobharnóirí, na foirne agus phobal scoileCholáiste Feirste, cuirim fearadh na fáilte roimh chohórt nabliana seo chugainn agus romhaibhse, a thuismitheoirí agus achaomhnóiríGo raibh maith agat as an réamheolaire seo a léamh. Tá eolasann ar na cúrsaí atá ar fáil anseo agus ar na critéir roghnúcháin,chomh maith le blaiseadh beag de shaol an Choláiste.Anois agus muid níos mó ná tríocha bliain ar an fhód is fiúcuimhneamh ar shliocht as an chéad réamheolaire a d’fhoilsighan scoil: “San am atá thart, b’éigean do roinnt tuismitheoirí abpáistí a chur go Baile Átha Cliath le meánscolaíocht Ghaeilge afháil. Tugann ár meánscoil nua Ghaelach deis stairiúil agusspeisialta dúinn”. Léirigh an tréimhse de thríocha bliain inadhiaidh sin an difear a rinne gach duine againn i bpobal anCholáiste sa scoil agus taobh amuigh di. Inniu,ní mór do chlann Choláiste Feirste dul ó neart go neart le godtig linn an difear sin a dhéanamh arís, bliain i ndiaidh bliana dona glúnta atá le teacht. Cothaíonn Coláiste Feirste cultúr aligeann dá pobal foghlaim agus forbairt go pearsanta. Oibrímidle chéile le hionad dinimiciúil a chur ar fáil don staidéar agusdon fhás. The school’s development over recent years has beenstaggering and is driven by talented people working at theheart of everything we do. We will continue to take action to ensure the quality ofeducational provision is further enhanced. Across all ourwork, the same goal drives what we do: to bring pupils, parents and teachers together in delivering exceptionaleducational experiences and outcomes. The struggle against inequality continues on many frontsand we are thankful for the city wide support we receive. Inreturn we recognise that the fruits of that activism must beshared fairly not least in how services for young Irishspeakers are distributed and supported across the City andbeyond. Maximising returns on the recent capital investment is onlymade possible by more capital investment. ThroughSpórtlann we can now complete and share our story, but firstwe have to bring the work to its full fruition. We cannotafford to stand and wait: now is the time to finish theproject. The next phase of Spórtlann - which Belfast CityCouncil has already committed partly to fund is within our grasp. 98Ceannaireacht don tsíorfheabhsúÓ bunaíodh i 1991 é, d’fhás agus d’fhorbair Coláiste Feirste ascuimse. Tháinig méadú suntasach ar líon na ndaltaí, líon nafoirne, ar an tsoláthar curaclaim, ar acmhainní agus áiseanna. Salá atá inniu ann, tá an scoil suite i gcroílár na Ceathrún Gaeltachtai mBéal Feirste, go fisiciúil agus go meonach. Tá foireann mhórardcháilithe de 73 mhúinteoirí ann agus 983 dalta ag teacht ó 11bhunscoil i mórcheantar Bhéal Feirste. Le 5 bliana anuas tá an-rath ar Choláiste Feirste, de réir tagarmharcála torthaí scrúduitheleis na scoileanna Béarla sa tuaisceart.Leantar den tsíorfhorbairt seo i rith an ama. Fuair muidinfheistíocht chun áiseanna teagaisc agus spóirt den chéad scotha thógáil. Cuireann na háiseanna seo leis na deiseannaoideachasúla is féidir linn a thairiscint do dhéagóirí naGaelscolaíochta. Cheadaigh an Roinn Oideachais moladhforbartha don scoil i mí na Nollag 2020 chun cur leis an líoniontrála scoile agus tugadh cóiríocht bhreise dúinn mar gheall airseo. Chuir muid soláthar ar leith ar bun do dhaltaí Bhliain 8 imbliana chun an t-aistriú scoile a éascú. De bharr an fháisthapaidh i líon na ndaltaí áfach, ní leor na háiseanna iontacha seole freastal ar riachtanais na ndaltaí. Leanann muid linn agéileamh tuilleadh áiseanna don fhadtréimhse. Tá muid anois agcuartú áit i dtuaisceart Bhéal Feirste chun soláthar iar-bhunscolaíochta eile a chur ar bun.Is iomaí dúshlán agus roinnt fadhbanna ar an aistear seo.Sháraigh muid iad mar gheall ar ár gcreidbheáil phaiseanta imbuntáistí an Ghaeloideachais agus mar gheall ar chaighdeán naceannasaíochta i bpobal na scoile – ó thuismitheoirí agus daltaí, ómhúinteoirí agus gobharnóirí scoile. Chuir Coláiste Feirsteinfheistíocht mhór isteach go háirithe i gceannaireacht sinsearachscoile a ghlacann cur chuige nuálach leis an oideachas, afhorbraíonn oideolaíocht lánGhaeilge agus a thugann faoithosaíochtaí straitéiseacha soiléire a chuirfidh feabhsú areispéaras agus ar thorthaí oideachasúla na ndaltaí – próiseassíorfheabhsaithe, ó théarma go téarma, ó bhliain go bliain.Cinnteoidh an cumas ceannaireachta seo go leanfaidh ColáisteFeirste den tsíordhul chun cinn go ceann na mblianta seochugainn le freastal go héifeachtach ar riachtanais agusuaillmhianta éagsúla ár ndaoine óga. Leadership for ContinuousImprovement Since its establishment in 1991 Coláiste Feirste has expandedand developed at an amazing rate. Its pupil numbers, teaching staff, curriculum offer, resources and facilities haveall grown and blossomed. Today the school is situated at theheart of Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter both physically andconceptually. There is a large complement of 73 highlyqualified and enthusiastic teachers and 983 pupils drawnfrom the 11 bunscoil in the greater Belfast area. For the past5 years Coláiste Feirste, when its exam results arebenchmarked against the English-medium sector, has beenvery successful. This constant development continues. Having acquiredcapital investment from the Department of Education, wenow have excellent teaching and sports’ facilities. This hasextended further the range of opportunities Coláiste Feirsteoffers to Gaelscoil children. In 2020 DE approved a furtherdevelopment proposal to increase school enrolment numbersand expand facilities further. We have received some extraaccommodation facilities this year which we have used tocreate a bespoke Year 8 provision. However, as demand forpupil places continues to grow rapidly, these excellentfacilities do not accommodate pupils’ requirementsadequately. Therefore we continue to fight for furtherfacilities to meet our pupils’ requirements in the longer-term.We are also seeking a site in north Belfast to develop aprovision of Coláiste Feirste there. There have been many challenges and a few set-backs alongthe way. These have been overcome by the passionate beliefin the benefits of Irish-medium education and by the qualityof leadership within the school community – from parentsand pupils to teachers and school governors. In particular,Coláiste Feirste has invested heavily in senior leadershipcapacity in the school which takes an innovate approach toeducation, develops Irish-medium pedagogy and focuses onclear strategic priorities which will improve the educationalexperience and outcomes for pupils – a process of constantimprovement, term by term, year by year. This leadership capacity will ensure that Coláiste Feirstecontinues to move forward in the coming years to meetvaried needs and aspirations of our young people. A dynamic & expanding ethosColáiste Feirste aims to provide post primary education of thehighest quality through the medium of the Irish language andis committed to excellence in every aspect of this work. Theschool has many years of experience in this field and offersan educational experience which develops the social, intellectual and technical skills of the young people in ourcare. Their education in Coláiste Feirste enables pupils tobecome fulfilled and caring adults and it encourages them tosee their language and culture as a valuable and livingheritage from which they can derive pleasure andsatisfaction, while at the same time making them aware, tolerant and appreciative of other traditions, views andlifestyles. Coláiste Feirste is a co-educational, all-ability, comprehensiveschool and as such it embraces tolerance and welcomesdiversity. The school seeks to cultivate confidence and self-assertiveness in its pupils allowing them to express fully theirown identity and culture. Our staff seeks to foster youngpeople who will in the future play active, constructive, progressive roles in our community and in society as a whole. We hope to instil in them the values necessary to beresponsible parents, workers, leaders and contributingmembers of society in the future.Exemplary conduct is encouraged and expected of the pupilsboth inside and outside of the school. They are expected tohave respect for themselves and for others. They areexpected to wear their school uniform with pride. Our school endeavours to provide an educational servicewhich enables pupils to obtain qualifications, knowledge, experiences and necessary life skills. We believe that everypupil has the ability to reach his/her full potential with regardto social, personal and educational development. We believethat the pupil, parents, teachers and school management arecollectively responsible for this aim and must work togetherto achieve it. We expect that parents will support and assist the teachers inupholding the aims and ethos of the school.Sainmheon CumhachtachBríomhar Is í príomhaidhm Choláiste Feirste an réimse is leithne iar-bhunoideachais trí mheán na Gaeilge a sholáthar agus barrfeabhais a bhaint amach i ngach gné den obair sin. 1514Gaeilge in practiceColáiste Feirste seeks to help pupils understand andcelebrate their own distinct identity and culture and theGaelic ethos of the school is central to this aim. As it is anIrish Medium school, the Irish language is the mostimportant tool for the pupils’ education and they areconstantly encouraged to make Irish their first languageand use it throughout the school day in order to enhancetheir own educational potential and facilitate the learningprocess of their peers. We create an environment andorganise a range of events to encourage the pupils tospeak Irish throughout the school. Our expectation is that parents support us in nurturingand consolidating the Gaelic ethos among pupils topersuade them of the importance of the language inschool life.TréadchúramAimsigh an sonas, a deir muid agus na daltaí linn ar CholáisteFeirste, scoil ina spreagtar na daltaí bheith cineálta dóibh féinagus do dhaoine eile.
